LLM Authority Index Research | ChatGPT | Insurance | July-September 2026
Reddit's direct citation visibility fell sharply in ChatGPT for high-stakes insurance questions during the July-September 2026 research window.
Across the full three-month ChatGPT insurance source slice, Reddit ranked #3 in July, #4 in August and #8 in September by response citation coverage. Full-panel coverage fell from 26.39% in July to 12.61% in August and 6.86% in September. Reddit event share fell from 7.43% to 3.57% to 2.18%.
The stricter parent-study endpoint shows the same break. On the locked nine-vertical July-to-September insurance panel, Reddit's citation-event share fell from 7.48% to 2.31%, a 69.1% relative decline, while response citation coverage fell from 26.52% to 6.94%, a 73.8% decline.
The matched-prompt test points in the same direction. In the locked Article 28 ChatGPT subset, 94 prompt-plus-surface scenarios could be paired between July and September. Reddit disappeared in 22 and newly appeared in only 4, a 5.5-to-1 loss-to-gain ratio. Matched response coverage fell from 25.53% to 6.38%.
Answer Capsule
Reddit citation visibility declined sharply in ChatGPT for high-stakes insurance questions from July to September 2026. In the locked balanced endpoint published in Article 28, Reddit's citation-event share fell 69.1%, from 7.48% to 2.31%, while response citation coverage fell 73.8%, from 26.52% to 6.94%. The strict matched ChatGPT panel contained 94 scenarios: Reddit remained cited in 2, disappeared in 22, newly appeared in 4, and was absent in 66. Matched coverage fell from 25.53% to 6.38%, a 75.0% relative decline. The exact two-sided McNemar p-value is approximately 0.00053.

Questions This Study Answers
- How much did Reddit citation visibility fall in ChatGPT for high-stakes insurance decisions from July to September 2026?
- Does the decline remain when the same prompt and ChatGPT surface are paired?
- Was the decline broad across insurance verticals, or concentrated in a few topics?
Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions
Article 48 isolates one source, Reddit, inside one platform, ChatGPT, and one commercial decision family, Insurance. That narrow design makes the study useful for day-to-day AI search marketing because it separates three different questions that are often collapsed into one visibility score:
- Where does Reddit rank inside the ChatGPT insurance source market?
- How often is Reddit actually cited, measured both as citation-event share and response citation coverage?
- Is Reddit-specific decline occurring inside a stable source market or inside a source market that is itself rotating quickly?
The three-month ChatGPT insurance source study provides the aggregate context. Reddit still ranked #3 overall at 15.2% response citation coverage across July through September. That aggregate position can coexist with a severe current-month decline: Reddit ranked #3 in July, #4 in August and #8 in September, while full-panel response coverage fell from 26.39% to 12.61% to 6.86% and citation-event share fell from 7.43% to 3.57% to 2.18%.
The locked balanced endpoint shows an even clearer break. Reddit citation-event share fell 69.1%, from 7.48% to 2.31%, while response citation coverage fell 73.8%, from 26.52% to 6.94%. In the locked matched set, 22 scenarios lost Reddit while only 4 gained it, a 5.5-to-1 loss-to-gain ratio, and matched coverage fell from 25.53% to 6.38%, a 75.0% decline.
For publishers, this means a strong three-month aggregate position should not be presented as proof of current stability. For brands and CMOs, it means ChatGPT source strategy should be monitored with a fixed prompt panel and separate measures for rank, response coverage, citation-event share, and matched losses and gains.
Article 48 also needs to be interpreted inside an unusually dynamic ChatGPT insurance source market. The ChatGPT Insurance source study reports that the Top 100 account for 73.5% of domain-response appearances, yet only 38 domains remained in the Top 100 in July, August and September and the median monthly Top 100 Jaccard similarity was only 31.6%. In other words, the market is concentrated at the top but rotates heavily over time.
That matters because Reddit's decline should not be confused with all source turnover. Reddit-specific evidence is stronger than simple list churn: the same-prompt matched panel produced 22 losses versus 4 gains, and the locked balanced endpoint lost more than two thirds of Reddit's event share. At the same time, the low 31.6% monthly Top 100 persistence shows that ChatGPT Insurance sourcing was changing broadly around Reddit as well.
The vertical audit reinforces the need for commercial segmentation. Seven of nine comparable insurance verticals lost Reddit citation-event share and six of nine lost response coverage. Travel Insurance fell 96.6% in event share, Pet Insurance 80.8%, and Health Insurance 76.3%, while Disability Insurance and Life Insurance Companies moved against the aggregate event-share trend. Category averages therefore belong in planning, but budgets and publisher outreach should still be evaluated at the insurance-product and prompt-cluster level.
The platform comparison is equally important. The locked parent insurance study reports Reddit citation-event share changes of -69.1% in ChatGPT, -33.1% in Google AI Overviews, -33.1% in Google AI Mode, -56.1% in Gemini, -100.0% in Perplexity, and no measurable Reddit event share in Microsoft Copilot at either endpoint. One blended 'Reddit visibility in AI' KPI would hide those differences.
The broader Insurance Citation Authority Study reports 80.2% median monthly Top 100 persistence, 29.0% median cross-platform Top 100 portability, and an approximate 51.2 percentage-point Persistence-Portability Gap. The Persistence-Portability Gap framework helps interpret Article 48 correctly: source authority can be relatively durable at the decision-family level while fragmenting across platforms, and an individual source can still experience a sharp platform-specific decline. Article 48 should not manufacture a separate gap by subtracting ChatGPT Insurance's 31.6% monthly persistence from a single pairwise platform overlap because those measurements use different comparison structures.
Citation visibility should remain separate from brand mentions, recommendation rate, rank, sentiment, citation-recommendation coupling, and downstream business outcomes. This study measures the visible source layer. It does not establish that a Reddit citation caused an insurer, broker, publisher, or product recommendation.
Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings
| Research finding | What publishers can responsibly do or say | What brands and CMOs can reasonably do |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit ranked #3 across the three-month ChatGPT Insurance source study, but monthly rank moved #3 to #4 to #8 and September coverage fell to 6.86% | "Reddit remained a major aggregate source, but its current-month ChatGPT reach weakened sharply." | Report aggregate authority and current-month visibility separately. |
| Balanced Reddit event share fell 69.1% and response coverage fell 73.8% | "Reddit direct citation visibility weakened sharply on a like-for-like ChatGPT Insurance panel." | Maintain a fixed ChatGPT insurance prompt panel and monitor both metrics monthly. |
| The locked matched set produced 22 losses versus 4 gains | "The decline remains when prompt and ChatGPT surface are held constant." | Add matched loss/gain reporting instead of relying only on rank or share-of-voice snapshots. |
| Exact McNemar p is about 0.00053 | "The matched loss/gain imbalance is strongly detectable in this sample." | Treat the result as evidence of directional change, not proof of cause. |
| Only 38 domains stayed in the ChatGPT Insurance Top 100 across all three months and median monthly similarity was 31.6% | "The surrounding ChatGPT Insurance source market also rotated substantially." | Refresh source-priority lists frequently enough to detect market-wide source churn separately from Reddit-specific movement. |
| Seven of nine comparable verticals lost Reddit event share, while Disability and Life Insurance moved differently | "The decline was broad but not universal across insurance products." | Allocate research, PR, content and publisher outreach by insurance product and commercial prompt cluster. |
| Reddit-loss scenarios redistributed across OpenAI.com, Money.com, Forbes, Squaremouth, NerdWallet and other domains | "No single publisher inherited Reddit's lost visibility." | Build a diversified source portfolio rather than substituting one target for Reddit. |
| ChatGPT declined much faster than the two Google surfaces | "Reddit citation behavior is platform-specific." | Maintain separate source strategies and dashboards for ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. |
| The broader Insurance market shows 80.2% persistence but only 29.0% portability | "Decision-family authority can persist while platform source sets fragment." | Separate source-specific drift, platform-category churn, decision-family persistence and cross-platform portability. |
| Citation visibility is not recommendation causality | "This study measures the source layer, not endorsement." | Track citations, mentions, recommendations, rank, sentiment and conversion outcomes as separate variables. |

Where Article 48 Fits in the High-Stakes Consumer Decisions Corpus
Article 48 is a child analysis of two parent studies:
- the Insurance Reddit decline study, which provides the locked cross-platform insurance endpoint and matched counts; and
- the ChatGPT Insurance source study, which provides the surrounding three-month ChatGPT source market, including Reddit's #3 aggregate rank and 15.2% response coverage, 38 domains present in all three monthly Top 100s, and 31.6% median monthly Top 100 persistence.
The platform-level context comes from the overall ChatGPT Top 100 study. The broader interpretation comes from the 2026 AI Citation Authority Study, the overall Reddit decline study, the cross-platform citation-overlap study, the citation-drift study, and the Persistence-Portability Gap framework. Those studies answer different questions and should not be collapsed into one visibility score.
What We Studied
This article is the ChatGPT platform-specific extension of the broader Reddit decline study for high-stakes insurance consumer decisions.
The underlying ChatGPT insurance source study contains:
| Measure | Count |
|---|---|
| Raw ChatGPT insurance observations | 1,329 |
| Explicit extraction failures | 0 |
| Deduplicated ChatGPT insurance responses | 1,272 |
| Visible citation events after public filtering | 6,056 |
| Registrable cited domains | 670 |
| Domain-response appearances | 5,370 |
| Public infrastructure citation entries excluded | 6 |
| Insurance source verticals | 12 |
| Months | 3 |
The 12 source vertical labels are:
- Car Insurance
- Dental insurance
- Disability Insurance
- Health Insurance
- Life Insurance Companies
- Long-Term Care Insurance
- Medicare Supplement Insurance
- Pet Insurance
- Renters Insurance
- Short Term Health Insurance
- Travel Insurance
- Vision Insurance
The strict July-to-September endpoint uses nine verticals. Long-Term Care Insurance, Renters Insurance and Vision Insurance are omitted because July source datasets were not present in the frozen archive.

The Core Finding: Reddit Lost About 70% of Its Locked ChatGPT Insurance Citation Visibility
Questions This Section Answers
- Could the three September-only insurance verticals explain the decline?
- Did Reddit lose both event share and response coverage?
- How large was the decline after the category set was held constant?
The locked Article 28 endpoint controls the category universe by comparing only the nine insurance source verticals represented in both July and September.
| Metric | July 2026 | September 2026 | Relative change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reddit share of citation events | 7.48% | 2.31% | -69.1% |
| Reddit response citation coverage | 26.52% | 6.94% | -73.8% |
Both measures moved sharply lower. Reddit represented a much smaller share of visible citation events and appeared in a much smaller percentage of eligible ChatGPT insurance responses.
The endpoint percentages are preserved from Article 28 so this child study remains numerically consistent with the published parent insurance trend analysis. The direct record-level reconstruction produces essentially the same endpoint direction and magnitude.
Commercially, the change is large. In July, roughly one in four eligible ChatGPT insurance responses cited Reddit. By September, the balanced endpoint was closer to one in fourteen.
Reddit Fell Month by Month in the Full ChatGPT Insurance Panel
Questions This Section Answers
- Was September an isolated break or part of a three-month decline?
- How quickly did Reddit lose rank inside ChatGPT insurance citations?
- Does the descriptive full panel tell the same directional story as the locked endpoint?
The response-level full panel shows a continuous decline:
| Month | ChatGPT insurance responses | Reddit citation events | Reddit event share | Responses citing Reddit | Reddit response coverage | Reddit rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| July 2026 | 413 | 174 | 7.43% | 109 | 26.39% | #3 |
| August 2026 | 436 | 77 | 3.57% | 55 | 12.61% | #4 |
| September 2026 | 423 | 34 | 2.18% | 29 | 6.86% | #8 |
Reddit's response coverage was cut by more than half between July and August, then fell by roughly half again between August and September.
The rank movement is also notable. Reddit moved from the #3 cited domain in July to #4 in August and #8 in September. The decline therefore affected both absolute coverage and Reddit's position relative to competing sources.
The full September panel includes three insurance verticals without July data, so the locked nine-vertical endpoint remains the preferred July-to-September comparison.

The Strict Matched-Prompt Test Shows More Than Five Losses for Every Gain
Questions This Section Answers
- Did Reddit decline when prompt wording and raw ChatGPT surface were held constant?
- How many matched scenarios lost Reddit compared with gains?
- Was the directional imbalance statistically meaningful inside this sample?
The locked Article 28 ChatGPT matched panel contains 94 scenarios:
| July Reddit citation | September Reddit citation | Matched scenarios |
|---|---|---|
| Yes | Yes | 2 |
| Yes | No | 22 |
| No | Yes | 4 |
| No | No | 66 |
| Total | 94 |
Reddit losses outnumbered gains 22 to 4, a 5.5-to-1 imbalance.
Matched Reddit response coverage fell from 25.53% to 6.38%, a 75.0% relative decline.
The exact two-sided McNemar test gives p ≈ 0.00053. Within this matched sample, the loss-gain imbalance is inconsistent with a simple 50/50 turnover process. The test does not identify the cause of the change.
The ChatGPT Vertical Audit Shows Broad but Uneven Decline
Questions This Section Answers
- Did every insurance vertical decline inside ChatGPT?
- Which insurance topics had the largest Reddit losses?
- Which topics moved against the category-wide trend?
The ChatGPT-specific vertical audit shows a broad decline, but not a perfectly uniform one.
| Insurance vertical | July event share | September event share | Event-share change | July response coverage | September response coverage | Coverage change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Car Insurance | 3.06% | 2.48% | -19.0% | 16.67% | 5.88% | -64.7% |
| Dental insurance | 5.15% | 2.96% | -42.4% | 21.92% | 8.24% | -62.4% |
| Disability Insurance | 4.26% | 6.58% | +54.6% | 17.86% | 20.00% | +12.0% |
| Health Insurance | 2.89% | 0.68% | -76.3% | 9.88% | 2.33% | -76.5% |
| Life Insurance Companies | 2.50% | 2.78% | +11.1% | 10.00% | 10.00% | +0.0% |
| Medicare Supplement Insurance | 4.02% | 3.01% | -25.2% | 16.95% | 10.53% | -37.9% |
| Pet Insurance | 13.13% | 2.52% | -80.8% | 51.90% | 9.76% | -81.2% |
| Short Term Health Insurance | 9.80% | 4.17% | -57.5% | 25.00% | 12.50% | -50.0% |
| Travel Insurance | 10.51% | 0.35% | -96.6% | 30.68% | 1.15% | -96.3% |
Seven of nine comparable verticals had lower Reddit event share in September. Six of nine had lower response coverage, while Life Insurance Companies was flat on response coverage and Disability Insurance moved higher.
The median vertical-level event-share change was -42.4%, and the median response-coverage change was -62.4%.
The steepest measured event-share declines were:
- Travel Insurance: 10.51% to 0.35%, down 96.6%.
- Pet Insurance: 13.13% to 2.52%, down 80.8%.
- Health Insurance: 2.89% to 0.68%, down 76.3%.
- Short Term Health Insurance: 9.80% to 4.17%, down 57.5%.
- Dental insurance: 5.15% to 2.96%, down 42.4%.
Two verticals moved against the aggregate event-share trend:
- Disability Insurance rose from 4.26% to 6.58% event share and from 17.86% to 20.00% response coverage.
- Life Insurance Companies rose from 2.50% to 2.78% event share while response coverage remained 10.00% at both endpoints.
Those exceptions should be interpreted cautiously because both endpoint samples are small. Disability Insurance had 28 July responses and 20 September responses. Life Insurance Companies had only 10 responses in each endpoint month.
The platform-specific conclusion is therefore not that every insurance topic declined. It is that the aggregate ChatGPT insurance trend moved sharply lower, with the largest commercial verticals showing substantial losses and a few small panels moving differently.

What Appeared When Reddit Disappeared?
Questions This Section Answers
- Did one publisher consistently replace Reddit?
- Which domains appeared most often in Reddit-loss scenarios?
- Does the evidence support a single replacement-source strategy?
No single external publisher replaced Reddit across the 22 matched scenarios where Reddit appeared in July but not September.
| Newly appearing September domain | Reddit-loss scenarios | Share of Reddit-loss scenarios |
|---|---|---|
| openai.com | 4 | 18.2% |
| money.com | 3 | 13.6% |
| seaworthy.io | 3 | 13.6% |
| forbes.com | 3 | 13.6% |
| squaremouth.com | 3 | 13.6% |
| nerdwallet.com | 3 | 13.6% |
| legalclarity.org | 2 | 9.1% |
| naic.org | 2 | 9.1% |
| kiplinger.com | 2 | 9.1% |
| bestmoney.com | 2 | 9.1% |
| benehub.com | 1 | 4.5% |
| emedicare.com | 1 | 4.5% |
OpenAI.com was the most common newly appearing domain, present in four of the 22 Reddit-loss scenarios. Among external sources, Money.com, Seaworthy, Forbes, Squaremouth and NerdWallet each appeared in three scenarios.
That pattern does not support a one-for-one replacement story. The new sources span first-party OpenAI pages, broad financial publishers, insurance specialists, travel-insurance sources, consumer publishers and regulatory or informational sites.
For brands, the practical implication is to avoid asking, "What replaced Reddit?" as if one new source took its place. The better question is which source portfolios are gaining visibility inside the specific ChatGPT prompt clusters that matter commercially.
Platform Differences: ChatGPT Declined Much More Sharply Than Google
Questions This Section Answers
- Was the Reddit decline equally severe across AI platforms?
- How did ChatGPT compare with Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode?
- Why does platform-specific reporting matter?
The parent insurance study shows substantial platform divergence:
| AI platform | July Reddit event share | September Reddit event share | Relative change | July response coverage | September response coverage | Coverage change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 7.48% | 2.31% | -69.1% | 26.52% | 6.94% | -73.8% |
| Google AI Overviews | 3.36% | 2.25% | -33.1% | 12.71% | 9.04% | -28.9% |
| Google AI Mode | 3.18% | 2.13% | -33.1% | 15.47% | 12.43% | -19.6% |
| Gemini | 3.15% | 1.39% | -56.1% | 4.38% | 1.75% | -60.1% |
| Perplexity | 2.14% | 0.00% | -100.0% | 4.12% | 0.00% | -100.0% |
| Microsoft Copilot | 0.00% | 0.00% | n/a | 0.00% | 0.00% | n/a |
ChatGPT's Reddit decline was more than twice as large as the event-share decline on either Google AI surface, and the response-coverage decline was much steeper.
The matched results tell the same story. ChatGPT produced 22 losses vs. 4 gains, compared with 49 vs. 25 in Google AI Overviews and 38 vs. 21 in Google AI Mode.
A single blended "Reddit visibility" KPI would obscure those differences. Insurance brands and publishers should treat platform as a first-class reporting dimension.

What This Means for Insurance Brands and CMOs
Questions This Section Answers
- Should insurance brands stop investing in Reddit?
- What should replace a single-source authority strategy?
- Which metrics should CMOs track next?
1. Do not treat Reddit as a fixed ChatGPT citation channel
Reddit remained a meaningful source across the quarter, but its direct citation coverage fell sharply. An AI-search strategy should assume that source selection can change materially by platform and month.
2. Track ChatGPT separately from Google
The decline was far steeper in ChatGPT than in Google AI Overviews or Google AI Mode. Blended AI visibility can hide that difference.
3. Build a portfolio of third-party authority
The Reddit-loss scenarios redistributed across broad publishers, insurance specialists, travel-insurance sources, regulators and first-party OpenAI pages. That argues for diversified authority building rather than substituting one target for Reddit.
4. Separate citation visibility from recommendation visibility
A citation does not prove that the cited page caused a company recommendation. Likewise, losing a visible Reddit citation does not prove that Reddit stopped influencing retrieval, reputation or brand perception.
5. Manage at the vertical and prompt-cluster level
Travel, Pet, Health and Short Term Health Insurance lost Reddit visibility much more sharply than Disability Insurance or Life Insurance Companies. Category averages are useful for strategy, but investment should be managed against the specific commercial questions the business cares about.
What This Means for Insurance Publishers
A sharp reduction in one major community source can create openings for publishers, but the data does not support a simple transfer of citations from Reddit to one replacement domain.
Publishers should focus on three measurable opportunities:
- Own more high-intent insurance questions with specific, answerable pages. Broad brand authority alone did not determine the replacement pattern.
- Track platform-specific gains. A source that gains in ChatGPT may not gain in Google AI Mode or Google AI Overviews.
- Demonstrate durable citation coverage. Multi-month and multi-vertical persistence is commercially more defensible than one isolated citation spike.
The strongest commercial claim is not "ChatGPT trusts us." It is that a publisher is repeatedly visible in a defined prompt set, category and platform under a transparent methodology.

How This Study Relates to Prior Reddit and Insurance AI Research
Independent research is directionally consistent with a sharp Reddit decline in ChatGPT during the same quarter, but the exact percentages are not directly comparable.
PromptWatch measured Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations averaging 3.83% from July 18 through August 7, 2026, then falling to 0.52% from August 14 through August 17, an 86.4% relative decline. It also measured ChatGPT's use of domain-scoped site: fan-out queries jumping from 0.37% to 16.8% on August 8. Article 48 shows a similarly sharp directional break in a different population: full-panel ChatGPT Insurance response coverage moved 26.39% to 12.61% to 6.86% from July through September, while the locked balanced endpoint declined 73.8%.
Search Engine Journal reviewed the PromptWatch timing and cautioned that the August 8 search-behavior change does not fully explain the sharper August 14 Reddit collapse. PromptWatch itself described the size of the drop as provisional and could not rule out a collection issue. Article 48 therefore treats the timing as contextual evidence, not proof that a specific retrieval, ranking, licensing or product change caused the insurance decline.
Ahrefs' September 2026 broad U.S. ChatGPT leaderboard still ranked Reddit #1 at 16.8% mention share. That broad all-topic prominence can coexist with Reddit ranking #3 at 15.2% response coverage across this three-month Insurance source study and only #8 at 6.86% coverage in September. Ahrefs uses a broad U.S. query universe and a mention-share denominator, while Article 48 uses high-stakes Insurance prompts and reports response citation coverage plus citation-event share.
Conductor's 2026 Insurance AI Search benchmark provides a separate industry-level comparison. In its January through May 2026 seven-engine analysis, ChatGPT accounted for 11.9% of measured Insurance citations and averaged 4.7 citations per answer. Conductor analyzed more than 3.6 million Insurance brand citations across more than 178,000 prompts, but assigns citations to Insurance based on the industry of the cited domain rather than the topic of the question. Its percentages therefore should not be merged with Article 48. The useful agreement is structural: Insurance citation behavior changes materially by engine, and citations and brand mentions are different measurements.
Taken together, the outside research strengthens the case for measurement discipline, not a universal Reddit narrative. The defensible comparison is direction, platform specificity, population and methodology, not decimal-point equivalence across unrelated panels.

How This Study Is Different
This study narrows the broader Reddit research to one platform, one commercial family and a fixed three-month window.
It combines:
- a 1,272-response ChatGPT insurance source slice;
- a locked balanced nine-vertical July-to-September endpoint;
- a 94-scenario locked matched prompt-plus-surface test;
- both citation-event share and response citation coverage;
- a fresh ChatGPT-specific vertical audit from the frozen corpus; and
- a matched Reddit-loss replacement-source audit.
The question is narrow and commercial: how stable was Reddit as a directly cited ChatGPT source for consequential insurance consumer decisions during this quarter?
Why AI Citation Studies Can Disagree
Two well-executed studies can report different Reddit trends without either one necessarily being wrong.
Query population
Insurance comparison and coverage questions are not representative of the entire web. Reddit's role can differ in software, entertainment, troubleshooting, travel, local services or general informational queries.
Platform surface
ChatGPT can behave differently from Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity or Microsoft Copilot.
Denominator
Citation-event share and response citation coverage measure different things. A source can lose event share without losing the same proportion of response coverage, or vice versa.
Time window
A short August disruption and a three-month endpoint comparison answer different questions.
Prompt weighting
This study does not weight prompts by search volume, revenue, media spend or conversion probability.
Matching contract
The locked parent matched panel contains 94 ChatGPT scenarios. A fresh reconstruction from the frozen corpus reproduces that count and the 22-to-4 loss-gain split under the same prompt-plus-surface matching contract.
Domain and infrastructure handling
Domains are consolidated at the registrable-domain level, and obvious technical or navigation endpoints are excluded from publisher-level analysis.
The useful conclusion is not that one universal Reddit citation percentage exists. Citation visibility is conditional on platform, category, prompt set, time period, denominator and collection method.

Verticals Covered
The full ChatGPT insurance source study covers 12 source vertical labels. The balanced endpoint uses these nine:
- Car Insurance
- Dental insurance
- Disability Insurance
- Health Insurance
- Life Insurance Companies
- Medicare Supplement Insurance
- Pet Insurance
- Short Term Health Insurance
- Travel Insurance
The three verticals without July source datasets are Long-Term Care Insurance, Renters Insurance and Vision Insurance.
Methodology
Source archive
This study uses the frozen July-September 2026 LLM Authority Index archive underlying the 2026 AI Citation Authority Study, the ChatGPT insurance citation-source study and the parent insurance Reddit decline study.
Eligibility
A record is eligible for the platform-category source universe when it is:
- in July, August or September 2026;
- assigned to the ChatGPT public platform family;
- associated with the Insurance family; and
- not explicitly marked as an extraction failure.
Exact-repeat anti-double-counting
An observation is treated as an exact analytical repeat when all of the following match:
- report month;
- exact raw platform/source surface;
- normalized prompt text; and
- exact set of original citation URLs.
One analytical instance is retained while source-dataset memberships are preserved for vertical analysis.
Prompt normalization
Prompt text is normalized with Unicode NFKC normalization, case folding, whitespace collapse and trimming.
Reddit identification
Citation URLs are consolidated to registrable domains using Public Suffix List logic. Reddit is identified as reddit.com.
Citation-event share
Reddit citation-event share = Reddit citation events / all eligible citation events
A response can contribute more than one Reddit event if multiple eligible Reddit URLs appear.
Response citation coverage
Reddit response citation coverage = responses citing Reddit / all eligible responses
Reddit counts no more than once per response for this metric.
Balanced endpoint panel
The like-for-like endpoint uses the nine source verticals represented in both July and September. Long-Term Care Insurance, Renters Insurance and Vision Insurance are excluded because July datasets were not present.
Locked matched prompt-plus-surface test
The matched set is inherited from Article 28 to preserve cross-article numerical consistency. It contains 94 scenarios, with 2 both, 22 losses, 4 gains and 66 neither.
Vertical audit
The vertical table in this child study is recalculated directly from the frozen corpus at the source-vertical level using exact-repeat handling inside each named vertical. It is reported separately from the locked parent endpoint and matched panel rather than being used to redefine those parent denominators.
Public infrastructure exclusions
The published ChatGPT insurance source study excluded six obvious technical or infrastructure citation entries from the public source ranking. The child study follows the same principle: technical wrappers are not treated as publishers.
No causal interpretation
Observed citation changes do not establish why ChatGPT changed a source set. They also do not prove that a citation caused a brand mention, recommendation, ranking, conversion or consumer decision.

Limitations
- The study covers a defined commercial insurance prompt panel, not all ChatGPT queries.
- The three-month window can identify direction but cannot establish a permanent source-policy change.
- ChatGPT retrieval, search, model and interface behavior can change during the study period.
- Source visibility is not source quality, trust or endorsement.
- The balanced endpoint excludes three insurance verticals that had no July dataset in the frozen archive.
- The locked endpoint and matched panel are inherited from Article 28 for cross-article numerical consistency; the separate vertical audit is a fresh corpus-level breakdown.
- Several verticals have small endpoint counts and can produce unstable percentage changes.
- The paired test controls prompt wording and raw surface but cannot control undocumented upstream product changes.
- Statistical significance does not identify the cause of the citation change or guarantee that the same direction will continue.
