LLM Authority Index Research | High-Stakes Consumer Decisions | Insurance | Perplexity | July-September 2026
Reddit's direct citation visibility in Perplexity fell to zero at the September endpoint of this high-stakes insurance decision panel.
On the balanced set of nine insurance verticals measured in both July and September 2026, Reddit's share of visible Perplexity citation events fell from 2.14% to 0.00%, a 100% relative decline. The percentage of eligible Perplexity responses containing at least one Reddit citation fell from 4.12% to 0.00%, also a 100% decline.
A stricter matched-prompt test points in the same direction. Across 140 exact prompt-plus-Perplexity scenarios observed in both endpoint months, 6 scenarios lost Reddit, 0 gained Reddit, 0 retained Reddit and 134 cited Reddit in neither month.
Matched Reddit response coverage therefore fell from 4.29% to 0.00%.
For the six discordant matched pairs, the exact two-sided McNemar result is p = 0.03125.
The September endpoint does not mean Reddit was absent from Perplexity insurance answers throughout the entire quarter. Across the full three-month Perplexity insurance source study, Reddit was cited in 36 of 1,422 eligible responses, or 2.53%, and generated 38 of 2,459 substantive public-facing citation events, approximately 1.55% of the cleaned citation pool.
Reddit ranked #14 overall across the full three-month Perplexity insurance source market. Its monthly position moved from #11 in July to #9 in August and then #61 in September.
That combination is strategically important. A quarter-wide leaderboard can still show Reddit as a meaningful source even when the most recent endpoint has fallen to zero in the balanced panel.
Important: This study measures visible citations in a defined high-stakes insurance prompt panel. It does not measure hidden model training data, private retrieval signals or recommendation causality. A visible citation does not prove that the cited source caused an insurer, broker, policy or publisher to be recommended.

Answer Capsule
Did Reddit lose citation visibility in Perplexity for high-stakes insurance decisions from July to September 2026? Yes. On the balanced nine-vertical insurance panel, Reddit's Perplexity citation-event share fell from 2.14% to 0.00%, while response citation coverage fell from 4.12% to 0.00%. In the strict matched test, 6 of 140 scenarios lost Reddit and 0 gained it, moving matched coverage from 4.29% to 0.00%. The exact McNemar result is p = 0.03125. Reddit still ranked #14 across the full three-month Perplexity insurance source market, but its monthly rank fell from #11 in July to #61 in September.
Key Findings

- The strict matched Perplexity panel contained 140 exact prompt-plus-platform scenarios.
- Matched outcomes: 6 losses, 0 gains, 0 persistent Reddit citations and 134 neither-month scenarios.
- Matched Reddit response coverage fell from 4.29% to 0.00%.
- The exact two-sided McNemar result is p = 0.03125.
- Across the full three-month Perplexity insurance slice, Reddit was cited in 36 of 1,422 responses, or 2.53%.
- Reddit generated 38 of 2,459 substantive public-facing citation events, approximately 1.55%.
- Reddit ranked #14 overall across the three-month Perplexity insurance source market.
- Reddit's monthly rank moved #11 in July, #9 in August and #61 in September.
- The Perplexity insurance source market contained 333 registrable cited domains and 2,318 domain-response appearances.
- 203 Perplexity thumbnail-infrastructure citation entries were excluded from the public publisher ranking.
- The full insurance family contains 12 source labels, while the balanced July-to-September endpoint uses 9 because Long-Term Care Insurance, Renters Insurance and Vision Insurance were not present in the July source corpus.
- Perplexity's insurance Reddit decline was sharper than the all-platform insurance decline and sharper than the declines measured on Google's AI surfaces.
- Broad all-topic Perplexity studies can still rank Reddit as a leading source while this narrower insurance decision panel shows a complete September endpoint loss.

Questions This Study Answers
- Did Reddit's direct citation role in Perplexity weaken for high-stakes insurance decisions?
- Does the decline survive a strict comparison of the same prompts at both endpoints?
- How can Reddit rank highly in broad Perplexity research while falling to zero in a narrower insurance panel?
Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions
Article 58 isolates one source, Reddit, inside one platform, Perplexity, and one commercial decision family, Insurance. That narrow design makes the study useful for day-to-day AI search marketing because it separates measurements that can tell very different stories.
- Where did Reddit rank across the full three-month Perplexity insurance source market?
- What happened at the latest balanced endpoint?
- Did the same prompts confirm the same directional change?
Across the three-month Perplexity Insurance source study, Reddit still ranked #14 overall at 2.53% response citation coverage. Its monthly position moved #11 in July, #9 in August and #61 in September.
The balanced nine-vertical endpoint shows a much sharper current-state break. Reddit citation-event share fell from 2.14% to 0.00%, down 100%, while response citation coverage fell from 4.12% to 0.00%, also down 100%.
The strict matched panel points in the same direction. Across 140 exact prompt-plus-Perplexity scenarios, Reddit produced 6 losses, 0 gains, 0 persistent citations and 134 neither-month scenarios. Matched coverage fell from 4.29% to 0.00%, and the exact two-sided McNemar result is p = 0.03125.
For publishers, this means a quarter-wide rank should not be presented as proof that current visibility is stable. For carriers, brokers, comparison sites and CMOs, it means Perplexity source strategy should be monitored with a fixed prompt panel and separate measures for current rank, response coverage, citation-event share, matched persistence and source-market turnover.
The surrounding Perplexity insurance source market is highly concentrated but not highly persistent. Its Top 100 account for 84.0% of domain-response appearances, and the Top 10 account for 44.8%, yet only 42 domains remained in all three monthly Top 100s and median monthly Top 100 Jaccard similarity was only 34.2%.
That broader source rotation does not erase the Reddit result. All six matched July Reddit-positive scenarios lost Reddit by September, none gained it, and the monthly rank fell from #11 to #61 between July and September. The evidence supports a Reddit-specific loss occurring inside a Perplexity insurance source market that was already rotating substantially.
Category specialization is equally important. Only 38 of Perplexity's Insurance Top 100 domains also appear in Perplexity's broader High-Stakes Consumer Decisions Top 100. The final Insurance child-study Top 100 lists show Perplexity sharing 59 domains with Google AI Overviews, 59 with Google AI Mode, 43 with ChatGPT, 43 with Gemini and 33 with Microsoft Copilot.
The broader Insurance Citation Authority Study reports 80.2% median monthly Top 100 persistence, 29.0% median cross-platform Top 100 portability, and an approximate 51.2 percentage-point Persistence-Portability Gap. It also reports 16 domains appearing in the Insurance Top 100 for all six platform families.
The Persistence-Portability Gap framework helps interpret Article 58 correctly: Insurance source authority was highly persistent at the family level but much less transferable across engines, while Perplexity's own monthly Insurance source market rotated much more rapidly. Article 58 should not manufacture a Perplexity-specific gap by subtracting 34.2% temporal persistence from a single pairwise platform overlap because those comparison structures are different.
Perplexity also requires source-surface cleanup. The source study excludes 203 thumbnail-infrastructure citation entries from d2u1z1lopyfwlx.cloudfront.net, about 7.6% of the captured citation entries after exact-repeat handling. Those utility URLs should not be interpreted as publisher authority.
Citation visibility should remain separate from brand mentions, recommendation rate, rank, sentiment, citation-recommendation coupling and downstream business outcomes. A visible Reddit citation does not prove that Reddit caused Perplexity to recommend a carrier, broker, policy, publisher or comparison service.
Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings
| Research finding | What insurance publishers can responsibly do or say | What carriers, brokers and CMOs can reasonably do |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit ranked #14 across the three-month Perplexity Insurance source study but fell to #61 in September | "Reddit remained a meaningful aggregate source, but its current Perplexity Insurance visibility weakened sharply." | Report quarter-wide authority and current-month visibility separately. |
| Balanced event share and response coverage both fell to zero | "Both direct Reddit citation metrics reached zero on the same nine-vertical endpoint." | Maintain a fixed Perplexity insurance prompt panel and track both metrics monthly. |
| The strict matched set produced 6 losses and 0 gains | "The decline survives a same-prompt, same-surface comparison." | Add matched loss/gain reporting instead of relying only on rank or share-of-voice snapshots. |
| Exact McNemar p is 0.03125 | "The loss-only matched pattern is statistically detectable in this sample." | Treat the result as evidence of directional change, while keeping the small absolute discordant count visible. |
| The Top 100 capture 84.0% of appearances but median monthly persistence is only 34.2% | "Perplexity's Insurance source market is concentrated but rotates materially." | Refresh source-priority lists on a fixed cadence rather than assuming a concentrated market is stable. |
| Only 38 Insurance Top 100 domains also appear in broad Perplexity's Top 100 | "Insurance authority can be category-specific rather than platform-wide." | Use Insurance-specific source maps for PR, partnerships and earned-media planning. |
| Perplexity shares 59 Insurance Top 100 domains with each Google AI surface but only 33 with Copilot | "Source portability varies materially by engine pair." | Maintain a shared cross-platform core plus Perplexity-specific and engine-specific priorities. |
| The Insurance family shows 80.2% persistence but only 29.0% portability | "Insurance source authority is much more durable over time than transferable across engines." | Separate source-specific drift, platform-category churn, family persistence and cross-platform portability. |
| The parent replacement analysis is multi-platform | "No evidence here supports naming one publisher as the Perplexity-only replacement for Reddit." | Diversify source strategy instead of moving effort to one assumed replacement domain. |
| Citation visibility is not recommendation causality | "This study measures visible source presence, not endorsement." | Track citations separately from mentions, recommendations, rank, sentiment and conversion outcomes. |

Where Article 58 Fits in the High-Stakes Consumer Decisions Corpus
Article 58 is a child analysis of two parent studies:
- the Insurance Reddit decline study, which provides the balanced family endpoint, cross-platform comparison and broader replacement analysis; and
- the Perplexity Insurance source study, which provides the surrounding three-month source market, including Reddit's #14 aggregate rank and 2.53% response coverage, 42 domains present in all three monthly Top 100s and 34.2% median monthly Top 100 persistence.
The platform-level context comes from the overall Perplexity Top 100 study. The broader interpretation comes from the 2026 AI Citation Authority Study, the overall Reddit decline study, the cross-platform citation-overlap study, the citation-drift study, and the Persistence-Portability Gap framework. Those studies answer different questions and should not be collapsed into one visibility score.
The Core Finding: Reddit Fell From 2.14% Event Share to Zero
Questions This Section Answers
- How large was the July-to-September decline after holding the insurance vertical set constant?
- Did both event share and response coverage reach zero?
- Could September-only insurance verticals explain the result?
The primary endpoint comparison uses the nine insurance verticals represented in both July and September 2026.
| Metric | July 2026 | September 2026 | Relative change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reddit share of Perplexity citation events | 2.14% | 0.00% | -100.0% |
| Perplexity responses citing Reddit | 4.12% | 0.00% | -100.0% |
Both measures reach zero at the September balanced endpoint.
Citation-event share asks what portion of all eligible public citation occurrences belonged to Reddit. Response citation coverage asks what percentage of eligible Perplexity answers cited Reddit at least once.
The result is not caused by treating missing July categories as zero.
Long-Term Care Insurance, Renters Insurance and Vision Insurance appear later in the quarter but do not have July source datasets in the frozen corpus. They are excluded from the balanced endpoint.
After excluding those three labels, Reddit still falls from measurable July visibility to no captured September citations.

The Strict Matched Test Found Six Reddit Losses and Zero Gains
Questions This Section Answers
- Did Reddit decline when the exact prompt and platform were held constant?
- How many matched scenarios gained Reddit by September?
- Is the loss-gain imbalance statistically distinguishable from a symmetric pattern?
The strict matched analysis is narrower than the balanced aggregate test.
A scenario qualifies only when the same normalized prompt on the same Perplexity surface has one eligible analytical observation in July and one in September under the project's matching rules.
140 scenarios met that contract.
| July Reddit citation | September Reddit citation | Matched scenarios |
|---|---|---|
| Yes | Yes | 0 |
| Yes | No | 6 |
| No | Yes | 0 |
| No | No | 134 |
| Total | 140 |
Matched Reddit response coverage moved from 6 / 140 = 4.29% in July to 0 / 140 = 0.00% in September.
All six July Reddit-positive matched scenarios became Reddit-negative by September.
No matched scenario gained Reddit.
For the six discordant pairs, the exact two-sided McNemar result is p = 0.03125.
The matched count is modest, so the result should be interpreted with the absolute counts visible. But the paired direction is unambiguous inside this frozen subset: every matched Reddit-positive July scenario lost Reddit by September.
The Three-Month Aggregate Still Shows Reddit as a Meaningful Perplexity Insurance Source
Questions This Section Answers
- Did Reddit disappear from Perplexity insurance answers for the entire quarter?
- How important was Reddit in the pooled three-month source market?
- Why can a three-month average obscure the latest endpoint?
The full Perplexity insurance source study looks materially different from the September endpoint.
| Three-month Perplexity insurance metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Eligible deduplicated responses | 1,422 |
| Substantive public-facing citation events | 2,459 |
| Registrable cited domains | 333 |
| Domain-response appearances | 2,318 |
| Reddit-citing responses | 36 |
| Reddit response coverage | 2.53% |
| Reddit citation events | 38 |
| Reddit event share | 1.55% |
| Reddit overall rank | #14 |
| Reddit insurance vertical breadth | 9 source labels |
| Thumbnail-infrastructure entries excluded | 203 |
Reddit was not a dominant source across the quarter, but it was clearly present.
It ranked #14 overall by three-month response citation coverage.
The monthly sequence shows the break more clearly:
| Month | Reddit rank in Perplexity insurance source market |
|---|---|
| July 2026 | #11 |
| August 2026 | #9 |
| September 2026 | #61 |
Reddit actually improved in rank between July and August before collapsing in September.
That is one reason quarter-wide averages should not be used as a substitute for current-state measurement. The quarter aggregate is accurate, but it blends together materially different monthly source behavior.

Reddit Fell Inside a Large, Active Perplexity Insurance Source Market
Questions This Section Answers
- Was the Reddit decline simply caused by Perplexity citing very few insurance sources?
- Which domains led the broader insurance source market?
- Did financial and insurance specialist publishers remain active?
Perplexity continued to cite a broad source universe.
The three-month insurance slice contained 333 registrable cited domains and 2,459 substantive public-facing citation events after technical filtering.
The leading sources were:
| Rank | Domain | Response citation coverage |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | nerdwallet.com | 14.77% |
| 2 | forbes.com | 12.03% |
| 3 | money.com | 9.42% |
| 4 | investopedia.com | 7.24% |
| 5 | moneygeek.com | 5.91% |
| 6 | valuepenguin.com | 5.91% |
| 7 | squaremouth.com | 5.27% |
| 8 | usnews.com | 4.64% |
| 9 | marketwatch.com | 4.64% |
| 10 | yahoo.com | 3.23% |
| 14 | reddit.com | 2.53% |
The market therefore did not become citation-poor when Reddit declined.
Perplexity continued to surface broad financial publishers, general business media, insurance comparison sites and specialist publishers.
The data supports a conclusion of source redistribution, not a conclusion that Perplexity stopped grounding insurance answers in third-party sources.
Perplexity Requires Thumbnail-Infrastructure Cleanup
Questions This Section Answers
- Why are raw Perplexity citation exports not sufficient for publisher analysis?
- How many technical entries were removed?
- Does infrastructure filtering explain Reddit's decline?
The Perplexity insurance slice contained 2,662 captured citation entries after exact-repeat handling.
Of those, 203 entries pointed to Perplexity thumbnail infrastructure at:
d2u1z1lopyfwlx.cloudfront.net
Those entries were excluded from the public publisher ranking.
After filtering, 2,459 substantive public-facing citation events remained.
The excluded technical layer represents roughly 7.6% of the captured citation entries remaining after exact-repeat handling.
This technical cleanup is important for source-market accuracy, but it does not explain the Reddit decline.
The same public-source filtering contract is applied when constructing the July and September Reddit metrics. Reddit falls from a measurable July baseline to zero even after the publisher layer is cleaned consistently.

Perplexity's Insurance Reddit Decline Was More Severe Than on Google
Questions This Section Answers
- Did Reddit decline equally across insurance AI platforms?
- Which platforms had the strongest losses?
- Why should insurance teams avoid a blended AI source score?
The parent insurance study shows materially different platform behavior.
| Platform | July Reddit event share | September Reddit event share | Relative change | Matched losses | Matched gains |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | 2.14% | 0.00% | -100.0% | 6 | 0 |
| ChatGPT | 7.48% | 2.31% | -69.1% | 22 | 4 |
| Gemini | 3.15% | 1.39% | -56.1% | 9 | 3 |
| Google AI Overviews | 3.36% | 2.25% | -33.1% | 49 | 25 |
| Google AI Mode | 3.18% | 2.13% | -33.1% | 38 | 21 |
| Microsoft Copilot | 0.00% | 0.00% | N/A | 0 | 0 |
Perplexity has the steepest relative endpoint decline because its September balanced endpoint reaches zero.
ChatGPT also shows a strong directional loss pattern, but its September endpoint remains above zero.
Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode decline more gradually.
A single blended insurance Reddit metric would hide these differences.
For insurers, brokers, comparison publishers and agencies, source measurement should therefore be tracked separately by AI platform.
What Appeared When Reddit Disappeared?
Questions This Section Answers
- Did one publisher consistently replace Reddit?
- Can the six Perplexity losses be attributed to one source?
- What can the broader insurance replacement analysis tell us?
This child article does not claim that one domain replaced Reddit in the six matched Perplexity loss scenarios.
The parent insurance study examined 124 Reddit-loss scenarios across all tracked platforms and found multiple newly appearing September sources.
The most common were:
| Newly appearing September domain | Reddit-loss scenarios | Share of all-platform insurance Reddit-loss scenarios |
|---|---|---|
| forbes.com | 30 | 24.2% |
| money.com | 23 | 18.5% |
| youtube.com | 13 | 10.5% |
| nerdwallet.com | 13 | 10.5% |
| wsj.com | 11 | 8.9% |
| insurify.com | 9 | 7.3% |
| americanvisitorinsurance.com | 9 | 7.3% |
| cnbc.com | 8 | 6.5% |
| nytimes.com | 7 | 5.6% |
| worldnomads.com | 7 | 5.6% |
| allianztravelinsurance.com | 7 | 5.6% |
Those results come from the all-platform insurance matched-loss population, not the six Perplexity losses alone.
They support a broader source-redistribution interpretation, but they should not be re-labeled as a Perplexity-specific replacement table.
The Perplexity-specific evidence is narrower: all six matched July Reddit-positive scenarios lost Reddit, none gained it, and the broader source market remained active across hundreds of domains.

Which Insurance Verticals Are Represented?
The full Perplexity Insurance source study contains 12 source labels:
- Car Insurance
- Dental Insurance
- Disability Insurance
- Health Insurance
- Life Insurance Companies
- Long-Term Care Insurance
- Medicare Supplement Insurance
- Pet Insurance
- Renters Insurance
- Short Term Health Insurance
- Travel Insurance
- Vision Insurance
The balanced July-to-September endpoint uses nine of those source verticals.
The three labels without July source data are:
- Long-Term Care Insurance
- Renters Insurance
- Vision Insurance
Those missing July source datasets are not treated as measured zeros.
The three-month Perplexity source ranking shows Reddit appearing across nine insurance source labels.
Why Broad Perplexity Research Can Still Rank Reddit #1
Questions This Section Answers
- Does the insurance result contradict broad September Perplexity studies?
- Why can Reddit rank #1 broadly but only #14 in insurance?
- Which denominator differences matter most?
Ahrefs' September 2026 Perplexity study analyzes more than 3.1 million U.S. queries spanning all topics.
It ranks Reddit #1 with 21.6% mention share, followed by YouTube at 20.8% and Wikipedia.
This Perplexity insurance study ranks Reddit #14 with 2.53% response citation coverage across the full three-month source market, and the balanced September endpoint reaches 0.00% response coverage.
Those findings do not conflict.
The studies differ in several important ways:
- Query population. Ahrefs measures all-topic U.S. queries. This study isolates consequential insurance decisions.
- Metric. Ahrefs reports mention share under its own ranking framework. This study reports response citation coverage and citation-event share.
- Time window. The insurance source ranking pools July through September, while the endpoint analysis compares July and September directly.
- Category specialization. Insurance prompts disproportionately surface finance and insurance specialists such as NerdWallet, Money.com, MoneyGeek, ValuePenguin and Squaremouth.
The commercial lesson is that broad Perplexity source rankings should not be treated as universal category rankings.

Tinuiti Also Identified Perplexity as an Exception in Social Citation Trends
Tinuiti's Q3 2026 AI Citation Trends Report tracked citation behavior across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.
Tinuiti reported that most tracked AI platforms were at or near Q3 highs in social citation share, with Perplexity as a notable exception.
Tinuiti's category mix differs substantially from this study, and its metric is broader than Reddit alone.
The comparison is therefore directional, not numerical.
It reinforces the methodological conclusion that social-source behavior varies by platform and category.

What This Means for Insurance Brands and CMOs
Questions This Section Answers
- Should an insurer rely on Reddit as a Perplexity citation strategy?
- Which source surfaces appear more durable in this platform?
- What should insurance teams monitor next?
1. Treat Reddit as a volatile Perplexity citation surface
Reddit remained relevant across the three-month pooled sample, but it fell to zero at the balanced September endpoint.
That makes direct Reddit citation visibility too volatile to treat as a fixed Perplexity assumption.
2. Build visibility across the publishers Perplexity repeatedly cites
NerdWallet, Forbes, Money.com, Investopedia, MoneyGeek, ValuePenguin, Squaremouth, U.S. News and MarketWatch all have stronger measured three-month Perplexity insurance coverage than Reddit.
3. Use product-specific source maps
Insurance is not one source ecosystem.
Travel Insurance, Pet Insurance, Life Insurance, Car Insurance, Medicare Supplement and other verticals can have very different specialist publishers.
Squaremouth, for example, reaches 25.8% response coverage in Travel Insurance even though it ranks only #7 across the entire insurance family.
4. Re-measure monthly
Reddit's rank moved from #11 to #9 to #61 in one quarter.
That is too much movement to treat a single source audit as durable.
5. Separate citations from recommendations
A Reddit citation disappearing does not prove that an insurer loses recommendation visibility.
Track source citations, company mentions, recommendation rate, comparison inclusion, sentiment and owned-domain citations as separate variables.
Want the full Authority Index
The paid deep-dive adds competitor threat profiles, the gap matrix, citation failure map, platform-by-platform recovery roadmap, and client-specific economic modeling.
What This Means for Insurance Publishers
The Perplexity insurance source market is strongly category-specific.
Only 38 of the insurance Top 100 also appear in Perplexity's broader High-Stakes Top 100.
That means insurance publishers should not judge opportunity only by broad platform leaderboards.
Useful publisher metrics include:
- response citation coverage by insurance vertical;
- citation events by commercial prompt cluster;
- monthly rank persistence;
- URL-level citation recurrence;
- category lift versus Perplexity overall;
- cross-platform coverage; and
- whether publisher citation visibility moves alongside insurer recommendation visibility.
The right claim is measured source visibility in a defined insurance decision environment, not Perplexity trust or recommendation causality.
How This Study Relates to the Parent Insurance Reddit Study
The parent insurance study found that Reddit's balanced all-platform citation-event share fell from 3.36% to 1.92%, a 43.0% decline.
Balanced response citation coverage fell from 11.53% to 6.80%, down 41.0%.
Perplexity was substantially more severe.
Its balanced event share fell from 2.14% to 0.00%, and response coverage fell from 4.12% to 0.00%.
The all-platform matched study found 124 Reddit losses and 53 gains.
Perplexity contributed 6 losses and 0 gains across its 140 matched scenarios.
This is why platform-specific child studies matter. The parent result accurately describes the combined insurance AI environment, while the Perplexity child study reveals a much sharper platform-specific break.
How This Study Is Different
This article narrows the broader insurance Reddit research to one platform, one high-stakes family and one three-month research period.
It combines:
- a 1,422-response Perplexity insurance source slice;
- a balanced nine-vertical July-to-September endpoint;
- a 140-scenario exact matched prompt-plus-Perplexity test;
- both citation-event share and response citation coverage;
- a three-month source market containing 333 registrable cited domains;
- monthly Reddit rank movement from #11 to #9 to #61;
- explicit treatment of 203 Perplexity thumbnail-infrastructure entries;
- comparison with broad all-topic Perplexity research; and
- comparison with Tinuiti's platform-specific social citation findings.
The narrow research question is:
How stable was Reddit as a directly cited source in Perplexity for consequential insurance consumer decisions from July through September 2026?

Why AI Citation Studies Can Disagree
Questions This Section Answers
- Why can one study rank Reddit first while another shows zero September insurance coverage?
- Which methodological choices can change the result most?
- What should insurers compare before using an external benchmark?
Different AI citation studies can produce different Reddit results without either study necessarily being wrong.
Query population
Broad informational and all-topic prompts produce a different source mix from high-intent insurance comparison and decision prompts.
Time period
A pooled three-month source study and a July-to-September endpoint analysis answer different questions.
Denominator
Citation-event share, response citation coverage and mention share are not interchangeable.
Category composition
The balanced endpoint excludes Long-Term Care Insurance, Renters Insurance and Vision Insurance because they do not have July source datasets.
Missing versus zero
Missing July data is not converted into zero visibility.
Technical-source cleanup
Perplexity thumbnail infrastructure is excluded from publisher analysis so technical endpoints do not inflate the source denominator.
Prompt matching
The strict matched panel requires the same normalized prompt and Perplexity surface at both endpoints.
Prompt weighting
The panel is not weighted by insurance premium volume, policy count, CPC, search volume, revenue, lead value or conversion probability.
The useful question is therefore not "What is Reddit's universal Perplexity citation rate?"
The useful question is:
What did Reddit citation visibility look like for this platform, this insurance decision population, this time period and this denominator?
Methodology
Source archive
This study uses the frozen July-September 2026 LLM Authority Index High-Stakes Consumer Decisions corpus underlying the insurance source studies and the parent insurance Reddit decline analysis.
Platform filter
Only observations assigned to the Perplexity platform family are included.
Category filter
Observations are included when their source membership belongs to the Insurance family.
Raw and screened Perplexity insurance sample
The related source study reports:
- 1,515 raw July-September Perplexity insurance observations
- 7 explicit extraction failures
- 1,422 eligible deduplicated responses
- 2,827 raw citation-array entries
- 2,662 captured citation entries after exact-repeat handling
- 203 thumbnail-infrastructure exclusions
- 2,459 substantive public-facing citation events
- 333 registrable cited domains
- 2,318 domain-response appearances
Extraction failures
Observations explicitly marked as extraction failures are excluded from eligible response denominators.
Exact analytical repeat handling
Exact analytical repeats are controlled using the project's documented repeat logic so duplicate records do not inflate source coverage.
Prompt normalization
Matched prompt text is normalized using Unicode NFKC normalization, case folding, whitespace collapse and trimming.
Domain normalization
Citation URLs are parsed to hostname, lowercased, stripped of leading www where applicable and consolidated to registrable domain using Public Suffix List logic.
Reddit identification
Reddit is identified at the registrable-domain level as reddit.com.
Public technical exclusions
The Perplexity insurance public ranking excludes 203 citations to the platform's thumbnail infrastructure host.
Citation-event share
Reddit citation-event share = Reddit citation events / all eligible substantive public citation events
Response citation coverage
Reddit response citation coverage = eligible responses citing Reddit at least once / all eligible responses
Reddit counts no more than once per response for this metric.
Balanced endpoint
The July-to-September endpoint uses the nine insurance verticals represented in both endpoint months.
Long-Term Care Insurance, Renters Insurance and Vision Insurance are excluded because they do not have July source datasets in the frozen corpus.
Matched prompt-plus-platform test
The strict matched Perplexity panel contains 140 scenarios.
The contingency table is:
- both July and September cite Reddit: 0
- July cites Reddit, September does not: 6
- July does not cite Reddit, September cites Reddit: 0
- neither month cites Reddit: 134
Matched response coverage falls from 4.2857% to 0.00%.
The exact two-sided McNemar p-value is 0.03125.
Three-month source-market context
Across the full three-month Perplexity insurance source slice:
- Reddit appears in 36 responses
- Reddit response citation coverage is 2.53%
- Reddit generates 38 substantive citation events
- Reddit accounts for approximately 1.55% of substantive citation events
- Reddit spans 9 insurance source labels
- Reddit ranks #14 overall
- Reddit's monthly rank moves #11 → #9 → #61

Limitations
- The study covers one frozen three-month research window and should not be treated as a permanent Perplexity rule.
- The prompt panel is designed for research comparability and high-stakes commercial relevance, not search-volume-weighted market share.
- Visible citation does not prove recommendation causality, hidden retrieval influence or training-data use.
- The strict matched Perplexity panel contains only six discordant Reddit-positive July cases, so absolute counts should be reported with the statistical result.
- Three insurance source labels do not have July data and are excluded from the balanced endpoint.
- Three-month aggregate coverage can conceal major monthly movement.
- Domain-level aggregation hides page-level source differences.
- Technical-source filtering is necessary and can make denominators differ from raw citation exports.
- Perplexity behavior can vary by geography, personalization, model version, retrieval configuration and product rollout.
- The all-platform replacement table should not be interpreted as a Perplexity-only replacement analysis.
- External studies use different query populations, dates, markets, metrics and collection systems.
- Statistical significance measures the matched loss-gain imbalance. It does not identify why Reddit disappeared.
