LLM Authority Index Research | High-Stakes Consumer Decisions | Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending | July-September 2026

Reddit remained an important citation source in financial AI answers during the third quarter of 2026, but its position weakened substantially inside high-stakes credit, debt, banking and lending decisions.

On a balanced panel of 13 financial verticals measured in both July and September 2026, Reddit's share of visible citation events fell from 4.26% to 2.29%, a 46.2% relative decline. The percentage of AI responses containing at least one Reddit citation fell from 14.44% to 7.98%, a 44.7% decline.

The decline was broad. All 13 of 13 balanced financial verticals with measurable Reddit citation share in July had a lower Reddit citation-event share in September. The median vertical-level decline was 42.7%.

A stricter matched-prompt analysis pointed in the same direction. Across 1,567 exact prompt-plus-platform scenarios observed in both July and September, 151 lost a Reddit citation while 46 gained one. That is 3.28 Reddit citation losses for every gain.

The decline was not uniform by platform. In the balanced financial panel, Reddit's citation-event share fell about 70.6% in ChatGPT and 77.2% in Perplexity, compared with 25.2% in Google AI Overviews and 37.6% in Google AI Mode. Gemini began from a much lower Reddit baseline, while no Reddit citation events were captured in the Microsoft Copilot slice.

The practical implication is not that Reddit stopped mattering. It is that Reddit became a less dependable direct citation surface for financial AI answers during this period, especially in ChatGPT and Perplexity, while Google continued to cite Reddit materially more often.

Important: This study measures visible citations in a defined high-stakes commercial query panel. It does not measure hidden model training data, and it does not establish that a Reddit citation causes a company to be mentioned, ranked or recommended.

Answer Capsule

Did Reddit lose AI citation visibility in credit, debt, banking and lending decisions from July to September 2026? Yes. In the same 13 financial verticals measured in both months, Reddit's citation-event share fell 46.2%, from 4.26% to 2.29%. Response-level coverage fell 44.7%, from 14.44% to 7.98%. All 13 balanced financial verticals had lower Reddit citation-event share in September. In 1,567 matched prompt-platform scenarios, 151 lost Reddit and 46 gained it, a 3.28-to-1 loss-to-gain ratio.

Key Findings

  • In the full monthly financial panel, Reddit's citation-event share moved from 4.26% in July to 3.07% in August and 2.26% in September.
  • Reddit's financial response citation coverage moved from 14.44% to 11.17% to 7.88%.
  • Reddit's rank by response citation coverage inside this financial family moved from #5 in July to #5 in August and #7 in September.
  • Because three financial verticals were present in September but not July, the primary endpoint comparison uses the 13 verticals available in both months.
  • On that balanced panel, Reddit's citation-event share fell 46.2% and response-level coverage fell 44.7%.
  • 13 of 13 balanced financial verticals with non-zero July Reddit share declined by September.
  • The median financial vertical-level Reddit citation-event-share decline was 42.7%.
  • 12 of 13 verticals declined by at least 25%, and 5 of 13 declined by at least 50%.
  • The steepest measured declines included Certificates of Deposits (-100%), Debt Relief & Consolidation (-100%), Credit Cards (-71.8%), Student Loans (-57.3%) and Credit Cards for Building Credit (-56.2%).
  • In the strict matched scenario analysis, 151 scenarios lost Reddit versus 46 that gained it, a 3.28-to-1 imbalance.
  • Reddit coverage in the matched set fell from 17.04% to 10.34%, a 39.3% relative decline.
  • The paired difference is statistically significant using an exact McNemar test, p < 0.001. The calculated exact p-value is approximately 2.99e-14.
  • The matched ChatGPT financial panel produced 52 Reddit losses versus 5 gains, while Google AI Overviews produced 40 losses versus 23 gains.
  • No single domain replaced Reddit. Forbes appeared as a newly cited source in only 11.9% of Reddit-loss scenarios, and NerdWallet in 11.3%.

Questions This Study Answers

  • How much did Reddit citation visibility decline in high-stakes Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending decisions from July to September 2026?
  • Did the decline persist when the category set, prompt and platform were controlled more tightly?
  • What should publishers, financial brands and CMOs change in response to Reddit's platform-specific citation volatility?

Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions

This study is observational, but the findings have direct commercial value because they show that even a major source domain can lose citation visibility quickly inside a category whose broader source portfolio remains relatively persistent.

For the balanced 13-vertical Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending panel:

  • Reddit citation-event share fell from 4.26% to 2.29%, a 46.2% relative decline;
  • Reddit response citation coverage fell from 14.44% to 7.98%, a 44.7% decline;
  • all 13 of 13 July-positive balanced verticals declined by September; and
  • the strict matched prompt-platform test produced 151 Reddit losses versus 46 gains, or 3.28 losses for every gain.

The decline also differed sharply by platform. Reddit's balanced citation-event share fell about 70.6% in ChatGPT and 77.2% in Perplexity, compared with 25.2% in Google AI Overviews and 37.6% in Google AI Mode.

That pattern belongs inside the broader Persistence-Portability Gap framework.

The parent Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending Citation Authority Study reports:

  • 77.0% median monthly Top 100 persistence;
  • 44.9% median cross-platform Top 100 portability; and
  • an approximate 32.1 percentage-point Persistence-Portability Gap.

This Article adds a source-specific lesson to that category-level framework: a relatively persistent source portfolio does not mean every important source inside the portfolio is stable. Reddit weakened materially even while the broader Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending source market retained substantial continuity.

That distinction matters operationally. Brands and publishers should measure at least three different questions separately:

  1. Is the category source portfolio persistent over time?
  2. Does source authority transfer across AI platforms?
  3. Is a specific source such as Reddit gaining, losing or holding visibility inside that portfolio?

Citation visibility should also remain separate from brand mentions, recommendation rate, ranking, sentiment, citation-recommendation coupling and downstream outcomes. A Reddit citation can disappear without a brand recommendation disappearing, and a Reddit citation can appear without causing the recommendation.

Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings

Research findingWhat publishers can responsibly sayWhat brands and CMOs can reasonably do
Reddit citation-event share fell 46.2% on the balanced panel"Historical prominence for a major source can change materially inside a high-stakes financial decision market."Re-check any AI-search strategy that assumes Reddit's prior direct-citation role is still representative.
Matched scenarios produced 151 Reddit losses and 46 gains"The decline survives a same-prompt, same-platform longitudinal test."Maintain fixed prompt panels for priority commercial queries and track source gains, losses and persistence over time.
All 13 balanced verticals declined"The measured decline was broad across the Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending family rather than isolated to one product niche."Treat the result as a portfolio risk signal, then inspect the exact product cluster before reallocating budget.
ChatGPT and Perplexity declined much faster than Google's AI surfaces"Reddit citation visibility was platform-specific during this period."Maintain platform-specific source maps instead of one blended AI visibility score.
No single domain replaced Reddit"The source market redistributed across multiple publishers rather than moving to one universal replacement."Build a portfolio of third-party editorial and specialist sources rather than trying to replace Reddit with one outlet.
The parent category has 77.0% persistence but Reddit itself declined sharply"A persistent category source ecosystem can still contain major source-level volatility."Track category persistence and individual source trajectories as separate operating metrics.
The parent category has only 44.9% median cross-platform portability"Source authority transfers imperfectly across AI engines."Preserve a shared cross-platform core, then maintain Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot-specific priorities.
Broad all-topic studies still rank Reddit highly"Citation prominence depends on query universe, platform, metric and time period."Do not import a broad Reddit leaderboard into a credit, debt, banking or lending campaign without category validation.
Citation loss is not the same as recommendation loss"This study measures visible source behavior, not recommendation causality."Measure citations, mentions, recommendations, rank, sentiment and business outcomes separately.

The operating model is straightforward: identify the sources that matter for the exact financial decision, measure them by platform, keep a fixed longitudinal prompt panel, and update the source portfolio when the evidence changes.

How This Study Fits the High-Stakes Consumer Decisions Research Corpus

This Article is the Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending branch of the broader Reddit trend research.

It should be read with:

The six platform-specific Reddit studies, Articles 43, 44, 45, 55, 56 and 57, isolate how this category trend behaved in Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.

The Core Finding: Reddit's Financial Citation Share Fell Nearly in Half on a Balanced Panel

September included three Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending verticals that did not have July datasets: Home Equity Loans, Savings Account and Student Loan Refinance. Those verticals are valuable for the broader three-month source-authority studies, but they cannot be used for a strict July-to-September trend comparison.

The primary endpoint analysis therefore uses only the 13 financial verticals present in both July and September.

MetricJuly 2026September 2026Relative change
Balanced-panel AI responses5,8785,375-8.6%
Visible citation events28,40322,550-20.6%
Reddit citation events1,210517-57.3%
Reddit share of citation events4.26%2.29%-46.2%
Responses citing Reddit849429-49.5%
Reddit response citation coverage14.44%7.98%-44.7%

This like-for-like panel matters because a raw September comparison would mix the Reddit trend with changes in the category universe. Controlling the vertical set does not eliminate the decline. It leaves a decline of roughly 46% in citation-event share and 45% in response coverage.

This section answers the following questions

  • Could new September financial verticals explain Reddit's decline? No. The decline remains large after those verticals are removed from the endpoint comparison.
  • Did Reddit merely receive fewer raw citations because the September panel was smaller? No. Reddit's share of all citation events and its response-level coverage both fell sharply.
  • Is the decline visible in both event-level and response-level metrics? Yes.

Reddit Fell Month by Month Across the Full Financial Panel

The three-month path also moved downward rather than depending on a single endpoint:

September 20266,53427,0136112.26%5157.88%#7

The full panel includes the September-only financial verticals, so it is not the primary causal or endpoint comparison. It is useful because it shows the direction of travel: Reddit's financial citation share and response coverage fell in each successive month.

The Strict Matched-Prompt Test Shows More Than Three Losses for Every Gain

The balanced vertical test controls the category set, but it does not guarantee that the exact same prompts appear in both endpoint months. We therefore ran a stricter paired analysis.

A scenario was included only when the same normalized prompt on the same raw platform surface had exactly one deduplicated analytical observation in July and exactly one in September within the balanced financial universe.

1,567 prompt-platform scenarios met that rule. Another 11 keys with multiple analytical observations in at least one endpoint month were excluded from the strict pair test.

July Reddit citationSeptember Reddit citationMatched scenarios
YesYes116
YesNo151
NoYes46
NoNo1,254
Total1,567

There were 151 Reddit losses and 46 gains. Among the discordant pairs, Reddit was 3.28 times more likely to disappear than to newly appear.

Matched Reddit response coverage fell from 17.04% to 10.34%, a 39.3% relative decrease.

The exact McNemar paired test is highly significant, with p < 0.001. The calculated exact p-value is approximately 2.99e-14.

Statistical significance does not tell a marketer why a citation changed. It does tell us that the imbalance between losses and gains is difficult to explain as a symmetric set of random paired changes inside this sample.

This section answers the following questions

  • Did Reddit decline when the prompt and platform were held constant? Yes.
  • Was the decline just a result of different September queries? The matched-pair test argues against that explanation.
  • Is the effect commercially material? A 39.3% decline in matched response coverage and a 3.28-to-1 loss-to-gain ratio are large enough to matter for AI visibility planning.

Every Balanced Financial Vertical Lost Reddit Citation Share

All 13 financial verticals with both July and September data had positive Reddit citation-event share in July. All 13 were lower in September.

The median relative decline was 42.7%. Twelve of the 13 declined by at least 25%, and five declined by at least 50%.

The steepest measured event-share declines were:

  1. Certificates of Deposits: 4.60% to 0.00%, a 100% decline.
  2. Debt Relief & Consolidation: 3.28% to 0.00%, a 100% decline.
  3. Credit Cards: 7.32% to 2.06%, a 71.8% decline.
  4. Student Loans: 2.93% to 1.25%, a 57.3% decline.
  5. Credit Cards for Building Credit: 5.77% to 2.53%, a 56.2% decline.

The mildest measured decline was Money Market Accounts, where Reddit's citation-event share fell 12.8%, from 4.29% to 3.75%.

One useful caution appears in Tax Relief. Reddit's event share fell 42.3%, but response-level coverage increased from 3.49% to 4.88%. That is not a contradiction. A domain can appear in a slightly larger fraction of responses while receiving fewer citation occurrences relative to the total citation volume. This is one reason the study reports both metrics instead of compressing them into a single visibility score.

The Decline Was Much Steeper in ChatGPT and Perplexity Than on Google

The financial category reinforces one of the most important findings from the broader Reddit study: platform behavior diverged sharply.

The endpoint rows below use the balanced financial vertical set for July and September. August is shown as the observed midpoint in the full financial family and is discussed descriptively rather than as a balanced endpoint.

Gemini1.41%0.88%-37.6%2.03%1.26%-37.9%
Microsoft Copilot0.00%0.00%N/A0.00%0.00%N/A

Several patterns stand out.

ChatGPT

Reddit's financial citation-event share fell from 9.96% to 2.93%, a 70.6% decline. Response citation coverage fell from 32.88% to 9.07%. In the strict matched ChatGPT subset, there were 52 Reddit losses versus 5 gains, a 10.4-to-1 imbalance.

This category-specific result is directionally consistent with PromptWatch's August 2026 report of a sharp ChatGPT Search Reddit citation collapse. PromptWatch measured a much steeper short-window decline because it used a different time window, query universe and denominator. The relevant point is the direction and platform specificity, not the expectation that independent studies should produce the same percentage.

Perplexity

Reddit's financial citation-event share fell from 4.46% to 1.02%, a 77.2% decline. Response coverage fell from 9.96% to 1.51%. The strict matched subset had 8 losses and zero gains.

Tinuiti's Q3 research also identified Perplexity as an exception to the broader rise in social citation share across several platforms. Our financial panel narrows that observation to a high-stakes commercial category and isolates Reddit specifically.

Google AI Overviews

Reddit declined more gradually, from 3.87% to 2.89% of citation events, a 25.2% decrease. Response coverage fell from 15.27% to 10.70%. In the matched set, Reddit losses still outnumbered gains, 40 to 23, but the imbalance was far smaller than in ChatGPT.

Google AI Mode

Reddit's event share fell from 3.89% to 2.43%, a 37.6% decrease, while response coverage fell from 19.35% to 14.32%. The matched set produced 50 losses versus 16 gains.

Gemini

Reddit's baseline was much lower in this financial panel. Event share fell from 1.41% to 0.88%, while matched scenarios were nearly all non-Reddit in both months. With such a low baseline, small counts can produce unstable relative percentages, so the Gemini result should not be overinterpreted.

Microsoft Copilot

No Reddit citation events appeared in the captured Copilot financial slice in either endpoint month.

That finding should be treated as a capture result requiring platform-specific validation, not proof that Microsoft Copilot never cites Reddit.

The Matched Platform Test Shows Why Blended AI Visibility Can Mislead

Perplexity13980N/A5.76%0.00%

A single blended Reddit score would hide the fact that the direct citation opportunity changed very differently across platforms.

For a financial brand, that means a strategy built around Reddit visibility cannot be evaluated with one aggregate KPI. A decline in ChatGPT direct citations can coexist with material Reddit visibility in Google's AI surfaces.

What Appeared When Reddit Disappeared?

The matched-pair design lets us examine the 151 scenarios that cited Reddit in July but did not cite it in September.

There was no single replacement source.

The two most common newly appearing domains were Forbes and NerdWallet, yet each appeared in only about one in nine Reddit-loss scenarios. Bankrate appeared in about one in ten.

That is not evidence of a one-for-one substitution from Reddit to a specific publisher. It is evidence of source redistribution. Different prompts shifted toward different combinations of editorial publishers, financial comparison sites, first-party institutions, government sources and video platforms.

The commercial implication is important: a brand trying to replace lost Reddit visibility should not simply "find the new Reddit." The data does not show one.

What This Means for Financial Brands and CMOs

1. Reddit should be treated as one authority surface, not the authority surface

Reddit can still matter for product experience, reputation, community discussion, query discovery and some direct AI citations. But this three-month financial panel shows that direct citation visibility can change quickly and differently by platform.

2. Measure financial AI visibility by platform

ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot do not share one source-selection policy. A Reddit strategy that still supports Google may produce far less direct citation value in ChatGPT than it did earlier in the quarter.

3. Build durable third-party editorial coverage in parallel

The replacement analysis repeatedly surfaces publishers such as Forbes, NerdWallet, Bankrate, Experian, The Wall Street Journal, CNBC, Money.com, Credible and Finder, but none dominates. That argues for a portfolio approach to earned authority rather than reliance on a single community platform.

4. Do not confuse citation loss with recommendation loss

A company can still be mentioned or recommended when Reddit is not cited. Conversely, a Reddit citation does not prove that Reddit caused the recommendation. Citation visibility and recommendation visibility should be tracked as related but separate measurements.

5. Watch the high-intent subcategory, not only the family average

Credit Cards fell much faster than Money Market Accounts. Certificates of Deposits lost all measured Reddit event share in the balanced endpoint comparison. A family average is useful for strategy, but budget allocation should use the actual prompt clusters and verticals that matter commercially.

What This Means for Financial Publishers

Reddit's volatility creates a potentially valuable publishing story, but the opportunity should not be overstated.

A financial publisher cannot infer that Reddit's lost citations automatically flow to editorial domains. They do not. However, when source selection redistributes, publishers with strong commercial comparison content, first-party data, transparent methodology, product-specific evidence and crawlable pages have more opportunities to enter the citation mix.

For publishers selling advertising or strategic partnerships, category-specific AI citation data can support a more precise conversation with brands:

  • which AI surfaces cite the publisher;
  • which financial decision categories cite it;
  • which competitors appear in the same answers;
  • which source types are gaining or losing visibility;
  • whether the publisher is present in prompts where Reddit is receding;
  • and whether publisher citation visibility is stable across months.

The defensible sales claim is measured AI citation visibility, not "AI trusts us" and not "our citation caused the recommendation."

How This Study Relates to Prior Reddit Citation Research

PromptWatch documented a sharp ChatGPT Search break

PromptWatch reported that Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations averaged about 3.83% from July 18 through August 7, 2026, then fell to about 0.52% by August 14-17, an 86.4% relative decline. PromptWatch also reported much gentler declines on Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode over the same period.

That external pattern is directionally consistent with this financial panel: ChatGPT declined much more sharply than Google's AI surfaces.

The percentages should not be directly compared because the studies use different prompts, date windows, citation denominators and collection systems.

Search Engine Journal cautioned against overclaiming the cause

Search Engine Journal reported the PromptWatch decline but emphasized that timing alone did not establish why Reddit citations fell. We agree with that caution.

This study measures the what, not the why. It documents where Reddit citations changed in a high-stakes financial panel. It does not claim to identify the retrieval-system cause.

Tinuiti shows that social citation trends are platform-specific

Tinuiti's Q3 2026 AI Citation Trends Report found that most tracked platforms were at or near highs in social citation share, with Perplexity as a notable exception. Tinuiti's query categories differ substantially from this study and are not centered on consumer finance, but the work reinforces a key conclusion: social-source behavior varies by platform and category.

Ahrefs shows why query universe matters

Ahrefs' September 2026 broad U.S. studies still place Reddit among the most prominent cited domains across several AI platforms. Under Ahrefs' all-topic mention-share methodology, Reddit ranked #1 in ChatGPT at 16.8%, #1 in Google AI Mode at 17.9%, #2 in Google AI Overviews at 18.5%, #1 in Gemini at 28.5%, and #1 in Perplexity at 21.6%.

Those figures should not be merged numerically with this study. Ahrefs uses a broad U.S. all-topic query universe and a different mention-share denominator. LLM Authority Index measures a defined set of high-stakes Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending consumer decisions.

The apparent disagreement is commercially useful rather than contradictory: Reddit can remain one of the largest broad-web AI sources while losing direct citation share inside a narrower, high-intent financial decision market.

How This Study Is Different

This study is not a generic ranking of websites cited by AI.

It combines:

  1. a high-stakes commercial focus centered on credit, debt, banking and lending decisions;
  2. three months of observation, allowing directional analysis rather than a single snapshot;
  3. six AI platform families;
  4. a balanced 13-vertical July-to-September panel;
  5. a strict matched prompt-plus-platform test;
  6. both citation-event share and response citation coverage;
  7. a vertical-by-vertical audit;
  8. a platform-specific trend analysis;
  9. and a replacement-source analysis showing what newly appeared when Reddit disappeared.

This design is intended to answer a commercial question: how dependable was Reddit as a directly cited source in AI answers about consequential financial decisions, and how did that dependability change over time?

Why AI Citation Studies Can Disagree

Two well-executed AI citation studies can produce very different Reddit percentages without either one being wrong.

Query universe

A broad internet sample contains entertainment, software, hobbies, troubleshooting, local questions and informational topics where Reddit may be especially strong. A high-stakes financial panel is a different population.

Platform surface

"ChatGPT citations" can refer to different product modes, retrieval behaviors, models or user experiences. The same is true for Google and Microsoft AI products.

Denominator

This article reports both:

  • Reddit citation events divided by all citation events; and
  • responses containing Reddit divided by all eligible responses.

Other studies may calculate share only among cited responses, only among the top N domains, or by pages rather than responses.

Time window

A one-week August break and a three-month July-to-September comparison answer different questions.

Prompt weighting

This study does not weight the published trend by search volume or estimated revenue value. Other systems may weight queries or brands differently.

Deduplication

Exact-repeat anti-double-counting can change denominators when the same response was captured more than once.

Domain consolidation

Subdomains can be treated separately or consolidated to registrable domains. This study uses Public Suffix List logic for domain consolidation.

Infrastructure exclusions

Navigation, thumbnail, map and technical-service URLs can appear in captured citation arrays. Excluding obvious infrastructure prevents those endpoints from being interpreted as publishers.

The correct conclusion is not that one global Reddit citation percentage exists. The useful conclusion is that AI citation visibility must be defined by query population, platform, collection method and time period.

The source vertical labels are archival dataset labels. They are not claimed to be 16 statistically independent industries, and prompt overlap can occur across labels.

Methodology

Source archive

This study uses the same frozen July-September 2026 LLM Authority Index research archive used in the parent 2026 AI Citation Authority Study and the broader Reddit decline study.

The archive contains observations from six AI platform families across high-stakes consumer decision research. This article restricts the trend analysis to the Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending family.

Primary time window

The primary research window is July, August and September 2026. The main endpoint trend uses July and September because those months provide the widest separation in the frozen quarter.

Explicit extraction failures

Observations marked as extraction failures are excluded from analytical denominators.

Exact-repeat anti-double-counting

An observation is treated as an exact analytical repeat when it has the same:

  • report month;
  • raw platform/source surface;
  • normalized prompt text; and
  • exact set of original citation URLs.

One record is retained for analytical counting. This rule is an anti-double-counting control, not proof that the underlying prompt was executed only once.

Prompt normalization

Prompt text is normalized using Unicode NFKC, case folding, whitespace collapse and trimming.

Reddit identification

Citation URLs are normalized to registrable domains using Public Suffix List logic. Reddit citations are observations whose consolidated registrable domain is reddit.com.

Citation-event share

Reddit citation-event share is:

Reddit citation occurrences / all eligible citation occurrences

A response can contribute more than one citation event to the same domain if multiple eligible source URLs from that domain are present.

Response citation coverage

Reddit response citation coverage is:

Eligible responses containing at least one Reddit citation / all eligible responses

A domain counts at most once per response for this metric.

Balanced July-to-September panel

The endpoint comparison includes only the 13 financial source verticals with valid datasets in both July and September. Home Equity Loans, Savings Account and Student Loan Refinance are excluded from that endpoint comparison because July datasets were not present in the archive.

Strict matched prompt-platform analysis

For the paired test, a key consists of the normalized prompt and exact raw platform surface. A key is included only when it has exactly one deduplicated analytical observation in July and exactly one in September inside the balanced financial universe.

That produced 1,567 matched scenarios. 11 ambiguous keys with more than one observation in at least one endpoint month were excluded.

McNemar test

The exact McNemar test uses the discordant pairs:

  • Reddit in July, not Reddit in September: 151;
  • not Reddit in July, Reddit in September: 46.

The exact two-sided p-value is approximately 2.99e-14.

Vertical audit

The vertical table uses vertical-specific exact-repeat deduplication. This preserves like-for-like visibility within each named source dataset and avoids a duplicate captured under two archival vertical labels from being counted twice inside a single vertical.

Platform families

The six platform families are:

  • ChatGPT
  • Gemini
  • Google AI Mode
  • Google AI Overviews
  • Microsoft Copilot
  • Perplexity

Platform-family aggregation does not imply that each product used one unchanged model, retrieval system or citation contract throughout the quarter.

Infrastructure exclusions

Obvious technical and navigation endpoints are excluded from domain analysis, including known image, map and wrapper infrastructure such as images.openai.com, Mapbox, OpenStreetMap, Yelp CDN, selected Bing map/image/ad-click wrappers and myactivity.google.com.

Substantive Google-owned surfaces are not blanket-excluded.

Limitations

  1. The study measures visible citations, not hidden training data. Reddit may influence model behavior even when no Reddit URL is shown.
  2. Citation does not establish causation. A cited source may support, contextualize or merely accompany a recommendation.
  3. The panel is commercially focused. It should not be generalized to all finance questions or all internet queries.
  4. The vertical labels are archival research labels. Prompt overlap exists, and the verticals are not independent experiments.
  5. Platform capture differs. A zero, especially in Copilot, can reflect platform behavior, citation-surface behavior or collection mechanics.
  6. The matched test requires exact analytical uniqueness. Ambiguous prompt-platform keys are intentionally excluded.
  7. Three September financial verticals lack July counterparts. They are excluded from the balanced endpoint comparison.
  8. Prompt weighting is unweighted. The published trend does not weight prompts by search volume, revenue, CPC or conversion probability.
  9. The period is short. July through September is sufficient to identify material change in this panel but not to establish a permanent long-run trend.
  10. External studies use different methods. Their percentages should be compared directionally and methodologically, not as if they share one denominator.
