LLM Authority Index Research | Google AI Overviews | High-Stakes Consumer Decisions | July-September 2026
LLM Authority Index analyzed 17,729 deduplicated Google AI Overviews responses across 53 high-stakes consumer source verticals from July through September 2026.
The visible source ecosystem for high-stakes consumer decisions looks very different from broad, all-topic Google AI Overviews studies.
NerdWallet ranked #1 in this high-stakes panel, appearing as a cited domain in 15.4% of Google AI Overviews responses. Reddit ranked #2 at 11.7%, CNBC #3 at 11.4%, YouTube #4 at 9.9%, and Bankrate #5 at 8.3%.
That ranking is not a contradiction of broader studies that place YouTube, Reddit, Facebook and other platforms at the top of Google AI Overviews. It reflects a different measured population: this study is deliberately concentrated on commercial, high-stakes decisions involving money, insurance, investing, mortgages, health and medical services.
For publishers and CMOs, that distinction is the point. The source ecosystem around a credit card, mortgage, insurance policy, online pharmacy or medical alert decision can look very different from the source ecosystem around the average Google query.
This platform study is part of the 2026 AI Citation Authority Study.
Answer Capsule
Which websites are most frequently cited by Google AI Overviews for high-stakes consumer decisions? In the LLM Authority Index July-September 2026 panel, NerdWallet ranked #1, followed by Reddit, CNBC, YouTube and Bankrate by response-level citation coverage. The study analyzes 17,729 deduplicated Google AI Overviews responses, 78,783 visible citation events after public infrastructure exclusions, and 6,743 registrable cited domains. The Top 100 account for 51.9% of all domain-response appearances. The source mix differs substantially by commercial category, so a single all-topic Google AI Overviews ranking should not be treated as the definitive publisher map for high-stakes buying decisions.
Key Findings
- The raw archive contains 19,294 July-September Google AI Overviews observations across the keyword and non-keyword collection lanes.
- 253 observations were explicitly marked as extraction failures and excluded from valid-response analysis.
- After the same exact-repeat handling used in the flagship study, the Google AI Overviews analysis contains 17,729 deduplicated responses.
- Those responses contain 78,783 public-facing citation events after the published infrastructure exclusions.
- The dataset contains 6,743 registrable cited domains and 66,213 response-level domain appearances.
- NerdWallet ranked #1, followed by Reddit, CNBC, YouTube and Bankrate.
- The Top 25 domains accounted for 33.1% of domain-response appearances; the Top 100 accounted for 51.9%.
- 84 domains appeared in the Google AI Overviews Top 100 in July, August and September.
- July and September shared 88 of 100 leading domains, producing 78.6% Jaccard similarity.
- Source leadership differed by high-stakes family. Broad financial publishers dominated credit and lending, while YouTube and specialist health sources were much stronger in health and medical decisions.
- The results should not be compared directly with all-topic AIO percentages from Ahrefs or other providers because the prompt populations, denominators, time windows and metrics differ.

Questions This Study Answers
- Which publishers are most frequently cited by Google AI Overviews when consumers make high-stakes buying decisions?
- Which third-party websites should CMOs investigate for Google AI Overviews visibility in finance, insurance and health?
- Which publishers can demonstrate independent Google AI Overviews citation visibility to advertisers?
- Does the all-topic Google AI Overviews publisher leaderboard look the same when the analysis is limited to commercial high-stakes decisions?
- Which sources are visible across the broadest range of high-value consumer verticals?
- Which publishers remain in the Google AI Overviews Top 100 month after month?
- How different are Google AI Overviews source leaders in credit, insurance, investing and health?
- Should a brand use the same publisher outreach list for Google AI Overviews as it uses for ChatGPT or Google AI Mode?
Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions
This study is research-based, but its purpose is commercial decision support.
Google AI Overviews sits inside the search journey, which makes source selection commercially important even when an AI Overview does not generate a click. A publisher that repeatedly appears as a visible source can document that presence. A brand or CMO can use the same data to identify which third-party sources, first-party sites, communities, nonprofits, institutions and specialist publishers are already present around commercially valuable questions.
The key operating mistake would be to treat one broad Google AI Overviews leaderboard as a universal outreach list.
In this high-stakes panel:
- the Top 100 accounted for 51.9% of domain-response appearances;
- the Top 25 accounted for 33.1%;
- 84 domains remained in the Google AI Overviews Top 100 in July, August and September; and
- the median of the three monthly Top 100 Jaccard comparisons was 83.5%.
That is a strong persistence signal at the platform-wide publisher-portfolio level.
At the same time, Article 03 shows that Google AI Overviews does not transfer equally to other AI platforms. In the final cross-platform Top 100 comparison, Google AI Overviews shared 82 domains with Google AI Mode, 63 with Perplexity, 62 with Gemini, 54 with ChatGPT and 35 with Microsoft Copilot.
This is exactly why the Persistence-Portability Gap framework matters. Article 09 measures a highly persistent source portfolio inside one platform. Article 03 shows that portability from that source portfolio to other platforms varies substantially.
A platform-specific Persistence-Portability Gap should not be calculated by simply subtracting Article 03 pairwise overlap from Article 09's monthly persistence because those comparisons answer different questions and use different pooling structures. The commercially useful conclusion is narrower and stronger:
Google AI Overviews has a durable source core, but a durable Google source is not automatically a universal AI source.
Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings
| Research finding | What publishers can responsibly say | What brands and CMOs can reasonably do |
|---|---|---|
| NerdWallet, Reddit, CNBC, YouTube and Bankrate lead the measured high-stakes Google AI Overviews source map | "Our domain is measurably visible in Google AI Overviews for this defined commercial decision population." | Use the platform-wide leaders as a strategic research tier, then evaluate category and vertical fit before outreach or investment. |
| The Top 100 account for 51.9% of domain-response appearances | "Google AI Overviews has a meaningful recurring source layer without being dominated by only a few domains." | Maintain both a core source list and a wider specialist list rather than focusing only on the top handful of publishers. |
| 84 domains remained in the Top 100 in all three months | "Multi-month Top 100 presence is stronger evidence of persistent visibility than a one-time citation screenshot." | Use recurring sources as the durable planning layer for PR, partnerships, content distribution and competitive research. |
| Median monthly Top 100 persistence is 83.5% | "The leading Google AI Overviews source portfolio was highly persistent during the study window." | Avoid rebuilding the entire Google AI Overviews source strategy every month. Monitor movement around a stable core. |
| Source leadership changes materially by high-stakes family | "Our strongest Google AI Overviews authority may be category-specific rather than universal." | Use the Credit, Insurance, Financial and Health child studies before deciding which publishers matter for a particular product. |
| Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode share 82 of their Top 100 domains | "The two Google AI surfaces have substantial source overlap, but they are not identical." | Coordinate Google-focused source strategy while continuing to measure AI Overviews and AI Mode separately. |
| Google AI Overviews shares only 35 Top 100 domains with Microsoft Copilot | "Strong Google AI Overviews visibility does not establish equivalent visibility on every AI engine." | Maintain platform-specific source maps rather than extending Google outreach assumptions to Copilot, ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity. |
| Ahrefs' broad all-topic AIO leaderboard is dominated by YouTube, Reddit and other large platforms | "Citation leadership depends on the query population and measurement contract." | Do not import an all-topic publisher list directly into a finance, insurance or healthcare campaign. Match source research to the buyer-intent population. |
| Ahrefs found that about 38% of AIO-cited pages also appeared in Google's top 10 for the same query | "Traditional organic visibility and AI Overview citation visibility overlap, but they are not the same outcome." | Track AIO citations separately from organic rank. A page-one SEO position should not be treated as proof of AI Overview citation visibility. |
| Category specialists can outperform broad publishers inside narrow buyer journeys | "Our commercial value may be strongest inside a particular vertical even if our overall platform rank is lower." | Add specialist publishers, providers, marketplaces and institutions to the exact vertical source map. |
| Citation visibility does not establish recommendation causality | "Our content is measurably present in the visible source layer." | Use citation visibility to prioritize research and outreach, then separately measure brand mentions, recommendation rate, ranking, sentiment and citation-recommendation coupling before claiming business impact. |
The daily operating model is therefore three-layered:
- Platform core: maintain the Google AI Overviews sources that repeatedly matter across months.
- Category and vertical layer: identify which sources matter for the brand's exact high-stakes buyer journey.
- Cross-platform check: determine whether those same sources are also important in Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot.
This research should influence where teams investigate, pitch, partner, publish and monitor. It does not establish that buying advertising, earning coverage or publishing on a cited domain will cause Google to cite or recommend a brand.

- The Persistence-Portability Gap provides the measurement language for separating temporal source persistence from cross-platform source portability.
- Do AI Platforms Cite the Same Websites? shows how the Google AI Overviews Top 100 overlaps with the other five platform source lists.
- How Stable Are AI Citations? explains why a persistent platform-wide publisher portfolio can coexist with high same-prompt source turnover.
- Reddit's Decline in AI Citations provides the overall longitudinal Reddit context.

Citation Concentration
| Ranking depth | Share of domain-response appearances | Share of citation events |
|---|---|---|
| Top 10 | 24.46% | 25.94% |
| Top 25 | 33.09% | 35.11% |
| Top 50 | 41.74% | 45.57% |
| Top 100 | 51.87% | 55.61% |
The Top 100 therefore capture a meaningful portion of visible source activity, but the remaining long tail still includes thousands of domains.
The Leading Google AI Overviews Sources Differ by High-Stakes Category
| High-stakes family | Google AI Overviews responses | Five leading cited domains |
|---|---|---|
| Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending | 5,208 | nerdwallet.com 24.4%; bankrate.com 22.5%; cnbc.com 21.7%; reddit.com 13.2%; experian.com 9.8% |
| Insurance | 4,262 | nerdwallet.com 17.4%; usnews.com 15.6%; forbes.com 12.0%; reddit.com 11.2%; money.com 9.9% |
| Investing, Retirement, Mortgage and Financial Decisions | 4,099 | nerdwallet.com 17.6%; youtube.com 17.3%; reddit.com 16.3%; investopedia.com 15.4%; cnbc.com 14.4% |
| Health and Medical | 4,160 | youtube.com 11.3%; goodrx.com 10.1%; ncoa.org 6.7%; amazon.com 6.5%; reddit.com 5.8% |
This is one reason the platform-wide Top 100 should be treated as a strategic map rather than a substitute for category research.

Month-to-Month Persistence in Google AI Overviews
| Month comparison | Shared Top 100 domains | Jaccard similarity |
|---|---|---|
| July vs. August | 91 | 83.49% |
| July vs. September | 88 | 78.57% |
| August vs. September | 91 | 83.49% |
Across all three months, 84 domains remained in the Google AI Overviews Top 100.
That persistence makes a multi-month publisher signal more defensible than a single screenshot, while the separate citation drift study shows why individual repeated prompts can still change source sets substantially.
How This Study Relates to Other Google AI Overviews Research
Ahrefs: more than 3 million broad U.S. queries
Ahrefs' September 2026 Google AI Overviews study analyzed citations across more than 3 million U.S. queries spanning all topics. Its ranking placed YouTube first, followed by Reddit, Facebook, Google, Instagram and Quora. Ahrefs Google AI Overviews study
That is useful prior art, but it is measuring a much broader population than this LLMAI study. Social platforms can dominate an all-topic query universe while financial and commercial publishers become much more prominent when the population is restricted to high-stakes consumer decisions.
Conductor: publishing benchmarks and organic-overlap analysis
Conductor's 2026 Publishing AI Search benchmarks analyzed large-scale AI and Google AI Overviews datasets and reported that no single publisher owned the citation field. In its Consumer Lifestyle AIO segment, NerdWallet, Healthline, Bankrate, Investopedia and GoodRx were the leading domains. Conductor Publishing AI Search Benchmarks
That result is directionally closer to the LLMAI high-stakes panel because Conductor's Consumer Lifestyle segment includes money and health publishers, but the classification system, query population, denominator and dates remain different.
Ahrefs: relationship between organic rankings and AIO citations
Ahrefs separately studied how often AI Overview citations come from traditional organic top results and reported that 38% of AIO citations pulled from the organic top 10 in its March 2026 update. Ahrefs organic ranking and AIO citation study
That addresses a different question from this article. It is about the relationship between organic ranking and citation selection, while the present study asks which domains appear most often within a high-stakes commercial prompt universe.
Tinuiti and Profound: Source Mix Changes by Platform and Category
Tinuiti's Q3 2026 AI Citation Trends Report tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot across commercial prompt categories. Its source-type analysis reports that most tracked platforms were at or near Q3 highs in social citation share, with Perplexity as a notable exception, while Google-owned surfaces increased their citation share particularly in AI Mode. Tinuiti Q3 2026 AI Citation Trends Report
Tinuiti does not use the same category mix or ranking denominator as this study, so the percentages should not be compared directly. Its relevance is structural: source mix changes by platform, category and time, which supports maintaining a Google AI Overviews-specific source map rather than assuming one blended AI citation market.

How the LLM Authority Index Google AI Overviews Study Is Different
This study does not claim to be the largest Google AI Overviews citation dataset. Its differentiator is the measured population and the way the results are structured.
- High-stakes consumer decisions. The panel is restricted to consequential commercial questions involving finance, insurance, investing, mortgages, health and medical products or services.
- Fifty-three source vertical labels. The research spans a wide range of buyer journeys rather than a general all-topic sample.
- Three-month panel. July, August and September are retained separately so persistence can be measured.
- Response-level presence as the primary ranking. A domain counts once per response for the primary coverage metric even when multiple URLs from that domain are cited.
- Explicit infrastructure filtering. Obvious technical assets are excluded from public source tables under a documented rule.
- Direct category cuts. The platform-wide study can be decomposed into credit/debt/banking/lending, insurance, investing/retirement/mortgage/financial and health/medical decisions.
- Cross-platform companion studies. The Google AI Overviews results can be compared under the same broader framework with Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.
Why Google AI Overviews Citation Studies Can Disagree
Two studies can both be accurate and still produce very different source rankings.
Differences can come from:
- all-topic versus commercial-query populations;
- real-user search-backed queries versus synthetic or curated prompts;
- country and language;
- collection dates;
- the exact Google AI Overview surface and parser;
- whether repeated citations from one domain count once or many times;
- URL, hostname or registrable-domain normalization;
- treatment of YouTube, Google-owned surfaces and social platforms;
- failed or zero-citation response handling; and
- whether the metric is citation share, mention share, response presence or unique pages cited.
For that reason, the percentages in this article should be compared with external research at the level of methodology and pattern rather than treated as directly interchangeable numbers.

What the Results Mean for Publishers
A publisher can use Google AI Overviews citation data to document measurable visibility in a specific commercial source ecosystem.
Useful evidence includes:
- response citation coverage;
- vertical breadth;
- high-stakes family breadth;
- month-to-month persistence;
- category-specific strength; and
- comparison with the publisher's visibility on other AI platforms.
The defensible claim is that the publisher was visibly cited in measured Google AI Overviews responses. The study does not establish that publishing with a site will cause Google to cite or recommend a brand.
What the Results Mean for CMOs and Brands
For CMOs, the Top 100 is a starting point for publisher and source research, not a ready-made buying list.
A practical workflow is to identify:
- the broad Google AI Overviews leaders in the brand's high-stakes family;
- the specialist sources inside the exact vertical;
- which of those sources are independent publishers versus first-party brands, nonprofits, government sources or community platforms;
- which sources also appear in ChatGPT and Google AI Mode; and
- whether the source relationship persists over time.
That is more informative than assuming the all-topic AIO leaderboard applies equally to every high-value commercial decision.
Methodology
Research source
The study uses the frozen LLM Authority Index July-September 2026 archive described in the flagship methodology.
Platform scope
The public Google AI Overviews family combines the raw google_ai_overviews and google_ai_overviews_keywords collection lanes for editorial reporting. Raw surfaces remain preserved separately in the archive.
Explicit extraction failures
Observations explicitly marked as extraction failures are excluded from valid-response analysis rather than treated as ordinary zero-citation results.
Exact-repeat handling
One analytical instance is retained when month, exact raw source surface, normalized prompt and exact original citation URL set all match.
Domain normalization
Citation URLs are normalized to registrable domains using Public Suffix List logic. Original URLs remain preserved.
Infrastructure exclusions
Obvious technical or navigational artifacts, including selected Bing image/map/ad assets, OpenAI image hosts and Google account-activity pages, are excluded from public ranking tables. A platform-owned domain is not automatically excluded if the cited surface is substantive.
Primary ranking metric
response citation coverage = eligible Google AI Overviews responses citing domain / all eligible Google AI Overviews responses
A domain counts at most once per response for this metric.
Missing months
Some verticals were not produced in July. Missing months are treated as unavailable, not zero-filled. The monthly Top 100 therefore describes each month's available panel rather than a perfectly balanced set of all 53 vertical labels.

Limitations
- The study does not represent all Google AI Overviews queries. It is intentionally focused on high-stakes consumer decisions.
- The 53 source labels are not 53 statistically independent industries. Some prompts overlap across closely related verticals.
- Google's AI surfaces can change quickly. Rankings describe July through September 2026.
- Some verticals lack July files. No missing month is imputed.
- Visible citations are not hidden retrieval data.
- Citation does not prove endorsement, influence or recommendation causation.
- The broad ranking mixes independent publishers, first-party companies, nonprofits, government sources, social/community platforms and platform-owned surfaces. Source-type studies should separate those classes.
Commercial Relationship Disclosure
LLM Authority Index is part of a business ecosystem that provides AI visibility, research and marketing services. Affiliated businesses may have current or historical commercial relationships with companies or publishers appearing in the dataset.
Commercial relationships are not inputs to the ranking methodology. No ranking position should be interpreted as an endorsement, and no commercial relationship should be interpreted as evidence that it caused citation visibility.
