Benchmark Summary

Questions This Section Answers

  • Which brand leads the Student Loan Refinance benchmark, and how large is its lead over the next brand?
  • Which brand recorded the largest coverage increase, and which recorded the largest decline between August and October 2026?

SoFi leads the Student Loan Refinance benchmark in October 2026 with valid recommendation coverage of 71.7%, up from 61.1% in the August 2026 baseline. That gain extended a significant increase already visible between September (59.1%) and October 2026, continuing rather than reversing the baseline-to-current pattern. Earnest follows at 67.8% in October 2026, also up from 60.0% in August 2026 and from 56.3% in September 2026, leaving a gap of 3.9 percentage points between the top two brands.

The largest coverage increase across the series came from SoFi, which rose from 61.1% in August 2026 to 71.7% in October 2026. The largest coverage decline was recorded by PNC Bank, falling from 3.8% in August 2026 to 1.4% in October 2026 — a move beyond normal month-to-month variation that extended a two-month decline streak running from the baseline through October.

The benchmark began with 800 prompt-surface observations in each month and produced 438 qualified observations in October 2026 after qualification.

How to Read the Standings

Presence rate is the share of qualified observations in which the brand appears in any capacity. Valid recommendation coverage is the share of qualified observations in which the brand receives a genuine, non-cautionary recommendation. Top-three rate is the share of qualified observations where the brand appears among the top three recommended options. Rank-one rate is the share where the brand is the first recommendation given, a key indicator of first-choice preference. Net sentiment measures the balance of positive versus negative brand mentions, from 0 (all negative) to 1 (all positive), excluding neutral mentions.

For formulas and denominator rules, see AI Visibility Market Discovery Metric Definitions.

Questions This Section Answers

  • How did top-three and rank-one placement change for the leading student loan refinance brands between August and October 2026?
  • Why can similar coverage levels still produce very different first-choice recommendation rates?

Evidence and Source Layer

Questions This Section Answers

  • What does citation and source presence tell you about the student loan refinance AI recommendation environment?
  • Why is source evidence not the same as proof that a source caused a recommendation?

The benchmark is built from prompt-level observations that retain the query, AI/search surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and, where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources. Source presence is evidence about the information environment. It is not automatically proof that the source caused the recommendation.

Scope Boundaries

This public benchmark does not measure market share, attributable sales, every possible AI response, organic-search ranking, social mention volume, or private and sponsored channels. It records the change in AI recommendation coverage across tracked surfaces. A metric movement alone does not establish causality.
