LLM Authority Index Research | High-Stakes Consumer Decisions | Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending | Gemini | July-September 2026
Reddit's direct citation visibility in Gemini was low throughout this high-stakes financial decision panel, and the evidence does not support describing the platform-specific pattern as the same kind of collapse observed in ChatGPT or Perplexity.
On the balanced set of 13 financial verticals measured in both July and September 2026, Reddit's share of visible Gemini citation events fell from 1.41% to 0.88%, a 37.6% relative decline. The percentage of Gemini responses containing at least one Reddit citation fell from 2.03% to 1.26%, a 37.9% relative decline.
The stricter matched-prompt test points in a different direction. Across 154 exact prompt-plus-Gemini scenarios observed in both endpoint months, Reddit appeared in only 1 July scenario and 2 September scenarios. The matched table contained 1 Reddit loss, 2 Reddit gains, 0 persistent Reddit citations and 151 scenarios citing Reddit in neither month.
That means matched Reddit response coverage moved from 0.65% to 1.30%, a nominal doubling from one matched scenario to two. The exact two-sided McNemar result is p = 1.0, providing no evidence of a directional loss-gain imbalance in the matched Gemini sample.
The main finding is therefore not that Reddit clearly collapsed in Gemini. It is that Reddit operated from a very low and unstable baseline in this financial Gemini panel, with aggregate endpoints moving downward while the small matched subset did not confirm the same direction.
The broader three-month source ranking reinforces that point. Across 2,423 eligible Gemini financial responses, Reddit was cited in only 30 responses, or 1.24%, and generated 31 of 3,772 public-facing citation events, approximately 0.82% of the citation pool. Reddit ranked #25 in the full three-month Gemini financial source market, compared with #1 Bankrate at 17.09% response coverage and #2 Money.com at 10.85%.
Reddit's monthly source rank moved from #13 in July to #48 in August and #24 in September. That is meaningful volatility, but it is not a monotonic decline.
Important: This study measures visible citations in a defined high-stakes commercial query panel. It does not measure hidden model training data, private retrieval signals or recommendation causality. A visible citation is not proof that a source caused a company mention or recommendation.

Answer Capsule
Did Reddit lose citation visibility in Gemini for high-stakes credit, debt, banking and lending decisions from July to September 2026? The aggregate balanced panel moved downward, with Reddit citation-event share falling 37.6%, from 1.41% to 0.88%, and response coverage falling 37.9%, from 2.03% to 1.26%. However, the strict matched panel did not confirm a directional decline: among 154 matched scenarios, Reddit recorded 1 loss and 2 gains, moving from 0.65% to 1.30% matched coverage, with McNemar p = 1.0. The strongest conclusion is that Reddit was a low-frequency, unstable Gemini citation source in this financial decision panel.
Key Findings
- Balanced Reddit citation-event share in Gemini fell from 1.41% in July to 0.88% in September, down 37.6%.
- Balanced Reddit response citation coverage fell from 2.03% to 1.26%, down 37.9%.
- The strict matched Gemini panel contained 154 exact prompt-plus-platform scenarios.
- The matched table contained 1 Reddit loss, 2 Reddit gains, 0 persistent Reddit scenarios and 151 neither-month scenarios.
- Matched Reddit response coverage moved from 0.65% to 1.30%.
- The exact two-sided McNemar result is p = 1.0, so the matched sample does not support a statistically directional change.
- Across the full three-month Gemini financial source slice, Reddit appeared in 30 of 2,423 responses, or 1.24%.
- Reddit generated 31 of 3,772 public-facing citation events, approximately 0.82%.
- Reddit ranked #25 overall in the three-month Gemini financial source market.
- Reddit's monthly financial source rank moved #13 in July, #48 in August and #24 in September.
- Reddit appeared across 10 of the 16 financial source labels in the three-month Gemini source ranking.
- The Gemini financial source market contained 460 registrable cited domains and 3,605 domain-response appearances.
- The public ranking excluded 98 citations to myactivity.google.com as Google account-activity infrastructure rather than treating them as editorial source citations.
- The Top 10 financial domains accounted for 42.7% of domain-response appearances, showing that Gemini's financial source market was concentrated around finance-specific publishers and institutions.
- Broad September 2026 Gemini research from Ahrefs ranked Reddit #1 across more than 3 million U.S. all-topic queries, while this financial panel ranked Reddit #25. That is a strong example of category denominator effects.

Questions This Study Answers
- Was Reddit a major direct citation source in Gemini for high-stakes financial consumer decisions?
- Did a strict same-prompt comparison confirm the aggregate July-to-September decline?
- Why can Reddit rank #1 in broad Gemini research but only #25 in a financial decision panel?
Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions
Article 56 isolates Reddit inside Gemini for Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending. Its operating value is that aggregate visibility and strict matched-prompt evidence point in different directions.
Across the three-month Gemini Credit source study, Reddit ranked #25 overall at 1.24% response citation coverage. Its monthly rank moved #13 in July, #48 in August and #24 in September.
The balanced 13-vertical endpoint moved downward: Reddit citation-event share fell 37.6%, from 1.41% to 0.88%, while response citation coverage fell 37.9%, from 2.03% to 1.26%.
The strict matched panel did not confirm that direction. Across 154 exact prompt-plus-Gemini scenarios, Reddit recorded 1 loss, 2 gains, 0 persistent citations and 151 neither-month scenarios. Matched coverage moved from 0.65% to 1.30%, and exact McNemar p = 1.0.
The responsible commercial conclusion is therefore low-frequency instability, not a matched-prompt Reddit collapse. Publishers should avoid turning a small-base aggregate decline into a universal Gemini claim. Brands and CMOs should keep raw counts beside percentages and measure Gemini separately from Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews.
The surrounding Gemini financial source market is concentrated but only moderately persistent. Its Top 100 account for 84.5% of domain-response appearances, the Top 10 account for 42.7%, only 56 domains remained in all three monthly Top 100s, and median monthly Top 100 Jaccard similarity was 49.3%.
Only 46 of Gemini's financial Top 100 domains also appear in Gemini's broader High-Stakes Consumer Decisions Top 100. The final Credit child-study lists show Gemini sharing 70 domains with Google AI Overviews, 70 with Google AI Mode, 68 with Perplexity, 55 with ChatGPT and 36 with Microsoft Copilot.
The broader Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending Citation Authority Study reports 77.0% median monthly Top 100 persistence, 44.9% median cross-platform Top 100 portability, and an approximate 32.1 percentage-point Persistence-Portability Gap. It also reports 26 domains appearing in all six final platform Top 100s, from 222 distinct domains in the union.
The Persistence-Portability Gap framework helps interpret Article 56 correctly. The category-level financial source layer is more persistent over time than universally portable across engines, while Gemini's own source market rotates more quickly. Article 56 should not create a Gemini-specific gap by subtracting 49.3% temporal persistence from a single pairwise platform overlap.
Citation visibility should remain separate from brand mentions, recommendation rate, rank, sentiment, citation-recommendation coupling and downstream business outcomes.
Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings
| Research finding | What financial publishers can responsibly do or say | What brands and CMOs can reasonably do |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit ranked #25 across the three-month Gemini financial source study at 1.24% coverage | "Reddit was a low-frequency source in this defined Gemini financial market." | Build Gemini source priorities around the actual financial leaders rather than broad social assumptions. |
| Balanced event share fell 37.6% and response coverage fell 37.9% | "Aggregate Reddit visibility moved lower on the same 13-vertical endpoint." | Keep raw counts next to percentages because the starting base is small. |
| The matched panel produced 1 loss and 2 gains | "The same-prompt panel did not confirm a directional Reddit decline." | Do not call the Gemini pattern a citation collapse. |
| McNemar p is 1.0 | "There is no statistically detectable loss-gain imbalance in the matched Gemini sample." | Treat the matched evidence as inconclusive rather than negative. |
| The Top 100 capture 84.5% of appearances but median monthly persistence is 49.3% | "Gemini's financial source market is concentrated but still rotates materially." | Maintain a recurring source core while refreshing the monthly perimeter. |
| Only 46 financial Top 100 domains also appear in Gemini's broad High-Stakes Top 100 | "Category authority can differ sharply from broad Gemini authority." | Use financial-category source maps for PR, partnerships and earned-media planning. |
| Gemini shares 70 Credit Top 100 domains with both Google AI surfaces but only 36 with Copilot | "Portability varies materially by engine pair." | Maintain a shared cross-platform core plus Gemini-specific priorities. |
| The Credit family shows 77.0% persistence but 44.9% portability | "The broader source portfolio is more durable over time than universally transferable across engines." | Separate source-specific drift, platform-category churn, family persistence and cross-platform portability. |
| Reddit's counts are very small in the matched panel | "Relative percentage changes should be interpreted alongside absolute counts." | Require raw counts next to percentage changes for low-frequency metrics. |
| Citation visibility is not recommendation causality | "This study measures source presence, not endorsement." | Track citations separately from mentions, recommendations, rank, sentiment and conversion outcomes. |

Where Article 56 Fits in the High-Stakes Consumer Decisions Corpus
Article 56 is a child analysis of the Credit Reddit decline study and the Gemini Credit source study. The broader interpretation comes from the 2026 AI Citation Authority Study, cross-platform citation overlap, citation drift, and the Persistence-Portability Gap framework.
The Core Finding: Reddit's Aggregate Gemini Share Declined From an Already Low Baseline
Questions This Section Answers
- How large was the balanced July-to-September decline?
- Was Reddit a high-frequency Gemini source before the decline?
- Do event share and response coverage tell the same aggregate story?
The primary endpoint comparison uses the 13 financial verticals represented in both July and September 2026.
| Metric | July 2026 | September 2026 | Relative change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reddit share of Gemini citation events | 1.41% | 0.88% | -37.6% |
| Gemini responses citing Reddit | 2.03% | 1.26% | -37.9% |
Both aggregate measures moved downward by roughly 38%.
But the starting point matters. Reddit was not a large Gemini financial source in July. A 1.41% citation-event share and 2.03% response coverage represent a much smaller direct citation footprint than Reddit had on ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews or Perplexity in the same financial family.
That makes relative percentage changes more sensitive to small count movements.
A source moving from a low single-digit citation count to an even smaller count can produce a large relative decline without representing the same commercial magnitude as a high-base source losing hundreds of citations.
The Strict Matched Test Does Not Confirm a Directional Reddit Decline
Questions This Section Answers
- What happened when the same prompt and platform were held constant?
- Did Reddit disappear more often than it appeared?
- Does the paired test support calling this a Gemini citation collapse?
The strict matched analysis requires the same normalized prompt on the same Gemini platform surface to have one eligible analytical observation in July and one in September.
154 scenarios met the matching contract.
| July Reddit citation | September Reddit citation | Matched scenarios |
|---|---|---|
| Yes | Yes | 0 |
| Yes | No | 1 |
| No | Yes | 2 |
| No | No | 151 |
| Total | 154 |
Matched Reddit response coverage moved from 1 / 154 = 0.65% in July to 2 / 154 = 1.30% in September.
The exact two-sided McNemar p-value is 1.0.
That does not mean Reddit meaningfully improved in Gemini. The matched counts are too small for that conclusion.
It means the stricter paired data does not corroborate a directional decline. One Reddit-positive scenario disappeared, while two previously Reddit-negative scenarios gained Reddit.
The result is best described as low-frequency instability.

Aggregate and Matched Results Can Move in Opposite Directions
Questions This Section Answers
- How can aggregate Reddit coverage fall while matched coverage rises?
- Does that mean one of the analyses is wrong?
- Which view should a marketer use?
The balanced aggregate and strict matched analyses answer different questions.
The balanced endpoint asks:
Across the same financial vertical universe, what percentage of all eligible Gemini responses and citations involved Reddit at each endpoint?
The strict matched test asks:
For exact prompt-plus-platform scenarios that can be paired cleanly at both endpoints, did Reddit persist, disappear or newly appear?
Those denominators are not the same.
The aggregate panel contains many more observations. The matched panel is narrower and controls prompt identity more strictly.
Because Reddit is so rare in the Gemini financial sample, small count differences can reverse the apparent direction. In the matched panel, a change from one Reddit-positive scenario to two doubles the rate. In the larger aggregate panel, the overall share still declines.
This is why the article reports both.
For commercial measurement, the aggregate panel is better for describing the broader source environment. The matched panel is better for testing persistence on the same prompts.
Neither should be reduced to a single "Gemini Reddit score."
Reddit Ranked #25 in the Three-Month Gemini Financial Source Market
Questions This Section Answers
- How important was Reddit relative to financial publishers in Gemini?
- Which sources dominated the Gemini financial market?
- Did Reddit's broad-web reputation carry into financial decisions?
The full three-month Gemini financial source study contains 2,423 eligible responses, 3,772 public-facing citation events, 460 cited registrable domains and 3,605 domain-response appearances.
The leading domains by response citation coverage were:
| Rank | Domain | Response citation coverage |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | bankrate.com | 17.09% |
| 2 | money.com | 10.85% |
| 3 | experian.com | 6.85% |
| 4 | forbes.com | 5.78% |
| 5 | wallethub.com | 5.70% |
| 6 | lendingtree.com | 5.24% |
| 7 | creditkarma.com | 4.09% |
| 8 | credible.com | 3.14% |
| 9 | sofi.com | 2.85% |
| 10 | navyfederal.org | 1.98% |
| 25 | reddit.com | 1.24% |
Reddit was cited in 30 responses and produced 31 citation events across the three-month slice.
It appeared across 10 financial source labels, so the source was not confined to a single niche. But it was not a leading Gemini financial authority surface by direct citation frequency.
The contrast with Bankrate is substantial: Bankrate's 17.09% coverage is nearly fourteen times Reddit's 1.24% three-month coverage in this measured financial panel.

Reddit's Monthly Rank Was Volatile, Not Monotonically Down
Questions This Section Answers
- Did Reddit fall every month in Gemini?
- How much did its monthly rank move?
- Why is monthly rank useful alongside coverage metrics?
Reddit's monthly rank moved sharply during the quarter.
| Month | Reddit rank in Gemini financial source market |
|---|---|
| July 2026 | #13 |
| August 2026 | #48 |
| September 2026 | #24 |
The pattern is decline followed by partial recovery.
That is different from a clean month-over-month deterioration story.
Reddit dropped thirty-five positions from July to August, then recovered twenty-four positions from August to September.
Rank alone does not tell us whether Reddit gained or lost absolute citations because rank also depends on movement by competing domains. But it demonstrates that Reddit's relative position inside Gemini's financial source market was unstable.
This is another reason to avoid describing Gemini with the same collapse narrative that fits ChatGPT or Perplexity more clearly.
Gemini's Reddit Pattern Differs Sharply From Other AI Platforms
Questions This Section Answers
- How did Gemini compare with ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI search surfaces?
- Which platforms showed the strongest Reddit losses?
- Why does a blended Reddit metric hide commercially important differences?
The parent financial Reddit study shows materially different platform patterns.
| Platform | July Reddit event share | September Reddit event share | Relative change | Matched losses | Matched gains |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 9.96% | 2.93% | -70.6% | 52 | 5 |
| Perplexity | 4.46% | 1.02% | -77.2% | 8 | 0 |
| Google AI Mode | 3.89% | 2.43% | -37.6% | 50 | 16 |
| Google AI Overviews | 3.87% | about 2.9% | about -25% | 40 | 23 |
| Gemini | 1.41% | 0.88% | -37.6% | 1 | 2 |
The relative aggregate decline in Gemini is similar to Google AI Mode at approximately 38%, but the absolute source footprint is dramatically smaller.
The matched data is even more different.
ChatGPT had 52 losses against 5 gains. Perplexity had 8 losses and 0 gains. Google AI Mode had 50 losses and 16 gains. Gemini had only 1 loss and 2 gains.
A blended statistic would hide those differences.
For financial brands, this means a Reddit strategy cannot be evaluated once across "AI." It has to be evaluated separately by platform.

Why Broad Gemini Research Can Rank Reddit #1 While Financial Research Ranks It #25
Questions This Section Answers
- Does this financial result conflict with Ahrefs' September Gemini ranking?
- How much does query category change the source leaderboard?
- Which denominator differences matter most?
Ahrefs' September 2026 Gemini study analyzed more than 3 million U.S. queries across all topics and ranked Reddit #1 with 28.5% mention share among the leading cited sources.
This financial decision study ranks Reddit #25 with 1.24% response citation coverage.
Those numbers are not directly comparable, and the rankings do not conflict.
The two studies differ in at least four major ways:
- Query population. Ahrefs uses an all-topic U.S. query universe. LLM Authority Index isolates high-stakes credit, debt, banking and lending decisions.
- Metric. Ahrefs reports mention share among leading sources. This article reports response citation coverage and citation-event share.
- Source market. Financial prompts heavily favor Bankrate, Money.com, Experian, WalletHub, LendingTree, Credit Karma, Credible and other category specialists.
- Study design. This article includes balanced endpoint and matched prompt tests in addition to the three-month source ranking.
The gap between broad and category-specific rankings is commercially important.
A financial company planning earned media from a general Gemini leaderboard could overestimate Reddit's direct citation role and underestimate finance-specific publishers.

Tinuiti's Research Also Shows Gemini Can Behave Differently From Other Google AI Surfaces
Tinuiti's AI Citation Trends research has repeatedly emphasized that source behavior differs by AI platform.
In its Q1 2026 report, Tinuiti reported that social media accounted for only about 3% of Gemini citations in January 2026, compared with larger social shares on Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. It also reported Reddit at roughly 0.1% of all Gemini citations in that January sample.
That historical measurement used different categories and a different collection system, so the number should not be treated as a benchmark for this July-September financial dataset.
Its importance is directional: independent research has also observed that Gemini can have a materially smaller Reddit and social citation footprint than other AI surfaces.
Tinuiti's Q3 2026 public report continues to emphasize platform-specific source behavior across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.

What This Means for Financial Brands and CMOs
Questions This Section Answers
- Should a finance brand treat Reddit as a primary Gemini citation channel?
- Which source surfaces appear more important in Gemini financial decisions?
- How should teams measure a source that appears infrequently?
1. Do not over-index on Reddit for Gemini financial visibility
Reddit may still matter for reputation, discussion, consumer language and other AI platforms. But direct Gemini citations in this financial panel were infrequent.
A Gemini-specific authority strategy should place more emphasis on the financial publishers and institutions Gemini actually cites most often.
2. Prioritize financial category sources
Bankrate, Money.com, Experian, WalletHub, LendingTree, Credit Karma, Credible, SoFi and Navy Federal all ranked above Reddit in the three-month Gemini financial source market.
3. Treat low-frequency source metrics differently
When a source appears in only one or two matched scenarios, percentage changes can look dramatic while the absolute commercial difference remains small.
Always report counts next to percentages.
4. Measure Gemini separately from AI Mode and AI Overviews
All three are Google AI products, but their citation ecosystems differ materially. A source strategy that works for Google AI Mode does not automatically transfer to Gemini.
5. Track citation and recommendation outcomes separately
A financial company can gain recommendation visibility without a Reddit citation, and a Reddit citation does not prove that Reddit caused the recommendation.
Track source citation coverage, brand mentions, recommendation rate, comparison inclusion, sentiment and owned-domain citations separately.
What This Means for Financial Publishers
Gemini's financial source market appears more category-specialized than broad Gemini leaderboards imply.
The Top 10 includes a high concentration of finance-specific publishers, comparison sites, financial institutions and credit-information brands.
That creates a more defensible publisher opportunity than claiming that one broad domain "controls Gemini."
Useful publisher metrics include:
- response citation coverage by financial vertical;
- month-specific source rank;
- URL-level citation recurrence;
- category lift versus Gemini overall;
- cross-platform coverage;
- matched prompt persistence; and
- correlation between publisher citation visibility and downstream brand recommendation patterns.
The proper claim is measured citation visibility in a defined decision environment, not Gemini trust or recommendation causality.

How This Study Relates to the Parent Financial Reddit Study
The parent Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending study found a 46.2% decline in Reddit citation-event share across the balanced all-platform financial panel.
This Gemini child analysis shows a smaller 37.6% event-share decline from a much lower baseline.
More importantly, the matched pattern is different.
Across all platforms, the parent study found 151 Reddit losses and 46 gains. In Gemini alone, the matched subset contained 1 loss and 2 gains.
The parent study therefore supports the conclusion that Reddit weakened across the broader financial AI ecosystem during the quarter. The Gemini child study adds an important qualification: Gemini was not a major contributor to that directional matched-pair decline.
How This Study Is Different
This article narrows the broader Reddit finance research to one platform, one high-stakes decision family and one three-month research window.
It combines:
- a 2,423-response Gemini Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending source slice;
- a balanced 13-vertical July-to-September endpoint;
- a 154-scenario strict matched prompt-plus-Gemini test;
- both citation-event share and response citation coverage;
- a full three-month source-market context containing 460 cited domains;
- Reddit's monthly rank movement from #13 to #48 to #24;
- explicit treatment of low-base statistical instability; and
- comparison with broad Gemini research from Ahrefs and platform-specific citation research from Tinuiti.
The narrow research question is:
How stable was Reddit as a directly cited source in Gemini for consequential credit, debt, banking and lending consumer decisions from July through September 2026?
Why AI Citation Studies Can Disagree
Questions This Section Answers
- Why can broad Gemini research show Reddit dominating while this financial study shows low coverage?
- Why can aggregate and matched analyses point in different directions?
- What should a marketer compare before adopting an external benchmark?
Different AI citation studies can produce very different Reddit results without either study necessarily being wrong.
Query population
High-stakes financial prompts are not representative of the entire web. Broad all-topic Gemini research contains many categories where Reddit may be more frequently useful.
Denominator
Citation-event share, response citation coverage and mention share answer different questions.
Platform surface
Gemini should not be merged with Google AI Mode or Google AI Overviews merely because all three are Google products.
Time window
A January 2026 snapshot, a July-September 2026 trend panel and a September 2026 all-topic snapshot measure different periods.
Category composition
The balanced endpoint excludes financial labels that do not have July source data so that September category expansion does not distort the trend.
Low baseline
When Reddit appears in only one or two matched Gemini scenarios, one additional citation can double the measured rate.
Prompt matching
Aggregate monthly panels include many observations. The matched panel includes only prompt-platform scenarios that satisfy the strict endpoint pairing contract.
Technical exclusions
The public Gemini financial ranking excludes 98 myactivity.google.com citation entries rather than treating them as an editorial domain. Studies that keep account-activity or infrastructure URLs may produce different denominators.
Prompt weighting
The research panel is not weighted by search volume, credit-card applications, loan volume, account openings, revenue, media spend or conversion probability.
The useful question is not "What percentage of Gemini citations come from Reddit everywhere?" It is "How often does Reddit appear for this platform, this decision category, this time period and this measurement definition?"

Verticals Covered
The full Gemini Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending source study contains 16 source labels:
- Auto Refinance Loans
- Bad Credit Loans
- Best Banks
- Certificates of Deposits
- Credit Cards
- Credit Cards for Building Credit
- Credit Monitoring
- Credit Repair
- Debt Relief & Consolidation
- Home Equity Loans
- Money Market Accounts
- Personal Loans and Online Lenders
- Savings Account
- Student Loan Refinance
- Student Loans
- Tax Relief
The balanced July-to-September endpoint uses 13 verticals represented at both endpoints.
The three source labels without July source data are:
- Home Equity Loans
- Savings Account
- Student Loan Refinance
Those missing July source sets are not converted into measured zeros.
Methodology
Source archive
This study uses the frozen July-September 2026 LLM Authority Index High-Stakes Consumer Decisions corpus underlying the Gemini financial source study and the parent financial Reddit analysis.
Raw archive totals are larger than the screened analytical samples. Raw records should not be substituted for the filtered denominators reported in this article.
Platform filter
Only observations assigned to the Gemini platform family are included.
Category filter
Observations are included when their source membership belongs to the Credit, Debt, Banking and Lending family.
Extraction failures
Observations explicitly marked as extraction failures are excluded from eligible response denominators.
Exact analytical repeat handling
Exact analytical repeats are controlled using the project's documented repeat rules so duplicate records do not inflate citation coverage.
Prompt normalization
Matched prompt text is normalized using Unicode NFKC normalization, case folding, whitespace collapse and trimming.
Domain normalization
Citation URLs are parsed to hostname, lowercased, stripped of leading www where applicable and consolidated to registrable domain using Public Suffix List logic.
Reddit identification
Reddit is identified at the registrable-domain level as reddit.com.
Public technical exclusions
The Gemini financial public ranking excludes 98 citations to myactivity.google.com as Google account-activity infrastructure rather than treating the host as an editorial publisher.
Citation-event share
Reddit citation-event share = Reddit citation events / all eligible public citation events
A response can contribute more than one Reddit citation event when multiple eligible Reddit URLs are present.
Response citation coverage
Reddit response citation coverage = eligible responses citing Reddit at least once / all eligible responses
Reddit counts no more than once per response for this metric.
Balanced endpoint
The July-to-September endpoint uses the 13 financial verticals available in both months.
Home Equity Loans, Savings Account and Student Loan Refinance are excluded from the balanced endpoint because the frozen source corpus does not contain July datasets for those verticals.
Matched prompt-plus-platform test
The strict matched Gemini panel contains 154 scenarios.
The contingency table is:
- both July and September cite Reddit: 0
- July cites Reddit, September does not: 1
- July does not cite Reddit, September cites Reddit: 2
- neither month cites Reddit: 151
Matched response coverage moves from 0.649% to 1.299%.
The exact two-sided McNemar p-value is 1.0.
Three-month source-market context
The related Gemini financial source ranking contains:
- 2,423 eligible responses
- 3,772 public-facing citation events
- 460 registrable cited domains
- 3,605 domain-response appearances
- 98 excluded myactivity.google.com infrastructure citations
Within that three-month slice, Reddit appears in 30 responses, generates 31 citation events, spans 10 financial source labels and ranks #25 overall.

Limitations
- The study covers one frozen three-month period and should not be treated as a permanent Gemini rule.
- The prompt panel is designed for research comparability and commercial relevance, not search-volume-weighted market share.
- Visible citation does not prove recommendation causality, hidden retrieval influence or training-data use.
- Reddit's Gemini counts are small, so relative percentage changes can be unstable.
- The strict matched panel contains only three discordant Reddit scenarios, limiting statistical power.
- The balanced endpoint excludes three financial labels without July source data.
- Domain-level aggregation hides page-level source differences.
- Technical-source cleanup can make denominators differ from raw exports.
- Gemini behavior can vary by geography, account state, product surface, model version, retrieval configuration and rollout.
- Monthly rank movement reflects both Reddit's movement and movement by competing domains.
- External studies use different query populations, dates, markets, metrics and collection systems and should not be treated as interchangeable benchmarks.
- The statistical test measures the matched loss-gain imbalance. It does not identify the reason for any source change.
