LLM Authority Index Research | High-Stakes Consumer Decisions | July-September 2026
LLM Authority Index analyzed 14,138 deduplicated AI responses and 62,932 visible citation events across 11 investing, retirement, mortgage and financial consumer verticals and six public AI platform families.
NerdWallet was the most frequently cited domain by response-level coverage, appearing in 16.0% of category responses. Reddit ranked #2 at 12.4%, Forbes #3 at 12.1%, Investopedia #4 at 11.9%, and CNBC #5 at 11.2%.
The larger commercial finding is not simply the order of the Top 100. This category combines two different forms of citation authority:
- Broad financial authority, where domains such as NerdWallet, Forbes, Investopedia, Bankrate, Yahoo, U.S. News and YouTube appear across all 11 source verticals; and
- Specialist authority, where a narrower site can become one of the most frequently cited sources for a commercially valuable submarket. JM Bullion appeared in 27.0% of Gold IRA and precious-metals responses, Kraken in 20.3% of Crypto Exchange responses, StockBrokers.com in 19.6% of Online Stock Broker responses, and Catalina Structured Funding in 23.5% of Structured Settlement responses.
For CMOs and publishers, that distinction matters. A broad publisher can offer cross-vertical reach, while a specialist can offer unusually concentrated citation visibility inside a specific buyer journey.
This category study is part of the 2026 AI Citation Authority Study, which analyzes 278,499 visible citation events from 60,881 deduplicated AI responses across high-stakes consumer decisions.
Answer Capsule
Which websites are most frequently cited by AI systems for high-stakes investing, retirement, mortgage and financial consumer decisions? In the LLM Authority Index July-September 2026 panel, NerdWallet ranked #1 with 16.0% response citation coverage, followed by Reddit at 12.4%, Forbes at 12.1%, Investopedia at 11.9%, CNBC at 11.2%, Money.com at 10.4%, YouTube at 8.8%, Bankrate at 7.9%, Yahoo at 6.9%, and Fidelity at 6.5%. The Top 100 domains accounted for 59.9% of domain-response appearances. However, the leading sources differed substantially by platform and by vertical, meaning a publisher strategy for mortgage, crypto, investing, retirement, precious metals or structured settlements should not be inferred from one blended category list.

Key Findings
- The primary category analysis contains 14,138 deduplicated responses and 62,932 visible citation events after the published failure, exact-repeat, domain-normalization and infrastructure rules.
- The dataset contains 4,721 registrable cited domains before publisher-type classification.
- NerdWallet ranked #1 at 16.0% response coverage and remained #1 in July, August and September.
- Reddit ranked #2 overall at 12.4%, but moved from #2 in July to #4 in August and #6 in September.
- Investopedia ranked #4 overall but had 1.8 times its overall high-stakes response coverage inside this category, showing a strong financial-category concentration.
- Fidelity and Charles Schwab each had roughly four times their overall high-stakes response coverage inside this category, illustrating the value of measuring specialist category lift rather than only overall web prominence.
- The Top 25 domains accounted for 40.6% of response-level domain appearances, and the Top 100 accounted for 59.9%.
- 70 domains appeared in the category Top 100 in July, August and September.
- Only 19 domains appeared in the Top 100 for all six platform families.
- The median pairwise overlap between platform Top 100 lists was only 28.2% by Jaccard similarity.
- Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews had the most similar Top 100 source lists, with 83 shared domains and 70.9% Jaccard similarity.
- Gemini and Microsoft Copilot had the least similar lists in this category, sharing only 26 Top 100 domains, or 14.9% Jaccard similarity.
- Specialist sources were often dominant inside individual verticals even when they were not category-wide leaders.

Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions
This study is research-based, but its purpose is commercial decision support.
Investing, retirement, mortgage and financial-services marketers operate in a source market where broad financial publishers, first-party financial institutions, specialist comparison sites and narrow vertical experts can all matter. A blended category ranking is useful, but it does not tell a CMO which sources matter most for a specific buyer journey such as Mortgage Refinance, Crypto Exchanges, Online Stock Brokers, Gold IRAs, Robo-Advisors or Structured Settlements.
For publishers, that creates a measurable commercial asset: AI citation visibility can be documented by category, vertical, platform and time rather than reduced to pageviews, organic rankings or one blended authority score.
For financial brands and CMOs, the same research answers a different operating question:
Which sources are already present around the high-value financial decisions our customers are asking AI systems to help them make?
The category also provides an important example of the Persistence-Portability Gap.
Using the frozen Article 07 parent analysis:
- Concentration: the category Top 100 accounted for 59.9% of response-level domain appearances.
- Persistence: the median of the three monthly Top 100 Jaccard comparisons was 66.7%.
- Portability: the reported median pairwise Jaccard similarity across the six platform Top 100 lists was 28.2%.
Under the same summary-based operationalization used in Article 01, those displayed values produce an approximate 38.5 percentage-point Persistence-Portability Gap for this decision family.
That category-level gap is exploratory. It is calculated from the frozen parent-study summary statistics, not from a newly reconciled raw-data rebuild or a controlled platform-by-month experiment.
The commercial meaning is still useful: the leading financial source portfolio was more persistent over time than transferable across platforms. A source can be strategically important across the category and still be much more valuable on one AI engine than another.
This category also has unusually strong specialist behavior. JM Bullion, Kraken, StockBrokers.com, Catalina Structured Funding and other specialists can be disproportionately important inside one commercially valuable decision path even when they are not category-wide leaders.
That supports a three-tier operating model:
- Cross-vertical financial core: publishers and institutions that recur across several financial decisions and multiple AI engines.
- Platform-specific source layer: sources that matter disproportionately on Google AI Search, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Microsoft Copilot.
- Vertical-specific specialist layer: sources that are unusually important inside Mortgage, Crypto, Gold IRA, Robo-Advisor, Stock Broker, Structured Settlement or another narrow buyer journey.
Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings
| Research finding | What financial publishers can responsibly say | What financial brands and CMOs can reasonably do |
|---|---|---|
| NerdWallet, Reddit, Forbes, Investopedia and CNBC lead the category-wide source map | "Our domain is measurably visible in the AI source environment surrounding high-stakes financial decisions." | Use high-coverage sources as a strategic research tier, then evaluate fit for the exact vertical, platform and commercial prompt cluster. |
| The Top 100 account for 59.9% of domain-response appearances | "Financial AI citation authority is meaningfully concentrated, but less concentrated than some other high-stakes decision families." | Start with the recurring source layer, but expect a substantial specialist and long-tail market. |
| The Top 25 account for 40.6% of domain-response appearances | "A relatively small group captures a substantial share of measured source visibility." | Treat the Top 25 as a priority research set, not a complete earned-media list. |
| 70 domains remain in the category Top 100 across all three months | "The category contains a persistent source core." | Maintain a durable publisher map while continuing to monitor monthly movement around important prompts. |
| Median monthly Top 100 persistence is 66.7% | "Leading source membership is persistent, but not static." | Use persistence as a planning signal rather than assuming a source relationship will remain equally valuable every month. |
| Frozen-parent median platform portability is 28.2% | "Financial citation authority transfers poorly across AI platforms relative to its temporal persistence." | Maintain separate platform source maps and do not use one universal publisher outreach list. |
| The exploratory parent-study Persistence-Portability Gap is about 38.5 percentage points | "The financial source portfolio is more durable over time than portable across engines." | Separate the time question from the platform question when allocating PR, content and partnership resources. |
| Only 19 domains appear in all six platform Top 100 lists in the frozen parent analysis | "Cross-platform Top 100 presence is a scarce form of measured financial source authority." | Give cross-platform sources additional attention when the campaign objective spans several AI engines. |
| Specialist sources dominate selected verticals | "Our strongest measured authority may be concentrated in a specific financial decision rather than the full category." | Prioritize specialists when their vertical relevance exceeds that of a larger general financial publisher. |
| Broad financial sources and narrow specialists coexist | "Our commercial value should be described in the market where the data shows strength." | Build source strategy from the actual buyer journey, not from one category-wide leaderboard. |
| Platform source rankings differ materially | "Our strongest AI citation position should be described by engine." | Track Google AI Search, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot separately. |
| Citation visibility does not establish recommendation causality | "Our content is measurably present in the citation layer." | Use citation visibility to prioritize research and outreach, then separately measure brand mentions, recommendation rate, ranking, sentiment and citation-recommendation coupling before claiming business impact. |
The daily operating implication is straightforward: financial AI search marketing should combine a durable category source map with platform-specific and vertical-specific source maps.
Citation visibility is evidence of source presence, not proof that a publication, relationship or placement causes an AI system to recommend a financial brand, product or provider.

The Top 100 should not be interpreted as a universal financial-media ranking. It reflects this particular high-stakes consumer query population, measurement window, platform mix and methodology.

Citation Concentration
| Ranking depth | Share of domain-response appearances | Share of citation events |
|---|---|---|
| Top 10 | 27.85% | 31.19% |
| Top 25 | 40.59% | 44.87% |
| Top 50 | 50.24% | 54.28% |
| Top 100 | 59.86% | 63.64% |
The category has a recognizable group of recurring sources, but it is not dominated by a tiny handful of sites. More than 4,700 registrable domains appear somewhere in the category corpus.
That matters for publishers and brands. A broad Top 100 list is useful for strategic source mapping, but a vertical cut is often more commercially informative when the objective is a particular product line.
Broad Publishers and Specialist Authorities Play Different Roles
Eight domains in this analysis appeared in all 11 category verticals:
- nerdwallet.com
- reddit.com
- forbes.com
- investopedia.com
- youtube.com
- bankrate.com
- yahoo.com
- usnews.com
CNBC and Money.com each appeared across 10 of the 11 category verticals. Fidelity appeared across nine.
These broad-coverage domains can be relevant to publishers selling cross-category financial reach and to brands running multiple financial product lines.
But specialist domains can be much stronger inside a single market than their category-wide rank suggests.
Examples include:
- JM Bullion, cited in 27.0% of Gold IRA and precious-metals responses;
- APMEX, cited in 24.3% of Gold IRA and precious-metals responses;
- Kraken, cited in 20.3% of Crypto Exchange responses;
- Coinbase, cited in 17.1% of Crypto Exchange responses;
- StockBrokers.com, cited in 19.6% of Online Stock Broker responses;
- Fidelity, cited in 19.5% of Online Stock Broker responses;
- Catalina Structured Funding, cited in 23.5% of Structured Settlement responses; and
- Annuity.org, cited in 18.9% of Structured Settlement responses and 15.2% of Annuity responses.
This is one reason LLM Authority Index does not recommend using one overall citation list as a substitute for category or vertical research.

This table is intentionally included in the category study so readers can answer vertical-level questions without requiring 11 separate thin research pages.
What publishers can learn from the vertical cuts
A publisher with broad financial coverage can use the table to document breadth. A specialist can use it to document depth.
For example, Money.com ranks #6 across the entire category, appears across 10 verticals, and is cited across all six platform families. Its strongest individual roles include Reverse Mortgage and Gold IRAs/precious metals. By contrast, JM Bullion has much narrower category breadth but extraordinary concentration inside the precious-metals vertical.
Neither pattern is inherently "better." They represent different kinds of commercial publisher value.

Platform Differences Are Large
The same financial publisher does not have the same visibility across every AI platform.
| Platform family | Category responses | Five leading cited domains by response coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | 4,094 | nerdwallet.com 17.5%; youtube.com 17.3%; reddit.com 16.3%; investopedia.com 15.4%; cnbc.com 14.4% |
| Google AI Mode | 3,684 | nerdwallet.com 23.1%; investopedia.com 20.3%; reddit.com 20.2%; cnbc.com 19.6%; money.com 14.3% |
| ChatGPT | 1,348 | forbes.com 31.1%; nerdwallet.com 18.6%; reddit.com 17.8%; wsj.com 12.4%; bankrate.com 11.1% |
| Perplexity | 1,648 | nerdwallet.com 10.4%; investopedia.com 8.9%; businessinsider.com 7.5%; money.com 7.2%; bankrate.com 6.4% |
| Gemini | 1,710 | money.com 12.9%; forbes.com 5.0%; bankrate.com 4.8%; kraken.com 2.6%; schwab.com 2.2% |
| Microsoft Copilot | 1,654 | forbes.com 20.7%; nerdwallet.com 15.8%; cnbc.com 11.1%; fool.com 10.4%; bankrate.com 7.9% |
A few examples illustrate the divergence:
- ChatGPT: Forbes led at 31.1% response coverage, followed by NerdWallet at 18.6% and Reddit at 17.8%.
- Google AI Mode: NerdWallet led at 23.2%, followed by Investopedia at 20.3%, Reddit at 20.2% and CNBC at 19.6%.
- Google AI Overviews: NerdWallet led at 17.5%, followed by YouTube at 17.3%, Reddit at 16.3% and Investopedia at 15.4%.
- Gemini: Money.com ranked first at 12.9%, materially above the rest of Gemini's category list.
- Microsoft Copilot: Forbes led at 20.7% and NerdWallet followed at 15.8%.
- Perplexity: NerdWallet led at 10.4%, followed by Investopedia at 8.9% and Business Insider at 7.5%.
The commercial implication is straightforward: a financial publisher strategy should be platform-specific rather than built from a single blended ranking.

Top 100 Source Overlap by Platform
Only 19 domains appeared in the Top 100 for all six platform families in this category.
| Platform pair | Shared Top 100 domains | Jaccard similarity |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Mode vs. Google AI Overviews | 83 | 70.94% |
| Gemini vs. Google AI Mode | 60 | 42.86% |
| Gemini vs. Google AI Overviews | 60 | 42.86% |
| Google AI Overviews vs. Perplexity | 57 | 39.86% |
| ChatGPT vs. Google AI Overviews | 53 | 36.05% |
| Google AI Mode vs. Perplexity | 52 | 35.14% |
| ChatGPT vs. Google AI Mode | 51 | 34.23% |
| Gemini vs. Perplexity | 44 | 28.21% |
| ChatGPT vs. Perplexity | 42 | 26.58% |
| ChatGPT vs. Gemini | 40 | 25.00% |
| ChatGPT vs. Microsoft Copilot | 40 | 25.00% |
| Microsoft Copilot vs. Perplexity | 39 | 24.22% |
| Google AI Mode vs. Microsoft Copilot | 34 | 20.48% |
| Google AI Overviews vs. Microsoft Copilot | 34 | 20.48% |
| Gemini vs. Microsoft Copilot | 26 | 14.94% |
The median pairwise Top 100 overlap was 28.2%.
Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews were the closest pair, while Microsoft Copilot had particularly low overlap with several other platforms.
That does not establish that one engine is more or less authoritative. It establishes that the visible source ecosystems are different enough that brands should not assume transferability.
Versioning Note on the Platform Child Studies
The platform-overlap table above belongs to the frozen Article 07 parent analysis and should remain interpreted on that basis.
The later standalone platform studies in Articles 21, 22, 23, 37, 38 and 39 were generated from a subsequent analysis version and use slightly different deduplicated response denominators. For example, the frozen parent table reports 4,094 Google AI Overviews responses, 3,684 Google AI Mode responses, 1,348 ChatGPT responses, 1,648 Perplexity responses, 1,710 Gemini responses and 1,654 Microsoft Copilot responses. The later child studies report 4,129, 3,715, 1,373, 1,683, 1,743 and 1,664 respectively.
Recomputing Top 100 overlap directly from the six final child-study lists produces the same 19 domains present in all six platform Top 100s, but a slightly different median pairwise Jaccard of approximately 27.4% rather than the frozen parent's 28.2%.
Those versions should not be silently merged. The parent study's persistence-portability calculation therefore continues to use the frozen 28.2% portability value. Before a future consolidated release, the category should be rerun through one versioned pipeline so the parent and child denominators, Top 100 lists and pairwise overlap statistics are generated from the same frozen population.

Month-to-Month Persistence
The category Top 100 showed meaningful persistence over the three-month study window, but less persistence than the overall flagship panel.
| Month comparison | Shared Top 100 domains | Jaccard similarity |
|---|---|---|
| July vs. August | 80 | 66.67% |
| July vs. September | 84 | 72.41% |
| August vs. September | 77 | 62.60% |
Across all three months, 70 domains appeared in the category Top 100 every month.
NerdWallet remained #1 in all three months. Reddit declined from #2 in July to #6 in September, consistent with the broader Reddit trend documented in Reddit's Decline in AI Citations.

What the Results Mean for Publishers
Financial publishers can use independent citation measurements to support commercial conversations with brands and advertisers, but the claim should remain observational.
A publisher can responsibly document:
- its response-level citation coverage;
- the number of AI platforms citing it;
- the number of category verticals in which it appears;
- its position in an individual vertical;
- whether its citation visibility persists across months; and
- whether it has broad authority or specialist concentration.
A defensible publisher statement is:
Our domain is measurably present among the visible sources AI platforms cite when consumers research high-stakes financial decisions in this market.
A publisher should not turn the result into a promise that buying an ad, sponsored placement or editorial relationship will cause an AI system to recommend the advertiser.
Questions publishers can use this study to answer
- Do we have broad financial citation visibility or specialist category authority?
- Which AI platforms cite us most frequently?
- Which product verticals are responsible for our citation visibility?
- Can we show advertisers that our AI source visibility persisted over multiple months?
- How does our citation footprint compare with larger general financial publishers?

What the Results Mean for CMOs and Financial Brands
CMOs can use this research to build a more disciplined earned-media source map.
A practical approach is to separate sources into three groups:
Broad cross-vertical sources
These are domains such as NerdWallet, Forbes, Investopedia, Bankrate and Money.com that appear across many financial verticals and multiple platforms.
Specialist category authorities
These include sites such as StockBrokers.com, JM Bullion, APMEX, Kraken and Annuity.org that can become disproportionately visible inside one buyer journey.
Platform-specific sources
These are publishers or first-party sites whose visibility is unusually strong in one AI platform but not others.
The strategy should then be matched to the brand's actual prompt universe. A mortgage lender should not assume the source map for crypto exchanges is relevant merely because both sit inside a broad financial category.
How This Study Relates to Prior Research
The LLM Authority Index study is not the first research project to measure AI citations in finance, mortgage or real estate.
BrightEdge: Finance Source Concentration by Engine
BrightEdge analyzed finance citation presence in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT during August 2026. Its research found a much steeper concentration curve in Google AI Overviews than in ChatGPT, with the leading Google source appearing in roughly half of tracked finance prompts while ChatGPT's top five were more evenly distributed. BrightEdge explicitly recommends comparing cited-domain lists by engine rather than treating AI search as one source ecosystem. (BrightEdge finance and health citation study)
That conclusion is directionally consistent with the LLMAI platform-overlap results, although the studies use different prompt populations, time windows and denominators.
Citation Research: Real Estate and Home-Financing Sources
Citation Research's 2026 U.S. Real Estate AI Citation Report analyzed 612 prompts, 15,300 answer runs and 41,286 citation events across five platforms. Its scope includes home buying, selling, financing, regulation and market sentiment and found a heavily concentrated real-estate source ecosystem led by Zillow, Realtor.com and Redfin, with Investopedia, Reddit, Bankrate and NerdWallet also prominent. (Citation Research U.S. Real Estate report)
That study is useful prior art for mortgage and home-financing citation research. The LLMAI study covers mortgage and refinance but extends into investments, retirement, online advisors, stock brokers, crypto, Gold IRAs, annuities, reverse mortgages and structured settlements.
Why the Results Should Not Be Directly Compared
BrightEdge, Citation Research and LLM Authority Index use different prompt sets, platform combinations, weighting methods, time periods and citation metrics.
The fact that Bankrate or Investopedia has one percentage in another study and a different percentage here should not be interpreted as a contradiction without reconciling those methodological differences.

How the LLM Authority Index Study Is Different
The differentiator is the combination of:
- a high-stakes commercial consumer-decision focus;
- 11 financial source verticals inside one category study;
- six public AI platform families;
- three months of observations;
- response-level domain presence separated from raw citation events;
- explicit extraction-failure handling;
- cross-vertical exact-repeat handling;
- registrable-domain normalization; and
- both broad category rankings and vertical-specific source cuts.
This allows the study to show that broad financial authority and specialist financial authority can coexist in the same AI citation ecosystem.
Why Financial AI Citation Studies Can Disagree
Financial citation research is highly sensitive to the query population.
A study dominated by stock-price lookups can produce a very different source list from one dominated by mortgage comparison, retirement advice or crypto-wallet questions.
Important variables include:
- query intent;
- vertical mix;
- consumer versus professional questions;
- live-market versus evergreen topics;
- platform surface;
- month of collection;
- geography;
- citation extraction method;
- URL versus registrable-domain normalization;
- whether a domain counts once per response or once per citation event; and
- treatment of platform-owned results, product modules, maps and other non-editorial surfaces.
For that reason, this article treats external studies as methodological context rather than as directly interchangeable benchmark percentages.
Methodology
Parent research program
This category analysis uses the same frozen source archive and analytical framework as the 2026 AI Citation Authority Study.
Unit of analysis
The fundamental observation is one AI response associated with a prompt, month and raw platform surface.
Study window
The primary period is July through September 2026.
Explicit extraction failures
The raw source files assigned to this category contain 940 observations explicitly marked as extraction failures. Those records are excluded from valid-response analysis rather than treated as zero-citation responses.
Cross-vertical exact-repeat handling
Related financial verticals can contain overlapping prompts. To avoid counting the same extracted result multiple times in the category-wide ranking, observations are grouped by:
- month;
- exact raw platform surface;
- normalized prompt text; and
- exact set of original citation URLs.
One analytical record is retained for the category-wide count while all original vertical memberships remain available for vertical breadth analysis.
Prompt normalization
Prompt matching uses Unicode NFKC normalization, case folding, whitespace collapse and trimming.
Domain normalization
Citation URLs are reduced to registrable domains using the Public Suffix List while preserving original URLs for auditability.
Infrastructure exclusions
Obvious non-substantive technical artifacts such as image hosts, certain Bing map or ad wrappers, CloudFront infrastructure links, OpenAI image hosts and Google account-activity pages are excluded from the public source ranking.
Platform-owned substantive pages are not automatically removed solely because the platform owns the domain.
Primary ranking metric
The primary metric is response citation coverage:
response citation coverage = eligible category responses citing domain / all eligible deduplicated category responses
A domain counts no more than once per response for this metric.
Secondary metrics
The article also reports:
- raw citation events;
- platform breadth;
- vertical breadth;
- month-specific rank;
- concentration at Top 10, Top 25, Top 50 and Top 100; and
- platform and monthly Top 100 overlap.
Missing months
No missing month is treated as zero. Where an original source dataset was not produced for a month, it remains missing.
Want the full Authority Index
The paid deep-dive adds competitor threat profiles, the gap matrix, citation failure map, platform-by-platform recovery roadmap, and client-specific economic modeling.
Limitations
- This measures visible citations, not hidden model training data or every retrieval step.
- The 11 vertical labels are not statistically independent industries. Related financial verticals share prompts and source relationships.
- The category contains heterogeneous financial decisions. Mortgage, crypto, annuity and brokerage questions can have very different source ecosystems.
- The six platform families were not sampled in equal quantities. Raw cross-platform citation counts should not be treated as market share.
- Visible citation does not prove endorsement or recommendation causality.
- The study window is three months. Future platform or publisher changes can alter the rankings.
- Company-owned sites, publishers, community sites, media, government and nonprofits appear together in the primary domain table. A separate source-type analysis is needed before making publisher-only claims.
- Some platform-owned substantive sources remain in the data. These should be interpreted differently from independent editorial publishers.
- Prompt-level topical spillover exists in the source exports. Narrower future studies may apply additional prompt-level review.
- External studies cited in this article are not directly numerically comparable. Their prompt sets and measurement contracts differ.
Commercial Relationship Disclosure
LLM Authority Index is part of a business ecosystem that provides AI visibility, research and marketing services. Affiliated businesses may have current or historical commercial relationships with companies or publishers that appear in the dataset.
Commercial relationships are not inputs to the citation ranking methodology. No ranking should be interpreted as an endorsement by LLM Authority Index, and no commercial relationship should be interpreted as evidence that it caused citation visibility.
Dataset and Related Research
The full Top 100 used in this article should be published as a downloadable CSV generated from the same frozen ranking table as the page. The parent and child-study versions should remain separately versioned until the denominator differences described above are reconciled through a single raw-data pipeline.
