LLM Authority Index Research | High-Stakes Consumer Decisions | Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending | Perplexity | July-September 2026
Reddit lost substantial direct citation visibility in Perplexity across high-stakes credit, debt, banking and lending questions during the third quarter of 2026.
On the balanced financial panel, using only the 13 verticals measured in both July and September, Reddit's share of visible Perplexity citation events fell from 4.46% to 1.02%, a 77.2% relative decline. The share of Perplexity responses containing at least one Reddit citation fell from 9.96% to 1.51%, an 84.9% relative decline.
A stricter like-for-like test produced an even sharper result. Across 139 exact prompt-plus-Perplexity scenarios observed in both July and September, 8 scenarios lost Reddit, 0 gained Reddit, 0 retained Reddit and 131 cited Reddit in neither month. Matched Reddit response coverage therefore fell from 5.76% to 0.00%.
The exact two-sided McNemar test for the eight discordant matched pairs is p = 0.0078125. The matched result is statistically significant, but the sample is small enough that the commercial interpretation should focus on the direction, the disappearance of all eight July citations, and the need for continued measurement rather than on a single p-value.
The broader three-month Perplexity financial slice still shows that Reddit mattered during the quarter. Across 1,728 eligible responses, Reddit was cited in 106 responses, or 6.13%, and generated 120 of 3,751 public-facing citation events, or approximately 3.20%. Reddit ranked #9 across the full three-month financial source market, but its monthly rank moved from #4 in July to #4 in August and then #23 in September.
That combination is commercially important. A three-month aggregate can make Reddit look like a durable Top 10 Perplexity source even while the most recent monthly slice shows a major break.
Important: This study measures visible citations in a defined high-stakes commercial query panel. It does not measure hidden model training data, private retrieval signals or recommendation causality. A source can influence an answer without appearing as a visible citation, and a visible citation does not prove that the source caused a brand mention or recommendation.

Answer Capsule
Did Reddit lose citation visibility in Perplexity for high-stakes credit, debt, banking and lending decisions from July to September 2026? Yes. On the balanced 13-vertical financial panel, Reddit's Perplexity citation-event share fell 77.2%, from 4.46% to 1.02%, while response citation coverage fell 84.9%, from 9.96% to 1.51%. In the strict matched test, all 8 July Reddit-positive scenarios lost Reddit by September, with 0 gains among 139 matched scenarios. Reddit still ranked #9 across the full three-month Perplexity financial source market, but its monthly rank fell from #4 to #23 by September.
Key Findings
- Balanced Reddit citation-event share in Perplexity fell from 4.46% in July to 1.02% in September, down 77.2%.
- Balanced Reddit response citation coverage fell from 9.96% to 1.51%, down 84.9%.
- The strict matched panel contained 139 exact prompt-plus-Perplexity scenarios.
- In those matched scenarios, Reddit recorded 8 losses, 0 gains, 0 persistent citations and 131 neither-month scenarios.
- Matched Reddit response coverage fell from 5.76% to 0.00%, a 100% relative decline.
- The exact two-sided McNemar result is p = 0.0078125.
- Across the full three-month Perplexity financial slice, Reddit was cited in 106 of 1,728 responses, or 6.13%.
- Reddit generated 120 of 3,751 public-facing citation events, approximately 3.20% of the three-month Perplexity financial citation pool.
- Reddit ranked #9 overall for the three-month financial slice.
- Reddit's monthly rank moved #4 in July, #4 in August and #23 in September.
- The Perplexity financial source market contained 356 distinct registrable domains after the public source-cleaning rules were applied.
- The public ranking excluded 68 technical CDN or static-asset citation entries rather than treating them as editorial publishers.
- The full financial family contains 16 source vertical labels, while the balanced July-to-September endpoint uses 13 because Home Equity Loans, Savings Account and Student Loan Refinance were not present in the July source corpus.
- Perplexity's Reddit decline was steeper than the blended financial-family decline because other platforms, especially Google's AI surfaces, retained more Reddit visibility over the same endpoint period.
- Current external research does not support treating one universal Reddit citation rate as a benchmark. Broad all-topic studies can still show Reddit as a leading Perplexity source while this narrower high-stakes financial panel shows a sharp decline.

Questions This Study Answers
- Did Reddit's direct citation role in Perplexity weaken for high-intent financial consumer questions?
- Does the decline survive a strict comparison of the same prompt on the same platform at both endpoints?
- How can Reddit still rank highly in broad Perplexity studies while falling sharply inside this high-stakes financial decision panel?
Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions
Article 55 isolates one source, Reddit, inside one platform, Perplexity, and one commercial decision family, Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending. That narrow design makes the study useful for day-to-day AI search marketing because it separates measurements that are easy to blur together:
- Where does Reddit rank inside the Perplexity financial source market?
- How often is Reddit cited, measured both as citation-event share and response citation coverage?
- Does Reddit persist when the exact prompt and Perplexity surface are held constant?
In the three-month Perplexity Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending source study, Reddit still ranked #9 overall at 6.13% response citation coverage. That aggregate position can coexist with a sharp current-state break: Reddit ranked #4 in July, #4 in August and #23 in September.
The balanced 13-vertical endpoint is substantially weaker. Reddit citation-event share fell 77.2%, from 4.46% to 1.02%, while response citation coverage fell 84.9%, from 9.96% to 1.51%. In the strict matched set, all 8 July Reddit-positive scenarios lost Reddit, none gained it, and matched coverage fell from 5.76% to 0.00%.
For publishers, that means a quarter-wide Top 10 rank should not be presented as proof of current visibility. For banks, lenders, fintechs and CMOs, it means source strategy should be monitored with a fixed prompt panel and separate measures for rank, coverage, event share, matched persistence and source-market turnover.
Article 55 also sits inside a source market that is highly concentrated but not highly persistent. The Perplexity financial Top 100 account for 87.27% of domain-response appearances, and the Top 25 account for 66.40%, yet only 53 domains remained in the monthly Top 100 across July, August and September. Median monthly Top 100 Jaccard similarity was only 42.9%. Concentration and stability are therefore not the same thing.
That broader source rotation does not explain away the Reddit result. The same-prompt test produced 8 losses and zero gains, and September monthly rank fell nineteen places from July, from #4 to #23. The evidence supports a source-specific decline occurring inside a Perplexity financial source market that was already changing materially.
The platform comparison matters as well. The parent Credit study reports Reddit citation-event share declines of 77.2% in Perplexity, 70.6% in ChatGPT, 37.6% in Google AI Mode, 25.5% in Google AI Overviews and 37.6% in Gemini. Microsoft Copilot had no measured Reddit citation events at either endpoint in the captured Credit panel. One blended "Reddit visibility in AI" score would hide those differences.
The broader Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending Citation Authority Study reports 77.0% median monthly Top 100 persistence, 44.9% median cross-platform Top 100 portability, and an approximate 32.1 percentage-point Persistence-Portability Gap. It also reports 26 domains appearing in all six final platform Top 100 lists, from 222 distinct domains in the six-platform union.
Perplexity's own Credit source market answers a narrower question. Its 42.9% median monthly Top 100 persistence is much lower than the family-level persistence figure. The final Credit child-study Top 100 lists show Perplexity sharing 73 domains with Google AI Overviews, 73 with Google AI Mode, 68 with Gemini, 59 with ChatGPT and 47 with Microsoft Copilot.
The Persistence-Portability Gap framework helps interpret Article 55 correctly: decision-family source authority can be relatively persistent over time while fragmenting across engines, even as one platform's source market rotates much faster and one individual source inside it declines more sharply. Article 55 should not manufacture a Perplexity-specific gap by subtracting 42.9% from a single pairwise platform overlap because those comparison structures are different.
Citation visibility should remain separate from brand mentions, recommendation rate, rank, sentiment, citation-recommendation coupling and downstream business outcomes. A Reddit citation is visible evidence of sourcing, not proof that Reddit caused a lender, bank, card, fintech or debt-relief recommendation.
Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings
| Research finding | What financial publishers can responsibly do or say | What brands and CMOs can reasonably do |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit ranked #9 across the three-month Perplexity financial source study but fell from monthly #4 to #23 | "Reddit remained a meaningful aggregate source, but its current-month Perplexity visibility weakened sharply." | Report aggregate authority and current-month visibility separately. |
| Balanced Reddit event share fell 77.2% and response coverage fell 84.9% | "Both direct citation metrics declined sharply on the same 13-vertical endpoint." | Maintain a fixed Perplexity financial prompt panel and track both metrics monthly. |
| The strict matched set produced 8 losses and 0 gains | "The decline survives a same-prompt, same-surface comparison." | Add matched loss/gain reporting instead of relying only on leaderboard rank or share-of-voice snapshots. |
| Exact McNemar p is 0.0078125 | "The matched loss-only pattern is statistically detectable in this small sample." | Treat it as evidence of directional change, while continuing measurement because only eight discordant pairs drive the test. |
| The Top 100 capture 87.27% of appearances, but median monthly persistence is only 42.9% | "Perplexity's financial source market is concentrated but rotates materially over time." | Refresh source-priority lists on a fixed cadence rather than assuming a concentrated market is a stable market. |
| Only 49 Credit Top 100 domains also appear in Perplexity's broader High-Stakes Top 100 | "Category-specific Perplexity authority differs materially from broad platform authority." | Use financial-category source maps rather than generic Perplexity leaderboards for outreach and partnership planning. |
| Perplexity shares 73 Credit Top 100 domains with each Google AI surface but only 47 with Copilot | "Source portability varies materially by platform pair." | Maintain a shared cross-platform core plus Perplexity-specific and engine-specific priorities. |
| Parent replacement analysis is fragmented and not Perplexity-only | "No evidence here supports calling one publisher the replacement for Reddit." | Diversify earned-source strategy instead of moving budget from Reddit to one assumed substitute. |
| The Credit family shows 77.0% persistence but 44.9% portability | "The broader financial source layer is more durable over time than universally transferable across engines." | Separate source-specific drift, platform-category churn, family persistence and cross-platform portability. |
| Citation visibility is not recommendation causality | "This study measures source presence, not endorsement." | Track citations separately from brand mentions, recommendations, ranking, sentiment and conversion outcomes. |

Where Article 55 Fits in the High-Stakes Consumer Decisions Corpus
Article 55 is a child analysis of two parent studies:
- the Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending Reddit decline study, which provides the balanced family endpoint and cross-platform matched comparison; and
- the Perplexity Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending source study, which provides the surrounding three-month source market, including Reddit's #9 aggregate rank and 6.13% response coverage, 53 domains present in all three monthly Top 100s and 42.9% median monthly Top 100 persistence.
The platform-level context comes from the overall Perplexity Top 100 study. The broader interpretation comes from the 2026 AI Citation Authority Study, the overall Reddit decline study, the cross-platform citation-overlap study, the citation-drift study, and the Persistence-Portability Gap framework. Those studies answer different questions and should not be collapsed into one visibility score.
The Core Finding: Reddit's Balanced Perplexity Citation Share Fell More Than 77%
Questions This Section Answers
- How large was the July-to-September decline after holding the financial vertical set constant?
- Did both citation-event share and response coverage move in the same direction?
- Could September-only verticals explain the decline?
The primary endpoint comparison uses the 13 Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending verticals represented in both July and September 2026. Three additional financial verticals appear later in the quarter, but they are excluded from the balanced endpoint so that category expansion does not distort the trend.
| Metric | July 2026 | September 2026 | Relative change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reddit share of Perplexity citation events | 4.46% | 1.02% | -77.2% |
| Perplexity responses citing Reddit | 9.96% | 1.51% | -84.9% |
The decline is large under both denominators.
Citation-event share asks what portion of all eligible public citation occurrences belonged to Reddit. Response citation coverage asks what portion of eligible Perplexity answers cited Reddit at least once. The first metric can be affected by how many source links appear in each response. The second counts Reddit no more than once per answer.
Both moved sharply downward.
The balanced design also removes a straightforward composition explanation. Home Equity Loans, Savings Account and Student Loan Refinance appear in the September source universe but not in July. Excluding them still leaves Reddit with a 77.2% event-share decline and an 84.9% response-coverage decline.

The Monthly Rank Shows Why Quarter-Wide Averages Can Mislead
Questions This Section Answers
- Did Reddit disappear from Perplexity for the entire quarter?
- What happened to Reddit's rank over time?
- Why is the three-month aggregate not a sufficient current-state KPI?
Across the full July-September Perplexity financial slice, Reddit still looks substantial.
| Three-month Perplexity financial metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Eligible responses | 1,728 |
| Public-facing citation events | 3,751 |
| Distinct registrable domains | 356 |
| Domain-response appearances | 3,574 |
| Reddit-citing responses | 106 |
| Reddit response coverage | 6.13% |
| Reddit citation events | 120 |
| Reddit event share | 3.20% |
| Reddit overall rank | #9 |
| Reddit vertical breadth | 13 source verticals |
| Technical citation entries excluded from public ranking | 68 |
That quarter-wide view is accurate, but it compresses a major change.
| Month | Reddit rank in Perplexity financial source market |
|---|---|
| July 2026 | #4 |
| August 2026 | #4 |
| September 2026 | #23 |
Reddit therefore remained a Top 10 source across the quarter because its July and August visibility was strong enough to lift the aggregate. By September, however, its monthly position had fallen nineteen places from July.
For brands, publishers and analytics teams, this is a warning against treating quarter-wide citation coverage as a current-state proxy. A source can look strategically important in a pooled dataset while its most recent visibility has already changed materially.
The Strict Matched Test Found Eight Reddit Losses and Zero Gains
Questions This Section Answers
- Did Reddit decline when the exact prompt and platform were held constant?
- How many matched scenarios gained Reddit in September?
- Is the paired loss-gain imbalance statistically distinguishable from a symmetric pattern?
The strict matched analysis is narrower than the balanced category test.
A scenario qualifies only when the same normalized prompt on the same Perplexity surface has one eligible analytical observation in July and one in September under the project's matching rules.
139 scenarios met that contract.
| July Reddit citation | September Reddit citation | Matched scenarios |
|---|---|---|
| Yes | Yes | 0 |
| Yes | No | 8 |
| No | Yes | 0 |
| No | No | 131 |
| Total | 139 |
Matched Reddit response coverage moved from 5.76% in July to 0.00% in September.
All eight matched July Reddit-positive scenarios became Reddit-negative by September. None of the 131 July Reddit-negative scenarios gained a Reddit citation.
For the eight discordant pairs, the exact two-sided McNemar result is p = 0.0078125.
The matched panel is not a market-share sample and should not be interpreted as one. Its value is experimental control. It asks a narrow question: when the prompt and platform surface were held constant, did Reddit tend to persist, disappear or newly appear?
In this financial Perplexity subset, it disappeared in all eight cases where it had been present at the July endpoint.

Reddit Fell While Perplexity's Financial Citation Market Remained Broad and Competitive
Questions This Section Answers
- Was Reddit's decline simply the result of Perplexity having very few financial sources?
- Which publishers led the three-month Perplexity financial source market?
- Did Reddit remain commercially relevant despite its September decline?
Perplexity continued to cite a large and varied source universe. After cleaning, the three-month financial slice contained 356 distinct registrable domains and 3,751 public-facing citation events.
The Top 10 by response citation coverage were:
| Rank | Domain | Response citation coverage |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | nerdwallet.com | 19.68% |
| 2 | bankrate.com | 15.80% |
| 3 | cnbc.com | 12.33% |
| 4 | money.com | 8.45% |
| 5 | lendingtree.com | 7.75% |
| 6 | investopedia.com | 7.18% |
| 7 | forbes.com | 7.12% |
| 8 | businessinsider.com | 6.66% |
| 9 | reddit.com | 6.13% |
| 10 | usnews.com | 5.79% |
This matters for interpretation.
The data does not show that Perplexity stopped citing third-party financial information. It shows that Reddit lost direct citation visibility inside a source market that continued to cite financial publishers, comparison sites, business media and specialist domains.
Reddit also remained broad across the quarter, appearing across 13 financial source verticals. Its aggregate #9 position means it should not be described as irrelevant to Perplexity financial answers. The more precise conclusion is that Reddit's direct visible citation role became much less stable by the September endpoint.
The Financial Result Differs Sharply by AI Platform
Questions This Section Answers
- Was the Reddit decline equally large across AI platforms?
- How did Perplexity compare with ChatGPT and Google's AI surfaces?
- Why should financial teams avoid a single blended Reddit KPI?
The parent financial study found that Reddit declined across the balanced category, but the size of the change varied materially by platform.
| Platform | July Reddit event share | September Reddit event share | Relative change | Matched losses | Matched gains |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Perplexity | 4.46% | 1.02% | -77.2% | 8 | 0 |
| ChatGPT | 9.96% | 2.93% | -70.6% | 52 | 5 |
| Google AI Mode | 3.89% | 2.43% | -37.6% | 50 | 16 |
| Google AI Overviews | 3.87% | about 2.9% | about -25% | 40 | 23 |
Perplexity and ChatGPT showed the steepest endpoint declines in the financial family, while Google's two AI search surfaces retained materially more Reddit visibility.
This is one of the most commercially important findings in the series. "Reddit visibility in AI" is not one metric.
A financial brand can lose direct Reddit citations in Perplexity while still seeing Reddit appear materially more often in Google AI Mode or Google AI Overviews. The correct unit of analysis is therefore platform plus prompt cluster plus time period, not a blended source score.

What Did Perplexity Cite Instead?
Questions This Section Answers
- Does this study identify one domain that replaced Reddit in Perplexity?
- Can the September decline be attributed to NerdWallet, Bankrate or another single publisher?
- What can brands safely conclude from the available replacement evidence?
This child study does not claim that one publisher replaced Reddit in the eight matched Perplexity loss scenarios.
The parent financial-family analysis examined Reddit-loss scenarios across all tracked platforms and found a fragmented pattern rather than a one-for-one substitution. Forbes, NerdWallet, Bankrate, Experian, YouTube, The Wall Street Journal, Yahoo, CNBC, MoneyLion, Credible, Investopedia and Finder all appeared among newly cited September domains, but no single source dominated the loss set.
That parent analysis includes multiple AI platforms and should not be re-labeled as a Perplexity-only replacement table.
For the Perplexity child analysis, the defensible conclusion is narrower: Reddit disappeared from eight matched July-positive scenarios and no matched scenario gained Reddit. At the same time, Perplexity's broader financial source market remained distributed across hundreds of domains and was led by NerdWallet, Bankrate, CNBC, Money.com and LendingTree.
The evidence supports source redistribution, not a claim that one publisher became "the new Reddit."
Which Financial Verticals Are Represented?
The full Perplexity Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending source study contains 16 source vertical labels:
- Auto Refinance Loans
- Bad Credit Loans
- Best Banks
- Certificates of Deposits
- Credit Cards
- Credit Cards for Building Credit
- Credit Monitoring
- Credit Repair
- Debt Relief & Consolidation
- Home Equity Loans
- Money Market Accounts
- Personal Loans and Online Lenders
- Savings Account
- Student Loan Refinance
- Student Loans
- Tax Relief
The balanced July-to-September endpoint uses 13 of those verticals.
The three source labels without July data are:
- Home Equity Loans
- Savings Account
- Student Loan Refinance
Those missing July verticals are not treated as zero. They remain part of the broader three-month Perplexity financial source market but are excluded from the strict endpoint comparison.
The three-month source ranking shows Reddit appearing across 13 of the 16 source labels. In the published vertical-leader analysis, Reddit was especially visible in several high-intent clusters, including Credit Cards, where its three-month response coverage was 15.0%, Credit Cards for Building Credit at 10.7%, and Best Banks at 7.3%.
Those three-month vertical figures should not be confused with September-only current-state rates. They are useful for identifying where Reddit had meaningful quarter-wide exposure, not for claiming that the same visibility persisted at the endpoint.

What This Means for Financial Brands and CMOs
Questions This Section Answers
- Should financial brands still invest in Reddit if Perplexity citations declined?
- What should teams measure instead of one aggregate AI visibility score?
- How should earned-media strategy change when one source becomes less stable?
1. Treat Reddit as one authority surface, not the entire authority strategy
Reddit can still contribute consumer language, product experience, community discussion and visible citations. But the Perplexity financial data shows that direct citation value can change sharply within one quarter.
A strategy that depends on Reddit maintaining a fixed citation rate is fragile.
2. Separate Perplexity from Google and ChatGPT measurement
The same source behaved very differently across platforms. Track Reddit coverage separately in Perplexity, ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews.
3. Track the high-intent prompts that drive commercial value
Financial brands should not treat "credit" or "banking" as one undifferentiated category. Credit Cards, Credit Repair, Personal Loans, Best Banks, Student Loans and Tax Relief have different publisher ecosystems and different commercial intent.
4. Build third-party source diversity
The Perplexity financial Top 10 includes NerdWallet, Bankrate, CNBC, Money.com, LendingTree, Investopedia, Forbes, Business Insider, Reddit and U.S. News. No single source is a complete authority strategy.
5. Separate citation visibility from recommendation visibility
A source disappearing from the citation list does not prove that a brand will stop being mentioned. A source appearing does not prove that it caused a recommendation.
Track source citations, brand mentions, recommendation rate, comparison inclusion, sentiment and first-party citation coverage as separate variables.
What This Means for Financial Publishers
Perplexity's financial source market rewards both broad category publishers and vertical specialists.
For publishers, the Reddit decline creates an opportunity to measure whether editorial domains are gaining visibility in the same commercial prompt clusters, but the evidence does not justify claiming that Perplexity has transferred Reddit's role to any one publisher.
Useful publisher metrics include:
- response citation coverage by financial vertical;
- citation events by prompt cluster;
- monthly rank persistence;
- URL-level citation recurrence;
- cross-platform coverage;
- domain overlap between Perplexity and other AI engines; and
- whether increased citation visibility is accompanied by increased brand recommendation exposure.
The strongest commercial positioning is measured category authority, not a claim that Perplexity "trusts" a publisher or that a citation automatically drives a recommendation.

How This Study Relates to Prior Reddit and Perplexity Citation Research
Independent research shows why Article 55 should be read as a category-specific, time-specific Perplexity result rather than a universal claim about Reddit.
Ahrefs' September 2026 broad U.S. Perplexity leaderboard ranked Reddit #1 at 21.6% mention share, ahead of YouTube at 20.8%. That broad all-topic prominence can coexist with Reddit ranking #9 at 6.13% response coverage across this three-month Credit source study and falling to #23 in September. Ahrefs uses a broad U.S. query universe and a mention-share denominator, while Article 55 uses high-stakes credit, debt, banking and lending prompts and reports response citation coverage plus citation-event share.
Tinuiti's Q3 2026 AI Citation Trends Report says most tracked AI platforms were at or near Q3 highs in overall social citation share, with Perplexity as a notable exception. Tinuiti tracks a broader category mix, so the finding should not be converted into a Reddit-specific financial percentage. It is directionally consistent with Article 55's evidence that Reddit weakened inside this Perplexity financial panel.
Tinuiti's Q1 2026 research provides useful historical context. In January, it reported that social media produced about 31% of Perplexity citations in its tracked categories and that Reddit alone accounted for about 24% of citations. The category mix and time period are different, but the result shows that strong Reddit prominence on Perplexity earlier in 2026 is compatible with a later category-specific decline.
Wellows reports that across 804,058 Perplexity answers and 3.87 million citations from September 2025 through May 2026, Reddit was the #1 most-cited domain in its dataset. Again, this is a broader and earlier panel. Its value is historical context, not a benchmark denominator for Article 55.
Wellows' separate cross-engine overlap study analyzed 22.7 million citations from January through June 2026 and found that 69.9% of the sources Perplexity cited were not cited by any of the other four engines on the same question. That result uses a different query population and matching design, but it reinforces the same operating principle as the LLM Authority Index portability work: Perplexity should be measured as its own source environment.
Taken together, the outside research strengthens the case for measurement discipline, not a universal Reddit narrative. The defensible comparison is direction, platform specificity, query population, time period and denominator, not decimal-point equivalence across unrelated panels.

Why AI Citation Studies Can Disagree
Questions This Section Answers
- Why can one study rank Reddit first while another shows Reddit falling more than 80%?
- Which methodological choices can change the result most?
- What should marketers compare before using an external benchmark?
Different AI citation studies can produce very different Reddit numbers without one of them necessarily being wrong.
Query population
A broad all-topic Perplexity study can contain software, travel, consumer products, entertainment, troubleshooting, local questions and general knowledge. Article 55 contains high-stakes credit, debt, banking and lending decisions.
Time period
A pooled September 2025 through May 2026 study, a July through September 2026 trend study and a single September 2026 snapshot are different measurements.
Denominator
Article 55 reports both citation-event share and response citation coverage. Ahrefs reports mention share under its own ranking framework. Tinuiti reports category and platform citation shares. Those values should not be compared as if they were the same metric.
Platform surface
Article 55 isolates Perplexity. Blended AI studies can hide the fact that Reddit moved much more sharply in Perplexity and ChatGPT than in Google's AI surfaces.
Category composition
September contains three Credit source labels that are absent in July. The balanced endpoint excludes them.
Missing versus zero
Home Equity Loans, Savings Account and Student Loan Refinance are missing from the July source corpus. They are not treated as zero visibility.
Technical-source cleanup
The Perplexity Credit ranking excludes 68 technical CDN and static-asset citation entries from the public publisher analysis. Raw exports that retain those technical endpoints can produce different denominators and rankings.
Prompt matching
The strict matched test requires the same normalized prompt and Perplexity surface at both endpoints. Aggregate monthly panels answer a broader but less controlled question.
Prompt weighting
The research panel is not weighted by search volume, media spend, loan volume, account openings, credit-card applications, revenue or conversion probability.
The useful question is therefore not "What is Reddit's universal Perplexity citation rate?" No such universal rate is established here. The useful question is: what did Reddit citation visibility look like for this platform, this financial decision set, this time window and this denominator?

How This Study Is Different
This article narrows the broader financial Reddit research to one platform, one high-stakes family and one fixed three-month period.
It combines:
- a 1,728-response Perplexity Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending source slice;
- a balanced 13-vertical July-to-September endpoint;
- a 139-scenario exact matched prompt-plus-platform test;
- both citation-event share and response citation coverage;
- a three-month source-market context containing 356 distinct registrable domains;
- monthly source rank movement from #4 to #4 to #23;
- explicit treatment of the three financial labels missing from July; and
- comparison with current external Perplexity citation research using different query populations and denominators.
The narrow research question is:
How stable was Reddit as a directly cited source in Perplexity for consequential credit, debt, banking and lending consumer decisions from July through September 2026?
Methodology
Source archive
This study uses the frozen July-September 2026 LLM Authority Index High-Stakes Consumer Decisions corpus underlying the Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending source studies and the parent Reddit decline analysis.
The preserved raw archive totals are larger than the screened analytical samples. Raw archive totals should not be substituted for the filtered Perplexity financial denominators reported here.
Platform filter
Only observations assigned to the Perplexity platform family are included in this child article.
Category filter
Observations are included when their source membership belongs to the Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending family.
Extraction failures
Observations explicitly marked as extraction failures are excluded from eligible response denominators.
Exact analytical repeat handling
Exact analytical repeats are controlled using the project's documented repeat logic so that duplicate records do not inflate source coverage.
Prompt normalization
Prompt matching uses normalized text with Unicode NFKC normalization, case folding, whitespace collapse and trimming.
Domain normalization
Citation URLs are parsed to hostname, lowercased, stripped of leading www where applicable and consolidated to registrable domain using Public Suffix List logic.
Reddit identification
Reddit is identified at the registrable-domain level as reddit.com.
Public technical exclusions
The Perplexity financial public ranking excludes 68 technical CDN or static-asset citation entries, primarily infrastructure and thumbnail resources that should not be interpreted as editorial publishers.
Citation-event share
Reddit citation-event share = Reddit citation events / all eligible public citation events
A single response can contribute more than one Reddit citation event when multiple eligible Reddit URLs are present.
Response citation coverage
Reddit response citation coverage = eligible responses citing Reddit at least once / all eligible responses
Reddit counts no more than once per response for this metric.
Balanced endpoint
The July-to-September endpoint uses the 13 financial verticals available in both months.
Home Equity Loans, Savings Account and Student Loan Refinance are excluded from the balanced endpoint because they have no July source dataset in the frozen corpus.
Matched prompt-plus-platform test
The strict matched panel contains 139 prompt-plus-Perplexity scenarios that satisfy the project's endpoint matching contract.
The contingency table is:
- both July and September cite Reddit: 0
- July cites Reddit, September does not: 8
- July does not cite Reddit, September cites Reddit: 0
- neither month cites Reddit: 131
Matched response coverage falls from 8 / 139 = 5.76% to 0 / 139 = 0.00%.
The exact two-sided McNemar p-value is 0.0078125.
Three-month source-market context
The related Perplexity financial source ranking contains:
- 1,728 eligible responses
- 3,751 public-facing citation events
- 356 distinct registrable domains
- 3,574 domain-response appearances
- 68 excluded technical citation entries
Within that three-month slice, Reddit appears in 106 responses, generates 120 citation events, covers 13 source verticals and ranks #9 overall.

Limitations
- The study covers one frozen three-month research window and should not be treated as a permanent Perplexity rule.
- The prompt panel is designed for research comparability and high-stakes commercial relevance, not search-volume-weighted market share.
- Visible citation does not prove recommendation causality, hidden retrieval influence or training-data use.
- The strict matched Perplexity panel contains only eight discordant Reddit-positive July cases, so the direction is clear but the absolute matched count is modest.
- Three financial source labels do not have July data and are excluded from the balanced endpoint.
- Three-month aggregate coverage can conceal major monthly movement.
- Domain-level aggregation hides page-level source differences.
- Technical-source filtering is necessary and can make denominators differ from raw export totals.
- Perplexity behavior can vary by product surface, geography, personalization, rollout, retrieval system and model configuration.
- This article does not publish a Perplexity-only replacement-domain attribution table for the eight matched losses.
- External studies use different query populations, dates, markets, metrics and collection systems, so their percentages should not be treated as directly interchangeable with this study.
- Statistical significance measures the imbalance in the matched loss-gain pattern. It does not identify the cause of the change.
