A three-month citation-authority study across 12 insurance verticals, 3,966 deduplicated Google AI Mode responses, 30,280 visible citation events, and 2,245 cited registrable domains.
Google AI Mode does not use the same source market for insurance that it uses across high-stakes consumer decisions generally. In this panel, U.S. News, NerdWallet, Forbes, Money.com and Reddit lead the insurance ranking, while specialist insurance sources such as Insurify, Squaremouth, Humana, Pawlicy, InsureMyTrip, HealthcareInsider and Guardian Life gain materially when the analysis is restricted to insurance.
The result matters commercially because an AI-search outreach list built from a broad platform leaderboard can miss many of the sources that recur around a specific buying decision. Insurance narrows the relevant publisher and first-party source market considerably.
Answer Capsule
LLM Authority Index analyzed 3,966 deduplicated Google AI Mode responses across 12 insurance verticals from July through September 2026. U.S. News ranked #1 at 20.8% response citation coverage, narrowly ahead of NerdWallet at 20.7% and Forbes at 19.6%. The Top 100 captured 65.9% of domain-response appearances, compared with 46.6% in the broader Google AI Mode high-stakes study. 81 domains remained in the insurance Top 100 in all three months. The key commercial lesson is that insurance-specific AI Mode authority is meaningfully more concentrated than broad platform authority and includes a mix of broad publishers, insurance specialists, community sources and carrier-owned domains.
Key Findings
- usnews.com ranks #1 at 20.8% response coverage.
- The next four domains are nerdwallet.com (20.7%), forbes.com (19.6%), money.com (15.0%), and reddit.com (14.2%).
- The Top 100 account for 65.9% of domain-response appearances in this insurance slice, compared with 46.6% in the broader Google AI Mode high-stakes study.
- 81 domains stayed in this insurance Top 100 in all three months, compared with 83 in the broader Google AI Mode study.
- The insurance Top 100 shares 90 domains with the all-platform Insurance Top 100, but only 47 with the broader Google AI Mode Top 100.
- It shares 87 domains with the Google AI Overviews insurance Top 100, underscoring that platform choice changes the practical publisher opportunity set.
Additional findings:
- Google AI Mode produced 30,280 visible citation events in this insurance slice, or about 7.6 citation events per deduplicated response before response-level domain deduplication.
- The Top 10 domains account for 24.6% of domain-response appearances and 27.7% of visible citation events.
- U.S. News ranks first overall, but vertical leaders vary sharply. Insurify leads Car Insurance, Delta Dental leads Dental Insurance, Guardian Life leads Disability Insurance, Kaiser Permanente leads Health Insurance, NerdWallet leads Life Insurance, CNBC leads Long-Term Care Insurance, NerdWallet leads Medicare Supplement, U.S. News narrowly leads Pawlicy in Pet Insurance, U.S. News leads Renters Insurance, UnitedHealthcare leads Short Term Health Insurance, Squaremouth leads Travel Insurance, and Reddit leads Vision Insurance.
- Insurance and broad AI Mode rankings overlap by only 47 domains out of 100, even though the insurance slice is drawn from the same platform family.
- The Google AI Mode insurance and Google AI Overviews insurance Top 100 lists share 87 domains, a much higher overlap than either has with the platform-wide Top 100.

Questions This Study Answers
- Which websites does Google AI Mode cite most often for high-stakes insurance decisions?
- How concentrated is the insurance citation source market inside Google AI Mode?
- Which publishers gain the most when analysis is restricted to insurance rather than all high-stakes topics?
- Which domains lead Car Insurance, Life Insurance, Pet Insurance, Travel Insurance, Medicare Supplement and the other insurance verticals?
- How stable was the Google AI Mode insurance Top 100 from July through September 2026?
- How much does the insurance Top 100 overlap with Google AI Mode's broader source universe?
- How similar are Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews when the prompt family is held to insurance?
- What do the results imply for publishers, carriers, brokers, comparison sites and CMOs trying to improve AI citation visibility?
Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions
This study is research-based, but its purpose is commercial decision support.
This Article sits at the intersection of two commercially useful views of the same source market:
- the Google AI Mode platform view, which asks which sources recur across high-stakes decisions on one Google surface; and
- the Insurance category view, which asks which sources recur across six AI platforms for one insurance decision family.
For publishers, that intersection creates a more precise commercial claim than simply saying a site is "visible in AI." A publisher can document whether its visibility is strong specifically inside Google AI Mode for insurance decisions, whether that visibility persists over time, and whether its authority is broad across several insurance products or concentrated in one specialist category.
For carriers, brokers, comparison sites, insurtechs and CMOs, the operating question is:
Which sources are already present around the exact insurance decisions our customers ask Google AI Mode to help them make?
Three findings matter for daily planning:
- the Top 100 account for 65.9% of domain-response appearances in this insurance AI Mode slice;
- 81 domains remained in the Top 100 in July, August and September; and
- the median of the three monthly Top 100 Jaccard comparisons was 75.4%.
That is a strong persistence signal for this platform-category intersection.
The final validated Insurance child studies show that the Google AI Mode insurance Top 100 shared 87 domains with Google AI Overviews, 59 with Perplexity, 55 with Gemini and 50 with ChatGPT. The Microsoft Copilot Insurance child file is currently corrupted and duplicates Gemini content, so this article does not use that child file to calculate an AI Mode vs. Copilot overlap.
The parent Insurance category study remains the authoritative six-platform summary. It reports 80.2% temporal persistence, 29.0% cross-platform portability, and an approximate 51.2 percentage-point Persistence-Portability Gap under the published summary-based methodology.
That category gap is exploratory. It is based on published category summary statistics, not a new platform-by-month controlled experiment.
The defensible commercial conclusion is:
Google AI Mode insurance authority is highly persistent over time, but it still does not transfer evenly to other AI engines, and the relevant source market changes again by insurance product.
Current outside research supports that narrower interpretation. Conductor's 2026 insurance benchmark reports that Google AI Mode produced 43.9% of the insurance citations in its seven-engine corpus and averaged 7.3 citations per answer. Conductor insurance benchmarks
Ahrefs' broad September 2026 U.S. AI Mode benchmark instead ranks Reddit, YouTube, Google, Facebook and Instagram as its five largest sources by mention share. Ahrefs Google AI Mode citations
Tinuiti's Q3 2026 research reports more than 13x growth in google.com's share of AI Mode citations during 2026 and notes increasing use of Google-owned surfaces such as Google Business Profiles and product cards. Tinuiti Q3 AI Citation Trends
Those studies use different prompt populations, denominators and source taxonomies. Their percentages should not be merged with this ranking. The useful agreement is structural: AI Mode source behavior changes by category, source role and measurement contract.
Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings
| Research finding | What insurance publishers can responsibly say | What carriers, brokers and CMOs can reasonably do |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. News, NerdWallet, Forbes, Money.com and Reddit lead this insurance Google AI Mode source map | "Our domain is measurably visible in Google AI Mode for high-stakes insurance decisions." | Use the category leaders as a strategic research tier, then evaluate fit for the exact insurance product and prompt cluster. |
| The Top 100 account for 65.9% of domain-response appearances | "Insurance AI Mode sourcing is meaningfully concentrated in this measured panel." | Start with the recurring high-authority source layer before expanding into specialists and the long tail. |
| 81 domains remained in the Top 100 across all three months | "Multi-month visibility is stronger evidence of durable AI Mode authority than a one-time screenshot." | Maintain a stable source-priority list and update it with current data rather than rebuilding it from scratch every month. |
| Median monthly Top 100 persistence is 75.4% | "The leading insurance AI Mode source portfolio was highly persistent during the study window." | Use persistence as a planning signal while still monitoring individual high-value prompts and verticals. |
| Google AI Mode shares 87 Insurance Top 100 domains with Google AI Overviews | "The two Google AI surfaces have unusually strong insurance source overlap." | Coordinate Google-focused publisher strategy while continuing to measure AI Mode and AI Overviews separately. |
| Google AI Mode shares 59 domains with Perplexity, 55 with Gemini and 50 with ChatGPT | "Strong insurance AI Mode authority does not establish equivalent authority on every AI engine." | Maintain platform-specific source maps rather than extending Google assumptions across the market. |
| The Insurance parent study reports a 51.2-point exploratory Persistence-Portability Gap | "Insurance source authority was much more persistent over time than portable across platforms in this panel." | Separate the time question from the platform question when deciding which publishers deserve ongoing investment. |
| The insurance AI Mode Top 100 shares only 47 domains with the overall Google AI Mode Top 100 | "Category-specific authority can be commercially meaningful even without broad platform-wide rank." | Use insurance-specific source maps instead of generic lists of sites AI Mode cites. |
| Insurify, Delta Dental, Guardian Life, Kaiser Permanente, Squaremouth and other specialists lead individual product decisions | "Our strongest authority may be product-specific rather than category-wide." | Build source strategy at the exact insurance-product and prompt-cluster level. |
| Carrier-owned domains recur alongside publishers and comparison sites | "First-party insurance content participates directly in the visible AI Mode source layer." | Audit product facts, pricing context, eligibility, coverage explanations and comparisons alongside earned-media opportunities. |
| External research shows rapidly increasing Google-owned source participation in AI Mode | "Independent publisher visibility should be distinguished from platform-owned source visibility." | Separate Google-owned surfaces from independent publishers and first-party insurance sites when prioritizing outreach and content work. |
| Citation visibility does not establish recommendation causality | "Our content is measurably present in the visible AI Mode source layer." | Use citation data to prioritize research, PR and content work, then separately measure mentions, recommendation rate, rank, sentiment and citation-recommendation coupling. |
The daily operating model is therefore four-layered:
- Durable insurance AI Mode core: maintain the sources that repeatedly matter across months.
- Product-specific layer: identify which sources dominate the exact insurance decision.
- Source-role layer: separate publishers, comparison sites, Google-owned surfaces, communities and first-party carrier domains.
- Cross-platform check: determine whether the same sources also matter in AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot.
Citation visibility is evidence of source presence. It is not proof that obtaining coverage, advertising, a partnership or a placement on a cited domain will cause Google AI Mode to recommend an insurer or product.

The Insurance AI Mode Source Market Is More Concentrated Than Broad Google AI Mode
| Top N domains | Share of domain-response appearances | Share of visible citation events |
|---|---|---|
| Top 10 | 24.6% | 27.7% |
| Top 25 | 37.7% | 42.3% |
| Top 50 | 51.8% | 58.2% |
| Top 100 | 65.9% | 70.9% |
The Top 100 capture 65.9% of response-level domain appearances in this insurance slice. In the broader Google AI Mode high-stakes study, the Top 100 capture 46.6%.
That difference is commercially meaningful. When marketers move from a broad AI Mode source universe to a defined insurance decision family, a smaller source set accounts for a much larger share of visible citation presence.
This section answers
- Is insurance more concentrated than Google AI Mode overall? Yes, within this panel.
- Does that mean only the Top 100 matter? No. The long tail remains material, especially inside narrow insurance verticals.
- Should brands use the broad AI Mode Top 100 as an outreach list? Not by itself. The overlap is only 47 domains.
Which Sources Gain the Most When the Analysis Is Restricted to Insurance?
The category-specific lift columns in the downloadable dataset compare each domain's insurance response coverage against its response coverage across all four high-stakes families within Google AI Mode.
Several clear specialist patterns emerge:
- Insurify reaches 7.5% in AI Mode insurance versus 1.8% across AI Mode's broader high-stakes panel, about 4.2 times the platform-wide rate.
- Humana reaches 6.9% in insurance versus 1.7% platform-wide.
- Squaremouth reaches 6.8% in insurance versus 1.6% platform-wide.
- MarketWatch reaches 12.3% in insurance versus 3.3% platform-wide, showing that category lift is not limited to insurance-only publishers.
- U.S. News reaches 20.8% in insurance versus 9.5% across broad AI Mode.
- Forbes is strong in both contexts, but its insurance lift is smaller because it already has broad platform authority.
This is why a category-specific ranking can be more useful for commercial outreach than a broad platform ranking. It identifies not only high-volume domains, but domains whose visibility is unusually concentrated around the category.

Broad Publisher Authority and Specialist Insurance Authority Are Different Assets
The overall Top 10 mixes broad publishers with highly commercial category-specific sources. That coexistence is important.
Broad publishers such as U.S. News, NerdWallet, Forbes, Money.com, Investopedia, MarketWatch and CNBC provide repeated category breadth. A brand may encounter them in many insurance products and multiple stages of a buying journey.
Specialist sources such as Insurify, Squaremouth, Pawlicy, InsureMyTrip and HealthcareInsider can be disproportionately important within one or two buying decisions. Their commercial value should therefore be evaluated against the exact prompt cluster, not only their overall rank.
Company-owned sources matter as well. Humana, Delta Dental, Guardian Life, Kaiser Permanente, UnitedHealthcare, Ethos and others appear as visible sources. That means AI Mode visibility cannot be reduced to earned media. First-party content quality and clarity are part of the citation market too.
Insurance Google AI Mode Rankings Were Persistent, but Not Static
| Pair | Shared Top 100 domains | Jaccard similarity |
|---|---|---|
| July vs. August | 86 | 75.4% |
| July vs. September | 82 | 69.5% |
| August vs. September | 91 | 83.5% |
81 domains appeared in the Google AI Mode insurance Top 100 in all three months.
The July-August Top 100 Jaccard similarity was 75.4%, July-September was 69.5%, and August-September was 83.5%. The aggregate source market therefore showed substantial persistence, even as individual ranks moved.
The top of the ranking was especially steady. U.S. News ranked 1st in July and August and 3rd in September. NerdWallet ranked 2nd, 2nd and 1st. Forbes ranked 3rd, 3rd and 2nd. Money.com ranked 5th, 4th and 4th.
This does not mean every prompt returned the same source set. The separate citation-drift study shows much greater volatility at the matched prompt-and-surface level. Aggregate leadership can be stable even when query-level source sets rotate.

Google AI Mode Is Closest to AI Overviews in Insurance, but the Source Market Still Fragments Across Platforms
The Google AI Mode insurance Top 100 shares 87 domains with the Google AI Overviews insurance Top 100, for a Jaccard similarity of about 77.0%.
That is the closest validated Insurance platform pair available from the final child studies. The same AI Mode Top 100 shares 59 domains with Perplexity, 55 with Gemini and 50 with ChatGPT.
The rank order also changes materially even inside the two Google surfaces. U.S. News is #1 in AI Mode and #2 in AI Overviews. NerdWallet is #2 in AI Mode and #1 in AI Overviews. YouTube is #6 in AI Mode but #9 in AI Overviews. Insurify is #10 in AI Mode and sits lower in the AIO insurance list.
The Microsoft Copilot Insurance child document is not used for this comparison because its current body and front matter duplicate the Gemini study. The parent Insurance category study remains the six-platform source of record until Article 36 is repaired.
The practical implication is not that every engine needs a completely separate strategy. It is that a brand should measure portability before assuming it. The two Google surfaces can share a coordinated publisher strategy, while ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot still require their own source checks.
How This Study Relates to Other Insurance and AI Search Research
Conductor: insurance-specific multi-engine benchmarks
Conductor's 2026 Insurance AI Search & AI Overviews Benchmarks analyzes more than 3.6 million insurance brand citations from January through May 2026 across seven answer engines and more than 178,000 prompts. Conductor reports that Google AI Mode accounted for 43.9% of the insurance answer-engine citations in its corpus and averaged 7.3 citations per answer. It also reports that Insureon, Progressive, The Hartford, New York Life and Chubb were tightly grouped among its leading insurance-domain citation shares. (Conductor insurance benchmarks)
That ranking is not expected to match this article because the unit of inclusion differs. Conductor classifies cited domains into an insurance-industry framework. LLMAI begins with high-stakes insurance prompts and retains every visible cited domain, including general publishers, community sources and non-insurance media.
The useful agreement is methodological: both studies show that Google AI Mode is a major source-distribution surface for insurance and that insurance source visibility is not captured by ChatGPT alone.
Ahrefs: broad all-topic Google AI Mode rankings
Ahrefs' September 2026 broad U.S. Google AI Mode study reports Reddit, YouTube, Google, Facebook and Instagram as the five largest sources by mention share among its tracked top domains. (Ahrefs Google AI Mode citations)
This article reaches a very different insurance-specific ranking because the prompt population is commercially narrow and because the primary metric is response-level domain coverage rather than share of citations among top sources.
The difference is useful, not contradictory. It demonstrates why a broad platform leaderboard should not be treated as the publisher map for every commercial category.
Tinuiti and Profound: commercial prompt tracking
Tinuiti's 2026 citation-trends research tracks mid-to-lower-funnel commercial prompts across major AI products and explicitly cautions that citation depth differs by platform. Its Q1 methodology also notes that prompt populations are only examples of commercial use cases, not universal representations of every user query. (Tinuiti Q1 AI Citation Trends)
Tinuiti's Q3 report further shows that source mixes continue to evolve over time and differ by platform and category. (Tinuiti Q3 AI Citation Trends)
LLMAI addresses cross-platform citation-depth differences by making response-level domain presence the primary ranking metric and treating raw citation counts as secondary.

How the LLM Authority Index Study Is Different
The contribution is not a claim that this is the largest insurance citation dataset. It is not.
The distinctive research design is the combination of:
- one platform family, Google AI Mode;
- one high-stakes commercial research family, Insurance;
- 12 explicitly enumerated insurance vertical labels;
- three monthly measurement periods;
- response-level registrable-domain coverage as the primary metric;
- raw visible citation events as a secondary metric;
- global exact-repeat handling before slice construction;
- Public Suffix List registrable-domain consolidation;
- explicit extraction-failure accounting;
- comparison against the all-platform Insurance Top 100, the overall Google AI Mode Top 100 and the Google AI Overviews insurance Top 100; and
- commercial interpretation for publishers, carriers, brokers, aggregators and CMOs.
Why Google AI Mode Insurance Citation Studies Can Disagree
Different studies can be rigorous and still produce different rankings because they can differ on:
- Prompt population.
- Geography and state-level insurance availability.
- Intent mix, including education, pricing, comparison and brand-specific queries.
- Time window.
- Citation metric and denominator.
- Whether the study begins with prompt topics or cited-domain industry classifications.
- Domain normalization rules.
- Visible-citation extraction and rendering differences.
- Duplicate handling across repeated or overlapping exports.
- Whether first-party, government, social and technical sources are included.
- Product changes inside Google AI Mode.
- Personalization and account context.
The correct first comparison is therefore the research contract, not the headline rank.
What the Results Mean for Insurance Publishers
A publisher can use this study to distinguish broad category breadth from vertical-specific authority.
U.S. News, NerdWallet, Forbes and Money.com can point to repeated visibility across a broad insurance prompt family. A specialist such as Squaremouth, Insurify or Pawlicy has a different commercial story: concentrated visibility in a narrower high-value buying decision.
Publishers should not characterize a high rank as proof that Google "trusts" or endorses the site. The defensible claim is that the domain was repeatedly surfaced as a visible citation source within a defined panel.

What the Results Mean for Insurance CMOs and Brands
A practical workflow is:
- Define the exact product and high-intent prompt cluster.
- Benchmark current company mention, recommendation and source visibility separately.
- Identify the recurring cited domains for those prompts.
- Separate broad publishers, specialist publishers and first-party competitor sources.
- Audit whether the brand has clear first-party pages that answer the same commercial questions.
- Prioritize publisher outreach where source recurrence and buyer relevance overlap.
- Re-run the same benchmark after publishing, PR or entity-optimization work.
The Top 100 is a discovery layer. The vertical tables are closer to an execution layer.
Methodology
Parent dataset
This article uses the frozen July-September 2026 LLM Authority Index archive described in the flagship study.
Eligible platform and category
The analytical slice includes records whose platform family is Google AI Mode and whose research-family membership includes Insurance.
Global exact-repeat handling
Before category filtering, eligible non-failed observations are deduplicated globally. A record is treated as a repeated analytical observation when all of the following match:
- same report month;
- same exact raw platform or source surface;
- same normalized prompt text; and
- same exact set of original citation URLs.
One record is retained while preserving associated source-vertical memberships. This is an anti-double-counting rule, not proof that the upstream system issued a prompt only once.
Prompt normalization
Prompt text is normalized using Unicode NFKC, case folding, whitespace collapse and trimming for the exact-repeat signature.
Domain normalization
Citation URLs are parsed to hostname, lowercased, stripped of a leading www., and consolidated to the registrable domain using the Public Suffix List.
Public infrastructure exclusions
The same public infrastructure rules used in the parent study are applied. No substantive publisher, carrier, broker, comparison site, government source or community site is removed merely because of ownership type.
Primary ranking metric
Response Citation Coverage equals:
eligible Google AI Mode insurance responses citing domain / all eligible Google AI Mode insurance responses
A domain counts no more than once per response.
Secondary metric
Raw visible citation events are retained as a secondary measure. Multiple cited URLs from one domain can produce multiple events but only one response-level domain appearance.
Vertical membership
Exact-deduplicated observations may retain multiple source-vertical memberships when identical records appeared in overlapping exports.
Monthly persistence
Monthly Top 100 lists are ranked by response coverage inside the same Google AI Mode insurance slice. Pairwise Jaccard similarity equals shared Top 100 domains divided by the union of the two Top 100 lists.
Insurance-category lift
Insurance lift compares each domain's response coverage in this article with its response coverage across all four high-stakes families inside Google AI Mode.
It is a descriptive specialization ratio, not a quality score or causal estimate.

Limitations
- The study covers three months, not long-term history.
- The 12 source labels are overlapping research verticals, not statistically independent industries.
- July is unavailable for Long-Term Care Insurance, Renters Insurance and Vision Insurance.
- Vertical sample sizes differ materially.
- Visible citations are not the same as hidden retrieval or model training sources.
- Citation does not establish recommendation causality or endorsement.
- Domain-level aggregation can hide URL-level rotation.
- Google AI Mode can change by query, geography, account state and product version.
- This article does not publish a blanket first-party versus third-party share because the source-relationship taxonomy is not yet complete.
- External studies use different denominators, prompt populations and collection systems.
Commercial Relationship Disclosure
LLM Authority Index is part of a business ecosystem that provides AI visibility, research and marketing services. Affiliated businesses may have current or historical commercial relationships with companies or publishers that appear in the dataset.
Commercial relationships are not inputs to ranking methodology. Domains are included based on observed citation data. No ranking is an endorsement, and no relationship should be treated as evidence that it caused citation visibility.
Dataset and Downloads
The publication package should include a downloadable Top 100 table containing rank, registrable domain, response count, response coverage, citation events, insurance-vertical breadth, monthly rank, all-platform Insurance coverage, broad Google AI Mode coverage and insurance lift inside Google AI Mode.
The internal analysis file should remain versioned separately so future monthly updates do not silently overwrite the July-September 2026 historical table.
