Research Scope and Qualification
The public benchmark is narrower than the raw collection universe by design. The funnel below shows how observations were qualified.
Research stage | Jul 2026 | Sep 2026 | What it represents |
|---|---|---|---|
Source prompt-surface observations | 800 | 800 | Total prompts collected across surfaces |
Unique questions | 534 | 593 | Distinct questions asked |
Brand / competitor mentions | 800 | 800 | Prompts mentioning a brand or competitor |
Relevant observations | 798 | 799 | On-topic for the category |
Irrelevant observations | 2 | 1 | Off-topic or unusable |
Qualified benchmark observations | 707 | 700 | Public denominator |
Brand-level percentages use the qualified observations as the public denominator, not the raw collection. See AI Market Discovery Methodology for the full qualification process.

- Top-three rate: share of qualified observations where the brand appears among the top three recommended options.
- Rank-one rate: share of qualified observations where the brand is the first recommendation.
- Net sentiment: positive minus negative mentions divided by total mentions, scored from -1 to 1.

Brand | Sep 2026 top-three rate | Sep 2026 rank-one rate | Jul 2026 top-three rate | Jul 2026 rank-one rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Proton VPN | 45.0% | 12.7% | 46.4% | 15.1% |

Evidence and Source Layer
The benchmark is built from prompt-level observations that retain the query, AI/search surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and, where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources. Source presence is evidence about the information environment. It is not automatically proof that the source caused the recommendation.
Scope Boundaries
This public benchmark does not measure:
- Market share or attributable sales
- Every possible AI response across all model versions and configurations
- Organic-search ranking or search engine optimization performance
- Social media mention volume or sentiment outside AI surfaces
- Private or sponsored channels, including gated enterprise deployments
- Causality from a metric movement alone; movements indicate correlation, not cause
