Reddit's Decline in AI Citations for High-Stakes Insurance Consumer Decisions

Research shows Reddit's visible AI citation share in insurance fell 43% from July to September 2026, with sharper losses in ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Research24 minutesUpdated Sep 29, 2026By Mark Huntley, J.D.

Reddit's visible role as an AI citation source declined materially across high-stakes insurance questions between July and September 2026.

In the balanced insurance panel, Reddit accounted for 3.36% of citation events in July and 1.92% in September, a 43.0% relative decline. Response citation coverage fell from 11.53% to 6.80%, a 41.0% decline.

The decline was broad. All 9 of 9 insurance verticals with measurable July Reddit citation share were lower in September. The median vertical decline was 40.3%.

A stricter matched-prompt test tells the same story. Across 1,460 exact July-to-September prompt-and-platform scenarios, there were 124 cases where Reddit appeared in July but not September, compared with 53 gains. That is 2.34 losses for every gain.

The result does not show that AI systems stopped using Reddit, that Reddit became unimportant for insurance research, or that another publisher took Reddit's place. It shows a measurable decline in visible Reddit citation activity within this defined high-stakes insurance prompt set.

Answer Capsule

What happened to Reddit citations in AI answers about insurance from July to September 2026?

Reddit's citation-event share fell from 3.36% to 1.92%, down 43.0% on a balanced set of insurance verticals present in both endpoint months. Reddit's response citation coverage fell 41.0%. All nine comparable insurance verticals declined on citation-event share. In the strict matched set, Reddit losses outnumbered gains 124 to 53. The decline was much steeper in ChatGPT and Perplexity than on Google's AI surfaces.

Key Findings

  • Reddit citation-event share in the balanced insurance panel fell from 3.36% in July to 1.92% in September, a 43.0% relative decline.
  • Reddit response citation coverage fell from 11.53% to 6.80%, down 41.0%.
  • All 9 comparable insurance verticals declined in citation-event share.
  • The median vertical decline was 40.3%.
  • 7 of 9 insurance verticals declined by at least 25%.
  • The strict matched-prompt test covered 1,460 scenarios and found 124 Reddit losses vs. 53 gains.
  • Matched response coverage fell from 13.90% to 9.04%, a 35.0% relative decline.
  • ChatGPT produced 22 losses vs. 4 gains in the strict matched insurance set.
  • Perplexity produced 6 losses and no gains in the matched set.
  • Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode also declined, but the loss-to-gain imbalance was smaller than in ChatGPT.
  • No single website replaced Reddit. Forbes appeared newly in 24.2% of Reddit-loss scenarios, and Money.com in 18.5%.

Questions This Study Answers

  • How much did Reddit citation visibility decline in high-stakes Insurance decisions from July to September 2026?
  • Did the decline persist when the insurance vertical set, prompt and platform were controlled more tightly?
  • What should insurance publishers, carriers, brokers and CMOs change in response to Reddit's platform-specific citation volatility?

Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions

Insurance is a high-stakes consumer decision category. Users are comparing coverage, price, exclusions, eligibility, provider reputation, policy structure and financial risk. That makes the visible source layer commercially important, but this study shows that the source layer should not be treated as fixed.

On the balanced nine-vertical Insurance panel:

  • Reddit citation-event share fell from 3.36% to 1.92%, a 43.0% relative decline;
  • Reddit response citation coverage fell from 11.53% to 6.80%, a 41.0% decline;
  • all 9 of 9 July-positive comparable insurance verticals declined by September; and
  • the strict matched prompt-platform test produced 124 Reddit losses versus 53 gains, or 2.34 losses for every gain.

The decline also differed sharply by platform. ChatGPT's balanced insurance Reddit citation-event share fell 69.1%, Perplexity fell to no captured Reddit citation events at the balanced September endpoint, Gemini declined materially, while Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode declined more gradually.

That pattern belongs inside the broader Persistence-Portability Gap framework.

The parent Insurance Citation Authority Study reports:

  • 80.2% median monthly Top 100 persistence;
  • 29.0% median cross-platform Top 100 portability; and
  • an approximate 51.2 percentage-point Persistence-Portability Gap.

This Article adds an important source-specific lesson: a highly persistent category source portfolio can still contain major source-level volatility. Reddit weakened materially even while the broader Insurance source market retained unusually strong month-to-month continuity.

That distinction matters operationally. Brands and publishers should measure at least three questions separately:

  1. Is the Insurance source portfolio persistent over time?
  2. Does source authority transfer across AI platforms?
  3. Is a specific source such as Reddit gaining, losing or holding visibility inside that portfolio?

Citation visibility should also remain separate from brand mentions, recommendation rate, ranking, sentiment, citation-recommendation coupling and downstream outcomes. A Reddit citation can disappear without a brand recommendation disappearing, and a Reddit citation can appear without causing the recommendation.

Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings

Research findingWhat insurance publishers can responsibly sayWhat insurance brands and CMOs can reasonably do
Reddit citation-event share fell 43.0% on the balanced Insurance panel"Historical prominence for a major source can change materially inside a high-stakes insurance decision market."Re-check any AI-search strategy that assumes Reddit's earlier direct-citation role is still representative.
Matched scenarios produced 124 Reddit losses and 53 gains"The decline survives a same-prompt, same-platform longitudinal test."Maintain fixed prompt panels for priority insurance decisions and track source gains, losses and persistence over time.
All 9 comparable Insurance verticals declined"The measured decline was broad across the Insurance family rather than isolated to one product line."Treat the result as a portfolio signal, then inspect the exact insurance product before reallocating budget.
ChatGPT and Perplexity weakened much more sharply than Google's AI surfaces"Reddit citation visibility was platform-specific during this period."Maintain platform-specific source maps instead of one blended AI visibility score.
No single domain replaced Reddit"The source market redistributed across multiple publishers and source types rather than one universal replacement."Build a portfolio of broad editorial, specialist, first-party and institutional sources rather than trying to replace Reddit with one outlet.
The parent Insurance category has 80.2% temporal persistence while Reddit itself declined sharply"A persistent category source ecosystem can still contain major source-level volatility."Track category persistence and individual source trajectories as separate operating metrics.
The parent Insurance category has only 29.0% median cross-platform portability"Insurance source authority transfers poorly across AI engines compared with its temporal stability."Maintain separate source priorities for Google AI Search, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot.
Broad all-topic studies still rank Reddit highly on several engines"Citation prominence depends on query universe, platform, metric and time period."Do not import a broad Reddit leaderboard into an Insurance campaign without category validation.
Citation loss is not the same as recommendation loss"This study measures visible source behavior, not recommendation causality."Measure citations, mentions, recommendations, rank, sentiment and business outcomes separately.

The operating model is straightforward: identify the sources that matter for the exact insurance decision, measure them by platform, keep a fixed longitudinal prompt panel, and update the source portfolio when the evidence changes.

How This Study Fits the High-Stakes Consumer Decisions Research Corpus

Article 28 is the Insurance branch of the broader Reddit trend research.

It should be read with:

The six platform-specific Insurance Reddit studies, Articles 46, 47, 48, 58, 59 and 60, isolate how this trend behaved in Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.

What We Studied

The insurance family contains 12 source vertical labels:

  1. Car Insurance
  2. Dental insurance
  3. Disability Insurance
  4. Health Insurance
  5. Life Insurance Companies
  6. Long-Term Care Insurance
  7. Medicare Supplement Insurance
  8. Pet Insurance
  9. Renters Insurance
  10. Short Term Health Insurance
  11. Travel Insurance
  12. Vision Insurance

The balanced July-to-September endpoint analysis includes the 9 verticals present in both months. Three verticals were not included in the balanced endpoint comparison because they had no July dataset in the frozen archive:

  • Long-Term Care Insurance
  • Renters Insurance
  • Vision Insurance

Those verticals can still appear in broader family studies for months in which data exists, but they are not used to calculate the July-to-September balanced decline in this article.

Reddit's Insurance Citation Share Fell 43.0%

MonthDeduplicated insurance responsesCitation eventsReddit citation eventsReddit event shareReddit response coverageReddit rank by response coverage
July 20264,34421,1887123.36%11.53%#4
August 20265,01522,6665942.62%9.17%#5
September 20264,97121,8774452.03%7.14%#5

The full monthly insurance panel shows a steady decline across the quarter. The balanced endpoint comparison is the more defensible July-to-September estimate because it holds the vertical set constant.

On that balanced basis:

  • July: 712 Reddit citation events out of 21,188 total citation events.
  • September: 352 Reddit citation events out of 18,367 total citation events.
  • Reddit event share: 3.36% to 1.92%.
  • Relative decline: 43.0%.
  • Reddit response coverage: 11.53% to 6.80%.
  • Relative coverage decline: 41.0%.

The two metrics answer different questions. Citation-event share measures Reddit's portion of all citation occurrences. Response citation coverage measures the percentage of AI responses that cited Reddit at least once. Reporting both helps avoid overinterpreting a change caused only by longer or shorter citation lists.

Every Comparable Insurance Vertical Declined

All nine insurance verticals with July and September data had lower Reddit citation-event share in September.

Travel Insurance3.53%2.11%-40.3%14.42%9.55%-33.7%

The category was not uniform, however.

The steepest citation-event-share declines were:

  • Pet Insurance: 7.05% to 3.65%, a 48.2% decline.
  • Dental insurance: 1.44% to 0.75%, a 48.2% decline.
  • Health Insurance: 2.24% to 1.18%, a 47.4% decline.
  • Short Term Health Insurance: 1.77% to 0.94%, a 47.0% decline.

Travel Insurance, one of the larger insurance panels, fell from 3.53% to 2.11%, a 40.3% decline in Reddit event share.

Car Insurance is a useful reminder to examine more than one metric. Its citation-event share was nearly flat, moving from 1.91% to 1.90%, yet Reddit response coverage fell from 7.67% to 3.96%, a 48.4% decline. That means Reddit appeared in far fewer answers even though its share of the remaining citation events was similar.

This is why the article does not reduce Reddit visibility to one composite score.

The Strict Matched-Prompt Test Confirms the Direction

A month-level trend can be influenced by prompt mix. To control for that, we also compared the same normalized prompt on the same raw platform surface in July and September.

A scenario was included only when there was exactly one eligible July observation and exactly one eligible September observation after the study's exact-repeat anti-double-counting rule.

That produced 1,460 matched insurance scenarios.

Matched resultCount
Reddit cited in both July and September79
Reddit cited in July but not September124
Reddit absent in July but cited in September53
Reddit absent in both months1,204

Reddit losses outnumbered gains 124 to 53, or 2.34 losses for every gain.

Matched response coverage fell from 13.90% to 9.04%, a 35.0% relative decline.

The exact paired test is statistically inconsistent with an even loss-versus-gain split under the study's matched design, with an exact two-sided McNemar/binomial p-value of approximately 9.73e-08. Statistical significance does not establish a cause. It indicates that the observed directional imbalance is unlikely to be explained by a 50/50 loss-gain process within this matched sample.

The Decline Was Much Steeper in ChatGPT Than on Google

The endpoint rows below use the balanced insurance vertical set for July and September. August is shown elsewhere as an observed midpoint, but the percentage change here is calculated only on the balanced endpoints.

ChatGPT

Reddit's insurance citation-event share fell from 7.48% to 2.31%, a 69.1% decline. Response coverage fell from 26.52% to 6.94%.

The matched ChatGPT subset was even clearer: 22 losses versus 4 gains, a 5.5-to-1 imbalance.

This direction is consistent with PromptWatch's August 2026 observation that Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations fell sharply over a short period. PromptWatch measured a different query universe, time window and denominator, so its percentage should not be expected to match this insurance panel. The value of the comparison is the platform-specific direction.

Google AI Overviews

Reddit's insurance event share declined from 3.36% to 2.25%. The matched set produced 49 losses and 25 gains.

The decline is meaningful, but the imbalance is much smaller than ChatGPT's. That supports a platform-specific interpretation rather than a universal claim that all AI systems stopped citing Reddit in the same way.

Google AI Mode

Reddit's event share fell from 3.18% to 2.13%. The strict matched set had 38 losses versus 21 gains.

Ahrefs' broad September 2026 AI Mode data still ranked Reddit as one of the platform's largest citation sources across all topics. That does not conflict with this study. The Ahrefs population is broad and all-topic, whereas this article isolates a high-stakes insurance decision set and measures July-to-September movement.

Perplexity

Reddit moved from 2.14% of insurance citation events in July to no captured Reddit citation events in the balanced September insurance endpoint. The matched Perplexity set contained 6 losses and zero gains.

Tinuiti's Q3 2026 research also identified Perplexity as a notable exception to the broader increase in social citation share observed on several other AI platforms. Again, the populations differ, but the direction is relevant.

Gemini

Gemini started from a lower insurance Reddit baseline. Event share fell from 3.15% to 1.39%. Its matched set had 9 losses and 3 gains.

Because the baseline counts are smaller, relative percentages should be read cautiously.

Microsoft Copilot

No Reddit citation events appeared in the captured Copilot insurance slice at either endpoint.

That is a result of this capture and filtering process, not evidence that Microsoft Copilot never cites Reddit for insurance questions.

Microsoft Copilot15800n/a0.00%0.00%

The platform table is one reason a blended "AI Reddit visibility" score can be misleading. A single aggregate metric would hide a 5.5-to-1 ChatGPT loss-gain imbalance alongside much milder change on Google AI Mode.

For an insurer or insurance publisher, platform-specific measurement is therefore not a reporting luxury. It is necessary to understand where source visibility is actually changing.

What Appeared When Reddit Disappeared?

The matched-pair design identified 124 scenarios where Reddit was cited in July but not in September. We then examined which registrable domains appeared in September that were not present in the matched July source set.

Newly appearing September domainReddit-loss scenariosShare of Reddit-loss scenarios

cnbc.com86.5%
nytimes.com75.6%
worldnomads.com75.6%
allianztravelinsurance.com75.6%
marketwatch.com64.8%

Forbes was the most common newly appearing domain, but it appeared in only 24.2% of Reddit-loss scenarios. Money.com appeared in 18.5%.

That is more concentration than we observed in the financial Reddit-decline study, but it is still far from a one-for-one replacement pattern. More than three quarters of Reddit-loss scenarios did not newly add Forbes, and more than four fifths did not newly add Money.com.

The newly appearing sources span several source types:

  • large editorial publishers such as Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, CNBC and The New York Times;
  • broad consumer and financial publishers such as Money.com and NerdWallet;
  • insurance specialists such as Insurify;
  • travel-insurance specialists such as World Nomads, Allianz Travel Insurance and Seven Corners;
  • video sources such as YouTube;
  • and first-party or provider-owned insurance sites.

The evidence therefore supports source redistribution, not a single replacement winner.

Why Reddit Loss Does Not Mean Reddit Stopped Influencing AI Answers

Visible citations are only one layer of an AI system's interaction with the web.

A model or search system may encounter a Reddit page during retrieval and still not expose Reddit as a clickable source. Reddit may also influence language or topic framing through training data or intermediate search steps that are not visible in the final answer.

This study does not have access to those internal retrieval traces across all platforms. It measures only the visible citation layer captured in the dataset.

That distinction matters because a brand could lose visible Reddit citations while still benefiting from authentic Reddit discussion, reputation effects, query discovery or indirect retrieval. Conversely, a visible Reddit citation does not prove that Reddit caused the model to recommend a particular insurer.

Insurance Nearly Matched the Overall High-Stakes Reddit Decline

The insurance family did not behave like an isolated outlier. Its balanced citation-event-share decline of 43.0% is almost identical to the 43.3% decline measured in the broader high-stakes consumer decision panel.

That comparison is useful for two reasons.

First, it suggests the insurance result is not being driven by one unusually volatile product category. All nine comparable insurance verticals declined, and the family-level movement closely tracks the larger cross-category trend.

Second, the matched-prompt results show that the mechanism was still not identical across every category. In the overall high-stakes study, Reddit losses outnumbered gains by more than three to one. In insurance, the ratio was 2.34 to one. Insurance therefore participated in the broader decline, but its matched answer-level turnover was somewhat less one-sided than the aggregate panel.

This is a useful example of why category studies add value beyond the flagship trend article. A broad decline can be real while the magnitude, platform mix and replacement sources differ materially by commercial category.

Questions this section answers: Is insurance an outlier? Does the insurance trend support the broader Reddit decline? Why publish a category-specific study if the overall direction is similar?

What the Individual Insurance Verticals Suggest

The vertical table is more informative when read as a set of different consumer decision environments rather than as nine interchangeable insurance topics.

Pet Insurance

Pet Insurance started with the highest July Reddit citation-event share in the balanced insurance panel at 7.05%. By September it had fallen to 3.65%, a 48.2% decline. Response coverage also fell from 23.34% to 12.50%.

This matters commercially because pet insurance is a category where first-hand experience, exclusions, reimbursement stories and claims discussions are naturally suited to community content. The decline therefore shows that even a vertical with an intuitive UGC fit can lose direct Reddit citation visibility.

Dental Insurance

Dental insurance fell from 1.44% to 0.75% of citation events, down 48.2%, while response coverage fell 57.5%. The event-share baseline was modest, but the response-level decline was among the largest in the family.

For publishers and brands, this is a reminder that a small source share can still represent a meaningful number of answers. Response coverage is often the more intuitive metric for marketers asking, "How often does Reddit show up at all?"

Health Insurance and Short Term Health Insurance

Health Insurance declined 47.4% on citation-event share, while Short Term Health Insurance declined 47.0%. Both categories involve eligibility, plan structure, cost and regulatory complexity, where first-party, government and specialist sources may compete strongly with community discussion.

The study does not establish that those source types caused Reddit's decline. It does show that Reddit's visible citation role became smaller in both categories over the period.

Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance is one of the largest balanced insurance panels and provides a useful middle case. Reddit's citation-event share fell 40.3%, from 3.53% to 2.11%, while response coverage fell 33.7%.

The replacement-source table also includes several travel-insurance specialists, including World Nomads, Allianz Travel Insurance, Seven Corners and American Visitor Insurance. This does not prove direct substitution, but it shows how category-specialist domains can enter the citation mix when a broad community source disappears from a matched response.

Life, Disability and Medicare Supplement Insurance

Life Insurance Companies declined 29.5%, Disability Insurance declined 24.2%, and Medicare Supplement Insurance declined 38.2% on citation-event share.

These lower relative declines demonstrate that the quarter was not a uniform collapse. Reddit remained visible in some answers and some categories at the end of the period. The correct conclusion is a broad reduction in measured citation visibility, not disappearance.

Car Insurance

Car Insurance is the clearest example of why source visibility should be measured with multiple metrics. Citation-event share declined only 0.7%, essentially flat, but response citation coverage fell 48.4%.

One plausible mathematical explanation is that Reddit appeared in fewer answers but, when it did appear, those responses contained fewer total citation events or gave Reddit proportionally more weight. The dataset can establish the metric movement, but it cannot establish the internal reason for that movement.

Questions this section answers: Which insurance verticals changed the most? Did Reddit disappear uniformly? Why can citation-event share and response coverage move differently?

A Practical Measurement Framework for Insurance AI Visibility

The insurance results suggest a measurement stack with at least four separate layers.

Layer 1: Citation coverage

Track whether a source such as Reddit, Money.com, Forbes, NerdWallet, Insurify or an insurer's own domain appears in the answer at all.

This is the simplest source-presence metric and is useful for executive reporting.

Layer 2: Citation-event share

Track how much of the total citation volume belongs to each source. This adds context when answers cite many sources and prevents a single source presence from being treated as equivalent to a dominant citation position.

Layer 3: Brand mention and recommendation visibility

Track which insurers, brokers, marketplaces or products are actually mentioned and recommended. Citation visibility and brand recommendation visibility can move independently.

Layer 4: Matched prompt drift

Rerun the same high-intent prompts by platform over time. A stable monthly aggregate can hide individual prompts that completely change their source sets, while a falling aggregate can hide prompt clusters that remain stable.

For a commercial insurance program, these layers should be reported by product line. Pet Insurance, Life Insurance and Medicare Supplement Insurance should not be assumed to share one source ecosystem merely because all are insurance products.

Questions this section answers: What should an insurance CMO actually monitor? Why are citations alone insufficient? How can teams detect source drift before it becomes a larger visibility problem?

What This Means for Insurance Brands and CMOs

1. Do not build insurance AI visibility around one community surface

Reddit can be valuable for authentic product experience, claims discussions, pricing conversations, policy questions and consumer sentiment. But the visible citation layer changed materially within one quarter.

A durable program should combine community visibility with authoritative editorial coverage, specialist insurance publishers, strong owned content and direct first-party evidence.

2. Measure ChatGPT separately from Google's AI surfaces

The ChatGPT decline was much steeper than the Google declines. A strategy can therefore appear successful in Google AI Mode while losing direct Reddit citation visibility in ChatGPT.

The correct unit of analysis is platform + prompt cluster + category, not a single blended score.

3. Watch the specific insurance product line

Pet Insurance and Dental insurance fell much more sharply on citation-event share than Car Insurance. Car Insurance's event share was nearly flat even as response-level coverage fell sharply.

Executives should therefore avoid extrapolating the insurance family average to every line of business.

4. Track citations and recommendations separately

A decline in Reddit citations does not prove a decline in brand recommendations. Recommendation visibility can move independently because AI systems can mention companies without citing Reddit and can cite Reddit without recommending the companies discussed there.

5. Treat third-party authority as a portfolio

The replacement analysis surfaces Forbes, Money.com, NerdWallet, insurance specialists, travel-insurance publishers and first-party insurer sites. No single outlet is sufficient.

The practical implication is a diversified earned-media and evidence strategy rather than an attempt to identify one replacement source for Reddit.

Want the full Authority Index

The paid deep-dive adds competitor threat profiles, the gap matrix, citation failure map, platform-by-platform recovery roadmap, and client-specific economic modeling.

What This Means for Insurance Publishers

Insurance publishers can use the shift to evaluate where their pages are entering the citation mix, but the data should not be framed as "Reddit lost, therefore publishers won."

A stronger commercial story is measurable visibility:

  • which AI platforms cite the publisher;
  • which insurance verticals cite it;
  • how often the publisher appears in high-intent questions;
  • which competitors and first-party insurer sites appear beside it;
  • whether its citation coverage is increasing or declining by month;
  • and whether it appears in matched scenarios where Reddit previously appeared.

That is evidence a publisher can show to advertisers without claiming that AI "trusts" the publication or that a citation caused a recommendation.

How This Study Relates to Prior Reddit and Insurance AI Research

PromptWatch: sharp ChatGPT-specific Reddit decline

PromptWatch reported that Reddit averaged about 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations from July 18 through August 7, 2026, then fell to about 0.52% by August 14-17, an 86.4% relative decline. PromptWatch also reported much gentler declines on Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode over roughly the same period.

Source: PromptWatch, Why Did ChatGPT Stop Citing Reddit? Inside the August 2026 Citation Collapse

The Insurance panel is directionally consistent with that platform divergence. The percentages should not be merged because the prompt populations, time windows, denominators and collection systems differ.

Tinuiti: social citation behavior differs by platform

Tinuiti's Q3 2026 citation research found most tracked AI platforms at or near Q3 highs in social citation share, while identifying Perplexity as a notable exception.

Source: Tinuiti, AI Citation Trends Report Q3 2026

Tinuiti tracks a broader commercial category mix rather than this Reddit-only Insurance panel. The relevant agreement is methodological: social-source behavior can move differently by platform and category.

Ahrefs: Reddit can remain a broad-web leader while declining in Insurance

Ahrefs' September 2026 broad U.S. all-topic studies placed Reddit at 16.8% mention share in ChatGPT, 17.9% in Google AI Mode, 18.5% in Google AI Overviews, 28.5% in Gemini and 21.6% in Perplexity. Reddit ranked #1 in ChatGPT, AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity, and #2 in AI Overviews.

Sources: Ahrefs ChatGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity

That does not contradict the 43.0% Insurance decline measured here. Ahrefs uses a broad all-topic query universe and a different mention-share denominator. Reddit can remain one of the largest broad-web AI sources while losing direct citation share inside a narrower high-intent Insurance decision market.

Conductor: Insurance citations, mentions and engine mix are separate measurements

Conductor's 2026 Insurance AI Search benchmark analyzed more than 3.6 million Insurance brand citations across more than 178,000 prompts and seven answer engines for its January through May 2026 answer-engine analysis. It reported Google AI Mode at 43.9% of measured Insurance citations, Perplexity at 33.6%, and ChatGPT at 11.9%.

Conductor also found a meaningful split between the domains winning citations and the brands winning mentions, reinforcing the need to measure source citations and brand visibility separately.

Source: Conductor, 2026 Insurance AI Search & AI Overviews Benchmarks

Conductor's unit of analysis, prompt set and citation denominator differ substantially from this Reddit trend study. The useful comparison is structural: Insurance AI visibility changes by engine, and citation share is not the same measurement as brand mention visibility.

Why AI Citation Studies Can Disagree

Independent AI citation studies frequently produce different percentages without either study being wrong.

The major reasons include:

  1. Different prompt populations. Broad informational prompts will produce a different source mix from high-intent insurance comparison prompts.
  2. Different platforms. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot do not expose identical source behavior.
  3. Different dates. AI source selection can change within days or weeks.
  4. Different denominators. Citation share, response coverage, source mentions and percentage of top-source citations are not interchangeable metrics.
  5. Different domain normalization. Subdomains can be consolidated or separated.
  6. Different infrastructure filtering. Search wrappers, image endpoints and map services can materially affect raw counts.
  7. Different handling of duplicate prompts or duplicate captures. Anti-double-counting rules change denominators.
  8. Different definitions of a citation. Some systems expose source cards, inline links, footnotes or search traces differently.

This article is designed to be reproducible inside the LLM Authority Index corpus, not to force agreement with an unrelated study population.

Why This Study Is Different

This study adds several controls that broad trend reports often do not combine:

  • a defined High-Stakes Consumer Decisions insurance family;
  • a balanced July-to-September vertical panel;
  • a second response-level metric in addition to citation-event share;
  • exact prompt + raw surface matched scenarios;
  • platform-specific matched loss/gain counts;
  • vertical-level results across nine comparable insurance categories;
  • replacement-source analysis within Reddit-loss scenarios;
  • registrable-domain normalization;
  • explicit infrastructure exclusions;
  • and a documented exact-repeat anti-double-counting rule.

The purpose is not to declare a universal Reddit trend for the entire internet. It is to describe a specific and commercially relevant source shift with transparent boundaries.

Methodology

Study period

Primary time window: July, August and September 2026.

The directional endpoint comparison uses July and September. August is retained as an observed midpoint.

Source corpus

The analysis uses the frozen LLM Authority Index high-stakes consumer decision corpus assembled from AI-answer datasets across 53 originating vertical labels and six platform families.

Insurance family

The insurance family includes 12 source vertical labels. The balanced endpoint panel includes only the 9 labels represented in both July and September.

Eligible observations

Observations were eligible when:

  • report month was July, August or September 2026;
  • the observation was not explicitly marked as an extraction failure;
  • and the observation passed the study's exact-repeat anti-double-counting rule.

Exact-repeat anti-double-counting

An observation was treated as an exact repeat when it had the same:

  • report month;
  • exact raw platform/source surface;
  • normalized prompt text after Unicode NFKC normalization, casefolding, whitespace collapse and trimming;
  • and exact set of original citation URLs.

One observation was retained from an exact-repeat group.

This is an analytical anti-double-counting rule. It does not prove the prompt was executed only once in the underlying collection process.

Domain normalization

Citation URLs were parsed to hostnames, lowercased, stripped of www. and consolidated to registrable domains using the Public Suffix List.

Examples include:

  • money.usnews.com -> usnews.com
  • finance.yahoo.com -> yahoo.com

Infrastructure exclusions

Obvious non-editorial infrastructure and navigation endpoints were excluded, including OpenAI image endpoints, Mapbox, OpenStreetMap, Yelp CDN, Bing image/map/ad wrappers and Google My Activity.

Substantive Google-owned web surfaces were not blanket-excluded.

Primary metric: Reddit citation-event share

Reddit citation-event share = Reddit citation events / all eligible citation events.

A response can contribute more than one event to the overall denominator if it cites multiple domains.

Secondary metric: Reddit response citation coverage

Reddit response citation coverage = eligible responses citing Reddit at least once / all eligible responses.

Reddit counts at most once per response for this metric.

Balanced endpoint analysis

Only insurance verticals represented in both July and September were included in the family-level endpoint comparison.

That prevents a newly added September vertical from mechanically changing the July-to-September family mix.

Strict matched prompt + platform analysis

Matched scenarios used the same normalized prompt and exact raw platform/source surface in July and September.

A matched key was excluded when more than one eligible observation remained in either endpoint month. 9 ambiguous keys were excluded under that rule.

Replacement-source analysis

For each matched scenario that cited Reddit in July but not September, we calculated the set of registrable domains that appeared in September but not in July.

A domain can therefore appear in the replacement table alongside other newly appearing domains from the same response. The table is not a mutually exclusive attribution model.

Limitations

  1. This is a defined prompt panel, not all insurance searches. Results should not be generalized to every insurance question asked by every consumer.
  2. Three insurance verticals lacked July data. Long-Term Care Insurance, Renters Insurance and Vision Insurance are excluded from the balanced endpoint analysis.
  3. Visible citations are not retrieval traces. A system can use or encounter Reddit without exposing Reddit as a final citation.
  4. Citation does not prove influence or causality. A citation does not establish that the cited source caused a company recommendation.
  5. Platform capture differs. Source formats and extraction behavior vary by AI product.
  6. Some verticals have smaller citation counts than others. Relative changes in low-baseline categories should be interpreted cautiously.
  7. Prompt wording matters. Different commercial-intent mixes can change source composition.
  8. The study covers a three-month period. Later months may reverse, extend or alter the observed trend.

Commercial Disclosure

LLM Authority Index is part of a business ecosystem that provides AI visibility, research, and marketing services. Affiliated businesses may have current or historical commercial relationships with companies or publishers that appear in the dataset. Commercial relationships are not inputs to ranking methodology. Domains are included based on observed citation data. No ranking is an endorsement. No relationship is treated as a cause of citation behavior.
