LLM Authority Index Research | Microsoft Copilot | Investing, Retirement, Mortgage and Financial Decisions | July-September 2026
Microsoft Copilot uses a distinct source market when consumers ask high-stakes questions about investing, retirement, mortgages, refinancing, financial advisors, stock brokers, robo-advisors, annuities, structured settlements, precious metals and crypto.
Across 1,664 deduplicated Microsoft Copilot responses covering 11 financial decision verticals, Forbes ranked #1, appearing as a cited domain in 20.73% of eligible responses. NerdWallet ranked #2 at 15.87%, CNBC #3 at 11.18%, The Motley Fool #4 at 10.46%, and Bankrate #5 at 7.81%.
This financial source market is more concentrated than Copilot overall. The category Top 100 account for 68.0% of domain-response appearances, compared with 56.7% in the broader Microsoft Copilot High-Stakes Consumer Decisions study.
Only 36 of the financial Top 100 domains also appear in Copilot's overall Top 100. That gap is a strong category effect: a broad Copilot leaderboard misses many mortgage, investing, crypto, retirement and specialist financial sites that become important once the prompt population is restricted to commercial financial decisions.
Copilot also requires an explicit source-capture audit. In this slice, 507 Bing or OpenStreetMap technical and navigational entries were excluded from the public publisher ranking.
Answer Capsule
In a July-September 2026 analysis of 1,664 deduplicated Microsoft Copilot responses across 11 high-stakes investing, retirement, mortgage and financial decision verticals, Forbes was the most frequently cited registrable domain, appearing in 345 responses, or 20.73% of the measured panel. NerdWallet followed at 15.87%, CNBC at 11.18%, The Motley Fool at 10.46%, and Bankrate at 7.81%. The study counted 5,191 public-facing citation events, 4,817 domain-response appearances, and 836 distinct cited registrable domains after excluding 507 Bing/OpenStreetMap technical or navigational entries. The category Top 100 accounted for 68.0% of response-level source appearances and shared only 36 domains with Copilot's broader Top 100.
Key Findings
- Forbes leads the category: 345 responses and 20.73% response citation coverage.
- NerdWallet is the most persistent monthly leader: #2 in July, #1 in August and #1 in September.
- The Top 5 are unusually strong: Forbes, NerdWallet, CNBC, The Motley Fool and Bankrate each appear in at least 7.8% of eligible responses.
- The category market is more concentrated than Copilot overall: the Top 100 account for 68.0% of domain-response appearances here versus 56.7% overall.
- Category specialization is substantial: only 36 domains overlap between the financial Top 100 and Copilot's overall Top 100.
- Specialist lift is large for several sources: StockBrokers.com, Mortgage-Info.com, The College Investor and BrokerChooser each have roughly 3.5x to 4.4x the response coverage they have across Copilot's broader high-stakes panel.
- Vertical leaders differ sharply: U.S. News leads annuities; Forbes leads crypto exchanges, online financial advisors and robo-advisors; CoinBureau leads crypto wallets; JM Bullion leads precious metals; NerdWallet leads mortgage and refinance; StockBrokers.com leads online stock brokers; CNBC leads reverse mortgage; SettlementDecisions.com leads structured settlements.
- The monthly perimeter moves substantially: only 33 domains stayed in the monthly Top 100 in all three months.
- Copilot's financial Top 100 differs substantially from every other published platform child study: overlap ranges from 14.9% Jaccard similarity with Gemini to 25.0% with ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Questions This Study Answers
- Which websites dominate Microsoft Copilot citations for high-stakes investing, retirement, mortgage and financial decisions, and how does that source hierarchy change by vertical?
- How persistent is Copilot's financial source market over time, and how portable is that authority to other AI platforms?
- What should financial publishers, investment brands, mortgage companies and CMOs measure before allocating resources to Copilot-focused content, PR, partnerships or earned media?
Why This Research Belongs in Daily AI Search Marketing Decisions
Article 39 sits at the intersection of two commercially useful views of the same source market:
- the Microsoft Copilot platform view, which asks which sources recur across high-stakes consumer decisions on Copilot; and
- the Investing, Retirement, Mortgage and Financial decision-family view, which asks which sources recur across six AI platform families for one commercial financial category.
For publishers and specialist financial sites, that intersection supports a more precise claim than saying a domain is simply "visible in Copilot." A source can document whether it is cited specifically for high-intent investing, mortgage, retirement, precious-metals, crypto, annuity or structured-settlement decisions, whether that visibility persists over time, and whether its authority is broad across the family or concentrated in one decision journey.
For brands, financial institutions, mortgage companies, investment platforms, CMOs, PR teams and agencies, the operating question is:
Which sources are already present around the exact financial decisions our customers ask Microsoft Copilot to help them make?
Six findings matter for daily planning:
- the Top 100 account for 68.0% of domain-response appearances in this Copilot financial slice;
- the Top 10 account for 32.6% of domain-response appearances;
- only 36 domains overlap between this financial Top 100 and Copilot's broader High-Stakes Top 100, a 22.0% Jaccard similarity;
- 33 domains remained in the monthly financial Top 100 in July, August and September, and the median of the three monthly Top 100 Jaccard comparisons was 28.2%;
- the final child-study Top 100 lists show Copilot sharing 40 domains with ChatGPT, 40 with Perplexity, 34 with Google AI Overviews, 34 with Google AI Mode and 26 with Gemini; and
- 507 Bing, Bing API, Bing network and OpenStreetMap technical or navigation entries were excluded before constructing the publisher leaderboard.
The last point is especially important for Copilot. Microsoft's current documentation says Copilot may fetch information from the Bing search service when web search is enabled. Raw citation captures can therefore contain search, map, image, favicon, API and navigation infrastructure that should not be interpreted as editorial publisher authority. Microsoft Learn: web search in Microsoft Copilot
The parent Investing, Retirement, Mortgage and Financial Citation Authority Study provides the category-level Persistence-Portability Gap interpretation. It reports:
- 66.7% median monthly Top 100 persistence;
- 28.2% frozen median cross-platform Top 100 portability; and
- an approximate 38.5 percentage-point Persistence-Portability Gap.
Article 39 answers a narrower Copilot-specific question. Its 28.2% median monthly Top 100 persistence should not be subtracted from one pairwise cross-platform overlap to create a Copilot-specific gap. The parent PPG uses category-level summary statistics across the broader family.
There is also a versioning caveat. The frozen parent reports 1,654 Microsoft Copilot responses and 39 shared Perplexity-Copilot Top 100 domains, while the later child reconstruction reports 1,664 eligible Copilot responses and the final child lists share 40 domains. Recomputing portability from all six final child-study Top 100 lists produces a median of about 27.4%, rather than the frozen parent's 28.2%. These versions should not be silently merged.
The concentration result also should not be confused with stability. Copilot's financial source market is concentrated, yet its monthly Top 100 has a volatile perimeter. Concentration, persistence and portability are distinct measurements.
Citation visibility should remain separate from brand mentions, recommendation rate, ranking, sentiment, citation-recommendation coupling and downstream outcomes. A source can be frequently cited without causing Copilot to recommend a particular lender, investment platform, financial advisor, broker, exchange or retirement product.
Commercial Action Matrix: What Publishers and CMOs Can Do With the Findings
| Research finding | What financial publishers can responsibly say | What brands and CMOs can reasonably do |
|---|---|---|
| Forbes, NerdWallet, CNBC, The Motley Fool and Bankrate lead this Copilot financial source map | "Our domain can be benchmarked against the sources most frequently cited by Copilot for this defined financial decision set." | Use category leaders as a research tier, then test fit for the exact product and prompt cluster. |
| The Top 100 account for 68.0% of domain-response appearances | "Copilot's measured financial source market is concentrated, but still has a substantial long tail." | Prioritize the recurring source core while preserving vertical specialists. |
| Only 36 domains overlap with broad Copilot's Top 100 | "Category-specific authority can be commercially important without broad platform-wide rank." | Use investing, retirement, mortgage and financial source maps instead of generic Copilot leaderboards. |
| 33 domains remained in the Top 100 across all three months and median monthly Jaccard was 28.2% | "A three-month aggregate should not be described as fixed or permanent." | Refresh source-priority lists on a fixed cadence and track gains, losses and rank movement. |
| Copilot shares 40 financial Top 100 domains with ChatGPT and Perplexity but only 26 with Gemini | "Source portability differs materially by platform pair." | Maintain a shared cross-platform core plus Copilot-specific and engine-specific priorities. |
| The parent category reports a 38.5-point exploratory Persistence-Portability Gap | "The broader financial source portfolio is more stable over time than fully transferable across engines." | Separate the time question from the platform question when allocating content, PR and partnership resources. |
| StockBrokers.com, Mortgage-Info.com, The College Investor and BrokerChooser over-index sharply | "Specialist authority can be understated by broad Copilot rankings." | Preserve high-lift specialists when they dominate the exact commercial decision. |
| NerdWallet ranked #2, #1 and #1 across the three months | "Some source leaders remain durable even while the wider source set rotates." | Separate durable core sources from the changing monthly perimeter. |
| 507 technical/navigation entries were removed | "The ranking is based on filtered public-facing sources rather than raw Bing and navigation infrastructure." | Audit Copilot citation exports before using raw-link counts for publisher investment decisions. |
| Citation visibility does not establish recommendation causality | "Our content is measurably present in the visible source layer." | Measure citations, mentions, recommendations, rank, sentiment and business outcomes separately. |
The daily operating model is therefore four-layered:
- Current Copilot financial core: maintain the sources that matter now, with the collection date attached.
- Vertical and prompt-cluster layer: identify which sources dominate the exact mortgage, refinance, advisor, brokerage, robo-advisor, retirement, precious-metals, crypto or settlement decision.
- Longitudinal check: monitor whether priority sources persist, decline, rotate or change rank.
- Cross-platform check: determine whether the same sources also matter in Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.

The primary ranking metric is Response Citation Coverage: the percentage of eligible Copilot financial responses that cited a domain at least once. A domain counts at most once per response for the primary metric even when multiple pages from the same domain are surfaced.
This section answers
- What denominator and primary metric does this Copilot financial ranking use?
- Which 11 financial verticals are represented, and how were explicit extraction failures handled?
- Why were Bing/OpenStreetMap technical entries removed, and why are response coverage and citation-event counts reported separately?

The long tail matters. A domain can rank modestly across the full financial category and still lead one specific commercial decision vertical.

Citation Concentration
Copilot's financial source market is more concentrated than Copilot's broader high-stakes source distribution.
| Ranking depth | Share of domain-response appearances | Share of citation events | Copilot overall appearance share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top 10 | 32.6% | 31.9% | 30.0% |
| Top 25 | 45.8% | 45.6% | 39.6% |
| Top 50 | 55.8% | 55.6% | 47.8% |
| Top 100 | 68.0% | 67.7% | 56.7% |
The Top 10 account for 32.6% of response-level domain appearances, and the Top 100 account for 68.0%. By comparison, Copilot overall places 30.0% of appearances in the Top 10 and 56.7% in the Top 100.
This means a financial Copilot source strategy can be more focused than a platform-wide source strategy, but the long tail is still too large to justify treating a handful of sites as the entire source market.
Financial Specialization vs. Microsoft Copilot Overall
Only 36 of the Copilot financial Top 100 also appear in Copilot's overall Top 100. The resulting Jaccard similarity is 22.0%.
The table below compares the leading financial sources with their broader Copilot coverage. A lift above 1.0x means a domain appears more often in this financial slice than across the full Copilot High-Stakes Consumer Decisions panel.
| Domain | Financial coverage | Copilot overall coverage | Financial / overall lift | Financial rank | Copilot overall rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| forbes.com | 20.73% | 20.51% | 1.01x | 1 | 1 |
| nerdwallet.com | 15.87% | 15.29% | 1.04x | 2 | 2 |
| cnbc.com | 11.18% | 10.63% | 1.05x | 3 | 4 |
| fool.com | 10.46% | 3.66% | 2.86x | 4 | 8 |
| bankrate.com | 7.81% | 8.55% | 0.91x | 5 | 5 |
| businessinsider.com | 6.31% | 2.75% | 2.29x | 6 | 11 |
| usnews.com | 6.25% | 11.74% | 0.53x | 7 | 3 |
| stockbrokers.com | 6.07% | 1.39% | 4.37x | 8 | 25 |
| mortgage-info.com | 5.41% | 1.42% | 3.81x | 9 | 23 |
| thecollegeinvestor.com | 4.33% | 1.24% | 3.49x | 10 | 30 |
| brokerchooser.com | 4.21% | 0.96% | 4.38x | 11 | 36 |
| yahoo.com | 3.97% | 2.09% | 1.90x | 12 | 13 |
| wealthvieu.com | 3.73% | 2.39% | 1.56x | 13 | 12 |
| money.com | 3.31% | 4.61% | 0.72x | 14 | 6 |
| wsj.com | 3.12% | 3.09% | 1.01x | 15 | 10 |
Several patterns stand out:
- Forbes and NerdWallet are broad Copilot leaders and remain category leaders.
- The Motley Fool rises from 3.66% overall to 10.46% in this financial slice, a 2.86x lift.
- Business Insider rises from 2.75% overall to 6.31%, a 2.29x lift.
- StockBrokers.com, Mortgage-Info.com, The College Investor and BrokerChooser show some of the strongest category lift among the leading domains.
- U.S. News remains very visible but is less concentrated in this financial slice than across Copilot overall.
The strategic point is that broad platform authority and category-specific source importance are related but not interchangeable.

| Structured Settlements | 54 | settlementdecisions.com | 27.8% | catalinastructuredfunding.com | 25.9% | retirementliving.com | 13.0% |
The vertical table changes the strategic interpretation of the category ranking:
- Annuities is led by U.S. News, followed by Forbes and CNBC.
- Crypto Exchanges is led by Forbes, but specialist crypto sites rise quickly behind it.
- Crypto Wallets is led by CoinBureau, not by one of the category-wide Top 5.
- Gold IRAs and Precious Metals Dealers is led by JM Bullion, ConsumerAffairs and Walmart.
- Mortgage and Mortgage Refinance are led by NerdWallet, Forbes and Bankrate.
- Online Financial Advisors and Robo-Advisors are led by Forbes and NerdWallet, with The Motley Fool in the Top 3.
- Online Stock Brokers is led by StockBrokers.com and BrokerChooser ahead of Forbes.
- Reverse Mortgage is led by CNBC, while Bankrate and Reverse.Mortgage tie for second on coverage.
- Structured Settlements is led by SettlementDecisions.com and Catalina Structured Funding.
A category Top 100 is therefore best treated as a source map, not a universal outreach list.

Breadth vs. Specialization
Broad citation visibility and specialist citation visibility are different assets.
Forbes, Business Insider and U.S. News each appear across 10 of the 11 preserved source vertical labels. NerdWallet and Yahoo appear across nine. That breadth can matter to publishers selling cross-category reach and to financial brands with multiple product lines.
Specialists can still be more relevant to a narrow buyer journey. StockBrokers.com ranks #8 category-wide but leads Online Stock Brokers. Mortgage-Info.com ranks #9 but is concentrated in mortgage-related source memberships. SettlementDecisions.com is outside the Top 25 but leads Structured Settlements at 27.8% coverage.
For a CMO, the useful question is not simply, "Which site ranks highest?" It is, "Which recurring sources surround the exact commercial prompts that matter to this product on this platform?"
Monthly Persistence and Citation Drift
Copilot's financial Top 100 had a stable head but a volatile perimeter across the three-month study window.
| Month comparison | Shared Top 100 domains | Jaccard similarity |
|---|---|---|
| 07 vs. 08 | 44 | 28.2% |
| 07 vs. 09 | 52 | 35.1% |
| 08 vs. 09 | 44 | 28.2% |
Only 33 domains appeared in the monthly Top 100 in all three months. The median of the three monthly Top 100 Jaccard comparisons was 28.2%.
The top positions were more stable than the tail:
- Forbes ranked #1 in July, #2 in August and #5 in September.
- NerdWallet ranked #2 in July, #1 in August and #1 in September.
- CNBC ranked #3, #3 and #4.
- The Motley Fool ranked #4, #4 and #2.
- Bankrate ranked #6, #5 and #8.
That persistence supports treating the leading group as a recurring source cluster rather than a one-day snapshot. At the same time, only 33 domains persisted in all three monthly Top 100 lists, so the broader source market still moved substantially.
Aggregate persistence should not be confused with prompt-level stability. A publisher can remain strategically important even while the exact questions and URLs generating citations change.

Platform Differences: Microsoft Copilot's Financial Source Market Is Not Interchangeable With Other AI Engines
The final Investing, Retirement, Mortgage and Financial child-study Top 100 lists show meaningful cross-platform overlap, but no other measured engine uses the same source portfolio.
| Comparison | Shared Top 100 Domains | Jaccard Similarity |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Copilot financial vs. ChatGPT financial | 40 | 25.0% |
| Microsoft Copilot financial vs. Perplexity financial | 40 | 25.0% |
| Microsoft Copilot financial vs. Google AI Overviews financial | 34 | 20.5% |
| Microsoft Copilot financial vs. Google AI Mode financial | 34 | 20.5% |
| Microsoft Copilot financial vs. Gemini financial | 26 | 14.9% |
Copilot is closest to ChatGPT and Perplexity in the final child-study lists, but even those pairs share only 40 of their Top 100 domains. Gemini is the farthest sibling, and the 14.9% Gemini-Copilot Jaccard is the least-similar pair in the financial family.
The frozen Article 07 parent reports 39 shared domains / 24.2% Jaccard for Perplexity-Copilot. The final child lists produce 40 / 25.0% because the later child series uses slightly different deduplicated populations. The parent PPG remains frozen to the parent version.
The ranking order also differs materially. Copilot begins with Forbes, NerdWallet, CNBC, The Motley Fool and Bankrate. Gemini begins with Money.com. Google AI Mode is led by NerdWallet and Investopedia. Perplexity is led by NerdWallet and Investopedia. ChatGPT gives Forbes even greater coverage.
That difference is commercially important. A source strategy optimized for Google AI search, ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity is not automatically a Copilot source strategy.
The operating implication is to maintain three layers: a cross-platform financial core, a Copilot-specific source layer, and a vertical-specific specialist layer.

Prior Research and Why the Rankings Can Look Different
Ahrefs: broad U.S. all-topic Copilot queries
Ahrefs' September 2026 Copilot study tracks more than 3 million U.S. queries across all topics and ranks domains by mention share among the top sources. Amazon ranks #1 at 16.8%, Walmart #2 at 12.6%, Wikipedia #3 at 7.6%, ScienceInsights #4 at 3.5%, and EngineerFix #5 at 3.3%. Ahrefs: The 50 Most-Cited Websites in Copilot
That is very different from Article 39, where Forbes, NerdWallet, CNBC, The Motley Fool and Bankrate lead a high-intent financial panel by response citation coverage.
The difference is not a contradiction. The query population, category mix, metric, denominator and time window differ.
Microsoft: Copilot web grounding can use Bing search
Microsoft's current documentation says Microsoft Copilot and Copilot Chat may fetch information from the Bing search service when web search is enabled. It also documents web-search query citations showing the queries derived from a user's prompt and sent to Bing in supported Copilot Chat experiences. Microsoft Learn: web search in Microsoft Copilot
That architecture makes technical-source auditing especially important. Article 39 excludes 507 Bing, Bing API, Bing network and OpenStreetMap technical or navigation entries before ranking public-facing sources.
Tinuiti: platform and category behavior differ
Tinuiti's Q3 2026 AI Citation Trends Report tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot across commercial categories including apparel, beauty, electronics, food and beverage, home and garden, manufacturing, OTC health, technology, and transportation and logistics. Tinuiti Q3 2026 AI Citation Trends Report
Tinuiti's categories do not match this financial decision family, so its category percentages should not be imported into Article 39. The useful agreement is methodological: citation behavior changes by both platform and commercial category.
Machine Relations: a different question taxonomy produces a different source market
Machine Relations' September 23, 2026 Index release reports 23,280 cited domains, 129,264 citation events and 16,475 observed answer runs across its own six-engine system and 93 published category-question segments. Machine Relations Index Report, September 23, 2026
Its engine set and category/question taxonomy differ from LLMAI, and its six engines do not include Microsoft Copilot. The study therefore is not evidence about Copilot specifically. It is useful as an external example of the broader measurement principle: source leadership changes with the engine set, category, question shape and denominator.
Studies can disagree because of:
- query selection
- commercial intent
- geography
- time window
- ranking metric
- citation-event versus response-level counting
- source-type classification
- technical-asset exclusions
- domain normalization
- platform mode and web-grounding behavior
The relevant question is not which ranking is universally correct. It is which ranking matches the decision environment and measurement contract a publisher or brand actually cares about.

Why This Study Is Different
This study is not differentiated simply because it publishes a Microsoft Copilot source list. Its contribution is the combination of:
- a high-stakes consumer decision query population;
- a narrow financial category spanning 11 preserved source vertical labels;
- a three-month longitudinal observation window;
- Copilot-specific analysis rather than pooled AI citation counts;
- a primary response-level domain coverage metric instead of raw URL frequency alone;
- explicit extraction-failure accounting;
- exact-repeat handling across overlapping source exports;
- registrable-domain normalization using Public Suffix List logic;
- a disclosed Copilot capture audit that removes Bing and OpenStreetMap technical/navigation artifacts from the public publisher ranking;
- monthly source-persistence measurements; and
- direct comparison with parallel financial studies on Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini using the same broader research program.
Why AI Citation Studies Can Disagree
Two well-executed Copilot citation studies can produce different rankings because they may differ in:
- broad informational queries versus commercial buyer-intent queries;
- all topics versus high-stakes financial decisions;
- the Microsoft Copilot product surface or account context being measured;
- geography and language;
- Bing retrieval behavior and model-version changes;
- whether Bing search, map, image, favicon, ad-click and thumbnail wrappers are filtered;
- URL-level versus registrable-domain normalization;
- raw citation-event counts versus one-domain-per-response coverage;
- extraction-failure handling;
- duplicate and shared-prompt treatment;
- collection dates; and
- exact prompt populations.
A citation percentage should therefore always be interpreted with its denominator and collection contract.
What This Means for Financial Publishers
1. Separate broad Copilot authority from financial-category authority
A site can be a broad Copilot source and still under-index in financial decisions, or it can be modest platform-wide and become strategically important inside this category. Publishers should document the exact market where their visibility exists.
2. Sell breadth and specialist depth as different products
Forbes, Business Insider and U.S. News can point to breadth across many financial verticals. StockBrokers.com, CoinBureau, JM Bullion and SettlementDecisions.com can point to specialist concentration. Those are different commercial stories and should be measured separately.
3. Use multi-month persistence as stronger evidence than a snapshot
NerdWallet's #1 position in August and September, Forbes' persistent Top 5 presence, and the stability of CNBC and The Motley Fool are stronger evidence of recurring visibility than a one-day leaderboard.
4. Keep the claim observational
A defensible publisher statement is:
"Our domain is measurably present among the visible sources Microsoft Copilot cited in this defined high-stakes financial decision panel."
The data do not support claiming that Copilot "trusts" a publisher or that buying coverage will cause a recommendation.

What This Means for Brands and CMOs
1. Build a Copilot-specific source map
Do not begin with a general "AI authority" list. Start with the sources that recur around the exact Copilot prompts relevant to the brand's buyer journey.
2. Split the source map by product line
Mortgage, online stock brokers, crypto wallets, annuities and structured settlements have different source leaders. A brand with multiple financial products should maintain separate outreach maps rather than one universal financial publisher list.
3. Prioritize recurring and specialist sources differently
A broad domain with cross-vertical presence can be useful for reputation and broad discoverability. A narrow specialist may be more relevant to one commercial cluster. Budget and outreach should reflect the distinction.
4. Measure citations and recommendations separately
Citation presence tells you which sources are surfaced. It does not by itself tell you which companies are recommended, how often they are recommended, or whether a source caused the recommendation.
5. Re-run the measurement over time
Only 33 domains remained in all three monthly Top 100 lists. Source-market monitoring should therefore be treated as longitudinal research rather than a one-time checklist.
Methodology
Research source
This study uses the frozen July-September 2026 LLM Authority Index High-Stakes Consumer Decisions archive used by the parent citation-authority study and the other platform/category studies in this 66-article research program.
Platform filter
Only observations assigned to the Microsoft Copilot platform family are included. Copilot remains separate from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode.
Category assignment
Observations are included when their preserved source memberships belong to the Investing, Retirement, Mortgage and Financial Decisions family. The 11 source labels are listed in the What We Studied section.
Exact file deduplication
Byte-identical source files were deduplicated by SHA-256 before observation processing.
Analytical anti-double-counting
Within the category-platform slice, observations were treated as exact analytical repeats when they shared the same:
- report month;
- exact raw platform/source surface;
- normalized prompt text; and
- exact set of original citation URLs.
One analytical record was retained while preserving originating vertical memberships. This is an anti-double-counting rule and should not be interpreted as proof that the upstream platform executed a prompt only once.
Prompt normalization
Prompt matching uses Unicode NFKC normalization, case folding, whitespace collapse, and trimming. Prompt wording is otherwise preserved.
Explicit extraction failures
The raw Copilot financial archive contained 173 observations explicitly marked as extraction failures. Those records were excluded from valid-response denominators rather than treated as zero-citation answers.
Domain normalization
Citation URLs were parsed to hostnames, normalized to lowercase, stripped of leading www., and consolidated to registrable domains using Public Suffix List logic.
Copilot capture audit and technical exclusions
The deduplicated financial response set contained 5,698 captured citation entries before public infrastructure filtering. The public publisher ranking excludes 507 obvious technical or navigational entries, consisting of 300 bing.com, 197 bing.net, 8 bingapis.com, and 2 openstreetmap.org entries.
These entries include Bing search/map wrappers, image and thumbnail infrastructure, favicon/API assets and OpenStreetMap navigation utilities. The exclusion is based on the role of the surfaced URL, not simply on Microsoft ownership. Substantive publisher pages remain eligible.
Primary metric
Response Citation Coverage = eligible Copilot financial responses citing domain d at least once / all eligible Copilot financial responses.
The denominator for this article is 1,664 responses. A domain counts no more than once per response for this metric.
Secondary metric
Citation events are retained as a secondary metric. A response can contain multiple citation events from the same domain even though the domain counts once for response coverage.
Monthly ranks
July, August and September Top 100 lists are calculated independently from eligible responses in each month using the same public-source rules.
Vertical views
A deduplicated response can retain more than one originating source membership when overlapping exports contain the same exact observation. Vertical tables are therefore descriptive source views and are not assumed to be statistically independent.
Reconciliation with the parent category article
The earlier cross-platform category article reports 1,654 Microsoft Copilot responses for this family. This child article reconstructs 1,664 eligible responses directly from the frozen record-level corpus using the child-series exact-repeat contract described above.
The difference is 10 responses. The raw records remain preserved, but the older summary and the later child reconstruction were produced at different stages of the cleaning workflow. This article uses the record-level reconstruction rather than forcing the child denominator to match an older aggregate summary.
Jaccard overlap
Top 100 Jaccard similarity is calculated as shared Top 100 domains / unique domains across the two Top 100 lists.
No causal interpretation
A visible citation establishes an observed source relationship. It does not prove that the citation caused Copilot to mention, rank, recommend or convert a consumer for any company.
Want the full Authority Index

Limitations
- This is a fixed prompt panel, not all Copilot usage. Results describe the measured high-stakes financial prompt population.
- The category source labels overlap. A response can retain more than one originating vertical membership after exact-repeat handling.
- The child denominator differs from the older parent summary by 10 responses. The child article uses the frozen record-level reconstruction and documents the discrepancy rather than concealing it.
- Copilot capture contains technical Bing infrastructure. The public ranking removes the obvious technical/navigation entries listed in the methodology, but future product-surface changes could introduce new artifact types.
- Citation presence is not recommendation causality. A cited domain may support background information, a factual statement, a comparison or another part of the answer.
- Platform behavior changes. Copilot retrieval, ranking and presentation can shift after the July-September 2026 window.
- Geography, account state and personalization can matter. The archive does not represent every possible user environment.
- Monthly Top 100 persistence is not prompt-level persistence. A domain can remain in the monthly list while appearing on different prompts or URLs.
- No quality score is implied. Frequency in this panel is not an editorial endorsement of any domain.
