LLM Authority Index Research | High-Stakes Consumer Decisions | July-September 2026
Reddit remained one of the most visible citation sources in the broader LLM Authority Index study, but its three-month aggregate rank hides a substantial change underneath.
Across a balanced panel of 46 high-stakes consumer verticals measured in both July and September 2026, Reddit's share of visible citation events fell from 3.81% to 2.16%, a 43.3% relative decline. The percentage of AI responses containing at least one Reddit citation fell from 12.41% to 7.15%, a 42.4% decline.
The decline was not driven by a handful of categories. Among the 43 balanced-panel verticals with measurable Reddit citation share in July, all 43 had a lower Reddit citation-event share in September.
A stricter matched analysis produced the same direction. Across 6,601 exact prompt-plus-platform scenarios observed in both July and September, 596 stopped citing Reddit while 190 began citing it. That is 3.14 Reddit citation losses for every gain.
The decline was also highly platform-specific. Reddit's citation-event share fell 75.9% in ChatGPT and 84.0% in Perplexity between July and September in this dataset, compared with declines of 26.6% in Google AI Overviews and 32.3% in Google AI Mode.
These findings independently support the broader 2026 evidence that Reddit citation visibility has been changing, but they do not support a simple conclusion that "AI stopped citing Reddit." Reddit remained a meaningful source in September, particularly on Google's AI surfaces, and other large studies using broad all-topic query sets still rank Reddit among the most frequently cited domains.
Important: This study measures visible citations in a defined high-stakes commercial query panel. It does not measure hidden model training data, and it does not establish that a Reddit citation causes a brand to be mentioned or recommended.
Answer Capsule
Did Reddit lose AI citation visibility from July to September 2026? Yes, in the LLM Authority Index high-stakes consumer-decision panel. On the same 46 verticals measured in both months, Reddit's share of citation events fell 43.3%, from 3.81% in July to 2.16% in September. Response-level Reddit citation coverage fell 42.4%, from 12.41% to 7.15%. In 6,601 matched prompt-platform scenarios, 596 lost a Reddit citation while 190 gained one, more than three losses for every gain. The decline appeared across all four major high-stakes consumer decision families and was steepest in ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Key Findings
- On the full deduplicated monthly panel, Reddit's citation-event share declined from 3.81% in July to 2.76% in August and 2.14% in September.
- Reddit's overall response citation coverage declined from 12.41% in July to 9.41% in August and 7.12% in September.
- Reddit's overall rank by response citation coverage moved from #3 in July to #5 in August and #7 in September.
- Because September contained more verticals than July, we also used a balanced 46-vertical panel. The decline remained almost unchanged: 3.81% to 2.16% of citation events, a 43.3% relative decrease.
- In the balanced panel, response-level Reddit coverage declined from 12.41% to 7.15%, a 42.4% decrease.
- Among 43 verticals with non-zero Reddit citation share in July, 43 of 43 declined by September.
- The median relative decline across those 43 verticals was 44.1%.
- 39 of 43 declined by at least 25%, and 11 of 43 declined by at least 50%.
- In the strict matched scenario analysis, 596 prompts lost Reddit citations and 190 gained them, a 3.14-to-1 loss-to-gain ratio.
- The matched-pair Reddit response coverage fell from 15.74% to 9.59%, a 39.1% relative decline.
- The paired difference is statistically significant using an exact McNemar test, p < 0.001. The exact calculated p-value was approximately 1.48 × 10^-49.
- Reddit's decline differed sharply by platform. Citation-event share fell 75.9% in ChatGPT, 84.0% in Perplexity, 32.3% in Google AI Mode, 26.6% in Google AI Overviews, and 47.4% in Gemini.
- No Reddit citation events were captured in the Microsoft Copilot slice in any of the three months. We treat that as a capture result requiring platform-specific validation, not as proof that Copilot never cites Reddit.
- No single domain consistently replaced Reddit in matched scenarios that lost it. The most common newly appearing domain, Forbes, appeared in only 14.6% of those loss scenarios.

Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions
This study is observational, but the findings have direct commercial value because AI source selection is not static. Reddit's balanced citation-event share fell 43.3% in two months, matched scenarios recorded 3.14 losses for every gain, and the size of the decline differed sharply by platform. Those are not reasons to chase a single source or abandon Reddit. They are reasons to make source monitoring, publisher prioritization and platform-specific outreach part of the normal operating rhythm of AI search marketing.
This is also a practical example of the Persistence-Portability Gap. The broader research shows that leading citation source sets can remain persistent over time while authority transfers unevenly across platforms. This Reddit study adds another layer: even a highly visible source can experience substantial longitudinal decline inside a persistent aggregate source ecosystem. Portfolio persistence does not mean every individual source is stable, and visibility on one platform does not guarantee comparable visibility on another.
Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings
| Research finding | What publishers can responsibly say | What brands and CMOs can reasonably do |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit citation-event share fell 43.3% on the balanced panel | "Historical citation prominence can change materially even for a major source domain." | Re-check AI-search strategies that assume historical Reddit visibility is still current. Use recurring measurement rather than one-time source audits. |
| Matched scenarios produced 596 Reddit losses and 190 gains | "Longitudinal visibility is measurable at the same-prompt level, not only through aggregate rankings." | Maintain fixed prompt panels for commercially important queries and track source gains, losses and persistence over time. |
| ChatGPT and Perplexity declined much faster than Google's AI surfaces | "Citation authority can be platform-specific even when the source is globally well known." | Allocate monitoring, PR and publisher outreach by platform instead of treating AI search as one channel. |
| All 43 July-positive balanced verticals declined | "The Reddit decline was broad across the measured high-stakes categories, not isolated to one niche." | Treat the result as a portfolio risk signal. Audit the role Reddit plays in the brand's exact decision category rather than assuming one universal Reddit strategy. |
| No single domain consistently replaced Reddit | "The source market appears distributed rather than governed by one universal Reddit replacement." | Build a portfolio of third-party authority targets instead of attempting to replace Reddit with one publication. |
| Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode still cited Reddit materially in September | "Reddit remained commercially relevant on some AI surfaces despite large declines elsewhere." | Do not abandon Reddit solely because ChatGPT or Perplexity weakened. Match channel decisions to the platforms customers actually use. |
| Broad Ahrefs all-topic rankings still place Reddit near the top | "Citation prominence depends on the query universe and measurement method." | Evaluate category, intent, platform and time period before importing conclusions from a broad citation leaderboard into a commercial campaign. |
| Aggregate source portfolios can be persistent while Reddit itself declines | "A publisher can remain part of a durable source layer even while individual source rankings and citations move." | Use the Persistence-Portability framework to separate category-level source stability from source-specific and platform-specific volatility. |
| Citation visibility does not establish recommendation causality | "Our content is measurably visible in the AI source environment." | Use citation visibility to prioritize research, outreach and partnerships, then separately measure brand mentions, recommendation rate, ranking, sentiment and citation-recommendation coupling before claiming business impact. |
The commercial use case is straightforward: identify which sources matter for the brand's exact category, determine which of those sources matter on each AI platform, and keep measuring whether that authority persists. This research should inform day-to-day prioritization, but it should not be treated as proof that obtaining a citation or placement will cause an AI system to recommend a brand.

How This Study Fits the High-Stakes Consumer Decisions Research Corpus
This article is one part of a larger measurement system, and the related studies answer different questions:
- The 2026 AI Citation Authority Study establishes the overall source layer, concentration patterns and family-level persistence-versus-portability framework.
- Do AI Platforms Cite the Same Websites? measures cross-platform source overlap and explains why authority on one AI platform should not be assumed to transfer to another.
- How Stable Are AI Citations? measures same-prompt citation drift and shows why a persistent publisher portfolio can coexist with answer-level source turnover.
- The Persistence-Portability Gap measurement framework provides the language for separating temporal durability from cross-platform transferability.
- The four category Reddit studies break this parent result into credit/debt/banking/lending, insurance, investing/retirement/mortgage/financial, and health/medical decision families.
The studies should be read together. Article 01 describes the market structure, Article 03 describes platform fragmentation, Article 04 describes citation drift, and this article isolates how one unusually important source, Reddit, changed inside that system.

The Core Finding: Reddit's Decline Survives a Like-for-Like Test
The simplest way to challenge a July-to-September citation comparison is to ask whether the dataset changed.
It did.
The September corpus includes seven source verticals that did not have July datasets. Comparing raw monthly counts without controlling for that difference could produce a misleading conclusion.
We therefore created a balanced panel containing the 46 source verticals that exist in both July and September.
| Metric | July 2026 | September 2026 | Relative change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balanced-panel AI responses | 19,400 | 19,045 | -1.8% |
| Visible citation events | 92,154 | 81,608 | -11.4% |
| Reddit citation events | 3,513 | 1,765 | -49.8% |
| Reddit share of citation events | 3.81% | 2.16% | -43.3% |
| Responses citing Reddit | 2,408 | 1,362 | -43.4% |
| Reddit response citation coverage | 12.41% | 7.15% | -42.4% |
The balanced result is nearly the same as the full monthly panel. This makes it difficult to explain the decline as a simple artifact of additional September verticals.
This section answers the following questions
- Is the Reddit decline just a dataset-composition problem?
- Would Reddit still appear to decline if July and September used the same vertical universe?
- Can publishers or CMOs rely on the three-month aggregate rank without examining monthly movement?
For this dataset, the answer to the first question is no. The like-for-like panel still shows a decline of more than 40% in both citation-event share and response-level coverage.
Reddit Fell Month by Month, Not Just From One Endpoint to Another
Across the full deduplicated structural panel, Reddit's share moved downward in each month:
| Month | AI responses | Visible citation events | Reddit citation events | Reddit citation-event share | Responses citing Reddit | Reddit response coverage | Overall Reddit rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| July 2026 | 19,400 | 92,154 | 3,513 | 3.81% | 2,408 | 12.41% | #3 |
| August 2026 | 19,899 | 91,067 | 2,517 | 2.76% | 1,873 | 9.41% | #5 |
| September 2026 | 21,582 | 92,293 | 1,971 | 2.14% | 1,537 | 7.12% | #7 |
The aggregate 2026 AI Citation Authority Study still ranks Reddit among the most frequently cited domains across the full three-month window. That is precisely why longitudinal analysis matters. A strong aggregate position can coexist with a substantial recent decline.

The Matched-Prompt Test: More Than Three Reddit Losses for Every Gain
A balanced vertical panel controls category availability, but prompts can still change between months. We therefore ran a stricter test using only the same normalized prompt on the same raw platform surface in July and September.
To keep the paired analysis clean, a prompt-platform key was included only when there was exactly one deduplicated analytical observation in each month. 6,601 matched scenarios met that rule. Another 42 keys with multiple observations in at least one month were excluded from the strict pair test.
The result:
| July Reddit citation | September Reddit citation | Matched scenarios |
|---|---|---|
| Yes | Yes | 443 |
| Yes | No | 596 |
| No | Yes | 190 |
| No | No | 5,372 |
| Total | 6,601 |
There were 596 Reddit citation losses versus 190 gains.
That means a matched scenario was 3.14 times more likely to lose an existing Reddit citation than to gain a new one among the discordant pairs.
Reddit coverage within the matched set fell from 15.74% in July to 9.59% in September, a 39.1% relative decrease.
The exact McNemar paired test is highly significant, with p < 0.001. The exact calculated p-value is approximately 1.48 × 10^-49.
The statistical test matters because the observations are paired. But the commercially meaningful number is simpler: more than three Reddit citation losses occurred for every gain.
This section answers the following questions
- Did Reddit decline even when the exact same type of AI query was compared over time?
- Is the result large enough to matter commercially, not just statistically?
- Could the trend be explained entirely by different prompts being added in September?
The matched-pair evidence says the decline persists even after controlling for prompt and platform surface.

The Decline Was Broad Across High-Stakes Consumer Categories
The most important extension beyond earlier Reddit citation reports is the breadth of the decline inside consequential commercial categories.
Among the 46 verticals with both July and September data, 43 had measurable Reddit citation share in July. All 43 had a lower Reddit citation-event share in September.
Across those 43 verticals:
- median relative decline: 44.1%;
- verticals declining at least 25%: 39 of 43;
- verticals declining at least 50%: 11 of 43.
Three balanced-panel verticals had zero Reddit citation share in July. Addiction Treatment Centers and Assisted Living Facilities had small non-zero Reddit shares in September, while Mental Health Treatment Centers remained at zero. Those three are excluded from the "43 of 43 declined" denominator because there was no positive July Reddit share to decline from.
Selected vertical examples
| Vertical | July Reddit share | September Reddit share | Relative change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit Cards | 7.32% | 2.06% | -71.8% |
| Credit Cards for Building Credit | 5.77% | 2.53% | -56.2% |
| Student Loans | 2.93% | 1.25% | -57.3% |
| Pet Insurance | 7.05% | 3.65% | -48.2% |
| Travel Insurance | 3.53% | 2.11% | -40.3% |
| Mortgage | 3.50% | 1.68% | -52.1% |
| Online Financial Advisors | 8.59% | 5.19% | -39.6% |
| Crypto Exchanges | 4.81% | 3.07% | -36.2% |
| Online Therapy | 4.30% | 2.22% | -48.4% |
| Online Pharmacies | 2.28% | 0.54% | -76.1% |
These examples are descriptive slices, not independently weighted experiments. The full vertical-level export should be used when evaluating a specific market.
All Four High-Stakes Consumer Decision Families Declined
The verticals were also grouped into four broad commercial research families. For this comparison, each family uses only verticals available in both July and September.
| High-stakes consumer decision family | Balanced verticals | July Reddit event share | September Reddit event share | Relative change | July response coverage | September response coverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending | 13 | 4.26% | 2.29% | -46.2% | 14.44% | 7.98% |
| Insurance | 9 | 3.36% | 1.92% | -43.0% | 11.53% | 6.80% |
| Investing, Retirement, Mortgage and Financial Decisions | 11 | 4.95% | 3.31% | -33.1% | 15.05% | 9.64% |
| Health and Medical | 13 | 2.13% | 0.99% | -53.5% | 6.93% | 3.63% |
The steepest category-level decline in Reddit citation-event share occurred in Health and Medical, while the smallest decline occurred in Investing, Retirement, Mortgage and Financial Decisions. But all four families moved in the same direction.
This section answers the following questions
- Was Reddit's decline limited to finance or technology-oriented queries?
- Did healthcare and insurance AI answers show the same trend?
- Should publishers assume Reddit behaves similarly across every commercial category?
The broad direction was consistent, but the magnitude was not. That is why LLM Authority Index is publishing category-specific Reddit analyses rather than treating Reddit as one universal AI-search signal.

The Reddit Decline Was Much Steeper on Some AI Platforms Than Others
The platform split is one of the most commercially important findings in the study.
| AI platform | July Reddit citation-event share | August | September | July to September change | July response coverage | September response coverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | 3.65% | 3.01% | 2.68% | -26.6% | 13.22% | 10.14% |
| Google AI Mode | 3.54% | 2.87% | 2.40% | -32.3% | 15.84% | 12.47% |
| ChatGPT | 9.43% | 4.61% | 2.28% | -75.9% | 30.97% | 7.19% |
| Perplexity | 3.50% | 3.60% | 0.56% | -84.0% | 7.48% | 0.87% |
| Gemini | 1.55% | 0.62% | 0.82% | -47.4% | 2.34% | 1.10% |
| Microsoft Copilot | 0.00% | 0.00% | 0.00% | N/A | 0.00% | 0.00% |
The pattern is not "Reddit fell equally everywhere."
It is closer to:
- ChatGPT: very large decline;
- Perplexity: very large decline, concentrated late in the study window;
- Google AI Mode: meaningful but much gentler decline;
- Google AI Overviews: meaningful but gentler decline;
- Gemini: low baseline with a decline from July, though September was above August;
- Copilot: no Reddit citation events were captured in this pipeline.
The Copilot result needs special caution. A zero in a captured citation corpus can reflect platform behavior, citation-surface behavior, or collection mechanics. Until the Copilot capture path is independently audited, the responsible statement is:
No Reddit citation events appeared in the captured Microsoft Copilot dataset used for this study.
It is not responsible to generalize that to "Microsoft Copilot never cites Reddit."
This section answers the following questions
- Should a brand use the same Reddit strategy for Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT?
- Is Reddit still materially present in Google's AI citation ecosystem?
- Which platforms showed the steepest Reddit citation losses?
The data argues strongly for platform-specific measurement. Reddit remained present in more than 10% of September Google AI Overview responses and more than 12% of September Google AI Mode responses in this high-stakes panel, while the September response-coverage rates were much lower in ChatGPT and Perplexity.

What Appeared When Reddit Disappeared?
The matched-pair design also lets us examine the 596 scenarios that cited Reddit in July but not in September.
There was no single replacement domain.
Among those 596 Reddit-loss scenarios, the most common domains that newly appeared in September were:
| Newly appearing domain | Reddit-loss scenarios where it newly appeared | Share of 596 loss scenarios |
|---|---|---|
| forbes.com | 87 | 14.6% |
| money.com | 70 | 11.7% |
| youtube.com | 58 | 9.7% |
| yahoo.com | 48 | 8.1% |
| investopedia.com | 48 | 8.1% |
| nerdwallet.com | 45 | 7.6% |
| wsj.com | 39 | 6.5% |
| google.com | 36 | 6.0% |
| cnbc.com | 34 | 5.7% |
| bankrate.com | 25 | 4.2% |
These domains should not be described as causal replacements. A domain can newly appear for many reasons, and multiple new sources can appear in one response.
The useful finding is narrower: Reddit's losses were dispersed across many other sources rather than shifting cleanly to one replacement publisher.
For CMOs and publishers, that suggests a portfolio approach may be more durable than treating one community platform as the universal path to AI citation visibility.
Does This Mean Brands Should Stop Investing in Reddit?
No. The data does not support that conclusion.
This study measures citation visibility, not the total value of Reddit as a marketing, community, reputation, research, discovery, or brand-demand channel.
It also does not measure whether an AI system used Reddit during retrieval but ultimately cited another source. Search Engine Journal highlighted exactly this kind of uncertainty when covering the August ChatGPT citation decline: a visible-citation drop does not, by itself, prove why the change happened or that Reddit disappeared from the retrieval process.
A more defensible conclusion is:
Reddit citation visibility became materially less reliable in this high-stakes consumer-decision panel between July and September 2026, and the magnitude of that change depended heavily on the AI platform.
For an AI-search strategy, Reddit should therefore be evaluated as one source channel among several, not as a universal shortcut to visibility across every model.

What This Means for CMOs and Brands
The commercial question is not simply, "Is Reddit good or bad for AI search?"
The better questions are:
- Does Reddit still appear frequently for my exact category?
- Which AI platforms matter most to my customers?
- Which third-party publishers remain visible when Reddit declines?
- Are those publishers consistently cited over several months?
- Can we build authority across several independent sources instead of depending on one UGC platform?
A brand focused primarily on Google AI Overviews would draw a different conclusion from this dataset than a brand focused primarily on ChatGPT or Perplexity.
The LLM Authority Index platform comparison study is designed to quantify that broader source fragmentation.
Commercial takeaway for CMOs
A useful earned-media target is not simply a website with a high historical AI citation count. A stronger target is a publication that has:
- meaningful citation visibility in the brand's exact category;
- visibility on the AI platforms that matter to the business;
- persistence across multiple months;
- a source type and editorial relationship the brand can realistically engage;
- evidence that is independent of the brand's own website.
What This Means for Publishers
For publishers, Reddit's volatility creates both a warning and an opportunity.
The warning is that AI citation visibility can change quickly. A publisher should not build its entire commercial AI-search pitch around one month's rank.
The opportunity is that brands need durable third-party sources beyond community platforms. A publisher that can demonstrate repeated citation visibility in a commercially valuable vertical can use independent research to show prospective advertisers or partners that its content already appears inside the source ecosystem surrounding high-stakes consumer decisions.
The responsible publisher claim is:
Our content is measurably visible among sources cited by AI platforms in this category.
The irresponsible claim is:
Publishing with us will make AI recommend your brand.
This research does not establish that causal relationship.
This section answers the following questions
- Can publishers use independent AI citation data in advertiser sales materials?
- Does Reddit's decline make independent editorial publishers more commercially relevant to AI-search campaigns?
- What proof should a publisher show before claiming AI-search authority?
The strongest proof is category-specific, platform-specific, and longitudinal.

How This Study Relates to Prior Reddit Citation Research
The Reddit decline is not an original observation unique to LLM Authority Index. That is important context.
PromptWatch documented an abrupt ChatGPT Search decline
PromptWatch reported that Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations averaged 3.83% from July 18 through August 7, 2026, then fell to 0.52% from August 14 through August 17, an 86.4% relative decline. PromptWatch also found much smaller, more gradual declines in Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode over the same period.
Source: PromptWatch, "Why Did ChatGPT Stop Citing Reddit?"
That directional pattern is notably similar to LLM Authority Index: the steepest ChatGPT decline and gentler Google declines appear independently in both datasets.
Search Engine Journal cautioned that the cause was not established
Search Engine Journal's coverage of the PromptWatch findings emphasized that the timing did not fully explain the cause and that PromptWatch could not initially rule out a data-collection issue.
Source: Search Engine Journal, "Why Reddit's ChatGPT Citation Drop Isn't Fully Explained"
The LLM Authority Index result is useful because it comes from a separate dataset and methodology. The decline appears not only in an aggregate ChatGPT measure, but across a broad high-stakes commercial panel and in exact matched prompt-platform comparisons.
That independent replication reduces, but does not eliminate, concern that the observed direction is unique to a single vendor's tracking system. It still does not establish the underlying cause.
Tinuiti shows why social citation trends must be tracked by platform
The existing Q2 2026 Tinuiti citation research documented an earlier decline in Perplexity social citation share, including Reddit, across commercial categories. Tinuiti's Q3 2026 report adds an important later-period context: most tracked AI platforms were at or near Q3 highs in social citation share, while Perplexity remained a notable exception.
Sources:
The relevance to this study is not that Tinuiti and LLM Authority Index report the same percentages. They do not use the same query population, categories or denominators. The useful agreement is directional: social-source behavior can move differently by AI platform, and Perplexity can behave differently from the broader market. That is consistent with this study's finding that Reddit's decline was much steeper in Perplexity and ChatGPT than on Google's AI surfaces.
Ahrefs shows why query universe matters
There is an important counterpoint.
Ahrefs' September 2026 all-topic U.S. rankings still place Reddit #1 in ChatGPT, #1 in Google AI Mode, #1 in Perplexity, #1 in Gemini, and #2 in Google AI Overviews by its own mention-share methodology.
Sources:
- Ahrefs, most-cited domains in ChatGPT
- Ahrefs, most-cited domains in Google AI Mode
- Ahrefs, most-cited domains in Google AI Overviews
- Ahrefs, most-cited domains in Perplexity
- Ahrefs, most-cited domains in Gemini
That does not invalidate either dataset. Ahrefs tracks a very large broad query universe and reports a different share metric. LLM Authority Index is intentionally restricted to consequential consumer decisions and uses response-level and citation-event measures within that panel.
The apparent disagreement is itself useful evidence that "How much does AI cite Reddit?" does not have one universal percentage. The answer depends on the platform, query population, period, and denominator.

How This Study Is Different
This study is designed to answer a narrower question than broad web citation rankings:
How did Reddit's visible citation role change inside high-stakes consumer decision queries across multiple AI platforms and commercial categories?
The principal differences are:
High-stakes commercial focus
The panel concentrates on credit, debt, banking, lending, insurance, investing, retirement, mortgage, financial, health, and medical decisions.
Four commercial families and dozens of verticals
The study can test whether a headline trend is concentrated in one niche or repeats across a broader commercial decision universe.
Six AI platform families
Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot are measured under one analytical framework.
Three-month panel
The July-August-September structure distinguishes an aggregate rank from recent direction.
Balanced vertical comparison
The July-to-September headline comparison is rerun on the 46 verticals present in both months.
Strict paired prompt-platform test
6,601 exact normalized prompt-plus-raw-platform pairs are compared across July and September, with ambiguous multi-observation keys excluded.
Vertical breadth test
The analysis measures whether Reddit declines in a small set of large verticals or broadly across the commercial panel.
Response-level and event-level metrics
A response containing several Reddit URLs is different from several independent responses citing Reddit. Both are reported separately.
Verticals Covered in the Source Study
The parent research corpus spans 53 source vertical labels. The balanced July-to-September Reddit comparison contains 46 of them because seven source verticals did not have July datasets.
Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending
Auto Refinance Loans; Bad Credit Loans; Best Banks; Certificates of Deposits; Credit Cards; Credit Cards for Building Credit; Credit Monitoring; Credit Repair; Debt Relief & Consolidation; Home Equity Loans; Money Market Accounts; Personal Loans and Online Lenders; Savings Account; Student Loan Refinance; Student Loans; Tax Relief.
Insurance
Car Insurance; Dental Insurance; Disability Insurance; Health Insurance; Life Insurance Companies; Long-Term Care Insurance; Medicare Supplement Insurance; Pet Insurance; Renters Insurance; Short Term Health Insurance; Travel Insurance; Vision Insurance.
Investing, Retirement, Mortgage and Financial Decisions
Annuities; Crypto Exchanges; Crypto Wallets; Gold IRAs and Precious Metals Dealers; Mortgage; Mortgage Refinance Lenders; Online Financial Advisors; Online Stock Brokers; Reverse Mortgage; Robo-Advisors; Structured Settlements.
Health and Medical
Addiction Treatment Centers; Assisted Living Facilities; Dental Implants; Fertility Clinics; Hearing Aids; Home Health Care; IVF Clinics; Medical Alert Systems; Mental Health Treatment Centers; Online Doctors; Online Pharmacies; Online Therapy; STD Tests; Weight Loss and Metabolic Health.
Closely related verticals can share prompts. The overall corpus therefore applies explicit repeated-record handling, while the vertical trend audit deduplicates within each originating vertical so each vertical can be described on its own terms.

Why Reddit Citation Studies Can Disagree
Reddit is a particularly good example of why AI citation percentages should not be compared without examining methodology.
Two studies can both be correct while reporting very different Reddit shares because they may differ in:
- query intent;
- category mix;
- commercial versus informational prompts;
- collection dates;
- country or locale;
- ChatGPT Search versus another ChatGPT surface;
- logged-in or personalized behavior;
- whether only cited responses enter the denominator;
- whether citation events or response-level domain presence are counted;
- how repeated URLs from the same domain are treated;
- whether platform-owned results, maps, products, images, and navigation links are included;
- domain and subdomain normalization;
- how failed or missing observations are handled;
- whether the dataset is a fixed panel or a changing query population.
For this reason, the 9.43% July ChatGPT Reddit event share in the LLM Authority Index panel should not be treated as the same statistic as PromptWatch's 3.83% baseline or Ahrefs' September mention-share percentage.
The defensible comparison is that multiple independent datasets show Reddit citation behavior changing substantially, while the exact magnitude varies with methodology and query universe.
Methodology
This Reddit analysis is a child study of the 2026 AI Citation Authority Study. The parent methodology governs source preservation, extraction-failure treatment, domain normalization, infrastructure exclusions, and corpus-wide repeated-record handling.
Source archive
The July-September source archive contains 68,184 raw AI response observations and 310,071 raw citation entries before analytical cleaning.
The parent structural analysis excludes 1,278 observations explicitly marked as extraction failures and applies exact repeated-record handling, resulting in 60,881 deduplicated AI responses and 278,499 visible citation events.
Reddit identification
Citation URLs are normalized to registrable domains using the Public Suffix List. A citation event is classified as Reddit when the normalized registrable domain is reddit.com.
Citation-event share
For a given analytical slice:
Reddit citation-event share = Reddit citation events / all eligible visible citation events
This metric can count multiple Reddit URLs within one response.
Response citation coverage
For a given analytical slice:
Reddit response citation coverage = eligible responses containing at least one Reddit citation / all eligible responses
A response counts no more than once, regardless of how many Reddit URLs it contains.
Balanced July-to-September panel
Only source verticals with datasets in both July and September are included. This produces 46 balanced verticals.
Missing July datasets are treated as unavailable, not as zero-citation observations.
Strict matched prompt-platform analysis
The matched-pair key is:
normalized prompt text + exact raw platform surface
Prompt normalization uses Unicode NFKC normalization, case folding, whitespace collapse, and trimming.
A key is included only if exactly one deduplicated analytical observation exists in July and exactly one exists in September. This produces 6,601 matched scenarios. 42 ambiguous keys with multiple observations in at least one month are excluded from the strict paired test.
McNemar test
Reddit presence is binary within each matched response: present or absent.
The discordant pairs are:
- July yes, September no: 596;
- July no, September yes: 190.
An exact two-sided McNemar test, equivalent to an exact binomial test on the discordant pairs under a 0.5 null, produces p ≈ 1.48 × 10^-49.
We report p < 0.001 in the main narrative and emphasize the effect size, 3.14 losses for every gain, because it is more interpretable commercially.
Vertical trend audit
For the statement that all 43 July-positive verticals declined, observations are deduplicated within originating vertical using month, raw platform surface, normalized prompt, and exact citation URL set.
This preserves each vertical as its own descriptive slice. Because prompts can overlap across verticals, these vertical-level results should not be summed to recreate the corpus-wide total.
Platform families
Google keyword and non-keyword collection lanes are grouped into Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode for public reporting. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot remain their own platform families.
Infrastructure exclusions
Obvious non-content infrastructure such as Bing image hosts, certain map or click wrappers, OpenAI image hosts, and Google account-activity pages are excluded from public citation denominators. Reddit itself is unaffected by these exclusions, but denominator hygiene matters when calculating citation share.

Limitations
- This is not a random sample of all AI prompts. It is deliberately concentrated on high-stakes commercial consumer decisions.
- The study measures visible citations, not every source retrieved internally by an AI platform. A system may retrieve Reddit and ultimately cite another source.
- The platform families do not have equal response or citation volumes. Cross-platform raw totals should not be interpreted as market share.
- The full July and September datasets have different vertical coverage. This is why the primary longitudinal claim uses the balanced 46-vertical panel and the matched-prompt test.
- Prompt overlap exists across some vertical exports. Corpus-wide and vertical-specific analyses therefore use different explicit deduplication scopes.
- A decline in Reddit citations does not identify the cause. Retrieval changes, ranking changes, prompt behavior, product changes, external search infrastructure, or collection mechanics could contribute.
- The captured Copilot zero requires additional platform-specific audit. It is not evidence that Copilot universally avoids Reddit.
- Three months is enough to detect a material change in this panel, but not enough to determine whether the decline is permanent.
- Citation does not equal recommendation. This study does not establish that Reddit citations cause or prevent a brand recommendation.
- External studies use different denominators and query populations. Their percentages are not directly interchangeable with LLM Authority Index metrics.
