LLM Authority Index Research | Gemini | High-Stakes Consumer Decisions | July-September 2026
LLM Authority Index analyzed 7,657 deduplicated Gemini responses across 53 high-stakes consumer source verticals from July through September 2026.
Money.com ranked #1 in this high-stakes Gemini panel, appearing as a cited domain in 9.3% of responses. Bankrate ranked #2 at 6.5%, Forbes #3 at 6.4%, Experian #4 at 2.7%, and LendingTree #5 at 2.6%.
That source hierarchy looks very different from broad, all-topic Gemini research. Ahrefs' September 2026 Gemini study, based on more than 3 million U.S. queries spanning all topics, ranks Reddit #1, YouTube #2, Wikipedia #3, and Walmart #4 by mention share. Ahrefs Gemini study
The difference is the research population. LLMAI is intentionally concentrated on high-stakes commercial decisions in credit, debt, banking, insurance, investing, mortgages, retirement, health and medical services. In that population, financial decision-support publishers, lenders, credit information sites, and specialist health publishers become much more visible.

Answer Capsule
Which websites are most frequently cited by Gemini for high-stakes consumer decisions? In the LLM Authority Index July-September 2026 panel, Money.com ranked #1, followed by Bankrate, Forbes, Experian, and LendingTree by response-level citation coverage. The study analyzes 7,657 deduplicated Gemini responses, 11,990 visible citation events, and 1,992 registrable cited domains after excluding obvious infrastructure artifacts. Gemini's Top 100 account for 54.1% of all domain-response appearances. Its Top 100 shares 60 domains with Google AI Mode, 59 with Google AI Overviews, 57 with Perplexity, and 42 with ChatGPT, showing that Gemini is related to the broader Google source ecosystem but still has a distinct high-stakes citation profile.
Key Findings
- The July-September archive contains 8,643 raw Gemini observations.
- 198 observations were explicitly marked as extraction failures and excluded from valid-response analysis.
- The raw Gemini files contain 13,480 citation-array entries before analytical exact-repeat handling.
- The primary Gemini dataset contains 7,657 deduplicated responses and 11,990 visible citation events after infrastructure exclusions.
- The public analytical dataset contains 1,992 registrable cited domains and 11,548 response-level domain appearances.
- Money.com ranked #1 at 9.3% response coverage, followed by Bankrate at 6.5%, Forbes at 6.4%, Experian at 2.7%, and LendingTree at 2.6%.
- The Top 25 domains accounted for 33.6% of domain-response appearances; the Top 100 accounted for 54.1%.
- 54 domains appeared in Gemini's Top 100 in July, August, and September.
- July and September shared 63 of 100 Gemini Top 100 domains, producing 46.0% Jaccard similarity.
- Gemini's Top 100 shared 60 domains with Google AI Mode, 59 with Google AI Overviews, 57 with Perplexity, 42 with ChatGPT, and 37 with Microsoft Copilot.
- Gemini's leading source varied sharply by high-stakes category. Bankrate led Credit, Money.com led Insurance and Investing/Retirement/Mortgage/Financial Decisions, and GoodRx led Health and Medical.
- Reddit ranked #10 overall in this high-stakes Gemini panel, far below its #1 position in Ahrefs' broad all-topic September Gemini ranking.
- 372 citations to myactivity.google.com were excluded as Google account-activity infrastructure rather than publisher content.

Questions This Study Answers
- Which publishers are most frequently cited by Gemini for high-stakes consumer decisions?
- Which third-party sites should CMOs evaluate when building a Gemini-focused earned-media strategy?
- Which publishers can demonstrate independent Gemini citation visibility to advertisers?
- Why can a high-stakes Gemini source ranking look very different from a broad all-topic Gemini ranking?
- Does Gemini cite the same publishers as Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews?
- Which sources lead Gemini in credit, insurance, investing, mortgage, retirement, health and medical decisions?
- How stable is Gemini's Top 100 from month to month?
- **Should a brand use the same publisher target list for Gemini as it uses## Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions
This study is research-based, but its purpose is commercial decision support.
Gemini is a distinct source environment. It overlaps meaningfully with Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews, but the overlap is nowhere near complete, and its source mix also differs from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot.
For publishers, that creates a measurable commercial asset: Gemini citation visibility can be documented by platform, category, vertical and time rather than reduced to organic rank or one blended AI visibility score.
For brands and CMOs, the operating question is different:
Which sources are already present around the consequential commercial questions our customers ask Gemini, and which of those sources deserve attention for first-party content, PR, partnerships, community strategy, competitive research and AI search optimization?
Three findings matter for daily planning:
- the Top 100 account for 54.1% of domain-response appearances;
- 54 domains remained in the Gemini Top 100 in July, August and September; and
- the median of the three monthly Top 100 Jaccard comparisons was 46.0%.
That is enough persistence to identify a recurring source core, but not enough to treat one Gemini source map as permanent.
At the same time, the final cross-platform study shows that Gemini shared 60 Top 100 domains with Google AI Mode, 59 with Google AI Overviews, 57 with Perplexity, 42 with ChatGPT and 37 with Microsoft Copilot.
This is why the Persistence-Portability Gap framework matters. Article 13 measures temporal source persistence inside Gemini. Article 03 shows how imperfectly that source set transfers to other engines.
A platform-specific Persistence-Portability Gap should not be created by subtracting one pairwise cross-platform overlap statistic from Gemini's monthly persistence. Those measurements use different comparison structures. The defensible commercial conclusion is:
Gemini has a recurring source core, but Gemini authority is not interchangeable with Google AI Search authority or broad cross-platform authority.
External buyer-intent research adds another useful commercial dimension. Foglift's Q2 citation-type study found that 45.7% of its classified Gemini citations were vendor first-party sources, 19.7% were niche publisher hubs, and Gemini was the only engine in that five-engine sample to cite community discussion at a meaningful rate. Those percentages come from a much smaller and different buyer-intent panel, but they reinforce the practical idea that Gemini strategy may require both first-party depth and third-party source-layer work.
Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings
| Research finding | What publishers can responsibly say | What brands and CMOs can reasonably do |
|---|---|---|
| Money.com, Bankrate, Forbes, Experian and LendingTree lead this high-stakes Gemini source map | "Our domain is measurably visible in Gemini for this defined commercial decision population." | Use the platform-wide leaders as a strategic research tier, then evaluate category, vertical and current prompt fit before outreach or investment. |
| The Top 100 account for 54.1% of domain-response appearances | "Gemini has a meaningful recurring source layer without being dominated by only a few domains." | Maintain both a core source list and a wider specialist list. |
| 54 domains remained in the Top 100 across all three months | "Multi-month Top 100 presence is stronger evidence of persistent Gemini visibility than a one-time citation screenshot." | Use recurring sources as the durable planning layer while still monitoring movement around priority prompts. |
| Median monthly Top 100 persistence is 46.0% | "Gemini source leadership is persistent enough to measure, but materially dynamic." | Recheck important Gemini prompt clusters on a recurring cadence instead of treating one benchmark as permanent. |
| Gemini shares 60 Top 100 domains with Google AI Mode and 59 with Google AI Overviews | "Gemini overlaps substantially with Google's other AI surfaces, but the source sets are not identical." | Coordinate Google-focused source strategy while preserving a Gemini-specific source map. |
| Gemini shares only 42 Top 100 domains with ChatGPT and 37 with Microsoft Copilot | "Strong Gemini citation visibility does not establish equivalent authority on other AI engines." | Maintain platform-specific publisher and source priorities rather than extending Gemini assumptions across the market. |
| Source leaders differ sharply by high-stakes decision family | "Our strongest Gemini authority may be category-specific rather than universal." | Use the Credit, Insurance, Financial and Health child studies before deciding which sources matter for a particular product. |
| Ahrefs ranks Reddit #1 with 28.5% mention share in a broad all-topic September Gemini population | "Citation leadership depends on the query population and denominator." | Do not import an all-topic Gemini publisher list directly into a finance, insurance or healthcare campaign. |
| Foglift found Gemini's classified citations spread across first-party, niche publisher, community and other source types | "Gemini can surface several source roles rather than one universal publisher type." | Invest in strong first-party content while also identifying the independent publishers and communities Gemini uses for the target vertical. |
| Wellows found low same-question source overlap between Gemini and other engines | "Gemini source authority should be measured independently." | Treat cross-engine portability as a measurement problem, not an assumption. |
| Citation selection does not prove citation absorption or recommendation causality | "Our content is measurably present in the visible Gemini source layer." | Use citation visibility to prioritize research and outreach, then separately measure brand mentions, recommendation rate, ranking, sentiment and citation-recommendation coupling before claiming business impact. |
The daily operating model is therefore four-layered:
- Current Gemini core: maintain the sources that repeatedly matter, with the collection date attached.
- Category and vertical layer: identify which sources matter for the brand's exact high-stakes buyer journey.
- Source-role layer: separate first-party, publisher, institutional, community, marketplace and other source roles rather than treating every citation as the same opportunity.
- Cross-platform check: determine whether the same sources also matter in Google AI Search, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot.
This research should influence where teams investigate, pitch, partner, publish and monitor. It does not establish that buying advertising, earning coverage or publishing on a cited domain will cause Gemini to cite or recommend a brand.

Citation Concentration
Gemini's measured high-stakes citation distribution has a relatively long tail compared with several other platform families in this study.
| Ranking depth | Share of all domain-response appearances | Share of citation events |
|---|---|---|
| Top 10 | 23.9% | 24.2% |
| Top 25 | 33.6% | 33.9% |
| Top 50 | 42.6% | 42.8% |
| Top 100 | 54.1% | 54.4% |
The Top 100 account for just over half of all response-level domain appearances. That means a Gemini publisher strategy cannot be reduced to only a handful of dominant domains, especially when a brand is targeting narrower commercial prompt clusters.
The Leading Gemini Sources Differ by High-Stakes Category
| High-stakes family | Gemini responses | Leading cited domains by response coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending | 2,421 | bankrate.com (17.1%), money.com (10.8%), experian.com (6.8%), forbes.com (5.7%), wallethub.com (5.7%) |
| Insurance | 1,697 | money.com (13.3%), forbes.com (9.7%), moneygeek.com (6.0%), squaremouth.com (3.1%), pawlicy.com (2.9%) |
| Investing, Retirement, Mortgage and Financial Decisions | 1,720 | money.com (13.0%), forbes.com (5.0%), bankrate.com (4.8%), kraken.com (2.6%), schwab.com (2.2%) |
| Health and Medical | 1,819 | goodrx.com (6.3%), healthline.com (5.7%), forbes.com (5.6%), ncoa.org (5.4%), seniorliving.org (5.2%) |
The category differences are material.
In Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending, Bankrate leads Gemini response coverage. In Insurance and Investing/Retirement/Mortgage/Financial Decisions, Money.com leads. In Health and Medical, GoodRx leads, followed closely by Healthline, Forbes, NCOA, and SeniorLiving.org.
This is one reason a single blended Gemini ranking is useful for benchmarking but insufficient for tactical outreach. A publisher can be modest overall and still be highly relevant inside one high-value vertical.
Gemini Shares Sources With Google AI Search, but the Lists Are Not the Same
| Comparison platform | Shared Top 100 domains with Gemini | Top 100 Jaccard similarity |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Mode | 60 | 42.9% |
| Google AI Overviews | 59 | 41.8% |
| Perplexity | 57 | 39.9% |
| ChatGPT | 42 | 26.6% |
Gemini's strongest Top 100 overlap is with Google AI Mode, followed closely by Google AI Overviews. That relationship is directionally intuitive, but the overlap is far from complete.
A brand optimizing for high-stakes Gemini visibility should not assume that the best publisher targets are identical to Google AI Mode or AI Overviews. Likewise, Microsoft Copilot has the lowest Top 100 overlap with Gemini in the final six-platform comparison, followed by ChatGPT.

Month-to-Month Persistence in Gemini
Gemini's aggregate Top 100 was moderately persistent across the three-month window.
| Month comparison | Shared Top 100 domains | Jaccard similarity |
|---|---|---|
| 07 vs. 08 | 61 | 43.9% |
| 07 vs. 09 | 63 | 46.0% |
| 08 vs. 09 | 76 | 61.3% |
Fifty-four domains appeared in Gemini's Top 100 in all three months. August and September were the most similar pair, sharing 76 of 100 domains.
The highest-ranking domains were more stable than the full list. Money.com ranked #1 in July, August, and September. Bankrate stayed in the Top 3 every month, while Forbes ranked #2 or #3 each month.
This does not mean individual prompts preserved the same sources. The separate citation drift study shows that stable aggregate publisher rankings can coexist with substantial same-prompt source turnover.

How This Study Relates to Other Gemini Citation Research
Ahrefs: broad all-topic Gemini queries
Ahrefs' September 2026 Gemini study tracks more than 3 million U.S. queries across all topics and ranks domains by mention share among the top cited sources. Its leading domains are Reddit, YouTube, Wikipedia, and Walmart. Ahrefs Gemini study
LLMAI produces a very different Top 5 because its query basket is intentionally commercial and high stakes. Money.com, Bankrate, Forbes, Experian, and LendingTree are much more central to credit, insurance, mortgage, and financial decision prompts than they are to a general all-topic query universe.
These are not competing estimates of one universal Gemini ranking. They answer different questions.
Tinuiti and Profound: category mix changes source behavior
Tinuiti's Q3 2026 AI Citation Trends Report tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot across commercial categories such as apparel, beauty, electronics, food and beverage, home and garden, manufacturing, OTC health, technology, and transportation. Its published findings emphasize that source-type behavior differs by platform and category. Tinuiti Q3 2026 AI Citation Trends Report
That supports the need to define the commercial query population before interpreting a domain ranking.
Machine Relations: engine differences persist in another independent panel
Machine Relations' September 2026 public index tracks six engines over a multi-month window and reports substantial engine-specific source presence differences. Its September 23 release covers 16,475 observed answer runs and 23,280 cited domains across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity. Machine Relations September 23 report
The Machine Relations work uses a different query universe and measurement contract from LLMAI, but it reinforces the broader conclusion that source visibility should be measured separately by engine rather than assumed to transfer automatically.
Wellows: Same-Question Overlap Places Gemini Between the Google Surfaces and Other Engines
Wellows analyzed 22.7 million citations across roughly 1.15 million questions from January through June 2026 across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. In its matched-question pairwise analysis, Gemini shared 12.0% source overlap with Google AI Overviews, 10.9% with Google AI Mode, 7.4% with Perplexity and 6.1% with ChatGPT. Wellows cross-engine citation study
Those percentages are much lower than the aggregate Top 100 Jaccards in this article because the unit is different. Wellows asks whether engines answering the same question cite the same sources. Article 13 asks how much the recurring platform-level Top 100 source portfolios overlap.
The directional result is still useful: Gemini is more source-adjacent to Google's AI search surfaces than to ChatGPT in both measurement systems, but substantial source fragmentation remains.
Foglift: Gemini Uses a Broad Mix of Source Types in Buyer-Intent Prompts
Foglift's Q2 2026 citation-type study classified 1,430 citations from 375 buyer-intent responses across five engines. In its classified Gemini subset, 45.7% of citations were vendor first-party sources, 19.7% were niche publisher hubs, and 2.4% were community discussion. Gemini was the only engine in that sample to touch all fourteen source categories in Foglift's taxonomy. Foglift citation content-type study
Foglift's study is much smaller and uses a different prompt mix and URL-level source-type taxonomy, so those percentages should not be treated as estimates of this high-stakes corpus.
The relevance is commercial: Gemini source strategy may need both owned-content depth and external source-layer work. A team that looks only at publisher outreach or only at first-party content risks missing part of the platform's visible source market.
Machine Relations: Source Selection Is Not the Same as Source Absorption
Machine Relations also separates source selection from source absorption: a page can be retrieved and shown as a citation without necessarily contributing language, evidence or structure to the generated answer. Its July 2026 synthesis draws on a broader multi-engine evidence base to argue that these stages should be measured separately. Machine Relations citation selection and absorption research
That distinction is consistent with this article's methodology. LLMAI measures Gemini's visible citation source layer. It does not claim that every cited page powered the answer, caused a brand mention or caused a recommendation.

How the LLM Authority Index Gemini Study Is Different
This article is not differentiated simply because it publishes a Gemini source list. Other organizations already do that.
Its contribution is the combination of:
- a high-stakes consumer decision query population;
- 53 source vertical labels across four commercial research families;
- three monthly collection windows;
- response-level domain coverage and raw citation-event metrics reported separately;
- registrable-domain normalization using the Public Suffix List;
- explicit extraction-failure accounting;
- exact-repeat handling across overlapping vertical exports;
- public exclusion of obvious technical infrastructure such as Google account-activity pages; and
- direct integration with parallel ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overviews studies using the same core analytical contract.
Why Gemini Citation Studies Can Disagree
Gemini citation rankings can change dramatically depending on:
- whether the query population is all-topic or commercial;
- whether prompts are informational, buyer-intent, comparative, brand-specific, or product-specific;
- whether data comes from the consumer Gemini interface, an API, or another Google surface;
- country and language;
- model and retrieval version;
- date of collection;
- URL-level versus registrable-domain normalization;
- whether multiple URLs from one domain count once or many times;
- whether technical Google surfaces are included;
- how zero-citation responses are treated; and
- whether the denominator is responses, citations, pages, or a top-source mention-share subset.
A citation percentage should therefore always be read together with its denominator and collection contract.
What the Results Mean for Publishers
Publishers can use this dataset to make narrower, more defensible statements about Gemini visibility.
A publisher should prefer claims such as:
"Our domain appeared in X% of measured Gemini responses in this defined high-stakes consumer panel."
rather than:
"Gemini trusts our site."
The first statement is measurable. The second converts an observed citation pattern into an unsupported claim about the model's internal judgment.
Publishers that are broad across multiple verticals can also distinguish category breadth from raw rank. Money.com appears across 36 Gemini vertical labels and all four high-stakes families in this analysis, while some narrower specialist domains can be materially stronger inside one specific commercial vertical.

What the Results Mean for CMOs and Brands
For brands, the main implication is that Gemini requires its own source map.
A practical workflow is:
- establish the brand's most commercially important Gemini prompt clusters;
- identify the domains repeatedly cited for those prompts;
- separate broad category authorities from vertical specialists;
- compare those sources with Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Copilot;
- prioritize publishers that are relevant to the actual prompt cluster, not merely high-ranking across all topics; and
- remeasure periodically because aggregate rank persistence does not eliminate same-prompt citation drift.
The objective is not to "get a backlink for Gemini." It is to understand which independent information sources repeatedly appear in the source environment surrounding high-value buyer questions.
Methodology
Research source
This study uses the frozen July-September 2026 archive underlying the 2026 AI Citation Authority Study.
Unit of observation
The primary unit is one Gemini response to one recorded prompt on one recorded source surface.
Explicit extraction failures
The raw Gemini archive contains 198 observations explicitly marked as extraction failures. These records are excluded from valid-response analysis rather than counted as ordinary zero-citation responses.
Exact-repeat handling
An observation is treated as an analytical repeat when all of the following match:
- report month;
- exact raw platform surface;
- normalized prompt text; and
- exact set of original citation URLs.
One record is retained for the primary analysis. This is an anti-double-counting rule for overlapping exports. It is not a claim that the upstream platform necessarily ran the prompt only once.
Prompt normalization
Prompt matching uses Unicode NFKC normalization, case folding, whitespace collapse, and trimming. Prompt wording is otherwise preserved.
Domain normalization
Citation URLs are parsed to hostnames, lowercased, stripped of leading www., and consolidated to the registrable domain using the Public Suffix List.
For example, en.wikipedia.org is reported as wikipedia.org.
Infrastructure exclusions
Obvious non-publisher infrastructure is excluded from the public ranking. In the Gemini corpus, this includes 372 citation records pointing to myactivity.google.com, an account-activity surface rather than an editorial source.
The study does not automatically delete every Google-owned substantive surface solely because Google owns it.
Response citation coverage
The primary ranking metric is:
responses citing domain / all eligible deduplicated Gemini responses
A domain counts no more than once within a response.
Citation events
Raw visible citation occurrences are retained as a secondary metric. A single response can contain more than one citation event from the same domain.
No causal interpretation
A citation establishes observed source visibility. It does not establish that the citation caused a company mention, recommendation, ranking, conversion, or consumer decision.

Limitations
- The study measures a high-stakes commercial panel, not all Gemini usage. Results should not be generalized to casual, coding, entertainment, news, or all-topic prompts.
- Citation capture is surface-dependent. Different Gemini interfaces or API configurations can expose sources differently.
- The three-month period is short. Longer windows are needed to establish durable multi-quarter stability.
- The 53 source vertical labels are not statistically independent. Related exports can share prompts.
- Visible citations are not hidden retrieval or training data. The study only measures surfaced source relationships.
- Domain-level ranking can hide page-level turnover. The same domain can remain visible while the cited URL changes.
- No ranking should be interpreted as source quality, factual accuracy, or endorsement. Frequency and quality are different questions.
- External studies use different denominators. Ahrefs mention share, Machine Relations run-level presence, Tinuiti source-type share, and LLMAI response coverage should not be compared as if they are one metric.
Commercial Relationship Disclosure
LLM Authority Index is part of a business ecosystem that provides AI visibility, research, and marketing services. Affiliated businesses may have current or historical commercial relationships with companies or publishers that appear in the dataset.
Commercial relationships are not inputs to the citation rankings. Domains are included based on observed citation data. No ranking is an endorsement, and no relationship should be interpreted as evidence that it caused citation visibility.
