Reddit's visible role as an AI citation source declined across high-stakes investing, retirement, mortgage and financial consumer questions between July and September 2026.
Across the balanced family panel, Reddit accounted for 4.95% of citation events in July and 3.31% in September, a 33.1% relative decline. Response citation coverage fell from 15.05% to 9.64%, down 36.0%.
The decline was broad rather than isolated. All 11 of 11 covered verticals with measurable July Reddit citation share were lower in September. The median vertical decline in citation-event share was 39.6%.
A stricter matched-prompt test points in the same direction. Across 1,934 exact July-to-September prompt-and-platform scenarios, there were 200 cases where Reddit appeared in July but not September, compared with 53 gains. That is 3.77 losses for every gain.
The pattern was highly platform-specific. ChatGPT and Perplexity showed the steepest losses. Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode declined more gradually. Microsoft Copilot had no captured Reddit citations in the matched family slice at either endpoint.
These findings do not show that Reddit stopped influencing AI answers, that Reddit stopped being useful to consumers, or that any single publisher replaced Reddit. They show a measurable decline in visible Reddit citation activity within this defined high-stakes financial decision set.
Answer Capsule
How much did Reddit citation visibility decline in AI answers about investing, retirement, mortgages and financial decisions from July to September 2026?
Reddit's citation-event share fell from 4.95% to 3.31%, a 33.1% relative decline. Response citation coverage fell from 15.05% to 9.64%, down 36.0%. All 11 covered verticals declined. In the strict matched set, Reddit losses outnumbered gains 200 to 53, or 3.77 losses per gain. The decline was especially sharp in ChatGPT and Perplexity, while Google's two AI search surfaces showed smaller but still negative endpoint movement.

Questions This Study Answers
- How much did Reddit citation visibility decline in high-stakes Investing, Retirement, Mortgage and Financial decisions from July to September 2026?
- Did the decline persist when the same prompt and platform were compared, and how differently did the six AI platform families behave?
- What should financial publishers, investment brands, mortgage companies and CMOs change in response to Reddit's source-level volatility?
Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions
Investing, retirement, mortgage and related financial decisions involve large, often irreversible commitments. A consumer comparing a mortgage lender, reverse mortgage provider, investment platform, crypto exchange, gold dealer or retirement strategy is making a materially different decision from someone researching entertainment or a low-cost product.
That makes source selection commercially important, but this study shows why a source strategy cannot be treated as fixed.
Across the balanced 11-vertical family panel:
- Reddit citation-event share fell from 4.95% to 3.31%, a 33.1% relative decline;
- Reddit response citation coverage fell from 15.05% to 9.64%, down 36.0%;
- all 11 of 11 comparable verticals declined; and
- the strict matched prompt-platform analysis produced 200 Reddit losses versus 53 gains, or 3.77 losses for every gain.
The family average hides major platform differences:
- ChatGPT Reddit citation-event share fell 74.6%;
- Perplexity fell 87.0%;
- Google AI Overviews fell 23.5%;
- Google AI Mode fell 22.9%;
- Gemini moved from a much smaller 1.07% to 0.91% baseline; and
- Microsoft Copilot had no captured Reddit citation events in this family slice at either endpoint.
Those differences belong inside the broader Persistence-Portability Gap framework.
The parent Investing, Retirement, Mortgage and Financial Citation Authority Study reports:
- 66.7% median monthly Top 100 persistence;
- 28.2% median cross-platform Top 100 portability; and
- an approximate 38.5 percentage-point Persistence-Portability Gap.
This Article adds a source-specific lesson: a source portfolio can remain relatively persistent while an important individual source inside that portfolio declines sharply. Reddit weakened materially even though the broader financial source ecosystem retained meaningful month-to-month continuity.
For day-to-day AI search work, teams should measure at least three different questions separately:
- Is the financial source portfolio persistent over time?
- Does source authority transfer across AI platforms?
- Is a specific source such as Reddit gaining, losing or holding visibility inside that portfolio?
Citation visibility should also remain separate from brand mentions, recommendation rate, ranking, sentiment, citation-recommendation coupling and downstream outcomes. A Reddit citation can disappear without a brand recommendation disappearing, and a Reddit citation can appear without causing the recommendation.
Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings
| Research finding | What financial publishers can responsibly say | What brands and CMOs can reasonably do |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit citation-event share fell 33.1% on the balanced financial panel | "Historical prominence for a major source can change materially inside a high-stakes financial decision market." | Re-check strategies that assume Reddit's prior direct-citation role is still representative. |
| Matched scenarios produced 200 Reddit losses and 53 gains | "The decline survives a same-prompt, same-platform longitudinal test." | Maintain fixed prompt panels for priority commercial queries and track source gains, losses and persistence over time. |
| All 11 comparable verticals declined | "The measured decline was broad across the family rather than isolated to one product niche." | Treat the result as a family-level signal, then inspect the exact investing, mortgage, crypto, gold or retirement prompt cluster before reallocating budget. |
| ChatGPT fell 74.6% and Perplexity fell 87.0%, while Google's two surfaces fell about 23% | "Reddit citation visibility was strongly platform-specific during this period." | Maintain platform-specific source maps instead of one blended AI visibility score. |
| No single domain consistently replaced Reddit | "The source market redistributed across multiple publishers and source types." | Build a portfolio of broad editorial, specialist, institutional, video and first-party sources rather than trying to replace Reddit with one outlet. |
| The parent family has 66.7% temporal persistence while Reddit itself declined | "A persistent category source ecosystem can still contain major source-level volatility." | Track category persistence and individual source trajectories as separate operating metrics. |
| The parent family has only 28.2% frozen median cross-platform portability | "Financial source authority transfers poorly across AI engines relative to its temporal persistence." | Preserve a shared cross-platform core, then maintain separate Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot source priorities. |
| Broad all-topic studies still rank Reddit highly | "Citation prominence depends on query universe, platform, metric and time period." | Do not import a broad Reddit leaderboard into a high-intent financial campaign without category validation. |
| Citation loss is not recommendation loss | "This study measures visible source behavior, not recommendation causality." | Measure citations, mentions, recommendations, rank, sentiment and business outcomes separately. |
The operating model is straightforward: identify the sources that matter for the exact financial decision, measure them by platform, keep a fixed longitudinal prompt panel, and update the source portfolio when the evidence changes.

How This Study Fits the High-Stakes Consumer Decisions Research Corpus
This Article is the Investing, Retirement, Mortgage and Financial branch of the broader Reddit trend research.
It should be read with:

The six platform-specific Reddit studies, Articles 49, 50, 51, 61, 62 and 63, isolate how this financial trend behaved in Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.
What We Studied
The family contains 11 vertical labels:
- Annuities
- Crypto Exchanges
- Crypto Wallets
- Gold IRAs and Precious Metals Dealers
- Mortgage
- Mortgage Refinance Lenders
- Online Financial Advisors
- Online Stock Brokers
- Reverse Mortgage
- Robo-Advisors
- Structured Settlements
Unlike the insurance and credit-family Reddit decline studies, all 11 verticals were present in both July and September in the frozen archive. No vertical had to be removed from the balanced endpoint because of a missing July dataset.
Reddit's Financial Citation Share Fell 33.1%
| Month | Deduplicated responses | Citation events | Reddit citation events | Reddit citation-event share | Reddit response citation coverage | Reddit response-level rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| July 2026 | 5,197 | 24,317 | 1,203 | 4.95% | 15.05% | #2 |
| August 2026 | 3,888 | 17,500 | 741 | 4.23% | 12.37% | #4 |
| September 2026 | 5,085 | 21,259 | 704 | 3.31% | 9.64% | #7 |
The endpoint decline is visible on both primary measures.
Citation-event share fell 33.1% on a relative basis. Response citation coverage fell 36.0%.
The August midpoint is directionally consistent with a gradual family-level decline, but the platform sections below show that this aggregate curve hides very different platform behavior.

| Robo-Advisors | 8.84% | 6.11% | -30.9% | 24.82% | 17.60% | -29.1% |
| Structured Settlements | 1.83% | 0.44% | -75.8% | 2.83% | 1.18% | -58.2% |
All 11 verticals with measurable July Reddit citation share were lower in September.
The steepest citation-event-share declines were:
- Structured Settlements, down 75.8% from 1.83% to 0.44%.
- Reverse Mortgage, down 67.0% from 2.00% to 0.66%.
- Mortgage, down 52.1% from 3.50% to 1.68%.
The most resilient vertical was Crypto Wallets, but even there Reddit citation-event share declined 15.5%.
Questions this section answers: Which financial verticals changed the most? Was the decline limited to mortgages or retirement products? Which decision category retained the most Reddit citation visibility?
This breadth matters. A single volatile vertical could be explained by a narrow prompt mix or an isolated market event. Eleven declines across 11 separate financial-decision verticals point to a wider change in visible source selection within this family.

The Strict Matched Test Confirms the Direction
The balanced family endpoint controls for vertical availability. The matched test is stricter.
For each candidate scenario, we required the same normalized prompt and exact platform surface in July and September. A scenario was included only when there was exactly one eligible July observation and one eligible September observation after the exact-repeat anti-double-counting rule.
That produced 1,934 matched scenarios.
| Matched result | Count |
|---|---|
| Reddit cited in both July and September | 189 |
| Reddit cited in July but not September | 200 |
| Reddit absent in July but cited in September | 53 |
| Reddit absent in both months | 1,492 |
Reddit losses outnumbered gains 200 to 53, or 3.77 losses for every gain.
Matched response coverage fell from 20.11% to 12.51%, a 37.8% relative decline.
The exact paired test is highly inconsistent with an even loss-versus-gain split under the matched design, with an exact two-sided McNemar/binomial p-value of approximately 2.87e-21. This is evidence of directional imbalance within the matched sample. It does not identify the cause of that imbalance.
The Platform Differences Are Larger Than the Family Average Suggests
| AI platform | July Reddit event share | September Reddit event share | Relative change | July response coverage | September response coverage | Coverage change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 8.87% | 2.26% | -74.6% | 28.41% | 7.98% | -71.9% |
| Google AI Overviews | 5.37% | 4.10% | -23.5% | 17.66% | 14.82% | -16.1% |
| Google AI Mode | 5.09% | 3.92% | -22.9% | 22.14% | 17.54% | -20.8% |
| Gemini | 1.07% | 0.91% | -15.3% | 1.62% | 1.08% | -33.0% |
| Perplexity | 4.82% | 0.62% | -87.0% | 7.68% | 0.80% | -89.5% |
| Microsoft Copilot | 0.00% | 0.00% | n/a | 0.00% | 0.00% | n/a |
The blended family decline of 33.1% masks much larger changes in ChatGPT and Perplexity.
ChatGPT
Reddit citation-event share fell from 8.87% to 2.26%, a 74.6% decline. Response citation coverage fell from 28.41% to 7.98%.
The strict matched ChatGPT subset contained 38 Reddit losses and 4 gains, a 9.5-to-1 imbalance.
This direction is consistent with PromptWatch's August 2026 analysis, which reported a sharp drop in Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations over a short period. PromptWatch studied a broader query universe and a different denominator, so its percentage should not be expected to equal the 74.6% endpoint decline measured here. The useful comparison is the platform-specific direction and timing.
Perplexity
Perplexity showed the largest endpoint decline in this family. Reddit event share fell from 4.82% to 0.62%, down 87.0%. Response coverage fell 89.5%.
The matched subset contained 16 losses and no gains.
Tinuiti's Q3 2026 citation research separately identified Perplexity as a notable exception to the broader rise in social-source citation share seen across several other platforms. Tinuiti's tracked categories differ from this family, but the platform-specific direction is relevant context.
Google AI Overviews
Reddit event share declined from 5.37% to 4.10%, a 23.5% relative decline.
The matched Google AI Overviews subset produced 60 losses and 22 gains. The decline is meaningful but materially smaller than the ChatGPT and Perplexity declines.
Ahrefs' broad September 2026 study still ranked Reddit among the most-cited domains in Google AI Overviews across all topics. That is not inconsistent with this study. A domain can remain a large source in a cross-sectional all-topic leaderboard while losing share inside one narrower category over time.
Google AI Mode
Reddit event share fell from 5.09% to 3.92%, a 22.9% decline.
The matched AI Mode subset contained 79 losses and 25 gains.
Ahrefs' broad September 2026 AI Mode data ranked Reddit first by mention share across its all-topic query universe. Again, that broad cross-sectional result can coexist with a category-specific longitudinal decline. The populations and denominators are different.
Gemini
Gemini started from a much lower Reddit baseline. Event share moved from 1.07% to 0.91%. The matched set contained 7 losses and 2 gains.
Because the baseline counts are small, Gemini percentage changes should be interpreted cautiously.
Microsoft Copilot
No Reddit citation events appeared in the captured Copilot family slice at either endpoint, and the matched Copilot subset contained neither Reddit losses nor gains.
That is a property of this capture and filtering process. It should not be generalized into a claim that Microsoft Copilot never cites Reddit for financial questions.

Matched Platform Results
| Platform | Matched scenarios | Reddit losses | Reddit gains | Loss-to-gain ratio | July matched coverage | September matched coverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 169 | 38 | 4 | 9.50:1 | 26.63% | 6.51% |
| Google AI Overviews | 671 | 60 | 22 | 2.73:1 | 20.72% | 15.05% |
| Google AI Mode | 440 | 79 | 25 | 3.16:1 | 41.36% | 29.09% |
| Gemini | 206 | 7 | 2 | 3.50:1 | 3.40% | 0.97% |
| Perplexity | 221 | 16 | 0 | n/a | 7.24% | 0.00% |
| Microsoft Copilot | 227 | 0 | 0 | n/a | 0.00% | 0.00% |
A blended Reddit visibility metric would conceal these differences. For a financial brand or publisher, a 9.5-to-1 ChatGPT loss-gain imbalance is operationally different from a roughly 3-to-1 imbalance on Google's AI surfaces.
That is why platform-specific measurement should be treated as a core part of AI visibility analysis rather than a reporting detail.
What Appeared When Reddit Disappeared?
The matched design identified 200 scenarios where Reddit was cited in July but not in September. We then examined which registrable domains appeared in September that were absent from the matched July citation set.
| Newly appearing September domain | Reddit-loss scenarios | Share of Reddit-loss scenarios |
|---|---|---|
| money.com | 30 | 15.0% |
| investopedia.com | 30 | 15.0% |
| youtube.com | 27 | 13.5% |
| forbes.com | 26 | 13.0% |
| yahoo.com | 24 | 12.0% |
| google.com | 22 | 11.0% |
| coinbureau.com | 14 | 7.0% |
| finder.com | 13 | 6.5% |
| fool.com | 13 | 6.5% |
| bitcoinfoundation.org | 12 | 6.0% |
| fidelity.com | 12 | 6.0% |
| usnews.com | 12 | 6.0% |
| stockbrokers.com | 11 | 5.5% |
| wsj.com | 10 | 5.0% |
| nerdwallet.com | 10 | 5.0% |
No single website dominated the transition.
Money.com and Investopedia each appeared newly in 15.0% of Reddit-loss scenarios. YouTube appeared in 13.5%, Forbes in 13.0%, and Yahoo in 12.0%.
That pattern matters because it argues against a simple replacement narrative. The lost Reddit citations were redistributed across several source classes:
- large financial publishers such as Money.com, Investopedia, Forbes, Yahoo and The Wall Street Journal;
- video sources such as YouTube;
- investing specialists such as The Motley Fool, Fidelity, StockBrokers.com and Betterment;
- crypto specialists and first-party platforms such as Coin Bureau, Kraken, Crypto.com and Trezor;
- and broad search or platform-owned sources such as Google.
The evidence supports source redistribution, not a one-for-one transfer from Reddit to one dominant publisher.

How This Family Compares With the Broader Reddit Decline
The overall High-Stakes Consumer Decisions study found Reddit citation-event share fell 43.3% from July to September across the balanced 46-vertical panel.
This investing, retirement, mortgage and financial family declined 33.1%, which is materially milder than the overall decline and milder than the roughly 43% to 46% declines measured in the insurance and credit/debt/banking/lending families.
That does not mean this family was stable. All 11 verticals declined, and the matched test still showed nearly four losses per gain. It means the size of the decline differed by category.
This is an important warning against turning one Reddit citation trend into a universal number. Category mix changes the answer.
Questions this section answers: Is the investing and mortgage family an outlier? How does its Reddit decline compare with credit, insurance and the overall high-stakes panel? Why can the direction be consistent while the size of the decline differs?
Why a 33.1% decline is still commercially meaningful
A one-third reduction in citation-event share can materially alter the source environment around high-intent financial answers even when Reddit remains prominent in absolute terms. The effect is especially important in categories where community discussion has been used to supply experiential context that traditional publishers and company-owned pages often do not provide.
For a consumer comparing a crypto wallet, the missing Reddit citation may remove a firsthand account about security setup, customer support or recovery experience. For a mortgage query, it may remove a discussion of closing friction, underwriting expectations or rate-lock problems. For an investing platform, it may remove user commentary about interface quality, fees or account transfer issues.
That does not make the remaining sources worse. It changes the mix of evidence visible to the user. As the source portfolio shifts toward editorial publishers, video, first-party platforms and specialist sites, brands should expect the language and evidence included in AI answers to change as well.
The study therefore has implications beyond Reddit itself. It shows that source-type composition can move in a relatively short period. A brand that measures only its own mention rate can miss this background change, even though the changing source environment may later affect recommendation language or which competitors are discussed.

Prior Research and Why the Numbers Differ
PromptWatch: a sharp ChatGPT-specific break
PromptWatch reported that Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations averaged 3.83% from July 18 through August 7, 2026, then fell to 0.52% by August 14-17, an 86.4% relative decline. It reported much gentler Reddit declines on Google's AI surfaces over roughly the same period.
Source: PromptWatch, Why Did ChatGPT Stop Citing Reddit? Inside the August 2026 Citation Collapse
That directional pattern is consistent with this family: ChatGPT declined much more sharply than Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. The percentages should not be merged because the studies use different query populations, date windows, capture systems and denominators.
Ahrefs: Reddit remained a major broad source in September
Ahrefs' September 2026 broad U.S. all-topic studies placed Reddit at 16.8% mention share in ChatGPT, 17.9% in Google AI Mode, 18.5% in Google AI Overviews, 28.5% in Gemini and 21.6% in Perplexity. Reddit ranked #1 in ChatGPT, AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity, and #2 in AI Overviews.
Sources: Ahrefs ChatGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity
That does not contradict this study. Ahrefs measures a broad all-topic universe with a different mention-share denominator. Reddit can remain a leading broad-web source while losing direct citation share inside a narrower high-intent financial decision market.
Tinuiti: social citation share was not moving uniformly
Tinuiti's Q3 2026 citation report found that most tracked AI platforms were at or near all-time highs in broader social citation share, with Perplexity a notable exception.
Source: Tinuiti, AI Citation Trends Report Q3 2026
This study is not a social-media aggregate. It isolates Reddit and studies investing, retirement, mortgage and related financial decisions. The relevant agreement is methodological: social-source behavior changes by platform and category.
BrightEdge: finance source concentration differs sharply by engine
BrightEdge's August 31, 2026 finance analysis found that the leading source appeared in about 51% of tracked Google AI Overviews finance prompts, compared with 18% for the fifth-ranked source. On ChatGPT, the top five were much flatter at roughly 19%, 15%, 14%, 14% and 11%.
BrightEdge's source-ranking study and this Reddit trend study use different prompt sets, metrics and time structures. The useful comparison is structural: finance source behavior differs by platform, and concentration on one engine should not be assumed to transfer to another.
Together, the outside research reinforces the same operating lesson: AI citation trends depend heavily on platform, category, time window and denominator.

Why AI Citation Studies Can Disagree Without Either Being Wrong
AI citation research is unusually sensitive to study design.
1. Cross-sectional rankings and longitudinal trends are different questions
A September leaderboard asks which domains are largest now. A July-to-September study asks which domains gained or lost share. The same domain can rank #1 and still be declining.
2. Category mix changes source behavior
Crypto wallets, mortgages, robo-advisors and structured settlements do not draw from identical source ecosystems. Combining them with recipes, sports, travel and software would produce a different domain mix.
3. Citation denominators differ
This study reports Reddit citation events as a share of all captured citation events and also reports response-level citation coverage. Other studies may calculate share only among top sources, only among cited answers, or as a percentage of prompts.
4. Platform capture matters
ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot expose citations differently. Any study that blends them without preserving platform identity can obscure real platform changes.
5. Source normalization matters
Subdomains, redirects, image hosts, map infrastructure and search wrappers can materially alter domain counts if they are not handled consistently.
6. Prompt matching matters
The strict matched analysis in this study controls for prompt and platform surface. An unmatched monthly comparison can reflect both source behavior and changes in which prompts were captured.
What This Means for Financial Publishers
Reddit citation visibility should not be sold as a permanent advantage
A publisher whose AI-search narrative depends on appearing next to Reddit or displacing Reddit should expect the underlying source market to change.
Demonstrate platform-specific reach
A finance publisher may gain visibility on ChatGPT while remaining flat on Google AI Mode, or vice versa. Publisher sales materials should therefore show platform-specific citation coverage rather than one blended AI visibility number.
Specialist authority remains valuable
The replacement set includes financial specialists, crypto specialists, investment platforms and first-party providers. That is commercially useful evidence that category expertise can surface even when a broad community source declines.
Build evidence around prompt clusters
A mortgage publisher should prove visibility on mortgage and refinance prompts. A crypto publisher should prove visibility on exchange and wallet prompts. Aggregate finance visibility is less actionable than high-intent prompt-cluster coverage.
Want the full Authority Index
The paid deep-dive adds competitor threat profiles, the gap matrix, citation failure map, platform-by-platform recovery roadmap, and client-specific economic modeling.
What This Means for CMOs and Brands
1. Diversify earned visibility
Do not rely on Reddit as the only third-party route into AI answers. Build visibility across editorial publishers, specialists, video, community discussion and strong first-party content.
2. Measure ChatGPT separately
The ChatGPT decline in this family was far larger than the Google declines. A program can therefore look healthy in a blended dashboard while losing a major source route on one platform.
3. Monitor the vertical, not just the family average
Structured Settlements, Reverse Mortgage and Mortgage declined much more sharply than Crypto Wallets. The right monitoring level is category plus prompt cluster plus platform.
4. Separate citation from recommendation
A Reddit citation can disappear without a brand losing recommendation share, and a brand can be recommended without Reddit being cited. Track both layers independently.
5. Treat source strategy as a portfolio
The replacement analysis shows no single destination absorbed Reddit's lost share. Brands should therefore build multiple defensible source paths rather than trying to identify one new "winning" publisher.
Questions this section answers: What should a financial CMO change now? Which metrics should be separated by platform and vertical? How should publisher outreach and Reddit strategy change as source share is redistributed?
6. Preserve authentic Reddit visibility, but do not confuse it with a citation guarantee
Nothing in this study argues for abandoning Reddit. Consumers still use Reddit to discuss brokers, wallets, exchanges, lenders, advisers and retirement products. Those discussions can shape brand reputation and may still be encountered by AI systems even when Reddit is not displayed in the final citation list.
The operational lesson is narrower: organic Reddit presence should be treated as one component of a wider authority portfolio, not as a guaranteed citation mechanism.
7. Re-baseline after major platform changes
The ChatGPT break is large enough that pre-August benchmarks can become misleading. A dashboard that celebrates recovery to a July citation rate may be measuring against a source regime that no longer exists. Teams should retain historical data, but operational targets should be recalibrated after material platform shifts.
8. Use source loss as a diagnostic signal
When a source such as Reddit loses share, brands should inspect which source types are gaining within the same prompt cluster. If first-party domains gain, owned-content depth and crawlability may matter more. If specialist publishers gain, earned media and expert inclusion may become more valuable. If YouTube gains, structured video distribution may deserve more investment.
The replacement analysis in this article is descriptive, not causal, but it provides a practical shortlist of source classes worth monitoring.

Methodology
Source archive
The study uses the frozen LLM Authority Index July, August and September 2026 observation archive used throughout the High-Stakes Consumer Decisions research series.
The archive contains observations from six platform families:
- ChatGPT
- Google AI Overviews
- Google AI Mode
- Gemini
- Perplexity
- Microsoft Copilot
Eligible months
Only July, August and September 2026 observations are included.
Explicit extraction failures
Observations carrying explicit extraction-failure markers are excluded before analysis.
Exact-repeat anti-double-counting
An observation is treated as an exact repeat when the following fields are identical:
- report month;
- exact raw platform/source surface;
- normalized prompt text using Unicode NFKC, case-folding, whitespace collapse and trim;
- exact set of original citation URLs.
Only one copy of an exact repeat is retained for the primary analysis. This is an anti-double-counting rule. It is not evidence that a prompt was run only once in the original data-collection process.
Domain normalization
Citation URLs are parsed to hostname, lowercased, stripped of www., and consolidated to registrable domains using the Public Suffix List.
Examples include:
money.usnews.com->usnews.comfinance.yahoo.com->yahoo.compharmacy.amazon.com->amazon.com
Obvious infrastructure and navigation artifacts are excluded, including known image hosts, map infrastructure, Bing image/map wrappers and similar non-editorial technical surfaces.
Primary metric: Reddit citation-event share
For each month:
Reddit citation-event share = Reddit citation events / all eligible citation events
A response can contribute more than one Reddit citation event if it cites multiple Reddit URLs.
Secondary metric: Reddit response citation coverage
Reddit response citation coverage = eligible responses citing Reddit at least once / all eligible responses
Reddit counts at most once per response for this metric.
Balanced endpoint panel
The July-to-September family endpoint uses verticals present in both months. All 11 family verticals were present at both endpoints, so no vertical was excluded for missing July data.
Strict matched-prompt test
Matched scenarios require the same normalized prompt and exact raw platform surface in July and September, with exactly one eligible observation in each month after exact-repeat anti-double-counting.
This produces 1,934 matched scenarios.
Replacement-source analysis
For every matched scenario that cited Reddit in July but not September, the study identifies registrable domains present in the September citation set that were absent from the matched July citation set.
A newly appearing domain is not assumed to have caused Reddit's disappearance or to be a direct substitute. The analysis measures co-occurring source-set change only.

Limitations
- Visible citations are not complete retrieval traces. A platform can consult a source without displaying it.
- Citation does not equal recommendation. A source can be cited without causing a company recommendation.
- Prompt sets are commercially focused. Results should not be generalized to all financial or investment questions.
- Source filename labels are analytical groupings. They are not 11 statistically independent industries.
- AI systems are dynamic. A July-to-September result can change again in October.
- Platform interfaces expose citations differently. Cross-platform metrics are normalized as carefully as possible but are not generated from identical product architectures.
- Replacement analysis is descriptive. Newly appearing domains are not proven substitutes for Reddit.
- Matched analysis trades breadth for control. It excludes ambiguous prompt-surface keys that do not resolve to exactly one endpoint observation per month.
Commercial Relationship and Research Disclosure
LLM Authority Index is part of a business ecosystem that provides AI visibility, research, and marketing services. Affiliated businesses may have current or historical commercial relationships with companies or publishers that appear in the dataset.
Commercial relationships are not inputs to ranking or trend methodology. Domains are included based on observed citation data. A ranking does not constitute an endorsement, and a commercial relationship should not be interpreted as the cause of a measured citation result.
