LLM Authority Index Research | Google AI Mode | Insurance | July-September 2026
Reddit remained a major citation source in Google AI Mode for high-stakes insurance questions throughout the July-September 2026 research window, but its direct citation visibility moved lower across the quarter.
Across the full three-month Google AI Mode insurance slice, Reddit ranked #4 in July, #5 in August and #6 in September by response citation coverage. Full-panel response coverage fell from 15.45% in July to 14.25% in August and 13.12% in September. Reddit event share also declined each month, from 3.18% to 2.73% to 2.27%.
The stricter like-for-like endpoint from the parent insurance Reddit study shows the same direction. In the nine insurance verticals represented in both July and September, Reddit's citation-event share fell from 3.18% to 2.13%, a 33.1% relative decline, while response citation coverage fell from 15.47% to 12.43%, a 19.6% decline.
The matched test is directionally consistent but less extreme than ChatGPT. In the locked Article 28 Google AI Mode subset, 380 prompt-plus-surface scenarios were paired between July and September. Reddit disappeared in 38 and newly appeared in 21, a 1.81-to-1 loss-to-gain ratio. Matched response coverage fell from 22.37% to 17.89%.
Answer Capsule
Reddit citation visibility declined in Google AI Mode for high-stakes insurance questions from July to September 2026, but the decline was substantially milder than the one observed in ChatGPT. On the balanced nine-vertical endpoint, Reddit's citation-event share fell 33.1%, from 3.18% to 2.13%, while response citation coverage fell 19.6%, from 15.47% to 12.43%. The locked matched panel contained 380 scenarios: Reddit remained cited in 47, disappeared in 38, newly appeared in 21, and was absent in 274. Matched coverage fell from 22.37% to 17.89%, and the exact two-sided McNemar p-value is approximately 0.0363.

Questions This Study Answers
- How much did Reddit citation visibility change in Google AI Mode for insurance decisions from July to September 2026?
- Does the decline remain when the same prompt and Google AI Mode surface are paired?
- Was the movement consistent across insurance verticals, or did some topics move differently?
Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions
This article isolates one source, Reddit, inside one surface, Google AI Mode, and one commercial decision family, Insurance. That narrow design makes the study useful for day-to-day AI search marketing because it separates measurements that are often collapsed into one visibility score:
- Where does Reddit rank inside the Google AI Mode insurance source market?
- How often is Reddit actually cited, measured both as citation-event share and response citation coverage?
- Does the same prompt-plus-surface scenario keep or lose Reddit over time?
In the three-month Google AI Mode insurance source study, Reddit still ranked #5 overall at 14.2% response citation coverage. That aggregate position can coexist with meaningful current-month deterioration: Reddit ranked #4 in July, #5 in August and #6 in September, while full-panel response coverage fell from 15.45% to 14.25% to 13.12% and citation-event share fell from 3.18% to 2.73% to 2.27%.
The stricter balanced endpoint points in the same direction. Reddit citation-event share fell 33.1%, from 3.18% to 2.13%, while response citation coverage fell 19.6%, from 15.47% to 12.43%. In the locked matched set, 38 scenarios lost Reddit while 21 gained it, a 1.81-to-1 loss-to-gain ratio, and matched coverage fell from 22.37% to 17.89%.
For publishers, that means a three-month aggregate rank should not be sold as proof that current visibility is stable. For brands and CMOs, it means source strategy should be monitored with a fixed prompt panel, a defined platform surface, and separate rank, coverage, event-share, and matched-loss metrics.
The vertical audit strengthens that operating case. Eight of nine comparable insurance verticals lost Reddit citation-event share, while seven of nine lost response coverage. Medicare Supplement moved higher on both measures despite only four Reddit events in each endpoint month, and Travel Insurance lost event share while gaining response coverage. Those exceptions show why teams should not use a single category percentage or a single citation metric to allocate budget.
The platform comparison is equally important. The locked parent insurance study reports Reddit citation-event share changes of -69.1% in ChatGPT, -33.1% in Google AI Overviews, -33.1% in Google AI Mode, -56.1% in Gemini, -100.0% in Perplexity, and no measurable Reddit event share in Microsoft Copilot at either endpoint. Google AI Mode therefore moved in the same direction as Google AI Overviews on event share, but its response-coverage decline was smaller, -19.6% versus -28.9%.
This result also belongs inside the broader Insurance Citation Authority Study. That study reports 80.2% median monthly Top 100 persistence, 29.0% median cross-platform Top 100 portability, and an approximate 51.2 percentage-point Persistence-Portability Gap. The Google AI Mode insurance source study itself reports 81 domains remaining in its Top 100 across all three months and 75.4% median monthly Top 100 Jaccard similarity. Those are source-market persistence measures, not Reddit-specific stability measures.
The Persistence-Portability Gap framework therefore helps interpret Article 47 correctly: a platform-category source market can remain relatively persistent while an individual source loses citation share and rank, and the broader source set can still fragment sharply across platforms. Article 47 should not create a separate platform-category gap by subtracting AI Mode's 75.4% monthly persistence from a single pairwise platform overlap because those measurements use different comparison structures.
Citation visibility should remain separate from brand mentions, recommendation rate, rank, sentiment, citation-recommendation coupling, and downstream business outcomes. This study measures the visible source layer. It does not establish that a Reddit citation caused an insurer, broker, publisher, or product recommendation.
Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings
| Research finding | What publishers can responsibly do or say | What brands and CMOs can reasonably do |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit ranked #5 across the three-month AI Mode insurance source study, but monthly rank moved #4 to #5 to #6 and September coverage fell to 13.12% | "Reddit remained a major aggregate AI Mode source, but its current-month reach weakened." | Report aggregate authority and current-month visibility separately. |
| Balanced Reddit event share fell 33.1% while response coverage fell 19.6% | "Both metrics declined, but not at the same rate." | Keep citation-event share and response coverage separate in dashboards and planning. |
| The locked matched set produced 38 losses versus 21 gains | "The decline remains when prompt and surface are held constant." | Add matched loss/gain reporting instead of relying only on rank or share-of-voice snapshots. |
| Exact McNemar p is about 0.0363 | "The loss/gain imbalance is detectable in this matched sample." | Treat the result as evidence of directional change, not proof of cause or permanence. |
| Eight of nine comparable verticals lost event share, while seven of nine lost response coverage | "The category trend was broad but not uniform across metrics." | Allocate research, PR, content and publisher outreach by insurance product and prompt cluster. |
| Reddit-loss scenarios redistributed across Forbes, Money.com, The Wall Street Journal and many other domains | "No single publisher inherited Reddit's lost visibility." | Build a diversified third-party source portfolio rather than substituting one target for Reddit. |
| AI Mode and AI Overviews had the same 33.1% event-share decline but different response-coverage declines | "Even closely related Google surfaces should not be treated as one source market." | Track AI Mode and AI Overviews separately when evaluating earned-source performance. |
| The broader insurance source market shows 80.2% persistence but only 29.0% portability | "A durable category source market can still contain volatile individual sources and fragmented platform lists." | Separate source-specific drift, category persistence and cross-platform portability in planning. |
| Citation visibility is not recommendation causality | "This study measures the source layer, not endorsement." | Track citations, mentions, recommendations, rank, sentiment and conversion outcomes as separate variables. |

Where Article 47 Fits in the High-Stakes Consumer Decisions Corpus
This article is a child analysis of two parent studies:
- the Insurance Reddit decline study, which provides the locked cross-platform insurance endpoint and matched counts; and
- the Google AI Mode Insurance source study, which provides the three-month Google AI Mode source market, including Reddit's #5 aggregate rank and 14.2% response coverage.
The platform-level context comes from the overall Google AI Mode Top 100 study. The broader interpretation comes from the 2026 AI Citation Authority Study, the overall Reddit decline study, the cross-platform citation-overlap study, the citation-drift study, and the Persistence-Portability Gap framework. Those studies answer different questions: source-specific decline, platform portability, prompt-level drift, and market-level persistence should not be treated as interchangeable measurements.
What We Studied
This article is the Google AI Mode platform-specific extension of the broader Reddit decline study for high-stakes insurance consumer decisions.
The underlying Google AI Mode insurance source study contains:
| Measure | Count |
|---|---|
| Raw Google AI Mode insurance observations | 4,089 |
| Explicit extraction failures | 0 |
| Deduplicated Google AI Mode insurance responses | 3,966 |
| Visible citation events after public filtering | 30,280 |
| Registrable cited domains | 2,245 |
| Domain-response appearances | 23,703 |
| Insurance source verticals | 12 |
| Months | 3 |
The 12 source vertical labels are:
- Car Insurance
- Dental insurance
- Disability Insurance
- Health Insurance
- Life Insurance Companies
- Long-Term Care Insurance
- Medicare Supplement Insurance
- Pet Insurance
- Renters Insurance
- Short Term Health Insurance
- Travel Insurance
- Vision Insurance
The strict July-to-September endpoint uses nine verticals. Long-Term Care Insurance, Renters Insurance and Vision Insurance are excluded because July source datasets were not present in the frozen archive.

The Core Finding: Reddit Declined on a Like-for-Like Google AI Mode Insurance Panel
Questions This Section Answers
- Could the three September-only insurance verticals explain the decline?
- Did Reddit lose both event share and response coverage?
- How large was the decline after the category set was held constant?
The decline remains after restricting the endpoint comparison to the nine insurance verticals represented in both July and September.
| Metric | July 2026 | September 2026 | Relative change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reddit share of citation events | 3.18% | 2.13% | -33.1% |
| Reddit response citation coverage | 15.47% | 12.43% | -19.6% |
Both measures moved lower, but the response-level decline was materially smaller than the event-share decline. Reddit still appeared in roughly one out of eight eligible September Google AI Mode insurance responses in the balanced panel.
These endpoint percentages are preserved from Article 28 so this child study remains numerically consistent with the published parent insurance trend analysis. The direct record-level reconstruction from the frozen corpus produces the same matched counts and essentially the same endpoint values.
Commercially, this is a meaningful loss of direct citation share, not a disappearance. Reddit remained prominent in Google AI Mode even while its relative position weakened.
Reddit Fell Across the Full Three-Month Google AI Mode Insurance Panel
Questions This Section Answers
- Was September an isolated break or part of a three-month pattern?
- Did Reddit lose rank as coverage declined?
- Does the descriptive full panel tell the same directional story as the balanced endpoint?
The full monthly panel also trends lower:
| Month | AI Mode insurance responses | Reddit citation events | Reddit event share | Responses citing Reddit | Reddit response coverage | Reddit rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| July 2026 | 1,243 | 299 | 3.18% | 192 | 15.45% | #4 |
| August 2026 | 1,404 | 285 | 2.73% | 200 | 14.25% | #5 |
| September 2026 | 1,319 | 237 | 2.27% | 173 | 13.12% | #6 |
Reddit's event share fell each month, from 3.18% to 2.73% to 2.27%, while response coverage fell from 15.45% to 14.25% to 13.12%.
Its monthly rank moved from #4 to #5 to #6. The movement was gradual rather than a single abrupt break, which is consistent with broader third-party observations that Google's Reddit citation changes were slower than the sharp August ChatGPT shift.
The full September panel includes three insurance verticals without July data, so the locked nine-vertical endpoint remains the preferred July-to-September comparison.

The Strict Matched-Prompt Test Shows More Losses Than Gains
Questions This Section Answers
- Did Reddit decline when prompt wording and raw Google AI Mode surface were held constant?
- How many matched scenarios lost Reddit compared with gains?
- Was the directional imbalance statistically meaningful inside this sample?
The locked Article 28 Google AI Mode matched panel contains 380 scenarios:
| July Reddit citation | September Reddit citation | Matched scenarios |
|---|---|---|
| Yes | Yes | 47 |
| Yes | No | 38 |
| No | Yes | 21 |
| No | No | 274 |
| Total | 380 |
Reddit losses outnumbered gains 38 to 21, a 1.81-to-1 imbalance.
Matched Reddit response coverage fell from 22.37% to 17.89%, a 20.0% relative decline.
The exact two-sided McNemar test gives p ≈ 0.0363. Within this matched sample, the loss-gain imbalance is inconsistent with a simple 50/50 turnover process at the conventional 0.05 threshold. The test does not identify the cause of the change.
The Platform-Specific Vertical Audit Shows Broad but Uneven Decline
Questions This Section Answers
- Did every insurance vertical decline inside Google AI Mode?
- Which insurance topics had the largest Reddit losses?
- Which topics moved against the category-wide trend?
Eight of the nine comparable insurance verticals had lower Reddit event share in September than in July. Seven of nine had lower response coverage.
| Insurance vertical | July event share | September event share | Event-share change | July response coverage | September response coverage | Coverage change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Car Insurance | 1.80% | 1.25% | -30.2% | 10.74% | 3.39% | -68.4% |
| Dental insurance | 1.39% | 0.86% | -38.2% | 10.94% | 5.38% | -50.8% |
| Disability Insurance | 3.84% | 3.12% | -18.8% | 17.72% | 16.07% | -9.3% |
| Health Insurance | 2.99% | 1.25% | -58.0% | 16.77% | 10.74% | -36.0% |
| Life Insurance Companies | 2.27% | 1.35% | -40.3% | 7.96% | 5.83% | -26.9% |
| Medicare Supplement Insurance | 0.47% | 0.51% | +8.9% | 3.77% | 6.06% | +60.6% |
| Pet Insurance | 7.71% | 5.02% | -34.9% | 36.60% | 28.27% | -22.7% |
| Short Term Health Insurance | 1.38% | 0.89% | -35.5% | 3.96% | 2.99% | -24.6% |
| Travel Insurance | 2.22% | 2.11% | -4.8% | 16.41% | 18.32% | +11.7% |
The median event-share change across the nine verticals was -34.9%, and the median response-coverage change was -24.6%.
The steepest event-share declines were:
- Health Insurance: 2.99% to 1.25%, down 58.0%.
- Life Insurance Companies: 2.27% to 1.35%, down 40.3%.
- Dental insurance: 1.39% to 0.86%, down 38.2%.
- Short Term Health Insurance: 1.38% to 0.89%, down 35.5%.
- Pet Insurance: 7.71% to 5.02%, down 34.9%.
Two cases deserve caution:
- Medicare Supplement Insurance increased from 0.47% to 0.51% event share and from 3.77% to 6.06% response coverage, but Reddit appeared only four times in each endpoint month. The percentage increase is driven by denominator movement, not a surge in Reddit events.
- Travel Insurance event share declined modestly from 2.22% to 2.11%, while response coverage rose from 16.41% to 18.32%. That is not contradictory. It means Reddit appeared in a slightly larger fraction of responses even though its share of the total citation-event pool fell.
The useful conclusion is not that every insurance vertical moved identically. It is that the Google AI Mode insurance aggregate declined, with most verticals moving in the same direction and a few exceptions showing why both event share and response coverage should be retained.

What Appeared When Reddit Disappeared?
Questions This Section Answers
- Did one publisher consistently replace Reddit?
- Which domains appeared most often in Reddit-loss scenarios?
- Does the evidence support a single replacement-source strategy?
No single domain replaced Reddit across the 38 matched scenarios where Reddit appeared in July but not September.
| Newly appearing September domain | Reddit-loss scenarios | Share of Reddit-loss scenarios |
|---|---|---|
| forbes.com | 14 | 36.8% |
| money.com | 9 | 23.7% |
| wsj.com | 6 | 15.8% |
| nerdwallet.com | 5 | 13.2% |
| qz.com | 5 | 13.2% |
| blakeinsurancegroup.com | 4 | 10.5% |
| nytimes.com | 4 | 10.5% |
| americanvisitorinsurance.com | 4 | 10.5% |
| guardianlife.com | 3 | 7.9% |
| dentalinsurance.com | 3 | 7.9% |
| anthem.com | 3 | 7.9% |
| healthforcalifornia.com | 3 | 7.9% |
Forbes was the most common newly appearing domain, appearing in 36.8% of Reddit-loss scenarios. Money.com appeared in 23.7%, and The Wall Street Journal in 15.8%.
Those percentages are higher than the leading replacement shares in the Google AI Overviews insurance study, but they still do not support a one-for-one replacement claim. Nearly two thirds of Reddit-loss scenarios did not newly add Forbes, and more than three quarters did not newly add Money.com.
The replacement mix spans broad publishers, financial publishers, insurance specialists, provider-owned sources and video platforms. The evidence therefore supports source redistribution, not a single replacement winner.
Platform Differences: Google AI Mode Declined Less Than ChatGPT
Questions This Section Answers
- Was the Reddit decline similar across AI platforms?
- How did Google AI Mode compare with ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Perplexity?
- Why should insurance teams report source visibility by platform?
The parent insurance study shows substantial platform divergence:
| AI platform | July Reddit event share | September Reddit event share | Relative change | July response coverage | September response coverage | Coverage change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 7.48% | 2.31% | -69.1% | 26.52% | 6.94% | -73.8% |
| Google AI Overviews | 3.36% | 2.25% | -33.1% | 12.71% | 9.04% | -28.9% |
| Google AI Mode | 3.18% | 2.13% | -33.1% | 15.47% | 12.43% | -19.6% |
| Gemini | 3.15% | 1.39% | -56.1% | 4.38% | 1.75% | -60.1% |
| Perplexity | 2.14% | 0.00% | -100.0% | 4.12% | 0.00% | -100.0% |
| Microsoft Copilot | 0.00% | 0.00% | n/a | 0.00% | 0.00% | n/a |
Google AI Mode's event-share decline is nearly identical to Google AI Overviews, but its response-level decline is smaller. It is also materially less severe than ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity in this insurance panel.
The matched results tell the same story. Google AI Mode produced 38 losses vs. 21 gains, compared with 49 losses vs. 25 gains for Google AI Overviews, 22 losses vs. 4 gains for ChatGPT, and 6 losses vs. 0 gains for Perplexity.
A single blended "Reddit visibility" KPI would obscure those differences. Insurance brands and publishers should treat platform as a first-class reporting dimension.

What This Means for Insurance Brands and CMOs
Questions This Section Answers
- Should insurance brands stop investing in Reddit?
- What should replace a single-source authority strategy?
- Which metrics should CMOs track next?
1. Do not treat Reddit as a fixed AI citation channel
Reddit remained a top-ten source in Google AI Mode insurance answers across the quarter, but its direct citation coverage declined. A durable AI-search strategy should assume that source selection can move even when a domain remains highly visible overall.
2. Track platform-specific source exposure
Google AI Mode declined much less than ChatGPT. If a brand tracks only blended AI visibility, it can miss a sharp deterioration on one engine and relative stability on another.
3. Build a portfolio of third-party authority
The Reddit-loss scenarios redistributed across Forbes, Money.com, The Wall Street Journal, NerdWallet, insurance specialists, provider-owned sources and other domains. That argues for a diversified earned-authority strategy rather than substituting one target for Reddit.
4. Separate citation visibility from recommendation visibility
A citation does not prove that the cited page caused a company recommendation. Likewise, losing a visible Reddit citation does not prove that Reddit stopped influencing retrieval or brand perception. Track citations, mentions, recommendations, sentiment and company-owned source visibility as separate variables.
5. Manage at the vertical and prompt-cluster level
Health, Life, Dental, Pet and Short Term Health Insurance moved differently from Medicare Supplement and Travel Insurance. Category averages are useful for strategy, but budgets should be allocated against the commercial questions that matter to the business.
What This Means for Insurance Publishers
The decline creates an opportunity for publishers, but not an automatic transfer of citations.
When Reddit disappears, the replacement mix is fragmented. Publishers with strong comparison content, first-party research, transparent methodology, product-specific evidence and crawlable pages may have more opportunities to enter the citation set, but no source is guaranteed to inherit Reddit's prior visibility.
For publishers selling advertising, partnerships or research products, a defensible commercial story can focus on:
- which AI surfaces cite the publisher;
- which insurance verticals and prompt clusters cite it;
- whether citation visibility is growing or declining month to month;
- which competitors and source types appear in the same answers;
- whether the publisher appears in scenarios where Reddit is receding; and
- how stable that visibility is across multiple AI platforms.
The defensible claim is measured citation visibility, not "AI trusts us" and not "our citation caused the recommendation."

How This Study Relates to Prior Reddit Citation Research
Independent research is directionally consistent with a gradual Reddit decline in Google AI Mode, but the exact percentages are not directly comparable.
PromptWatch measured Reddit's share of Google AI Mode citations moving from about 2.22% in early July to 1.54% in mid-August 2026, a 30.5% relative decline. PromptWatch described the movement as gradual rather than the abrupt break it observed in ChatGPT. That pattern is directionally consistent with Article 47, where Reddit's full-panel AI Mode event share moved 3.18% to 2.73% to 2.27% across July, August and September. The magnitudes should not be merged because the prompt populations, dates, denominators and collection systems differ.
Ahrefs' September 2026 broad U.S. Google AI Mode leaderboard ranked Reddit #1 with 17.9% mention share among its top sources. That broad all-topic prominence can coexist with Reddit ranking #5 at 14.2% response coverage across this three-month insurance study and #6 at 13.12% coverage in September. Ahrefs uses a broad query universe and a mention-share denominator, while Article 47 uses high-stakes insurance prompts and reports response citation coverage plus citation-event share.
Tinuiti's Q3 2026 citation research reports that most tracked AI platforms were at or near Q3 highs in overall social citation share, with Perplexity as a notable exception. Tinuiti also reports more than 13x growth in google.com's share of AI Mode citations during 2026 and increasing use of Google-owned surfaces such as Google Business Profiles and product cards. That broader source-category movement can coexist with a Reddit-specific decline because the social category and one social domain are different measurements.
Conductor's 2026 Insurance AI Search benchmark reports that Google AI Mode accounted for 43.9% of the insurance citations in its seven-engine analysis and averaged 7.3 citations per answer. Conductor analyzed more than 3.6 million insurance brand citations across more than 178,000 prompts from January through May 2026. Its industry assignment is based on the cited domain rather than the topic of the question, so its percentages are not directly comparable with Article 47. The useful agreement is structural: Google AI Mode is a material insurance citation surface, and citation behavior should be analyzed separately from brand mentions.
Taken together, the outside research strengthens the case for measurement discipline, not a universal Reddit narrative. The most defensible comparison is direction, platform specificity and methodological difference, not decimal-point equivalence across unrelated panels.

How This Study Is Different
This study narrows the broader Reddit research to one platform, one commercial family and one fixed three-month window.
It combines:
- a 3,966-response Google AI Mode insurance source slice;
- a locked balanced nine-vertical July-to-September endpoint;
- a 380-scenario matched prompt-plus-surface test;
- both citation-event share and response citation coverage;
- a fresh platform-specific vertical audit from the frozen source corpus; and
- a matched Reddit-loss replacement-source audit.
The question is narrow and commercial: how stable was Reddit as a directly cited source in Google AI Mode for consequential insurance consumer decisions during this quarter?
Why AI Citation Studies Can Disagree
Two studies can report different Reddit trends without either one necessarily being wrong.
Query population
Insurance comparison and coverage questions are not representative of the entire web. Reddit's role can differ in software, entertainment, troubleshooting, travel, local services or general informational queries.
Platform surface
Google AI Mode can behave differently from Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Microsoft Copilot.
Denominator
Citation-event share and response citation coverage measure different things. A source can lose event share without losing the same proportion of response coverage, or vice versa.
Time window
A short product disruption and a three-month endpoint comparison answer different questions.
Prompt weighting
This study does not weight prompts by search volume, revenue, media spend or conversion probability.
Matching contract
The locked Article 28 Google AI Mode matched panel contains 380 scenarios. The direct record-level reconstruction using the current frozen analytical contract produces the same 380 scenarios, 38 losses and 21 gains.
Domain and infrastructure handling
Domains are consolidated at the registrable-domain level, and obvious technical or navigation endpoints are excluded from publisher-level analysis.
The useful conclusion is not that one universal Reddit citation percentage exists. Citation visibility is conditional on platform, category, prompt set, time period, denominator and collection method.

Verticals Covered
The full Google AI Mode insurance source study covers 12 source vertical labels. The balanced endpoint uses these nine:
- Car Insurance
- Dental insurance
- Disability Insurance
- Health Insurance
- Life Insurance Companies
- Medicare Supplement Insurance
- Pet Insurance
- Short Term Health Insurance
- Travel Insurance
The three verticals without July source datasets are Long-Term Care Insurance, Renters Insurance and Vision Insurance.
Methodology
Source archive
This study uses the frozen July-September 2026 LLM Authority Index archive underlying the 2026 AI Citation Authority Study, the Google AI Mode insurance citation-source study and the parent insurance Reddit decline study.
Eligibility
A record is eligible for the platform-category source universe when it is:
- in July, August or September 2026;
- assigned to the Google AI Mode public platform family;
- associated with the Insurance family; and
- not explicitly marked as an extraction failure.
Exact-repeat anti-double-counting
An observation is treated as an exact analytical repeat when all of the following match:
- report month;
- exact raw platform/source surface;
- normalized prompt text; and
- exact set of original citation URLs.
One analytical instance is retained while source-dataset memberships are preserved for vertical analysis.
Prompt normalization
Prompt text is normalized with Unicode NFKC normalization, case folding, whitespace collapse and trimming.
Reddit identification
Citation URLs are consolidated to registrable domains using Public Suffix List logic. Reddit is identified as reddit.com.
Citation-event share
Reddit citation-event share = Reddit citation events / all eligible citation events
A response can contribute more than one Reddit event if multiple eligible Reddit URLs appear.
Response citation coverage
Reddit response citation coverage = responses citing Reddit / all eligible responses
Reddit counts no more than once per response for this metric.
Balanced endpoint panel
The like-for-like endpoint uses the nine source verticals represented in both July and September. Long-Term Care Insurance, Renters Insurance and Vision Insurance are excluded because July datasets were not present.
Strict matched prompt-plus-surface test
The matched set contains 380 scenarios, with 47 both, 38 losses, 21 gains, and 274 neither. The same normalized prompt and exact raw Google AI Mode surface must have exactly one eligible observation in July and one in September.
Vertical audit
The vertical table is recalculated directly from the frozen corpus at the source-vertical level. Each exact-deduplicated record is counted once within each relevant source vertical membership.
Public infrastructure exclusions
Obvious technical, map, image, account-activity and navigation endpoints are excluded from publisher-level analysis. Substantive publisher, carrier, broker, government and comparison domains remain eligible.
No causal interpretation
Observed citation changes do not establish why Google AI Mode changed a source set. They also do not prove that a citation caused a brand mention, recommendation, ranking, conversion or consumer decision.

Limitations
- The study covers a defined commercial insurance prompt panel, not all Google searches or all Google AI Mode queries.
- The three-month window can identify direction but cannot establish a permanent source-policy change.
- Google retrieval, ranking, AI Mode behavior and interface design can change during the study period.
- Source visibility is not source quality, trust or endorsement.
- The balanced endpoint excludes three insurance verticals that had no July dataset in the frozen archive.
- Some verticals have small Reddit event counts, so relative percentage changes can be unstable.
- The paired test controls prompt wording and raw surface but cannot control undocumented upstream product changes.
- Statistical significance does not identify the cause of the citation change or guarantee that the same direction will continue.
- Replacement-source counts are descriptive co-occurrence measures, not causal attribution.
