LLM Authority Index Research | Google AI Mode | High-Stakes Consumer Decisions | July-September 2026
LLM Authority Index analyzed 16,777 deduplicated Google AI Mode responses across 53 high-stakes consumer source verticals from July through September 2026.
NerdWallet ranked #1 in this high-stakes panel, appearing as a cited domain in 19.2% of Google AI Mode responses. CNBC ranked #2 at 15.6%, Reddit #3 at 14.2%, Forbes #4 at 13.3%, and YouTube #5 at 11.9%.
The ranking differs sharply from broad, all-topic Google AI Mode studies. Ahrefs' September 2026 all-topic U.S. analysis ranks Reddit #1, YouTube #2, Google #3, Facebook #4, and Instagram #5. That is not inherently a contradiction. The two studies measure different populations and use different denominators. The LLM Authority Index panel is deliberately concentrated on high-stakes commercial decisions involving credit, debt, banking, insurance, investing, retirement, mortgages, health and medical services. Ahrefs Google AI Mode study
For publishers and CMOs, the useful question is therefore not, "What does Google AI Mode cite across the whole web?" It is, "What does Google AI Mode cite when consumers are making consequential commercial decisions in my market?"
This platform study is part of the 2026 AI Citation Authority Study.
Answer Capsule
Which websites are most frequently cited by Google AI Mode for high-stakes consumer decisions? In the LLM Authority Index July-September 2026 panel, NerdWallet ranked #1, followed by CNBC, Reddit, Forbes and YouTube by response-level citation coverage. The study analyzes 16,777 deduplicated Google AI Mode responses, 122,989 visible citation events, and 10,659 registrable cited domains. The Top 100 account for 46.6% of all domain-response appearances. AI Mode and Google AI Overviews share 82 of their Top 100 domains, but their ranking order and citation depth differ materially, so publishers should not treat the two Google AI surfaces as one source ecosystem.

Key Findings
- The raw archive contains 18,827 July-September Google AI Mode observations across the preserved AI Mode collection lanes.
- 415 observations were explicitly marked as extraction failures and excluded from valid-response analysis.
- After the same exact-repeat handling used in the flagship study, the Google AI Mode analysis contains 16,777 deduplicated responses.
- Those responses contain 122,989 visible citation events.
- The dataset contains 10,659 registrable cited domains and 97,029 response-level domain appearances.
- NerdWallet ranked #1 at 19.2% response coverage, followed by CNBC at 15.6%, Reddit at 14.2%, Forbes at 13.3%, and YouTube at 11.9%.
- The Top 25 domains accounted for 30.1% of domain-response appearances; the Top 100 accounted for 46.6%.
- 83 domains appeared in the Google AI Mode Top 100 in July, August and September.
- July and September shared 89 of 100 leading domains, producing 80.2% Jaccard similarity.
- Google AI Mode produced substantially more citation events per response than Google AI Overviews in this panel. This describes the observed output format and collection surface, not market share or product quality.
- Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews shared 82 of their Top 100 domains, or 69.5% Jaccard similarity.
- The category source mix varied considerably. In Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending, NerdWallet appeared in 31.2% of AI Mode responses, while GoodRx and YouTube led the Health and Medical family.

Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions
This study is research-based, but its purpose is commercial decision support.
Google AI Mode is not simply a longer version of a traditional search result. In this panel it produced far more visible citation events per response than Google AI Overviews, while drawing from a source ecosystem that is related to, but not identical with, the other major AI platforms.
For publishers, that creates a measurable commercial asset: AI Mode citation visibility can be documented by platform, category, vertical and time rather than reduced to organic rank or one blended AI visibility score.
For brands and CMOs, the operating question is different:
Which sources are already present around the consequential commercial questions our customers ask in Google AI Mode, and which of those sources deserve attention for PR, partnerships, content distribution, competitive research and AI search optimization?
Three findings matter for daily planning:
- the Top 100 account for 46.6% of domain-response appearances;
- 83 domains remained in the Google AI Mode Top 100 in July, August and September; and
- the median of the three monthly Top 100 Jaccard comparisons was 80.2%.
That is a strong persistence signal at the platform-wide portfolio level.
At the same time, the final cross-platform study shows that Google AI Mode shared 82 Top 100 domains with Google AI Overviews, 68 with Perplexity, 60 with Gemini, 53 with ChatGPT and 42 with Microsoft Copilot.
This is why the Persistence-Portability Gap framework matters. Article 10 shows a highly persistent source portfolio inside Google AI Mode. Article 03 shows that portability from that portfolio to other AI platforms varies materially.
A platform-specific gap should not be created by subtracting one pairwise platform-overlap statistic from Article 10's monthly persistence. Those measurements use different comparison structures. The defensible commercial conclusion is:
Google AI Mode has a durable source core, but a durable Google AI Mode source is not automatically a universal AI source.
Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings
| Research finding | What publishers can responsibly say | What brands and CMOs can reasonably do |
|---|---|---|
| NerdWallet, CNBC, Reddit, Forbes and YouTube lead the measured high-stakes AI Mode source map | "Our domain is measurably visible in Google AI Mode for this defined commercial decision population." | Use the platform-wide leaders as a strategic research tier, then evaluate category, vertical and prompt fit before outreach or investment. |
| The Top 100 account for 46.6% of domain-response appearances | "AI Mode has a recurring high-frequency source layer, but the market remains broader than the top few domains." | Maintain both a core source list and a specialist long-tail list. |
| 83 domains remained in the Top 100 across all three months | "Multi-month Top 100 presence is stronger evidence of persistent AI Mode visibility than a one-time screenshot." | Use recurring sources as the durable planning layer for PR, partnerships, earned media and competitive research. |
| Median monthly Top 100 persistence is 80.2% | "The leading AI Mode source portfolio was highly persistent during the study window." | Avoid rebuilding the entire AI Mode source strategy every month. Monitor movement around a stable core. |
| Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews share 82 Top 100 domains | "The two Google AI surfaces have substantial source overlap, but they are not identical." | Coordinate Google-focused source strategy while continuing to measure AI Mode and AI Overviews separately. |
| Google AI Mode shares only 53 Top 100 domains with ChatGPT and 42 with Microsoft Copilot | "Strong AI Mode visibility does not establish equivalent visibility on other AI platforms." | Maintain platform-specific publisher and source maps rather than extending Google assumptions to every engine. |
| Source leadership changes materially by decision family | "Our strongest AI Mode authority may be category-specific rather than universal." | Use the Credit, Insurance, Financial and Health child studies before deciding which publishers matter for a particular product. |
| Google-owned source visibility is rising in external AI Mode research | "Platform-owned sources can be part of the visible competitive source environment." | Track substantive Google-owned surfaces separately from third-party publishers so source strategy reflects the actual AI Mode ecosystem. |
| Broad all-topic studies rank Reddit and YouTube far above many financial publishers | "Citation leadership depends on the query population and measurement contract." | Do not import an all-topic source leaderboard directly into a finance, insurance or healthcare campaign. |
| Buyer-intent research finds high source fragmentation across engines | "AI source authority is engine-specific enough that one publisher list creates blind spots." | Pair the AI Mode source map with the cross-platform study before assuming a source strategy transfers. |
| Citation visibility does not establish recommendation causality | "Our content is measurably present in the visible AI Mode source layer." | Use citation visibility to prioritize research and outreach, then separately measure brand mentions, recommendation rate, ranking, sentiment and citation-recommendation coupling before claiming business impact. |
The daily operating model is therefore three-layered:
- Platform core: maintain the Google AI Mode sources that repeatedly matter across months.
- Category and vertical layer: identify which sources matter for the brand's exact high-stakes buyer journey.
- Cross-platform check: determine whether those same sources also matter in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot.
This research should influence where teams investigate, pitch, partner, publish and monitor. It does not establish that buying advertising, earning coverage or publishing on a cited domain will cause Google AI Mode to cite or recommend a brand.

How This Study Fits the High-Stakes Consumer Decisions Research Corpus
Article 10 is the Google AI Mode platform hub in the LLM Authority Index High-Stakes Consumer Decisions series.
The surrounding studies answer different operating questions:
- The 2026 AI Citation Authority Study establishes the full source ecosystem and four decision-family structure.
- The Persistence-Portability Gap separates temporal source persistence from cross-platform source portability.
- Do AI Platforms Cite the Same Websites? shows how the Google AI Mode Top 100 overlaps with the other five platform source lists.
- How Stable Are AI Citations? explains why a persistent platform-wide publisher portfolio can coexist with high same-prompt source turnover.
- Reddit's Decline in AI Citations provides the overall longitudinal Reddit context.
- Articles 16, 19, 22 and 25 break Google AI Mode source authority into the four decision families.
- Articles 44, 47, 50 and 53 measure how Reddit citation visibility changed specifically inside Google AI Mode for those same four families.
- Articles 09, 11, 12, 13 and 14 provide the comparable overall source maps for Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot.
Article 10 should therefore be used as the platform-wide starting point. The category child studies answer which Google AI Mode sources matter for a specific commercial decision family. The Reddit studies answer how one important source changed over time inside Google AI Mode. The sibling platform studies answer whether the same source strategy transfers to another AI engine.

Citation Concentration
| Ranking depth | Share of domain-response appearances | Share of citation events |
|---|---|---|
| Top 10 | 21.39% | 24.99% |
| Top 25 | 30.11% | 35.51% |
| Top 50 | 37.63% | 43.60% |
| Top 100 | 46.59% | 52.68% |
The head of the distribution is meaningful, but the long tail remains large. More than ten thousand registrable domains appeared somewhere in the AI Mode corpus.
The Leading Google AI Mode Sources Differ by High-Stakes Category
| High-stakes family | Responses | Five leading cited domains |
|---|---|---|
| Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending | 4,972 | nerdwallet.com 31.2%, cnbc.com 29.0%, bankrate.com 27.8%, reddit.com 17.1%, forbes.com 14.2% |
| Insurance | 3,960 | usnews.com 20.8%, nerdwallet.com 20.7%, forbes.com 19.6%, money.com 14.9%, reddit.com 14.3% |
| Investing, Retirement, Mortgage and Financial Decisions | 3,689 | nerdwallet.com 23.1%, investopedia.com 20.3%, reddit.com 20.2%, cnbc.com 19.6%, money.com 14.3% |
| Health and Medical | 4,156 | goodrx.com 11.0%, youtube.com 10.9%, amazon.com 7.9%, ncoa.org 7.3%, healthline.com 6.7% |
The category differences are commercially important. A publisher can be a major AI Mode source in one family without ranking near the top of another. This is why the platform-wide Top 100 should be used as a strategic map, not as a replacement for category-level analysis.
Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews Are Related, Not Identical
The two Google surfaces were the most similar platform pair in the broader LLMAI study, but they were not interchangeable.
- 82 domains appeared in both Top 100 lists.
- The resulting Top 100 Jaccard similarity was 69.5%.
- AI Mode's Top 5 in this panel was NerdWallet, CNBC, Reddit, Forbes and YouTube.
- Google AI Overviews' Top 5 was NerdWallet, Reddit, CNBC, YouTube and Bankrate.
- AI Mode generated 122,989 visible citation events across 16,777 responses, while the corresponding AI Overviews study recorded 78,783 public-facing citation events across 17,729 responses under its published exclusions.
The difference in citation depth does not prove that one surface performs more research or uses more sources internally. It describes the visible citations surfaced by the two products under this collection framework.

Month-to-Month Persistence in Google AI Mode
| Month comparison | Shared Top 100 domains | Jaccard similarity |
|---|---|---|
| July vs. August | 87 | 77.0% |
| July vs. September | 89 | 80.2% |
| August vs. September | 90 | 81.8% |
Across all three months, 83 domains remained in the Google AI Mode Top 100.
That is strong portfolio-level persistence. It does not mean the exact sources attached to an individual repeated question were equally stable. The companion citation-drift study separately measures same-prompt source turnover.
How This Study Relates to Other Google AI Mode Research
Ahrefs: broad U.S. queries
Ahrefs' September 2026 Google AI Mode leaderboard uses a broad set of U.S. queries spanning all topics and ranks domains by mention share among the leading sources. Reddit, YouTube, Google, Facebook and Instagram occupy its first five positions. Ahrefs Google AI Mode study
The LLMAI high-stakes panel produces a different first five because its prompt population is heavily concentrated in financial, insurance and health decisions. NerdWallet and CNBC therefore become much more prominent, while Facebook and Instagram are far less central.
Tinuiti: commercial product and prompt categories
Tinuiti's Q3 2026 AI Citation Trends work tracks six major AI platforms across commercial categories and reports a strong increase in Google-owned source visibility in AI Mode, including Google Business Profiles, product cards and other Google.com surfaces. Tinuiti Q3 AI Citation Trends
That research is useful context for interpreting the presence of Google-owned citations. The LLMAI ranking does not automatically remove a substantive source merely because Google owns the domain, although obvious technical or non-substantive infrastructure is treated separately.
Foglift: Frozen Buyer-Intent Prompts Still Produce Different Source Markets by Engine
Foglift's September 2026 research retained the same 75 brand-neutral buyer-intent prompts across 25 verticals for its Q3 benchmark. Across 375 responses from five engine lanes, Foglift reported 1,510 distinct cited domains. Among the 92 domains appearing in the combined engine Top 25 lists, 75% appeared in only one engine, and none appeared in all five. Foglift Research
Foglift's engine set and Google implementation are not identical to this study, so the percentages should not be treated as directly comparable with the LLM Authority Index Top 100 overlap values.
The relevant agreement is structural: buyer-intent source markets remain highly engine-specific even when the same commercial questions are held constant. That supports publishing Google AI Mode separately from Google AI Overviews instead of collapsing both surfaces into one "Google AI" source ranking.

How the LLM Authority Index Google AI Mode Study Is Different
This study is differentiated by the combination of:
- high-stakes commercial intent, rather than an all-topic query population;
- 53 source vertical labels across four consequential consumer decision families;
- three monthly collection periods rather than one snapshot;
- response-level domain presence as the primary ranking metric;
- raw citation-event counts reported separately from response presence;
- registrable-domain normalization;
- explicit extraction-failure accounting;
- cross-vertical exact-repeat handling; and
- direct comparability with the companion Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot studies built from the same research program.
Why Google AI Mode Citation Studies Can Disagree
Different studies can produce different rankings because they measure different populations and sometimes different versions of the product.
Important variables include:
- prompt intent and category mix;
- geography;
- collection date;
- whether the study captures AI Mode from a consumer search surface, another interface or an API-backed monitoring lane;
- whether citations are counted once per response or once per URL;
- whether Google-owned sources, product cards, maps and other surfaces are included;
- domain normalization;
- treatment of zero-citation responses and extraction failures; and
- whether rankings are based on all citations, only leading sources, or response-level presence.
A broad all-topic study and a high-stakes commercial-decision study should not be expected to produce the same leading publishers.
What the Results Mean for Publishers
For publishers, this study provides several defensible commercial measurements:
- response-level Google AI Mode citation coverage;
- vertical breadth;
- high-stakes family breadth;
- monthly persistence;
- citation-event volume; and
- overlap with other AI platforms.
A publisher can use those measurements in an advertiser or partner conversation without claiming that publishing on its site will cause Google AI Mode to recommend a brand.
A safer claim is:
Our domain is measurably present among the sources Google AI Mode cites when answering high-stakes consumer questions in this market.

What the Results Mean for CMOs and Brands
For CMOs, the Top 100 should be a starting map rather than a media-buy list.
A stronger workflow is to identify:
- publishers with strong overall AI Mode visibility;
- publishers that are strong in the brand's exact category;
- publishers that remain visible across several months;
- sources that also appear in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT; and
- independent third-party publishers versus company-owned, government, nonprofit, community and platform-owned sources.
The category studies provide the next layer:
- Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending
- Insurance
- Investing, Retirement, Mortgage and Financial Decisions
- Health and Medical
Methodology
Research source
This analysis uses the same frozen archive and cleaning framework as the 2026 AI Citation Authority Study.
Unit of observation
The unit is one AI Mode response observation associated with a prompt, month and raw source surface.
Explicit extraction failures
Observations explicitly marked as extraction failures are excluded rather than treated as ordinary zero-citation answers.
Exact-repeat handling
For corpus-level analysis, records with the same month, exact raw source surface, normalized prompt and exact citation URL set are counted once. This is an anti-double-counting rule for overlapping exports and does not assert that the upstream system executed the prompt only once.
Prompt normalization
Prompt matching uses Unicode NFKC normalization, case folding, whitespace collapse and trimming.
Domain normalization
Citation URLs are parsed to hostnames and consolidated to registrable domains using public-suffix logic. Raw URLs remain preserved in the research archive.
Response citation coverage
A domain counts no more than once within a response for the primary ranking.
response citation coverage = eligible AI Mode responses citing domain / all eligible AI Mode responses
Citation-event count
Citation events are reported separately. Multiple URLs from the same domain can create multiple citation events in one response.
Platform-owned sources
Substantive platform-owned pages are not automatically deleted solely because Google owns the domain. Obvious technical, image, navigation and tracking artifacts are handled separately under the public ranking rules.
No causal interpretation
Visible citation is an observed source relationship. It does not establish that the source caused a brand to be mentioned, recommended or ranked.

Limitations
- The study measures visible citations, not hidden retrieval or training data.
- The prompt universe is intentionally commercial and high stakes, not representative of all AI Mode use.
- Google can change AI Mode interfaces, source presentation and retrieval behavior quickly.
- The source archive is not a perfectly balanced panel of verticals across all three months because some July datasets were never produced.
- Domain-level analysis can hide page-level turnover.
- Citation does not equal endorsement, recommendation or causation.
- Google-owned substantive source surfaces are not equivalent to independent editorial publishers and should be interpreted separately.
- Absolute percentages from other providers should not be compared directly unless the prompt population, denominator and collection contract are equivalent.
Commercial Relationship Disclosure
LLM Authority Index is part of a business ecosystem that provides AI visibility, research and marketing services. Affiliated businesses may have current or historical commercial relationships with companies or publishers appearing in the dataset.
Commercial relationships are not inputs to the ranking methodology. No ranking position should be interpreted as an endorsement, and no commercial relationship should be interpreted as evidence that it caused citation visibility.
