LLM Authority Index Research | ChatGPT | Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending | July-September 2026
Reddit's direct citation visibility fell sharply in ChatGPT for high-stakes financial questions during the July-September 2026 research window.
Across the full three-month ChatGPT financial source slice, Reddit ranked #2 in July, #5 in August and #5 in September by response citation coverage. Full-panel coverage fell from 32.88% in July to 17.52% in August and 8.90% in September. Reddit still ranked #5 across the full three-month category because the early-quarter citation volume was so high.
The stricter parent-study endpoint shows an even clearer break. On the locked 13-vertical July-to-September financial panel, Reddit's citation-event share fell from 9.96% to 2.93%, a 70.6% relative decline, while response citation coverage fell from 32.88% to 9.07%, a 72.4% decline.
The matched-prompt test points in the same direction. In the locked Article 27 ChatGPT subset, 148 prompt-plus-surface scenarios could be paired between July and September. Reddit disappeared in 52 and newly appeared in only 5, a 10.4-to-1 loss-to-gain ratio. Matched response coverage fell from 37.84% to 6.08%.
Answer Capsule
Reddit citation visibility declined sharply in ChatGPT for high-stakes credit, debt, banking and lending questions from July to September 2026. In the locked balanced endpoint published in Article 27, Reddit's citation-event share fell 70.6%, from 9.96% to 2.93%, while response citation coverage fell 72.4%, from 32.88% to 9.07%. The strict matched ChatGPT panel contained 148 scenarios: Reddit remained cited in 4, disappeared in 52, newly appeared in 5, and was absent in 87. Matched coverage fell from 37.84% to 6.08%, and the exact two-sided McNemar p-value is approximately 6.40e-11.
Key Findings
- Reddit ranked #2 in ChatGPT financial citations in July, then #5 in August and September.
- In the full monthly ChatGPT panel, Reddit response coverage moved from 32.88% to 17.52% to 8.90%.
- The locked balanced 13-vertical endpoint shows Reddit citation-event share falling from 9.96% to 2.93%, a 70.6% decline.
- Locked balanced-panel response coverage fell from 32.88% to 9.07%, a 72.4% decline.
- The locked strict matched test contained 148 scenarios: 4 both, 52 losses, 5 gains and 87 neither.
- Matched response coverage fell 83.9%, from 37.84% to 6.08%.
- Reddit was 10.4 times more likely to disappear than to newly appear among discordant matched scenarios.
- The exact two-sided McNemar test gives p ≈ 6.40e-11, a strong directional imbalance in this matched sample.
- In the separate vertical-specific audit of the frozen corpus, all 13 balanced financial verticals had lower Reddit citation-event share in September than in July.
- The median vertical-level event-share decline in that audit was 75.9%; 12 of 13 verticals declined by at least 50%.
- The steepest measured vertical declines included Certificates of Deposits (-100%), Debt Relief & Consolidation (-100%), Credit Cards (-94.5%), Credit Repair (-89.7%) and Student Loans (-89.3%).
- Money Market Accounts had the mildest measured decline at -15.3%, showing that even a platform-wide break did not affect every financial topic equally.

Questions This Study Answers
- How much did Reddit citation visibility fall in ChatGPT for high-stakes financial decisions from July to September 2026?
- Does the decline remain when the same prompt and ChatGPT surface are paired?
- Was the drop broad across financial verticals, or concentrated in only a few topics?
Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions
Article 45 isolates one source, Reddit, inside one platform, ChatGPT, and one commercial decision family, Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending. That narrow scope makes it useful for daily AI search marketing because it separates three measurements that are often blended into one visibility score:
- Where does Reddit rank?
- How often is Reddit actually cited?
- Is its citation visibility changing on the same prompts over time?
In this ChatGPT financial panel:
- Reddit ranked #2 in July, then #5 in August and September;
- full-panel response citation coverage fell from 32.88% to 17.52% to 8.90%;
- on the locked balanced 13-vertical July-to-September panel, Reddit citation-event share fell from 9.96% to 2.93%, a 70.6% decline;
- balanced-panel response citation coverage fell from 32.88% to 9.07%, a 72.4% decline;
- in the strict matched set, 52 scenarios lost Reddit while 5 gained it, a 10.4-to-1 loss-to-gain ratio;
- matched response coverage fell from 37.84% to 6.08%, an 83.9% decline; and
- the exact two-sided McNemar test is approximately p = 6.40e-11.
This is not a rank-only story. Reddit lost three rank positions between July and August, but its response coverage also fell by more than 70% on the locked endpoint and by more than 80% on the matched panel.
The platform contrast is equally important. The same parent financial study reports:
- Google AI Overviews balanced Reddit citation-event share: -25.5%
- Google AI Mode: -37.6%
- ChatGPT: -70.6%
- Perplexity: -77.2%
That spread is too wide to treat "Reddit visibility in AI" as a single transferable metric.
Article 45 should also be read inside the broader Credit source ecosystem. The Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending Citation Authority Study reports 77.0% median monthly Top 100 persistence, 44.9% median cross-platform Top 100 portability, and an approximate 32.1 percentage-point Persistence-Portability Gap. Those metrics describe the broader source portfolio. They should not be calculated from Reddit's ChatGPT-specific decline.
The underlying ChatGPT financial source study still ranks Reddit #5 across the three-month aggregate at 19.6% response coverage. That illustrates another important measurement distinction: a source can remain a major aggregate authority while losing substantial current-month reach.
Citation visibility should remain separate from brand mentions, recommendation rate, ranking, sentiment, citation-recommendation coupling and downstream business outcomes. A Reddit citation can support an answer without causing ChatGPT to recommend a particular lender, bank, card issuer, tax-relief firm or credit-repair company.
Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings
| Research finding | What publishers can responsibly say | What brands and CMOs can reasonably do |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit moved from #2 to #5 while full-panel response coverage fell from 32.88% to 8.90% | "Reddit lost both rank and citation reach in this ChatGPT financial panel." | Track rank, coverage and citation-event share separately. |
| Balanced Reddit citation-event share fell 70.6% and response coverage fell 72.4% | "Reddit direct citation visibility weakened sharply on a like-for-like ChatGPT financial panel." | Maintain a fixed ChatGPT prompt panel and monitor source coverage month by month. |
| The strict matched set produced 52 losses versus 5 gains | "The decline remained when prompt and ChatGPT surface were held constant." | Add matched-prompt loss/gain reporting to AI visibility dashboards. |
| Exact McNemar p is about 6.40e-11 | "The matched loss/gain imbalance is strongly detectable in this sample." | Treat the result as evidence of directional change, not proof of cause. |
| All 13 balanced verticals lost Reddit event share | "The decline was broad across the measured financial family." | Segment by product line, but do not dismiss the category-wide signal. |
| The median vertical event-share decline was 75.9% | "Most verticals experienced large declines, not just a few outliers." | Reevaluate Reddit-dependent source strategies across multiple financial prompt clusters. |
| Money Market Accounts declined only 15.3% | "The aggregate break was not uniform." | Identify resilient subcategories before reallocating effort. |
| ChatGPT declined much faster than Google's AI surfaces | "Reddit citation behavior is platform-specific." | Maintain separate earned-source strategies for ChatGPT, Google, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. |
| The broader Credit source market has 77.0% persistence while Reddit declined sharply inside ChatGPT | "A durable category source ecosystem can still contain volatile individual sources." | Separate source-specific drift from category-level persistence and portability. |
| Citation visibility is not recommendation causality | "Reddit remains measurable in the source layer." | Measure citations, mentions, recommendations, rank, sentiment and conversion outcomes separately. |
The practical operating model is therefore:
- Track ChatGPT separately from Google, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot.
- Track Reddit rank, response coverage and citation-event share as different metrics.
- Use a locked prompt panel to identify real source losses and gains.
- Segment financial source strategy by vertical instead of relying only on one aggregate Reddit number.
- Pair Reddit monitoring with the broader publisher source map rather than treating Reddit as a standalone AI optimization strategy.

How This Study Fits the High-Stakes Consumer Decisions Research Corpus
Article 45 is the ChatGPT x Reddit x Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending intersection study.
Its two direct parents are:
- Reddit's Decline in AI Citations for Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending, which provides the cross-platform category trend; and
- The 100 Most-Cited Websites in ChatGPT for Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending, which provides the underlying ChatGPT source market.
It should also be read with:
- the 2026 AI Citation Authority Study;
- the overall Reddit citation decline study;
- the Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending Citation Authority Study;
- the Persistence-Portability Gap;
- Do AI Platforms Cite the Same Websites?; and
- How Stable Are AI Citations?.
The sibling Reddit studies for this category isolate Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot. Together, the six platform children show why one blended Reddit metric can obscure materially different source behavior.
What We Studied
This article is the ChatGPT platform-specific extension of the broader Reddit decline study for Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending.
The underlying ChatGPT financial source study contains:
| Measure | Count |
|---|---|
| Raw ChatGPT observations associated with the family | 2,327 |
| Explicit extraction failures | 1 |
| Raw citation-array entries before exact-repeat handling | 10,658 |
| Deduplicated ChatGPT financial responses | 2,053 |
| Visible citation events after the published infrastructure exclusions | 9,415 |
| Registrable cited domains | 748 |
| Domain-response appearances | 8,158 |
| Financial source verticals | 16 |
| Months | 3 |
The 16 source vertical labels are:
- Auto Refinance Loans
- Bad Credit Loans
- Best Banks
- Certificates of Deposits
- Credit Cards
- Credit Cards for Building Credit
- Credit Monitoring
- Credit Repair
- Debt Relief & Consolidation
- Home Equity Loans
- Money Market Accounts
- Personal Loans and Online Lenders
- Savings Account
- Student Loan Refinance
- Student Loans
- Tax Relief
The strict July-to-September endpoint uses 13 verticals. Home Equity Loans, Savings Account and Student Loan Refinance are omitted because July source datasets were not present in the frozen archive.

The Core Finding: Reddit Lost More Than 70% of Its Locked ChatGPT Financial Citation Visibility
Questions This Section Answers
- Could the three September-only financial verticals explain the decline?
- Did Reddit lose both event share and response coverage?
- Was the movement large enough to change how ChatGPT source visibility should be managed?
The locked Article 27 endpoint controls the category universe by comparing only the 13 financial source verticals represented in both July and September.
| Metric | July 2026 | September 2026 | Relative change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reddit share of citation events | 9.96% | 2.93% | -70.6% |
| Reddit response citation coverage | 32.88% | 9.07% | -72.4% |
Both metrics move sharply lower. This is not simply a change in citation density. Reddit appeared in a much smaller share of eligible ChatGPT responses and represented a much smaller share of visible citation events.
The exact platform-level endpoint percentages are inherited from Article 27 so this child study remains numerically consistent with the published parent trend analysis. A fresh corpus-level vertical audit is reported separately below and is not used to redefine those locked parent denominators.
Commercially, the change is large. In July, roughly one in three eligible ChatGPT financial responses cited Reddit in the locked balanced panel. By September, that figure was roughly one in eleven.
Reddit Fell Month by Month in the Full ChatGPT Financial Panel
Questions This Section Answers
- Was September an isolated break or part of a three-month decline?
- How quickly did Reddit move from the #2 source to the #5 source?
- Does the descriptive full panel tell the same directional story as the locked balanced endpoint?
The response-level full panel shows a continuous decline:
| Month | ChatGPT financial responses | Responses citing Reddit | Reddit response coverage | Reddit rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| July 2026 | 660 | 217 | 32.88% | #2 |
| August 2026 | 719 | 126 | 17.52% | #5 |
| September 2026 | 674 | 60 | 8.90% | #5 |
Reddit's response coverage was nearly cut in half between July and August, then nearly cut in half again between August and September.
The rank change is also notable. Reddit was the #2 cited domain in July, behind only Forbes in the monthly ChatGPT financial source map. By August it had fallen to #5, and it remained #5 in September.
The full monthly panel includes all available source verticals in each month, so it is descriptive rather than the strict endpoint test. The locked 13-vertical endpoint is the preferred July-to-September comparison.

The Strict Matched-Prompt Test Shows More Than Ten Losses for Every Gain
Questions This Section Answers
- Did Reddit decline when prompt wording and raw ChatGPT surface were held constant?
- How many matched scenarios lost Reddit compared with how many gained it?
- Is the loss-gain imbalance statistically meaningful inside this sample?
The locked parent study pairs the same normalized prompt on the same raw ChatGPT surface when there is exactly one eligible July observation and one eligible September observation under the parent matching contract.
That produces 148 matched ChatGPT scenarios:
| July Reddit citation | September Reddit citation | Matched scenarios |
|---|---|---|
| Yes | Yes | 4 |
| Yes | No | 52 |
| No | Yes | 5 |
| No | No | 87 |
| Total | 148 |
Reddit disappeared in 52 scenarios and newly appeared in only 5. Among discordant pairs, a Reddit loss was 10.4 times more common than a gain.
Matched response coverage fell from 37.84% to 6.08%, an 83.9% relative decline.
The exact two-sided McNemar p-value is approximately 6.40e-11. Statistical significance does not identify the cause, but the paired imbalance is far too directional to describe as a roughly symmetric exchange of wins and losses in this sample.
The Vertical Audit Shows a Broad and Deep ChatGPT Decline
Questions This Section Answers
- Did the decline appear across most financial verticals?
- Which topics lost the most Reddit event share?
- Were any verticals materially more resilient?
The separate source-vertical audit is calculated directly from the frozen corpus using exact-repeat handling inside each named vertical. It is intentionally reported separately from the locked Article 27 endpoint and matched panel.
All 13 of 13 balanced financial verticals had lower Reddit citation-event share in September than in July. All 13 also had lower response citation coverage.
| Financial vertical | July Reddit event share | September Reddit event share | Event-share change | July response coverage | September response coverage | Coverage change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Auto Refinance Loans | 7.37% | 3.00% | -59.2% | 31.03% | 11.32% | -63.5% |
| Bad Credit Loans | 7.78% | 3.14% | -59.7% | 43.18% | 9.41% | -78.2% |
| Best Banks | 4.79% | 2.31% | -51.8% | 13.51% | 7.14% | -47.1% |
| Certificates of Deposits | 8.16% | 0.00% | -100.0% | 38.10% | 0.00% | -100.0% |
| Credit Cards | 17.18% | 0.94% | -94.5% | 42.70% | 2.78% | -93.5% |
| Credit Cards for Building Credit | 13.76% | 1.79% | -87.0% | 42.86% | 5.88% | -86.3% |
| Credit Monitoring | 13.92% | 3.35% | -75.9% | 40.82% | 11.67% | -71.4% |
| Credit Repair | 15.46% | 1.59% | -89.7% | 65.00% | 5.26% | -91.9% |
| Debt Relief & Consolidation | 11.11% | 0.00% | -100.0% | 50.00% | 0.00% | -100.0% |
| Money Market Accounts | 6.63% | 5.62% | -15.3% | 19.32% | 15.56% | -19.5% |
| Personal Loans and Online Lenders | 5.46% | 2.27% | -58.4% | 26.83% | 7.69% | -71.3% |
| Student Loans | 5.44% | 0.58% | -89.3% | 22.03% | 1.75% | -92.0% |
| Tax Relief | 38.46% | 14.29% | -62.9% | 50.00% | 20.00% | -60.0% |
The median vertical-level event-share decline was 75.9%. Twelve of 13 verticals declined by at least 50%, and seven declined by at least 75%.
The steepest measured declines were Certificates of Deposits (-100%), Debt Relief & Consolidation (-100%), Credit Cards (-94.5%), Credit Repair (-89.7%), Student Loans (-89.3%) and Credit Cards for Building Credit (-87.0%).
Money Market Accounts was the clear outlier on the resilient side. Its Reddit event share fell only 15.3%, from 6.63% to 5.62%, and response coverage fell from 19.32% to 15.56%.
Small-sample caution is especially important for Debt Relief & Consolidation and Tax Relief. The direction is informative, but the percentages in those rows should not be treated as stable population parameters.

ChatGPT's Reddit Decline Was Much Steeper Than Google's
The parent financial Reddit study shows that the direct Reddit citation trend was highly platform-specific.
| AI platform | July Reddit event share | September Reddit event share | Relative change | July response coverage | September response coverage | Coverage change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | 3.87% | 2.88% | -25.5% | 15.27% | 10.64% | -30.3% |
| Google AI Mode | 3.89% | 2.43% | -37.6% | 19.35% | 14.32% | -26.0% |
| ChatGPT | 9.96% | 2.93% | -70.6% | 32.88% | 9.07% | -72.4% |
| Perplexity | 4.46% | 1.02% | -77.2% | 9.96% | 1.51% | -84.9% |
| Gemini | 1.41% | 0.88% | -37.6% | 2.03% | 1.26% | -37.9% |
| Microsoft Copilot | 0.00% | 0.00% | N/A | 0.00% | 0.00% | N/A |
ChatGPT's decline was far steeper than the declines measured in Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. Perplexity declined even more sharply on a relative basis, but it started from a much smaller Reddit baseline.
The matched tests tell the same story. ChatGPT produced 52 losses vs. 5 gains, compared with 40 vs. 23 in Google AI Overviews and 50 vs. 16 in Google AI Mode.
For marketers, this is the central strategic point: Reddit citation visibility cannot be managed as one cross-platform KPI. A Reddit program could retain direct citation value in Google's AI surfaces while delivering far less direct citation reach in ChatGPT than it did earlier in the quarter.
What This Means for Financial Brands and CMOs
For financial brands, the ChatGPT result is large enough to justify a platform-specific change in measurement, not necessarily an abandonment of Reddit. Five actions follow from the data:
- Separate ChatGPT Reddit visibility from Google Reddit visibility. The source trend moved very differently by platform.
- Use fixed matched prompts for drift monitoring. The 52-to-5 loss-gain imbalance is visible only when the same scenarios are compared over time.
- Diversify third-party authority sources. Reddit remained useful, but the direct citation pathway proved volatile.
- Segment by financial product line. Money Market Accounts was much more resilient than Credit Cards, Credit Repair and Student Loans.
- Track citation visibility and recommendation visibility separately. A Reddit citation can disappear without a brand mention disappearing, and a Reddit citation does not prove it caused a recommendation.
The result does not show that Reddit stopped mattering to ChatGPT. It shows that direct visible Reddit citation coverage became dramatically less dependable in this high-stakes financial panel during the quarter.

What This Means for Financial Publishers
For financial publishers, a sharp reduction in one major community source can create openings, but the data does not support a simple one-for-one replacement story.
The useful commercial questions are:
- Which publisher domains entered ChatGPT answers where Reddit had previously appeared?
- Which gains persisted across multiple months and product lines?
- Did visibility grow in ChatGPT specifically, or across Google and Perplexity as well?
- Are first-party institutions, government sources and specialist comparison sites gaining alongside traditional publishers?
A publisher should sell measured category-specific citation visibility, not the claim that ChatGPT "trusts" the publisher or that a citation caused a recommendation.
How This Study Relates to Prior Reddit Citation Research
The parent LLMAI financial study found a broader cross-platform decline
The parent Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending Reddit study found that Reddit's balanced citation-event share fell 46.2% across the six-platform financial family, while balanced response citation coverage fell 44.7%.
The ChatGPT child result is materially steeper: 70.6% lower event share and 72.4% lower response coverage on the locked balanced ChatGPT panel.
That difference is part of the result, not a conflict. The parent blends multiple platform families; Article 45 isolates one platform.
PromptWatch independently documented an even sharper short-window ChatGPT break
PromptWatch reported that Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations averaged about 3.83% from July 18 through August 7, 2026, then fell to about 0.52% by August 14 to 17, an 86.4% relative decline. PromptWatch: Why Did ChatGPT Stop Citing Reddit?
PromptWatch also observed a major change in ChatGPT Search query fanout around August 8, including a jump in site-restricted searches. That is a plausible retrieval-behavior mechanism in PromptWatch's analysis, but it does not prove why Reddit declined in the LLMAI financial panel.
The percentages should not be merged. PromptWatch uses a different query universe, time window, product surface and citation denominator.
Search Engine Journal cautioned against causal overreach
Search Engine Journal reviewed the same PromptWatch data and emphasized that timing alone does not establish the cause of the Reddit decline. Search Engine Journal: Why Reddit's ChatGPT Citation Drop Isn't Fully Explained
Article 45 follows the same rule. It measures source change and does not attribute the decline to an unverified ranking policy, licensing event, data relationship or retrieval-system cause.
Ahrefs still ranks Reddit first in broad September ChatGPT queries
Ahrefs' September 2026 ChatGPT study uses a broad U.S. all-topic query population. Under its mention-share methodology, Reddit ranks #1 at 16.8%, followed by Wikipedia at 7.0%, Consumer Reports at 3.7%, Forbes at 3.1%, and EngineerFix at 2.8%. Ahrefs: The 50 Most-Cited Websites in ChatGPT
That broad prominence can coexist with the decline measured here. Article 45 is a fixed high-stakes financial panel, not an all-topic source leaderboard. Reddit can remain a major broad ChatGPT source while losing substantial direct citation visibility in one commercial decision family.
Tinuiti shows that social-source behavior is not one-domain or one-category behavior
Tinuiti's Q3 2026 AI Citation Trends Report tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot across several commercial categories. It reports that most tracked platforms are at or near Q3 highs in overall social citation share, with Perplexity as a notable exception. Tinuiti Q3 2026 AI Citation Trends Report
That finding does not contradict Article 45. Tinuiti measures broader social-source behavior across a different category set, while Article 45 isolates Reddit inside high-stakes financial decisions. The distinction between one domain and the wider social-source class matters.
Studies can disagree because of:
- query universe
- commercial intent
- platform surface
- time window
- citation-event versus response-level denominator
- prompt weighting
- source normalization
- domain and infrastructure handling
- whether results are broad all-topic observations or narrow category panels
The correct question is not which percentage is universally right. It is which measurement contract matches the decision a brand or publisher is trying to make.

How This Study Is Different
This study narrows the broader Reddit research to one platform, one commercial family and a fixed three-month window.
It combines:
- a 2,053-response ChatGPT financial source slice;
- a locked balanced 13-vertical July-to-September endpoint;
- a 148-scenario locked matched prompt-plus-surface test;
- both citation-event share and response citation coverage;
- a fresh vertical-specific audit from the frozen corpus;
- a cross-platform comparison drawn from the parent financial study.
The question is narrow and commercial: how stable was Reddit as a directly cited ChatGPT source for consequential financial consumer decisions during this quarter?
Why AI Citation Studies Can Disagree
Two well-executed studies can report different Reddit trends without either one necessarily being wrong.
Query population
Consumer finance is not representative of the entire web. Reddit's source role can differ substantially in software, entertainment, travel, local services or troubleshooting.
Platform surface
ChatGPT can expose different source behavior from Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity or Microsoft Copilot.
Denominator
This article reports both Reddit's share of citation events and the share of eligible responses that cite Reddit. Those are different measurements.
Time window
A short August disruption and a July-to-September endpoint comparison answer different questions.
Prompt weighting
This study does not weight prompts by search volume, media spend, revenue or estimated conversion value.
Deduplication and source membership
The archive contains overlapping source datasets. Exact-repeat anti-double-counting can change denominators when the same captured response appears in more than one export.
Domain and infrastructure handling
Domains are consolidated at the registrable-domain level, and obvious technical infrastructure is excluded from public publisher analysis.
The useful conclusion is not that one universal Reddit citation percentage exists. Citation visibility is conditional on platform, query set, category, collection method and time period.
Verticals Covered
The full ChatGPT financial source study covers 16 source vertical labels. The balanced endpoint trend covers the following 13:
- Auto Refinance Loans
- Bad Credit Loans
- Best Banks
- Certificates of Deposits
- Credit Cards
- Credit Cards for Building Credit
- Credit Monitoring
- Credit Repair
- Debt Relief & Consolidation
- Money Market Accounts
- Personal Loans and Online Lenders
- Student Loans
- Tax Relief
The three September verticals without July source datasets are Home Equity Loans, Savings Account and Student Loan Refinance.

Methodology
Source archive
This study uses the frozen July-September 2026 LLM Authority Index archive underlying the 2026 AI Citation Authority Study, the ChatGPT financial citation-source study, and the parent financial Reddit decline study.
Eligibility
A record is eligible for the platform-category source universe when it is:
- in July, August or September 2026;
- assigned to the ChatGPT public platform family;
- associated with the Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending family; and
- not explicitly marked as an extraction failure.
Exact-repeat anti-double-counting
An observation is treated as an exact analytical repeat when all of the following match:
- report month;
- exact raw platform/source surface;
- normalized prompt text; and
- exact set of original citation URLs.
One analytical instance is retained while source-dataset memberships are preserved for vertical analysis.
Prompt normalization
Prompt text is normalized with Unicode NFKC normalization, case folding, whitespace collapse and trimming.
Reddit identification
Citation URLs are consolidated to registrable domains using Public Suffix List logic. Reddit is identified as reddit.com.
Citation-event share
Reddit citation-event share = Reddit citation events / all eligible citation events
A response can contribute more than one Reddit event if multiple eligible Reddit URLs appear.
Response citation coverage
Reddit response citation coverage = responses citing Reddit / all eligible responses
Reddit counts no more than once per response for this metric.
Balanced endpoint panel
The like-for-like endpoint uses the 13 source verticals represented in both July and September. Home Equity Loans, Savings Account and Student Loan Refinance are excluded because July datasets were not present.
The platform-level endpoint percentages and matched-pair counts in this article preserve the locked ChatGPT split published in Article 27. This avoids silently changing the published parent series when a fresh reconstruction applies a slightly different analytical key or infrastructure screen.
Strict matched prompt-plus-surface test
The locked Article 27 ChatGPT matched set contains 148 scenarios:
- both July and September cited Reddit: 4;
- July cited Reddit, September did not: 52;
- July did not cite Reddit, September did: 5;
- neither month cited Reddit: 87.
McNemar test
The exact two-sided McNemar calculation uses the discordant pairs 52 and 5. The exact p-value is approximately 6.40e-11.
Vertical audit
The vertical table in this child study is recalculated directly from the frozen corpus at the source-vertical level using exact-repeat handling inside each named vertical. It is reported separately from the locked parent endpoint and matched panel rather than being used to redefine those parent denominators.
Public infrastructure exclusions
The published ChatGPT financial source study excluded 27 obvious technical or infrastructure citation entries from the public source ranking. The child study follows the same principle: technical wrappers are not treated as publishers.
No causal interpretation
Observed citation changes do not establish why ChatGPT changed a source set. They also do not prove that a citation caused a brand mention, recommendation, ranking, conversion or consumer decision.

Limitations
- The study covers a defined commercial financial prompt panel, not all ChatGPT queries.
- The three-month window can identify direction but cannot establish a permanent source-policy change.
- ChatGPT retrieval, search, model and interface behavior can change during the study period.
- Source visibility is not source quality, trust or endorsement.
- The balanced endpoint excludes three financial verticals that had no July dataset in the frozen archive.
- The locked endpoint and matched panel are inherited from Article 27 for cross-article numerical consistency; the separate vertical audit is a fresh corpus-level breakdown and should not be used to redefine the parent denominators.
- Some verticals, especially Tax Relief and Debt Relief & Consolidation, have small counts and can produce unstable percentage changes.
- The paired test controls prompt wording and raw surface but cannot control undocumented upstream product changes.
- Statistical significance does not identify the cause of the citation change or guarantee that the same direction will continue.
