A three-month citation-authority study across 12 insurance verticals, 1,272 deduplicated ChatGPT responses, 6,056 visible citation events, and 670 cited registrable domains.
ChatGPT's insurance source market is unusually concentrated in this panel. Forbes appears in almost half of eligible insurance responses, NerdWallet in nearly three in ten, and the Top 100 domains account for almost three-quarters of all response-level domain appearances.
At the same time, the monthly Top 100 is much less persistent than the insurance source markets observed in Google AI Mode or Google AI Overviews. That combination matters commercially: a relatively small set of publishers can dominate aggregate visibility even while the lower portion of the source list rotates substantially over time.
Answer Capsule
LLM Authority Index analyzed 1,272 deduplicated ChatGPT insurance responses from July through September 2026. Forbes ranked #1 at 48.3% response citation coverage, followed by NerdWallet at 29.1%, Reddit at 15.2%, MoneyGeek at 13.3% and Squaremouth at 10.7%. The Top 100 captured 73.5% of domain-response appearances, compared with 58.8% in the broader ChatGPT high-stakes study. Only 38 domains stayed in the insurance Top 100 in all three months. The result is a source market that is simultaneously more concentrated at the top and less persistent in the long tail than the broader ChatGPT panel.
Key Findings
- forbes.com ranks #1 at 48.3% response coverage.
- The next four domains are nerdwallet.com (29.1%), reddit.com (15.2%), moneygeek.com (13.3%), and squaremouth.com (10.7%).
- The Top 100 account for 73.5% of domain-response appearances in this insurance slice, compared with 58.8% in the broader ChatGPT high-stakes study.
- 38 domains stayed in this insurance Top 100 in all three months, compared with 49 in the broader ChatGPT study.
- The insurance Top 100 shares 55 domains with the all-platform Insurance Top 100, but only 41 with the broader ChatGPT Top 100.
- It shares 50 domains with the Google AI Mode insurance Top 100, underscoring that platform choice changes the practical publisher opportunity set.
Additional findings:
- Forbes appears in 615 of 1,272 responses, or 48.3% of the eligible ChatGPT insurance panel.
- MoneyGeek ranks #4 overall in ChatGPT insurance even though it ranks far lower in the broader ChatGPT high-stakes study, showing strong category specialization.
- Squaremouth ranks #5 overall despite appearing primarily in Travel Insurance, demonstrating how a dominant specialist can break into the aggregate Top 10.
- The July-August Top 100 shares only 48 domains, and the July-September lists share only 46.
- ChatGPT insurance shares only 50 Top 100 domains with Google AI Mode insurance and 52 with Google AI Overviews insurance, much lower than the 87-domain overlap between the two Google insurance surfaces.
- Forbes leads Dental Insurance, Disability Insurance, Long-Term Care Insurance, Pet Insurance, Short Term Health Insurance, Travel Insurance and Vision Insurance in this panel.

- What do the results mean for publishers, carriers, brokers and CMOs?
Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions
This study is research-based, but its purpose is commercial decision support.
This Article sits at the intersection of two commercially useful views of the same source market:
- the ChatGPT platform view, which asks which sources recur across high-stakes decisions on one AI platform; and
- the Insurance category view, which asks which sources recur across six AI platforms for one insurance decision family.
For publishers, that intersection creates a more precise commercial claim than simply saying a site is "visible in ChatGPT." A publisher can document whether its visibility is strong specifically inside ChatGPT for insurance decisions, whether that visibility persists over time, and whether its authority is broad across several insurance products or concentrated in one specialist category.
For carriers, brokers, comparison sites, insurtechs and CMOs, the operating question is:
Which sources are already present around the exact insurance decisions our customers ask ChatGPT to help them make?
Three findings matter for daily planning:
- the Top 100 account for 73.5% of domain-response appearances in this insurance ChatGPT slice;
- only 38 domains remained in the Top 100 in July, August and September; and
- the median of the three monthly Top 100 Jaccard comparisons was 31.6%.
That combination is commercially important. The source market is highly concentrated at the top, but much less persistent over time than the Google insurance source markets measured in this series.
The final validated Insurance child studies show that the ChatGPT insurance Top 100 shared 52 domains with Google AI Overviews, 50 with Google AI Mode, 43 with Perplexity and 38 with Gemini. The Microsoft Copilot Insurance child file is currently corrupted and duplicates Gemini content, so this article does not use that child file to calculate a ChatGPT vs. Copilot overlap.
The parent Insurance category study remains the authoritative six-platform summary. It reports 80.2% temporal persistence, 29.0% cross-platform portability, and an approximate 51.2 percentage-point Persistence-Portability Gap under the published summary-based methodology.
That category gap is exploratory. It is based on published category summary statistics, not a new platform-by-month controlled experiment.
The defensible commercial conclusion is:
ChatGPT insurance authority is highly concentrated, but its broader source set rotates much more aggressively over time than the Google insurance source markets, and it still does not transfer cleanly to other AI engines.
Current outside research helps explain why ChatGPT Insurance studies can produce very different source hierarchies.
Conductor's 2026 Insurance benchmark reports that ChatGPT accounted for 11.9% of insurance citations in its seven-engine corpus and averaged 4.7 citations per answer. Conductor insurance benchmarks
Ahrefs' broad September 2026 U.S. ChatGPT benchmark instead ranks Reddit #1 at 16.8% mention share, followed by Wikipedia, Consumer Reports and Forbes. Ahrefs ChatGPT citations
Temso's Q2 multinational insurance study found that 18.3% of ChatGPT insurance citations were user-generated content and that Reddit alone accounted for about 16% of ChatGPT citations in its monitored corpus. It also found only about 25% Top-20 source overlap between ChatGPT and each of the other models in its four-model comparison. Temso insurance source study
Those studies use different prompts, countries, source taxonomies, time windows and denominators. Their percentages should not be merged with this ranking. The useful agreement is structural: ChatGPT source behavior is highly dependent on prompt population, source role and measurement contract.
Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings
| Research finding | What insurance publishers can responsibly say | What carriers, brokers and CMOs can reasonably do |
|---|---|---|
| Forbes, NerdWallet, Reddit, MoneyGeek and Squaremouth lead this insurance ChatGPT source map | "Our domain is measurably visible in ChatGPT for high-stakes insurance decisions." | Use the category leaders as a strategic research tier, then evaluate fit for the exact insurance product and prompt cluster. |
| The Top 100 account for 73.5% of domain-response appearances | "Insurance ChatGPT sourcing is highly concentrated in this measured panel." | Start with the recurring high-authority source layer before expanding into specialists and the long tail. |
| Only 38 domains remained in the Top 100 across all three months | "A strong one-month ChatGPT Insurance position should not be described as durable without longitudinal evidence." | Refresh source-priority lists on a fixed cadence instead of treating one benchmark as permanent. |
| Median monthly Top 100 persistence is 31.6% | "The broader ChatGPT Insurance source portfolio changed substantially during the study window." | Treat current measurement as operating infrastructure. Track gains, losses and replacements around priority prompts. |
| ChatGPT shares 52 Insurance Top 100 domains with AI Overviews and 50 with AI Mode | "ChatGPT overlaps with Google Insurance source markets, but the lists are far from interchangeable." | Do not copy a Google publisher list into ChatGPT strategy. Maintain a ChatGPT-specific source layer. |
| ChatGPT shares only 43 Insurance Top 100 domains with Perplexity and 38 with Gemini | "Strong ChatGPT Insurance visibility does not establish broad cross-platform authority." | Check source portability before allocating cross-platform PR, content or partnership resources. |
| The Insurance parent study reports a 51.2-point exploratory Persistence-Portability Gap | "Insurance source authority was much more persistent over time than portable across platforms in the parent category analysis." | Separate the time question from the platform question when deciding which publishers deserve ongoing investment. |
| Only 41 domains overlap with ChatGPT's overall high-stakes Top 100 | "Category-specific ChatGPT authority can be commercially meaningful even without broad platform-wide rank." | Use insurance-specific source maps instead of generic lists of sites ChatGPT cites. |
| Squaremouth, MoneyGeek and other specialists rise sharply inside specific insurance decisions | "Our strongest authority may be product-specific rather than category-wide." | Build source strategy at the exact insurance-product and prompt-cluster level. |
| Temso finds unusually high ChatGPT reliance on user-generated insurance sources in its multinational panel | "Community visibility can be part of the ChatGPT source environment." | Measure community sources separately from editorial, comparison and first-party sources instead of treating all citations as the same opportunity. |
| Conductor and Ahrefs produce very different ChatGPT Insurance and all-topic source hierarchies | "Citation leadership depends on query population, geography, denominator and source classification." | Require methodology and prompt-population fit before using a third-party visibility benchmark for budget decisions. |
| Citation visibility does not establish recommendation causality | "Our content is measurably present in the visible ChatGPT source layer." | Use citation data to prioritize research, PR and content work, then separately measure mentions, recommendation rate, rank, sentiment and citation-recommendation coupling. |
| Mentions or share of voice alone do not solve attribution | "Source visibility is one observable layer, not proof of commercial influence." | Treat mentions, recommendations, sentiment, citations and downstream business outcomes as separate measurements rather than collapsing them into one visibility percentage. |
The daily operating model is therefore four-layered:
- Current insurance ChatGPT core: maintain the sources that matter now, with the collection date attached.
- Product-specific layer: identify which sources dominate the exact insurance decision.
- Longitudinal check: monitor whether the priority source set persists, declines or rotates.
- Cross-platform check: determine whether the same sources also matter in Google AI Search, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot.
Citation visibility is evidence of source presence. It is not proof that obtaining coverage, advertising, a partnership or a placement on a cited domain will cause ChatGPT to recommend an insurer or product.

ChatGPT Insurance Is More Concentrated Than Broad ChatGPT
| Top N domains | Share of domain-response appearances | Share of visible citation events |
|---|---|---|
| Top 10 | 36.3% | 39.6% |
| Top 25 | 49.3% | 52.0% |
| Top 50 | 60.6% | 62.7% |
| Top 100 | 73.5% | 74.9% |
The Top 100 account for 73.5% of response-level domain appearances in ChatGPT insurance, compared with 58.8% in the broader ChatGPT high-stakes study. The Top 25 alone account for 49.3%.
The implication is straightforward: insurance-specific ChatGPT source visibility is dominated by a smaller publisher and first-party set than the platform-wide leaderboard suggests.
This section answers
- Is the source market narrower in insurance? Yes, in this panel.
- Does concentration eliminate the long tail? No. The lower ranks rotate considerably month to month.
- Can a specialist break into the aggregate Top 10? Yes. Squaremouth does so through concentrated Travel Insurance authority.
Which Sources Gain the Most Inside ChatGPT Insurance?
The downloadable table compares insurance response coverage with broad ChatGPT high-stakes response coverage.
Several domains show unusually strong insurance specialization:
- MoneyGeek: 13.3% in ChatGPT insurance versus 3.2% across broad ChatGPT, about 4.1 times the platform-wide rate.
- Squaremouth: 10.7% versus 2.3%, about 4.6 times.
- Becker's Payer Issues: 5.9% versus 1.3%, about 4.6 times.
- ValuePenguin: 5.8% versus 1.4%, about 4.2 times.
- Insurance.com: 5.5% versus 1.3%, about 4.2 times.
- Progressive, Humana, State Farm, GEICO and Allstate also show large category lifts.
By contrast, Reddit is strong in absolute terms but its insurance response coverage is slightly below its broad ChatGPT response coverage. That distinction matters when deciding whether a domain is broadly prominent or specifically over-indexed in insurance.

ChatGPT Insurance Authority Is More Publisher-Heavy at the Top
The ChatGPT insurance Top 10 contains several broad financial or editorial publishers: Forbes, NerdWallet, Reddit, MoneyGeek, Money.com and The Wall Street Journal. It also contains Squaremouth, Becker's Payer Issues, ValuePenguin and Insurance.com.
Carrier-owned domains become more visible just below that top group, including Progressive, Humana, State Farm, USAA, GEICO, Allstate, Cigna, Aetna and UnitedHealthcare.
This pattern suggests two separate optimization paths:
- Earned-source visibility through publishers and specialists that recur in the relevant buying journey.
- First-party citability through clear product, coverage, eligibility and pricing information on company-owned properties.
A strong AI-search strategy should measure both.
ChatGPT Insurance Rankings Were Much Less Persistent Than the Google Insurance Rankings
| Pair | Shared Top 100 domains | Jaccard similarity |
|---|---|---|
| July vs. August | 48 | 31.6% |
| July vs. September | 46 | 29.9% |
| August vs. September | 73 | 57.5% |
Only 38 domains remained in the ChatGPT insurance Top 100 in all three months.
July-August Top 100 Jaccard similarity was 31.6%. July-September was 29.9%. August-September improved to 57.5%.
That is far less persistent than Google AI Mode insurance, where 81 domains stayed in the Top 100 all three months, or Google AI Overviews insurance, where 82 did.
The top two domains are stable, however. Forbes ranked #1 in July, August and September. NerdWallet ranked #2 in all three months. Much of the instability appears below the very top of the market.
Reddit illustrates the movement: #3 in July, #4 in August and #8 in September. Squaremouth moved from #9 to #6 to #3. Money.com moved from #13 to #3 to #4.
The commercial implication is that ChatGPT insurance measurement should be repeated on a fixed cadence. A one-time screenshot can overstate the permanence of lower-ranked source opportunities.

ChatGPT Insurance Differs Sharply From the Other Insurance Source Markets
The ChatGPT insurance Top 100 shares 52 domains with Google AI Overviews insurance, 50 with Google AI Mode insurance, 43 with Perplexity insurance and 38 with Gemini insurance.
Those are substantial differences for a prompt family held to the same broad Insurance decision category.
The contrast with the two Google surfaces is especially useful. Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews share 87 Insurance Top 100 domains, while ChatGPT overlaps with each Google surface on only about half of the list.
The Microsoft Copilot Insurance child document is not used for this comparison because its current body and front matter duplicate the Gemini study. The parent Insurance category study remains the six-platform source of record until Article 36 is repaired.
A publisher can therefore be highly visible in ChatGPT Insurance but much less central in Google's, Gemini's or Perplexity's insurance source universe, and vice versa.
The practical implication is not that every platform requires a completely separate strategy. It is that brands should measure portability before assuming it and preserve platform-level detail in publisher research, outreach planning and performance reporting.
How This Study Relates to Other Insurance and AI Search Research
Conductor: insurance citation share across answer engines
Conductor's 2026 insurance benchmark analyzes more than 3.6 million insurance brand citations across seven answer engines and more than 178,000 prompts from January through May 2026. In that corpus, ChatGPT accounted for 11.9% of insurance answer-engine citations and averaged 4.7 citations per answer. (Conductor insurance benchmarks)
Conductor's insurance-industry classification means it emphasizes insurance-domain leaders such as Insureon, Progressive and The Hartford. LLMAI instead starts from insurance prompts and retains every cited domain, so broad publishers such as Forbes and NerdWallet can lead.
The two studies therefore answer different questions.
Ahrefs: broad all-topic ChatGPT rankings
Ahrefs' September 2026 U.S. ChatGPT study reports Reddit at 16.8% mention share, followed by Wikipedia at 7.0%, Consumer Reports at 3.7% and Forbes at 3.1% among its tracked top sources. (Ahrefs ChatGPT citations)
LLMAI's insurance panel ranks Forbes #1 and Reddit #3. The difference is consistent with a much narrower commercial prompt population and a different denominator. Ahrefs ranks citation mention share among top domains across broad U.S. queries. LLMAI ranks response-level domain coverage inside high-stakes insurance prompts.
Neither ordering should be treated as universal outside its measurement contract.
Tinuiti and Profound: commercial prompt methodology
Tinuiti's 2026 citation-trends research tracks mid-to-lower-funnel prompts across multiple commercial categories and platforms. It explicitly notes that prompt populations are selective and that platforms differ in citation depth, so raw citation counts should not be treated as directly comparable platform popularity measures. (Tinuiti Q1 AI Citation Trends)
That is closely aligned with LLMAI's use of response-level domain presence as the primary metric.

How the LLM Authority Index Study Is Different
This study is designed around a narrow intersection:
- ChatGPT;
- Insurance;
- 12 source vertical labels;
- a July-September 2026 panel;
- response-level registrable-domain citation coverage;
- raw citation events as a secondary measure;
- explicit exact-repeat handling and extraction-failure accounting;
- comparison against broad ChatGPT, all-platform Insurance, Google AI Mode insurance and Google AI Overviews insurance; and
- commercial interpretation for publishers and insurance marketers.
The study does not claim that the Top 100 represent every source ChatGPT may use or every possible insurance query.
Why ChatGPT Insurance Citation Studies Can Disagree
Common reasons include:
- Prompt population and intent mix.
- Geography and product availability.
- Collection date and model/product version.
- Whether citations are visible, inferred or extracted through a third-party provider.
- Whether the unit is raw citation count, response coverage, citation share or URL frequency.
- Domain versus URL normalization.
- Duplicate handling.
- Whether broad publishers and non-insurance sources are retained.
- Vertical sample sizes.
- Personalization and account context.
A difference in rank is not automatically evidence that one study is wrong.
What the Results Mean for Insurance Publishers
Forbes has a particularly strong commercial proof point in this slice: it appears in 48.3% of eligible ChatGPT insurance responses and leads seven of the 12 vertical slices listed here.
NerdWallet shows a different strength: consistent breadth and leadership in Life Insurance, Medicare Supplement and Renters Insurance.
MoneyGeek and Squaremouth show how category specialists or category-focused publishers can over-index dramatically compared with broad ChatGPT rankings.
Publishers should frame these findings as measured citation visibility in a defined panel, not as AI endorsement or recommendation causality.
What the Results Mean for Insurance CMOs and Brands
A useful execution process is:
- Benchmark the exact ChatGPT prompt clusters that matter commercially.
- Separate brand mentions, recommendations and citations.
- Identify recurring cited publishers and first-party competitors.
- Compare ChatGPT opportunities with Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews rather than assuming one platform represents all AI search.
- Prioritize outreach based on source recurrence, vertical relevance and realistic editorial fit.
- Improve first-party pages that answer pricing, eligibility, comparison and coverage questions directly.
- Re-run the same prompt panel monthly or quarterly because source persistence is lower here than in the Google insurance slices.

Methodology
Parent dataset
This article uses the frozen July-September 2026 LLM Authority Index archive described in the flagship study.
Eligible platform and category
The analytical slice includes records whose platform family is ChatGPT and whose research-family membership includes Insurance.
Global exact-repeat handling
Eligible non-failed observations are deduplicated globally before category filtering using month, exact raw surface, normalized prompt text and the exact set of original citation URLs.
This is an anti-double-counting rule, not proof that a prompt was only issued once upstream.
Prompt normalization
Prompt text uses Unicode NFKC, case folding, whitespace collapse and trimming for the exact-repeat signature.
Domain normalization
Citation URLs are parsed to hostnames and consolidated to registrable domains with the Public Suffix List after lowercasing and removing a leading www..
Public infrastructure exclusions
The parent-study infrastructure rules are applied. Six citation entries in this ChatGPT insurance slice matched public infrastructure exclusions and were removed from public source ranking.
Primary ranking metric
Response Citation Coverage equals:
eligible ChatGPT insurance responses citing domain / all eligible ChatGPT insurance responses
A domain counts no more than once per response.
Secondary metric
Raw visible citation events are retained as a secondary measure.
Vertical membership
Exact duplicates can preserve multiple source-vertical memberships when the same analytical observation appeared in overlapping exports.
Monthly persistence
Monthly Top 100 lists are generated with the same response-coverage ranking rule. Pairwise Jaccard similarity equals intersection divided by union.
Insurance-category lift
Insurance-category lift compares response coverage in this article with response coverage across all four high-stakes families inside ChatGPT.
It is a descriptive specialization ratio, not a quality or trust score.
Limitations
- The study covers three months.
- Vertical sample sizes differ substantially, and several ChatGPT vertical slices are relatively small.
- July is unavailable for Long-Term Care Insurance, Renters Insurance and Vision Insurance.
- The 12 labels are overlapping research categories, not statistically independent industries.
- Visible citations do not reveal all hidden retrieval or generation influences.
- Citation does not establish recommendation causality or endorsement.
- Domain aggregation can hide URL-level turnover.
- ChatGPT product behavior and citation rendering can change over time.
- The study does not publish a blanket first-party versus third-party share because relationship taxonomy is not complete.
- External studies use different prompts, geographies, metrics and collection contracts.

Commercial Relationship Disclosure
LLM Authority Index is part of a business ecosystem that provides AI visibility, research and marketing services. Affiliated businesses may have current or historical commercial relationships with companies or publishers that appear in the dataset.
Commercial relationships are not inputs to ranking methodology. Domains appear because they were observed as citations. No ranking is an endorsement, and no commercial relationship should be interpreted as the cause of visibility.
Dataset and Downloads
The publication package should include a downloadable Top 100 table with rank, registrable domain, response count, response coverage, citation events, insurance-vertical breadth, monthly rank, all-platform Insurance coverage, broad ChatGPT coverage and insurance-category lift inside ChatGPT.
The historical July-September 2026 table should remain versioned separately from future updates.
