Benchmark Summary

WooCommerce leads the eCommerce Websites benchmark for August 2026 with a valid recommendation coverage of 75.1%, up from 73.8% in July 2026. Shopify POS follows closely at 73.3% in August 2026, down from 73.5% in July 2026, a gap of 1.8 percentage points between the two leaders.

The largest coverage increase among tracked brands was Square, which rose to 42.5% in August 2026 from 40.5% in July 2026. The largest coverage decline was BigCommerce, which fell to 63.8% in August 2026 from 66.2% in July 2026.

This was a quiet month for the benchmark. No brand moved beyond normal month-to-month variation in valid recommendation coverage between July 2026 and August 2026. All ten tracked brands were classified as stable, with movement concentrated within expected ranges. Over the full baseline-to-current series, WooCommerce and Wix both showed modest upward movement, while BigCommerce and Adobe Commerce (Magento) recorded the largest declines, each down less than three percentage points.

The benchmark began with 800 prompt-surface observations in each month and produced 607 qualified observations in August 2026 after qualification.

Changed

Qualified surface breadth counts the canonical AI/search surface families with at least one qualified observation: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. The benchmark held breadth at six families in both months, though the leader by valid recommendation coverage shifted from Shopify POS in July 2026 to WooCommerce in August 2026.

Research Scope and Qualification

The public benchmark is narrower than the raw collection universe by design. Brand-level percentages use the qualified observations as the public denominator, not the raw collection.

How to Read the Standings

  • Presence rate: share of qualified observations where the brand is mentioned by the AI response.
  • Valid recommendation coverage: share of qualified observations where the brand appears in a valid recommendation shortlist.
  • Top-three rate: share of observations where the brand appears among the top three recommended options.
  • Rank-one rate: share of observations where the brand is the top-ranked recommendation.
  • Net sentiment: positive minus negative mention share across observations where the brand appears.

For formulas and denominator rules, see AI Market Discovery Metric Definitions.

All ten brands were classified as stable in August 2026. No brand qualified as a significant riser or significant decliner on valid recommendation coverage, the benchmark's primary metric. The largest month-over-month moves on that metric were BigCommerce down 2.4 points and Square up 2.0 points, both within normal variation. WooCommerce's top-three rate moved from 40.4% in July 2026 to 46.1% in August 2026, while its overall valid recommendation coverage remained within the stable range for the month.

Category Leader: WooCommerce

WooCommerce is the current category leader with a valid recommendation coverage of 75.1% in August 2026, up from 73.8% in July 2026. The brand also holds the highest presence rate at 97.0% in August 2026, up from 96.9% in July 2026. Shopify POS remains within 1.8 percentage points, with the lead having changed hands from July 2026 when Shopify POS led at 73.5%.

Recommendation Placement Snapshot

Where a brand appears in the recommendation order matters for buyer attention. WooCommerce leads on coverage but trails on rank-one placement, while Shopify POS dominates first-position recommendations.

Comparable top-three coverage can still hide very different first-position rates: WooCommerce is recommended in the top three 46.1% of the time but ranks first only 3.5% of the time, while Shopify POS ranks first in 68.4% of observations, a gap that coverage alone does not reveal.

Buyer-Intent Distribution

All qualified observations in both months fell into the Brand Recommendation class, meaning the public series captures discovery and consideration questions where buyers seek brand recommendations.

Evidence and Source Layer

The benchmark is built from prompt-level observations that retain the query, AI/search surface, answer, brand outcome, recommendation placement, sentiment, and, where exposed, citations or attributable evidence sources. Source presence is evidence about the information environment. It is not automatically proof that the source caused the recommendation.

Scope Boundaries

This public benchmark does not measure market share, attributable sales, every possible AI response, organic-search ranking, social mention volume, private or sponsored channels, or causality from a metric movement alone. It records what AI surfaces recommend across the tracked surfaces and prompt set, and it treats each metric as a distinct signal rather than a proxy for another.

About This Benchmark

The LLM Authority Index AI Market Discovery Index tracks how AI-driven discovery surfaces present brands across categories. Each month, the benchmark collects prompt-level observations from six canonical AI/search surface families and measures presence, recommendation coverage, placement, and sentiment for each tracked brand.
