LLM Authority Index Research | ChatGPT | High-Stakes Consumer Decisions | July-September 2026
LLM Authority Index analyzed 5,789 deduplicated ChatGPT responses across 53 high-stakes consumer source verticals from July through September 2026.
Forbes ranked #1 in this high-stakes panel, appearing as a cited domain in 33.5% of ChatGPT responses. NerdWallet ranked #2 at 21.1%, Reddit #3 at 17.1%, The Wall Street Journal #4 at 16.6%, and Bankrate #5 at 11.9%.
This is a very different source hierarchy from broad, all-topic ChatGPT research. Ahrefs' September 2026 all-topic U.S. study ranks Reddit #1, Wikipedia #2, Consumer Reports #3, Forbes #4, and EngineerFix #5. NerdWallet is #28 in that all-topic list. Ahrefs ChatGPT study
The difference is the research population. LLMAI focuses on high-stakes commercial decisions in credit, debt, banking, insurance, investing, mortgages, retirement, health and medical services. In that population, large financial publishers and specialist decision-support sites become much more visible.
This platform study is part of the 2026 AI Citation Authority Study.
Answer Capsule
Which websites are most frequently cited by ChatGPT for high-stakes consumer decisions? In the LLM Authority Index July-September 2026 panel, Forbes ranked #1, followed by NerdWallet, Reddit, The Wall Street Journal and Bankrate by response-level citation coverage. The study analyzes 5,789 deduplicated ChatGPT responses, 26,898 visible citation events, and 2,824 registrable cited domains. The Top 100 account for 58.8% of all domain-response appearances, making ChatGPT's measured high-stakes citation distribution more concentrated than the overall six-platform study. ChatGPT's Top 100 also overlaps only modestly with Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, reinforcing the need for platform-specific publisher strategies.
Key Findings
- The July-September archive contains 6,619 raw ChatGPT observations.
- 144 observations were explicitly marked as extraction failures and excluded from valid-response analysis.
- The raw ChatGPT files contain 30,382 citation-array entries before analytical exact-repeat handling.
- The primary ChatGPT dataset contains 5,789 deduplicated responses and 26,898 visible citation events.
- The dataset contains 2,824 registrable cited domains and 23,248 response-level domain appearances.
- Forbes ranked #1 at 33.5% response coverage, followed by NerdWallet at 21.1%, Reddit at 17.1%, The Wall Street Journal at 16.6%, and Bankrate at 11.9%.
- The Top 25 domains accounted for 41.1% of domain-response appearances; the Top 100 accounted for 58.8%.
- Only 49 domains appeared in the ChatGPT Top 100 in July, August and September, indicating substantially less monthly Top 100 persistence than observed on the two Google search surfaces in this panel.
- July and September shared 56 of 100 ChatGPT Top 100 domains, producing 38.9% Jaccard similarity.
- ChatGPT's Top 100 shared 54 domains with Google AI Overviews and 53 with Google AI Mode, corresponding to Top 100 Jaccard similarities of approximately 37.0% and 36.1%.
- ChatGPT's leading source varied sharply by high-stakes category: Forbes led Credit, Insurance, and Investing/Retirement/Mortgage/Financial Decisions, while Healthline led Health and Medical.
- Reddit remained a major source in this LLMAI ChatGPT corpus, but its citation visibility declined substantially between July and September. That longitudinal change is analyzed separately in the Reddit decline study.

Questions This Study Answers
- Which publishers are most frequently cited by ChatGPT for high-stakes consumer decisions?
- Which third-party sites should CMOs evaluate when building a ChatGPT-focused earned-media strategy?
- Which publishers can demonstrate independent ChatGPT citation visibility to advertisers?
- Why can a high-stakes ChatGPT source ranking look very different from an all-topic ChatGPT ranking?
- Does ChatGPT cite the same publishers as Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode?
- Which sources are broad across multiple commercial verticals, and which are category specialists?
- How stable is the ChatGPT Top 100 from month to month?
- Should a brand use the same publisher target list for ChatGPT as it uses for Google AI search?
Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions
This study is research-based, but its purpose is commercial decision support.
ChatGPT is a commercially important answer environment, but the source market measured here is not static and should not be treated as one universal publisher leaderboard.
For publishers, this creates a measurable commercial asset: ChatGPT citation visibility can be documented by category, vertical, platform and time rather than reduced to organic rank, referral traffic or one blended AI visibility score.
For brands and CMOs, the operating question is different:
Which sources are already present around the consequential commercial questions our customers ask ChatGPT, and which of those sources deserve attention for PR, partnerships, content distribution, competitive research and AI search optimization?
Three findings matter for daily planning:
- the Top 100 account for 58.8% of domain-response appearances;
- only 49 domains remained in the ChatGPT Top 100 in July, August and September; and
- the median of the three monthly Top 100 Jaccard comparisons was 41.8%.
That is materially lower platform-wide persistence than the two Google search surfaces in this research program.
At the same time, ChatGPT's final Top 100 shared 54 domains with Google AI Overviews, 53 with Google AI Mode, 52 with Perplexity, 42 with Gemini and 38 with Microsoft Copilot.
This is why the Persistence-Portability Gap framework matters.
A platform-specific Persistence-Portability Gap should not be calculated by subtracting one cross-platform pairwise overlap statistic from ChatGPT's monthly persistence. Those measurements use different comparison structures. The defensible commercial conclusion is:
ChatGPT source strategy requires both a durable publisher map and more frequent remeasurement than a one-time citation snapshot can provide.
The Reddit findings make that especially clear. Reddit ranked #3 in this July-September high-stakes ChatGPT panel, yet its visibility declined materially over the same period. Independent September research also reports sharp ChatGPT-specific Reddit losses in other query populations. The appropriate lesson is not that Reddit is always important or always absent. It is that source access, retrieval behavior, category and collection timing can materially alter the visible ChatGPT source layer.
Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings
| Research finding | What publishers can responsibly say | What brands and CMOs can reasonably do |
|---|---|---|
| Forbes, NerdWallet, Reddit, The Wall Street Journal and Bankrate lead this high-stakes ChatGPT source map | "Our domain is measurably visible in ChatGPT for this defined commercial decision population." | Use the platform-wide leaders as a strategic research tier, then evaluate category, vertical and current prompt fit before outreach or investment. |
| The Top 100 account for 58.8% of domain-response appearances | "ChatGPT's measured high-stakes citation market is relatively concentrated." | Start with the recurring high-frequency source layer, then add specialists from the exact buyer journey. |
| Only 49 domains remained in the Top 100 across all three months | "A strong one-month ChatGPT position should not be described as durable without longitudinal evidence." | Recheck ChatGPT source priorities more frequently than a single quarterly screenshot or annual benchmark would allow. |
| Median monthly Top 100 persistence is 41.8% | "The leading ChatGPT source portfolio changed materially during the study window." | Treat current measurement as operational infrastructure. Maintain a dated source map and watch gains, losses and replacements. |
| ChatGPT shares 54 Top 100 domains with Google AI Overviews and 53 with Google AI Mode | "ChatGPT overlaps with Google AI Search, but a large portion of the leading source set is different." | Do not reuse one Google publisher list as the ChatGPT strategy. Maintain a ChatGPT-specific source layer. |
| ChatGPT shares only 42 Top 100 domains with Gemini and 38 with Microsoft Copilot | "Strong ChatGPT citation visibility does not establish broad cross-platform authority." | Check portability before allocating cross-platform PR, content or partnership resources. |
| Source leadership changes sharply by decision family | "Our strongest ChatGPT authority may be category-specific rather than universal." | Use the Credit, Insurance, Financial and Health child studies before deciding which sources matter for a particular product. |
| Ahrefs ranks Reddit #1 in a broad September all-topic ChatGPT population while this high-stakes panel ranks Forbes #1 | "Citation leadership depends on the prompt population and measurement contract." | Match publisher research to the commercial questions the brand actually cares about rather than importing a general-web leaderboard. |
| BrightEdge observed Reddit citation presence in a fixed ChatGPT Education panel fall from 17.2% to zero across two weeks | "Third-party source visibility can change rapidly even when the underlying publisher content has not changed." | Treat source-access and retrieval changes as a monitoring risk. Do not make a third-party citation source the sole foundation of an AI visibility strategy. |
| Machine Relations observed no Reddit ChatGPT citations in its monitored public index window while LLMAI and Ahrefs did observe Reddit | "Different ChatGPT monitoring systems can produce different source-presence results." | Require methodology, dates, query population and product surface before using any citation benchmark for budget or outreach decisions. |
| Foglift found a strong first-party vendor citation pattern in its ChatGPT buyer-intent sample | "ChatGPT can draw materially from company-owned sources in some commercial query populations." | Invest in owned product, comparison, FAQ and research content alongside third-party publisher strategy. |
| Citation visibility does not establish recommendation causality | "Our content is measurably present in the visible ChatGPT source layer." | Use citation visibility to prioritize research and outreach, then separately measure brand mentions, recommendation rate, ranking, sentiment and citation-recommendation coupling before claiming business impact. |
The daily operating model is therefore four-layered:
- Current ChatGPT core: maintain the sources that matter now, with the collection date attached.
- Category and vertical layer: identify which sources matter for the brand's exact high-stakes buyer journey.
- Longitudinal check: monitor whether those sources persist, decline or disappear from repeated measurement.
- Cross-platform check: determine whether the same sources also matter in Google AI Search, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot.
This research should influence where teams investigate, pitch, partner, publish and monitor. It does not establish that buying advertising, earning coverage or publishing on a cited domain will cause ChatGPT to cite or recommend a brand.

Citation Concentration
| Ranking depth | Share of domain-response appearances | Share of citation events |
|---|---|---|
| Top 10 | 31.86% | 34.40% |
| Top 25 | 41.08% | 44.20% |
| Top 50 | 49.17% | 52.09% |
| Top 100 | 58.79% | 61.35% |
ChatGPT's high-stakes source distribution is relatively concentrated in this panel. That does not mean the long tail is unimportant: more than 2,800 registrable domains were cited somewhere in the study.
The Leading ChatGPT Sources Differ by High-Stakes Category
| High-stakes family | Responses | Five leading cited domains |
|---|---|---|
| Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending | 2,053 | forbes.com 36.1%, wsj.com 32.0%, nerdwallet.com 29.1%, bankrate.com 24.9%, reddit.com 19.6% |
| Insurance | 1,267 | forbes.com 48.5%, nerdwallet.com 29.0%, reddit.com 15.2%, moneygeek.com 13.0%, squaremouth.com 10.7% |
| Investing, Retirement, Mortgage and Financial Decisions | 1,353 | forbes.com 31.0%, nerdwallet.com 18.7%, reddit.com 17.7%, wsj.com 12.6%, bankrate.com 11.1% |
| Health and Medical | 1,116 | healthline.com 21.1%, forbes.com 14.8%, reddit.com 14.0%, hearingtracker.com 7.4%, consumerreports.org 7.0% |
The differences are large enough to change publisher strategy.
- Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending: Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, NerdWallet, Bankrate and Reddit lead.
- Insurance: Forbes has unusually high visibility, followed by NerdWallet, Reddit, MoneyGeek and Squaremouth.
- Investing, Retirement, Mortgage and Financial Decisions: Forbes leads, followed by NerdWallet, Reddit, The Wall Street Journal and Bankrate.
- Health and Medical: Healthline leads, followed by Forbes, Reddit, HearingTracker and Consumer Reports.
A platform-wide ChatGPT ranking is therefore useful for strategic orientation, but category-specific source analysis remains necessary for actual outreach planning.
ChatGPT Does Not Use the Same Top 100 as Google AI Search
The broader LLMAI cross-platform analysis shows that ChatGPT's source ecosystem is materially different from Google's AI search surfaces.
| Platform comparison | Shared Top 100 domains | Jaccard similarity |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT vs. Google AI Overviews | 54 | 37.0% |
| ChatGPT vs. Google AI Mode | 53 | 36.1% |
This is why an AI-search earned-media strategy based solely on Google AI Overviews can miss important ChatGPT sources, and vice versa.

Month-to-Month Persistence in ChatGPT
| Month comparison | Shared Top 100 domains | Jaccard similarity |
|---|---|---|
| July vs. August | 59 | 41.8% |
| July vs. September | 56 | 38.9% |
| August vs. September | 76 | 61.3% |
Only 49 domains remained in the ChatGPT Top 100 in all three months.
This is much lower monthly persistence than the two Google search surfaces in the same LLMAI research program. It should not automatically be attributed to model instability. The study measures visible citation output, and month-to-month movement can reflect changes in retrieval, source indexes, prompt composition, platform behavior, publisher content and the collection system.

How This Study Relates to Other ChatGPT Citation Research
Ahrefs: broad all-topic ChatGPT queries
Ahrefs' September 2026 all-topic U.S. ChatGPT study ranks Reddit #1 with 16.8% mention share, followed by Wikipedia, Consumer Reports, Forbes and EngineerFix. NerdWallet ranks #28. Ahrefs ChatGPT study
The LLMAI panel instead ranks Forbes #1 and NerdWallet #2 because it intentionally overweights consequential commercial questions rather than the average web topic. The denominator also differs: LLMAI uses response-level citation coverage as its primary metric, while Ahrefs reports mention share among leading sources.
BrightEdge: ChatGPT differs sharply by sensitive category
BrightEdge's August 2026 comparison of ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews found that ChatGPT's top healthcare sources were dominated by government agencies and hospital systems, while Google AI Overviews placed YouTube first in the same category. BrightEdge also found a flatter top-five source distribution for ChatGPT finance than for Google AI Overviews. BrightEdge health and finance study
That work is important prior research because it reinforces two principles used here: category choice materially changes the source list, and one engine's source hierarchy should not be projected onto another.
Our Health and Medical panel includes commercial provider and product decisions such as hearing aids, dental implants, online pharmacies, online therapy, medical alert systems, fertility services and weight-loss programs. That is a different prompt population from a clinical-healthcare prompt set, which helps explain why Healthline, Forbes and commercial specialist sources appear prominently here.
Foglift: Buyer-Intent Source Types Vary by Engine
Foglift's Q2 2026 content-type study used 75 buyer-intent prompts across five engines. In the classified subset of its ChatGPT citations, 68.0% were vendor first-party sources, while Foglift observed no community-discussion citations in that ChatGPT sample. Foglift citation content-type study
That result is not directly comparable with the LLMAI domain leaderboard. Foglift classified 150 of 246 ChatGPT citations in a 75-response sample and reports source-type composition, while LLMAI ranks registrable domains by response-level presence across thousands of high-stakes responses. The useful agreement is methodological: source behavior changes materially by engine and prompt population, and owned content can be an important part of a ChatGPT visibility program alongside third-party sources.
BrightEdge: A Fixed ChatGPT Panel Shows How Fast a Major Source Can Disappear
BrightEdge tracked a fixed weekly panel of U.S. Education prompts in ChatGPT and reported Reddit citation presence falling from 17.2% to 3.3% and then to 0% across two weeks in August 2026. BrightEdge notes that the break coincided with Reddit's robots.txt access change and explicitly treats that timing as corroboration rather than proof of causation. BrightEdge Reddit and ChatGPT study
The category is different from the LLMAI high-stakes commercial panel, but the operating lesson is directly relevant: third-party source visibility can change because of access and retrieval conditions even when the publisher's underlying content has not materially changed.
That makes recurring source monitoring commercially necessary. A publisher relationship or historical citation pattern should not be treated as permanent infrastructure.
Machine Relations: a different query basket can produce a very different Reddit result
Machine Relations' September 23 index report says Reddit was not observed as a ChatGPT citation in its 130-day public index window, even though Reddit was the most-cited domain across its six-engine corpus. Machine Relations September 23 report
LLMAI does observe Reddit in its captured ChatGPT corpus. That difference should not be treated as proof that either dataset is wrong. The studies use different monitored queries, collection systems, time windows and potentially different ChatGPT surfaces. It is a useful example of why AI citation percentages and even source presence should be interpreted inside the collection contract that produced them.

How the LLM Authority Index ChatGPT Study Is Different
The LLMAI study combines:
- high-stakes commercial decision prompts;
- 53 source vertical labels;
- four major consequential consumer decision families;
- three months of observations;
- response-level domain presence as the primary ranking metric;
- raw citation events reported separately;
- registrable-domain normalization;
- explicit extraction-failure accounting;
- cross-vertical exact-repeat handling; and
- direct comparison with five other public AI platform families built from the same research program.
Why ChatGPT Citation Studies Can Disagree
ChatGPT citation research is especially sensitive to collection design.
Results can differ because of:
- ChatGPT product surface and account state;
- web-search or retrieval behavior available at collection time;
- geography;
- model or routing changes;
- commercial versus informational prompts;
- prompt category mix;
- response-level presence versus citation-event share;
- domain normalization;
- treatment of platform-owned pages;
- treatment of no-citation responses and extraction failures; and
- exact collection dates.
Absolute percentages from different providers should therefore not be treated as estimates of one universal ChatGPT citation share.
What the Results Mean for Publishers
A publisher can use this research to document:
- ChatGPT response-level citation coverage;
- category and vertical breadth;
- monthly persistence;
- citation-event volume; and
- cross-platform source visibility.
Forbes, NerdWallet, The Wall Street Journal, Bankrate, Money.com and several specialist publishers have measurable commercial value in this high-stakes ChatGPT source ecosystem. The defensible claim is visibility, not causation.
Our domain appears frequently among the visible sources ChatGPT cites when answering high-stakes consumer questions in this market.
What the Results Mean for CMOs and Brands
For brands, the ChatGPT Top 100 is most useful when layered with category data.
A practical workflow is:
- identify publishers with strong ChatGPT visibility;
- narrow to publishers strong in the brand's category and exact vertical;
- compare those publishers with Google AI Overviews and AI Mode;
- separate independent media from company-owned, government, nonprofit, community and platform-owned sources; and
- track movement over time rather than relying on a single snapshot.
The category studies provide the broader commercial context:

Methodology
Research source
This analysis uses the frozen LLMAI citation archive and the same cleaning framework as the flagship study.
Unit of observation
The unit is one captured ChatGPT response associated with a prompt and month.
Explicit extraction failures
The archive contains 144 July-September ChatGPT observations explicitly marked as extraction failures. Those records are excluded from valid-response analysis rather than interpreted as true zero-citation responses.
Exact-repeat handling
For the corpus-wide platform ranking, observations with the same month, raw source surface, normalized prompt and exact citation URL set are counted once.
Prompt normalization
Prompt matching uses Unicode NFKC normalization, case folding, whitespace collapse and trimming.
Domain normalization
Citation URLs are consolidated to registrable domains using public-suffix logic. Raw URLs and hosts remain preserved in the archive.
Response citation coverage
A domain counts at most once per response for the primary ranking.
response citation coverage = eligible ChatGPT responses citing domain / all eligible ChatGPT responses
Citation events
Raw citation-event counts are reported separately because one answer can cite several URLs from the same domain.
Platform-owned sources
Substantive platform-owned pages, including OpenAI-owned sources when actually surfaced as citations, are not automatically removed solely because the platform owns them. They should be interpreted separately from independent publisher citations.
No causal interpretation
Citation is an observed source relationship. It does not prove that the source caused a brand to be mentioned or recommended.
Limitations
- This study measures visible citations, not hidden training or retrieval data.
- The prompt universe is intentionally commercial and high stakes.
- ChatGPT product routing and web retrieval can change over time.
- The collection window is three months.
- The platform sample is not intended to represent every ChatGPT user session or geography.
- Domain-level rankings can hide page-level turnover.
- Some vertical exports contain adjacent prompts, which is why narrow conclusions should be tied to prompt-level review where necessary.
- Citation does not equal recommendation or causation.
- External ChatGPT studies can differ materially because the collection surface itself may differ.
