Benchmark Summary

Square remains the coverage leader in the POS Systems benchmark, with valid recommendation coverage of 55.2% in August 2026, down from 73.0% in July 2026. The gap to the next brand, Lightspeed at 50.5% in August 2026, stands at 4.7 percentage points. The largest coverage increase was Epos Now, which rose from 5.7% in July 2026 to 6.1% in August 2026. The largest decline was Square, which fell from 73.0% in July 2026 to 55.2% in August 2026.

This was a month of significant movement, with eight of the ten tracked brands posting declines beyond normal month-to-month variation. Beyond Square, other notable decliners included Clover (Fiserv, Inc.) falling from 60.8% in July 2026 to 45.1% in August 2026, Toast dropping from 64.6% to 48.4%, and Lightspeed declining from 65.6% to 50.5%. The category-wide pullback in recommendation coverage was accompanied by lower presence rates across most brands. The benchmark records this pattern; it does not establish why presence and recommendation coverage moved together this month.

The benchmark began with 800 prompt-surface observations in each month and produced 630 qualified observations in July 2026 and 641 in August 2026 after qualification.

Evidence and Source Layer

The benchmark is built from prompt-level observations that retain the query, AI/search surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and, where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources. Source presence is evidence about the information environment. It is not automatically proof that the source caused the recommendation.

Scope Boundaries

This public benchmark does not measure:

  • Market share or sales attributable to AI recommendations.
  • Every possible AI response across all model versions and personalizations.
  • Organic-search ranking positions outside AI-generated answers.
  • Social media mention volume or sentiment.
  • Private or sponsored channels such as paid placements.
  • Causality from a metric movement alone; the benchmark records change, not why it occurred.

About This Benchmark

The LLM Authority Index AI Market Discovery Index tracks how often and how prominently brands are recommended by major AI and search surfaces across a vertical. Each month, a consistent set of prompt-surface observations is collected across six canonical AI families, then qualified into a public benchmark that measures presence, recommendation coverage, placement, and sentiment for each tracked brand.
