Financial Services: AI Market Discovery Index
August 2026 mortgage lending benchmark across six AI platforms shows Rocket Mortgage still led recommendations, but its coverage declined.

On this page
This benchmark analyzes how six mortgage lenders appear in AI-generated answers, covering 427 AI responses in August 2026 across ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity. The primary metric is valid recommendation coverage, which measures how often each brand appeared in an AI recommendation shortlist of three or more options, calculated as a share of all AI responses in the period. The August 2026 results are compared against the July 2026 baseline of 471 observations across the same six platforms and the same six lenders.
Executive Summary
Rocket Mortgage recorded the only significant movement in August 2026. Its valid recommendation coverage declined to 68.4% in August 2026, down from 75.4% in July 2026, a move beyond normal month-to-month variation. Despite this decline, Rocket Mortgage remains the category leader with the highest valid recommendation coverage in the index. Its modeled AI Authority Value was 150,978.0 in July 2026.
Pennymac showed the largest upward movement among the stable brands, with valid recommendation coverage rising to 30.4% in August 2026 from 25.5% in July 2026, though this move falls within normal variation. Five of the six tracked brands were classified as stable in August 2026. The decline for Rocket Mortgage extends a one-month downward streak, while no brand has yet established a multi-month trend in either direction, given that the series currently spans only two measured months.

Directional Category Movement
Rocket Mortgage
Rocket Mortgage recorded valid recommendation coverage of 68.4% in August 2026, down from 75.4% in July 2026. This decline of 7.0 percentage points moved beyond normal month-to-month variation. The brand's raw mention presence rate fell to 95.3% in August 2026 from 98.1% in July 2026, and its recommended rank-one rate was 31.4% in August 2026, down from 34.8% in July 2026. Despite these declines, Rocket Mortgage retained the top recommendation rank in more than three out of ten AI responses and continues to lead the index by a substantial margin. Its modeled AI Authority Value was $241,886.9 in August 2026.
Rocket Mortgage's lead narrowed in August 2026, but it remains the dominant brand in AI recommendations by a wide margin. The benchmark data does not establish why coverage declined this month.
Stable Brands
Five brands were classified as stable in August 2026. Pennymac showed the strongest upward movement among them, with valid recommendation coverage rising to 30.4% in August 2026 from 25.5% in July 2026, though this move fell within normal variation. Freedom Mortgage rose to 11.2% in August 2026 from 9.8% in July 2026, and its raw mention presence rate increased to 22.9% from 17.6%, a move beyond normal variation even as its primary metric stayed stable. Veterans United Home Loans was essentially flat at 47.3% in August 2026, down from 48.4% in July 2026. loanDepot and New American Funding both declined within normal variation, with loanDepot at 30.0% in August 2026, down from 31.2% in July 2026, and New American Funding at 16.2% in August 2026, down from 21.0% in July 2026. New American Funding's recommended top-three rate fell to 4.5% in August 2026 from 7.6% in July 2026, a move beyond normal variation even though its primary metric did not cross the significance threshold.

What This Means for the Category
The Financial Services AI category is characterized by a persistent leadership gap that, while narrowing in August 2026, remains substantial. Rocket Mortgage's decline from 75.4% to 68.4% is the most notable single move in the two-month series, yet it leaves the brand roughly twice as visible in AI recommendations as the next closest brand, Veterans United Home Loans at 47.3%. The narrowing of the gap between Rocket Mortgage and the rest of the field is a function of the leader's decline more than of gains among the challengers.
For the five stable brands, August 2026 offered a mixed but generally subdued picture. Pennymac's rise toward the 30% mark and Freedom Mortgage's gains in raw presence suggest incremental change, while New American Funding and loanDepot drifted slightly lower. None of these movements has yet established a trend, and additional months of data will be needed to determine whether any of the stable brands are beginning to move in a consistent direction.

Company Analysis
The modeled AI opportunity value across the category reached 824,992.5 in July 2026, reflecting a change in the overall opportunity pool as well as shifts in individual brand performance. Rocket Mortgage captured the largest share of this opportunity at 25.61% in August 2026, up from 18.3% in July 2026. Veterans United Home Loans captured 6.24% in August 2026, up from 4.7% in July 2026, and Pennymac captured 5.51% in August 2026, up from 3.78% in July 2026.
These captured-share figures correspond to modeled AI Authority Values that, for several brands, moved in a different direction than valid recommendation coverage. Rocket Mortgage's authority value rose to 150,978.0 in July 2026, and Veterans United Home Loans rose to 38,790.6, even as both brands saw their recommendation coverage hold steady or decline. The benchmark cannot establish why modeled value and recommendation coverage diverged for these brands this month; the pattern is consistent with a change in the composition of the modeled opportunity pool rather than a change in underlying recommendation performance.
The modeled AI Authority Value layer also depends on query-volume inputs that shifted between periods. Median monthly query volume across tracked prompts rose to 20 in August 2026 from 10 in July 2026, and the share of zero-volume prompts fell to 25.3% from 38.6%. Because these inputs changed, modeled AI Authority Value should be read as a provisional, modeled construct that reflects the current opportunity pool's composition rather than a precise measure of commercial performance.
The table below shows current-period standing across the primary visibility and recommendation signals, plus modeled AI Authority Value, for all six tracked brands.
Brand | Presence rate | Valid recommendation coverage | Top-three rate | Rank-one rate | Modeled AI Authority Value |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Rocket Mortgage | 95.3% | 68.4% | 50.1% | 31.4% | $241,886.9 |
Veterans United Home Loans | 53.4% | 47.3% | 28.3% | 17.1% | $58,971.1 |
Pennymac | 43.3% | 30.4% | 13.6% | 4.7% | $51,993.5 |
loanDepot | 38.9% | 30.0% | 9.4% | 2.1% | $20,813.5 |
New American Funding | 17.6% | 16.2% | 4.5% | 0.5% | $2,239.0 |
Freedom Mortgage | 22.9% | 11.2% | 4.9% | 0.7% | $2,111.8 |
Freedom Mortgage and loanDepot, by contrast, saw modeled AI Authority Value fall in August 2026 even as their valid recommendation coverage remained close to July 2026 levels, underscoring that captured value in a given month depends heavily on which query contexts a brand's recommendations fell into, not simply how often the brand was recommended.

What This Public Benchmark Does Not Include
This benchmark measures AI recommendation coverage and modeled authority value across six mortgage lenders. It does not include the following:
- Actual revenue, closed loans, or real transaction volumes for any brand
- The specific reasons why any AI system recommended or omitted a particular brand
- Performance on individual platforms, which can vary meaningfully within the aggregate figures
- Anomaly-level detail on which prompts or question types drive recommendation patterns
- Competitor-specific analysis of positioning, messaging, or content strategy
- Qualitative review of what AI systems say about each brand in narrative answers
- Month-by-month visibility of brands that fall below the tracked six
- Attribution of modeled authority value to any specific content, campaign, or channel
- Forward-looking projections of future recommendation coverage or authority
Methodology and Disclaimers
- The primary metric is valid recommendation coverage, defined as the share of all AI responses in which a brand appeared in a recommendation shortlist of at least three options.
- Data was collected from six platforms: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity, across 427 observations in August 2026 and 471 observations in July 2026.
- The modeled AI Authority Value is a modeled benchmark, not reported revenue. It represents the estimated value of appearing in AI recommendations and should not be interpreted as financial statements or actual business results.
- Captured share of AI opportunity represents the share of the total modeled opportunity pool that a brand captured in a given month. It is a modeled construct, not an audited market share figure.
- Net sentiment score reflects the balance of positive and neutral mentions across AI responses. It does not measure customer satisfaction, brand health, or actual user experience.
- Recommendation-shaped answers are AI responses structured as a shortlist or explicit recommendation, as opposed to purely informational answers. The share of responses taking this form can vary month to month; it was 61.6% in July 2026 and 57.6% in August 2026.
- Platform coverage varies by month, and changes in the mix of platforms or query types may affect comparability between periods.
- The index tracks six brands: Freedom Mortgage, New American Funding, Pennymac, Rocket Mortgage, Veterans United Home Loans, and loanDepot. Brands outside this set are not measured.
- Raw mention presence, valid recommendation coverage, recommendation top-three rate, and recommendation rank-one rate are distinct signals. A change in one does not necessarily imply a change in another.
- The time series in this report covers July 2026 and August 2026. With two data points, findings describe movement between these months rather than long-term trends.
- Month-to-month variation is normal. Small changes in recommendation coverage, sentiment, or modeled value are expected and should not be interpreted as meaningful shifts. Only movements beyond normal variation, as identified in the underlying analysis, are described as significant in this report.
Commercial Takeaway
Rocket Mortgage remains the brand to benchmark against in Financial Services AI recommendations, but its August 2026 decline in valid recommendation coverage — from 75.4% to 68.4% — signals that recommendation-stage visibility, not raw mention volume, is the metric worth monitoring closely. Brands seeking to close the gap should treat presence in AI-generated shortlists, rather than simple mentions, as the leading indicator of AI-driven discovery.
The modeled AI Authority Value figures in this report are a modeled benchmark construct, not revenue or reported financial results. Rocket Mortgage's modeled value rose to $241,886.9 in August 2026 even as its recommendation coverage declined, a divergence that reflects the composition of the modeled opportunity pool rather than a change in underlying recommendation performance. Brands should treat modeled value as directional context for where AI-driven query volume is concentrated, not as a measure of actual commercial results.
